I'm considering buying an '07 Impala SS, but have a question about the 5.3 V8's active fuel management (aka DOD). Has anyone ever had a problem with this system? If it were to somehow get stuck in 4 cylinder mode, would the car still be driveable, or would I be stranded? Thanks.

After all the hype and anticipation the last 10 years or so have brought upon the automotive world, the new Camaro has finally been delivered to dealerships across the country. I remember seeing the early renderings and thought for sure that this was going to be the best car of the 21st century under $40K. When I saw the movie Transformers in the theater, and Bumblebee morphed into the new Camaro, I was blown away. I just knew it was the car to have. I was so excited to see them I couldn't stand it. But when I started seeing pictures of the actual interior, I was less than excited. The overgrown gauges in the center console near the shifter were the first things that ca…

I was thinking about the "hood scoop" on the Camaro yesterday, and whether it was really functional or not. Anyways, regardless of whether it is functional, it's not needed with the LS2. The LS2 is a "bottom breather" meaning it takes in air from underneath. The reason the Z06 has a little hood scoop is because the LS7 is not a bottom breather but rather a "front breather" meaning it takes in air from the front/top of the engine. So, knowing that, even if the scoop is funtional, it probably does very little for cooling the LS2, so... maybe that hints at the LS7 or another front breathing engine being possible in the future for the Camaro.

Although we were unable to sit in them, we were given an upclose look at the exterior of the models and let me tell you, they are even more amazing in real life. The Avalanche still has its unmistakable styling but has been softened on the sides and made more agressive on the front end. Some of the features we are too expect is a power operated hard cover and rolling cargo area, like that introduced this year on the 2006 Cadillac EXT. Dare I say that the side view of the Avalanche reminded me of the Ridgeline but much more Avalanche …

I've never heard of this before, but here's an excerpt from the Chevy Malibu article on Wikipedia... In 1981, General Motors of Canada in Oshawa produced a special order of 12,000 4-door Malibu sedans for Saddam Hussein's Iraqi government. The deal was worth 100-million dollars to GM. These special order Malibus carried the unusual combination of GM's lowest-power V6, the 110hp 229ci (3.8 l) engine mated to a unique 3-on-the-floor stick shifter. All of the cars were equipped with air conditioning, heavy duty cooling systems, tough upholstery and 14-inch (360 mm) stamped steel wheels with trim rings and "baby moon" center caps. They were the ultimate Iraqi Taxis. In 1982…

With AFM enabled in Eco mode, the Corvette Stingray posts 17 (city) / 30 (hwy) mpg in the EPA test cycle. With it disabled in Touring mode, the Stingray posts 17 (city) / 28 (hwy) mpg in EPA test cycles. GM chooses to put the “average of the two” 17/29 mpg on the window sticker. 19. Is Blue Devil Alive? Chevy Performance Might Be Heating Up By WES RAYNAL AutoWeek | Published 02/08/06, 12:20 pm et Chevy officials at the Chicago auto show aren't comfirming that a higher-performance version of the Corvette Z06, called Blue Devil, is under development. But they certainly are not downplaying the possibilities. "We'd love to have it," said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. Sources say the Blue Devil might go with a supercharged version of the Z06's 7.0-liter V8, producing upward of 600 hp. Look for lightweight carbon fiber body parts to reduce weight to about 2900 pounds. Pricing will likely start somewhere around $100,000 if and when the ca…

A few publications released their experiences exceeding that, with some going as high as 250 miles on a single charge. With most of the affordable EV's having ranges between 90 - 120 miles, a lot of fuss has been made over electric vehicle range anxiety. So far, Telsa is the only manufacturer to offer vehicles with ranges over 200 miles, that are also supplemented by a network of free fast charging stations only for Tesla owners. While the Bolt doesn't have a manufacturer supplied charging network, there is a vast network of free and pay chargers out there. Plugged into a Le…

  31. Chevrolet's new Camaro is the last of the neo-ponycars to hit showrooms, and now it's finally possible for you to put your money where your mouth is after all those breathless "I'd buy one..." comments. Dreamers and real buyers alike can head to the new Camaro Configurator website and trick one out just right. The price of entry for a base-trim LS model is a mere $22,995, and it still looks fantastic – there's something about those black steelies with trim rings. A V6 that belts out more power than some of the storied V8s of yore while netting 29 highway miles per gallon is a persuasive argument for going base, though we couldn't help ourselves and wound up with a…

It all gets somewhat drowned out by about 4000~5000 rpm as the rest of the engine noises catches up. To a certain degree, cruising noise on the freeway isn’t bad because the wind noise, tire noise and everything else help mask the utterly uninspiring engine note. I have driven the car many times with him so have made the following pro and con table: Pros: Spacious, quiet at cruise, lots of std features for cost, trunk space, performance, mileage, handling, workmanship, reliabilty Cons: Anonymous rear end styling, engine noise at more than half throttle, hard seats take getting used to, no floor shift indicators or glove box light a minor annoyance Now that the 06 Impala is fully broken in with 35,000 miles, performance and mileage have improved to quite respectful level…

Would it be possible to keep the solid rear axle and have fold-flat 3rd row seats? Envision a cargo/storage well AFTER the solid rear axle (in between the axle assembly and the rear bumper. Pretty much where the gas tank/spare wheel sits. You'd need to move the gas tanks forward (between the frame rails, towards the middle of the vehicle). This is doable. You'd need a longer filler tube, but wtf. A side benefit would be that the weight of the gasoline would be centrally located in the vehicle; helping stability (which shouldn't be a concern on a vehicle weighing 5500lbs to start with, but again, wtf). The exhaust pipe would also need special routing (off to the si…

GM Lordstown future vague as strike looms Saturday, September 15, 2007 3:37 AM | By M.R. Kropko | Link to Original Article @ Columbus Dispatch CLEVELAND -- General Motors Lordstown workers faced a possible strike yesterday, just as they have been trying to urge the company to commit to producing a new car model that would keep the northeastern Ohio plant operating past 2009. The workers were among those at plants across the country preparing to strike as a midnight deadline loomed in contract negotiations between General Motors Corp. and the United Auto Workers. Over the weekend, I was in the vicinity of Chico CA. I checked out a few car dealerships and there were some 2007s around. On this basic Impala, the sticker said it was a 3.5 VVT V6. The mileage (for gas) read: 20 city / 29 highway Last year's (2006) model sticker for this engine indicated: 21 city / 31 highway That is screwed. The bigger V6 in GP/LaX comes in at 20/30. I'm scratching my head on this one. What's the deal?

It's no secret that the Corvette's demographic is somewhere in the 50s, and the younger crowd does have a few negative connotations associated with it, namely that it's the default purchase of balding men going through a mid-life crisis and having a need to compensate for "other" shortcomings. How do we fix that? How should Chevy lower the buying age of the Corvette? How do we get in their 20s and 30s to sell their souls on a loan for a Corvette as opposed to, say, an M3 or G37? Should Chevy even bother?

[source: Motor Authority] GM engineer drops Corvette ZR1 supercharged LS9 into '69 Chevrolet Camaro For many auto enthusiasts, the golden age of automotive styling was during 1960s, when designers had virtual free reign on their designs and didn't have to worry about aerodynamics, pedestrian crumple zones and other such ‘nuisances’. At the same time, the ‘60s could hardly be called the high point of automotive technology, and the development of engines, brakes, suspension components and transmissions still had a long way to go. Fast forward to 2009, and legendary GM engineer and pro-touring car builder Mark Stielow appears to have created the perfect marriage…

  85. Think Australia’s the king of the performance ute? Think again. South African tuning house LupiniPower is currently putting its Holden SS Ute-based Lupini Chevrolet SuperUte through an accelerated development and testing program, and word is it’s passing with flying colours. The standard Holden SS Ute gets 270kW and 530Nm out of its 6.0-litre V8 engine. For the SuperUte, Lupini has added a supercharger to make it more like the engine found in the Corvette ZR1. The result is a staggering 400kW of power and an almighty 785Nm (578lb/ft) of torque. That’s an extra 130kW/255Nm – or slightly more than adding the engine from a Volkswagen Golf 118TSI to the Holden. Accelera…

I have never experienced an automotive company, including my three years at BMW, that has so much passion for excellence and dedication to the product. It’s contagious. Oz is a nation where the “car-guys” (both genders) rule, at least at Holden. I just love the palpable air of the "we want to win" spir…

As the race to bring a mass-market, rechargeable electric vehicle to market heats up, Bob Lutz, GM's head of global product development, said the largest U.S. automaker remained on track to launch the Chevy Volt in November 2010. Despite the fact that GM Chairman Rick Wagoner originally said the 2010 Camaro would be "virtually identical" to designer Sangyup Lee's concept that debuted at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show, Lutz confirmed that the production Camaro will in fact have a B-pillar, making it a standard coupe instead of a traditional hardtop coupe. Lutz said the standard coupe structure is necessary to keep production costs down and…

Back in August I challenged you to test-drive some of our newest products and see for yourselves if they deserve the lavish praise I’ve been giving them. I spoke specifically of the Chevy HHR and Impala, Pontiac Torrent, Hummer H3, Pontiac G6 Coupe and the Solstice. It appears that at least some of you have taken me up on that, because those vehicles are getting attention in dealerships. The HHR in particular has been making a lot of headway in the marketplace. Chevy dealers are telling us they can’t get enough of them; they are selling them at about three times the rate they’d ordered them. About half of those sales have been conquest sales – from customers who pr…

After Deep Cuts, GM Expects To See Profits on Small Cars By NEAL E. BOUDETTE = September 14, 2006 Link to Original Article @ Wall Street Journal.com DANA POINT, Calif. -- The deep structural cost cuts General Motors Corp. put in place this year should enable the auto maker to finally make money on small cars, the company's vice chairman said. For years, most if not all compact cars made by GM and its Detroit rivals Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group have lost money, in large part because of the extra costs they carry to pay for health care and pensions for thousands of retired hourly workers. But GM last year reached an agreement with the Unite…

I e-mailed Mr. Lutz a few hours ago to covey our support and enthusiasm for his dedication to the Chevrolet Volt and to also ask him about mules and prototypes, specifically when will we see first evidence of the E-Flex system outside the lab and on the road (and when folks can drive them). Part of the response is as follows: "The early testing before production can legally only be done by GM people. What we will drive next spring will be crude mule vehicles consisting of cut-up last generation Malibus containing experimental battery packs. Nothing can be driven by the public before the end of 2010."
