I remember hearing when the Atlas engine came out that 7 and 8 cylinder variants were possible. What happened here? also, have their been 7 cylinder non-radial engines before this?

On my way into Brookville each day, I pass this ever multiplying group of "Old Navy" Chevy pick-ups. It started with one. On to two. Then three... and four, five, six, seven, eight... There are now over a dozen of these things sitting there. More and more keep popping up. I have no idea why or how, either.

So I guess we all saw the TorreX 330 or the RXent GXP right? Here we try some more: Let's start it off with an Impala and an Infiniti in a blender: How about a Prius and C30? http://www.pcauto.com.cn/zt/07sh/car/fenle...704/438332.html Or how about a mangled Mazda6 reshaped to a Mazda 3 size? http://www.pcauto.com.cn/nation/newcar/hmh1/index.html Or maybe a Brera?

Any 2007 or 2008 GMC Sierra/Chevy Silverado owners that would like to post here (or send me a PM) about what kind of average MPG you've been getting? It would be helpful to my inquiring mind - I'm curious as to what "real world" MPG numbers look like. It probably would be good to know whether you have a reg/ext/crew cab, 2wd or 4wd, and what size engine you've got under the hood. Thanks in advance!

Lord knows I don't remember each and every one of your screennames, so to all that have joined recently... Welcome to Cheers and Gears! Hope you enjoy the little corner of the web we've assembled here and found our group friendly - if not a bit eccentric - and worth bookmarking and revisiting many, many times. Be sure to check out every section of the board to see all we have to offer. I feel pretty confident that we have a little something for everyone. And even though our focus is on the future, we love GM cars of all ages (and maybe some other other makes, too) so feel free to post about whatever you'd like. And if by chance you don't find something you were h…

I have an interesting one-afternoon mini-project that I want to tackle. I have the GM Accessories premium floor mats for my Cobalt, and while they're great at catching dirt, very durable, and embarrasingly easy to clean, I have one problem with them: The tan accents on them are rather ugly and don't go well with my car's inside at all. My solution: mask off the accents and brush on some type of silver paint to cover the tan up. Does anyone know of a type of brush-on paint that will will flex with the mat so that it won't crack easily and last for a long time? Something that soaks into the mat would be ideal, because I have no reason to want to see the tan again. TIA

Cory, You might remember about 6 months or so ago I sent your sketches to Ed Welburn, well I never heard anything back. Now that I am a GM god :AH-HA_wink:, Ed himself reads and answers my e-mails when I send them now. I discussed your sketches with him in an E-Mail a week or so ago, please see Ed's response below. give me 5 - 10 sketches and send them to my yahoo email at [email protected], I have limited web and email access where I am now, so that's a better email address for me. I will send them directly to Ed Welburn himself, also supply me with your e-mail address too, so I can forward it to Ed so he can give you his thoughts on them directly. Please note, …

Remember Wacky Packages? And beer can collecting? Well, my brother and I had a huge collection of both. For the most part, the collections still exist (my dad pitched a fit at one point and tossed some of the cans). Now, it looks like there is some value to them so I may be putting them all on ebay. It will be a ton of work, but should be interesting.

I got a $50 iTunes gift certificate for Christmas, and I downloaded a song the other night. Trouble is, my Pocket PC doesn't support the iTunes protected M4P format (naturally). Nor will the 20GB Creative Zen Touch that I'm about to buy from my sister for half price. Does anyone know of any good, preferrably free M4P to MP3 converters that'll cause me little to no grief in getting the iTunes songs onto my player(s)? I've been Googling this for a couple of days, and it doesnt seem to be an exact science. I know I can burn a CD in itunes and re-rip ino MP3/WMA format, but I'll only do that as a last resort. I also refuse to overpay for an iPod. TIA…

PA wants to follow in California's foot steps and require stricter laws on emissions. I say nay. It's not like we have a crap load of cars here most of this state is populated by people on buggies. WTF? "The cost of the vehicle might go up, but it will be benefical at the gas pump." BullSh*t! "We would have to make the cars smaller, with less horsepower. The more expensive cars would be that much harder to sell." Exactly I understand highly populated states should work on this, but we aint one of them. The most of the polution would be from the major cities or someone from Jersey. And as far as cost. I find it interested that there are no mentions as to what ex…

This is very important indeed. My friend (who has a Toyota Corolla I've mentioned before), his sister got a job I guess and she needs a car now. His family has always bought Japanese cars (they're Asian). Well I've talked with him before about some of the hot new American cars (he wants a Saturn Sky someday), and he was very impressed with my Intrepid, so both him and his sister want to give American cars a chance. The problem is that their dad is very bias and refuses to allow anything besides Japanese cars into the family. I find it screwy because it's her money that she's using to buy a car, but whatever. So here's the challenge: I need to come up with a list of…

Alright... want to do me a favor? I want you to listen to this one song and give me your opinion on it. It's "I won't see you tonight, Part 1" by Avenged Sevenfold. Do it however you can. Here's a link to MSN Music if you want to do it that way: MSN: A7X: Song #9 It might cost money. Anyways, this is because I absolutely love this song. It's the best rock song I've heard since Guns N Roses' time. It also happens that all of A7X's music is some the best rock I've heard since their time with beautifully written music. The only downfall may be the lyrics. They're not for everybody. If you can't tell by the name of the band, they're somewhat Punk/Goth... especially on "Waki…

With my habit of doing project cars, I am feeling the need to do my own body and paint work. The stumbling block for my projects always seems to be dealing with the bodyshop - either they don't get to it, don't get it, or cost way too much. I'm thinking that the answer may be to do it myself, so I'm looking for any and all input on the subject. I have a huge commercial compressor, but I need to convert it from 3-phase electric to 220 in order to run it here. There may be another alternative compressor in the mix as well (brand new and never used). Years ago, my Dad bought a Binks #7 paint gun but I'm not sure where that is now. I want the paint on my cars to be …

Out with February, out with winter, out with the Challenger. I will not be seeking an immediate replacement. The used car market in my area is a non-stop barrage of overpriced and high-mileage junk. Yesterday's retail prices have become today's wholesale values. Four-grand will only buy you an unlovable, worn out sedan or SUV with near or at 200,000 miles, a mange-riddled paint job, an arthritic suspension, and a catatonic engine. If you're really lucky, four-grand more will buy you a cramped compact sedan with 70,000 miles that's been built out of pure tapioca and subjected to a previous life of hardcore prostitution. Kicking this off as I saw a brand new Cadillac Escalade sport edition all Matte Black. I suspect a custom paint job as I do not see Matte paint on the option list of the web site. New purchase from my local Cadillac dealership I go too. Plenty of blah appliance auto's today, but one consistent observation, so much body damage on 1 and 2 year old auto's from corners of the bumpers crushed in to side swipes. Very weird especially as I saw a number of subcompacts from Honda Fit to Mini with this kind of damage today as I ran to Costco.

Must be the Pee they use to clean up the toxic exhaust. Went in and got what I needed and on the way back to my auto, a brand new Ram Eco-Diesel. WOW, quiet, but talk about SMELLY! Well, it's the 1st of August. Seen anything you care to share, describe, and/or have photographed? Have at it. Today, I was driving down a major street with two traffic lanes in each direction that had residential homes on each side of it. I was in the right hand lane. Following me along in traffic in the left hand lane was a silver 2002-2003ish Olds Alero coupe. It sounded pretty good as it accelerated in the stop and go traffic. At a certain point, the traffic was stopped in front of a house with a silver 2002-2003ish Olds Alero sedan. At this point, these two silver Olds Aleros were perpendicular to each other. It was funny to me because just last night…

http://www.philly.com/philly/news/br...All=y#comments It's not often that Philadelphia police are called to jump-start a stolen auto case. Especially one four decades old. But thanks to their efforts, a Texas man has recovered a treasured convertible stolen in Philadelphia nearly 42 years ago. Bob Russell never gave up hope that his stolen 1967 Austin Healey would be found one day. Russell was a graduate student at Temple University in 1970 when he parked the English roadster at an apartment complex after a date with his future wife. When he went out to the lot the next morning, the Austin was gone. Because he was a cash-strapped student, it was a double whammy. He…

WASHINGTON - Linguists alarmed at the increasing extinction of many indigenous languages identified five global "hot spots" on Tuesday where the problem is worst, led by northern Australia and a region of South America. The linguists are part of the Enduring Voices project that seeks to document and revitalize languages slipping toward oblivion, often spoken by indigenous peoples like Australia's aborigines whose cultures were trampled by settlers. David Harrison of Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, the project's co-director, said there are 6,992 recognized distinct languages worldwide. He said on average one language vanishes every two weeks, often as its last elderl…

I'm thinking about attending a solo autocross some weekend with the LS. Apparently Des Moines SCCA does them on a regular basis. I think it'd be fun as heck to do, but I don't know where to start and since I have no experience on a track, don't know if I'm going to make myself look like a fool. How welcoming are these events to novices? Am I going to be the only one with a stock sedan while everyone else has a tricked out sports car? How hard are these events on your vehicle?

Link: http://www.autoextremist.com/page2.shtml#Rant Detroit. Every once in a while, a story comes along that gets us shaking our heads in bemused disbelief. But this week's story may just take the cake. Rick Kranz and Peter Brown reported in Automotive News that J Mays and Jim Padilla have decided that internal design constraints have cost Ford dearly in terms of design "reach" - and that they're going to free up the design process so that Ford's mainstream designs won't suffer from the calculated blandness that they've displayed all too frequently of late (e.g., Ford Five Hundred sedan, Freestar minivan, etc.). Padilla and Mays took great…

NOTE: I figured somebody had to pick up the slack from 98's abscence, and post the latest Autoextremist articles. So I did. http://www.autoextremist.com/page6.shtml#table Detroit's NASCAR Infatuation. In an engaging interview with Mike Mulhern in last Friday's Winston-Salem Journal, Herb Fishel, the former longtime chief of GM Racing, let it hang out with his ongoing displeasure with NASCAR. Fishel told Mulhern that NASCAR is stuck "on a plateau" and that, "For the first time in recent memory there is no big story, no big direction. There has always been something that the world couldn't wait to hear more about. I don't remember a …

Link: http://autoextremist.com/page2.shtml#Rant The Kings of Short-Term Thinking Get Caught Flat-Footed - Yet Again. Detroit. The horrific, gut-wrenching scenes from the Deep South are grim and never-ending, and our hearts go out to everyone in the region, with the scope of the devastation and desperation impossible to comprehend. The effects from Katrina will be felt across this nation for years to come. But beyond the human toll and destruction brought on by the hurricane, we are now experiencing a furious storm of another kind that will cause a fundamental shift in the way the American driving public approaches vehicle purchase decisions and, in turn, a fundamen…

NOTE: I figured somebody had to pick up the slack from 98's abscence, and post the latest Autoextremist articles. So I did. Detroit. After wading through yet another glowing article about NASCAR, this time from Fortune magazine (September 5th cover date), it's clear to me that the mainstream media and sports marketing gurus have not only partaken of the NASCAR Kool-Aid, they've had taps installed in their houses for a constant free-flowing dose of it every morning. Members of the media in a kinder, gentler era would refer to Fortune's genuflection to and canonization of NASCAR as a "puff" piece. I'm not going to be that nice. This is 200…

I tend to visit manufacturers' websites quite often to gather facts about their cars and such. I'm sure most of your also do. Most of the time I am using my work computer, which has a mediocre business DSL Internet connection. I notice that some sites load fast while others load like slugs. I did this test about a year ago and decided I'd try it again. I timed each manufacturer's website load time using Internet Explorer 7, deleting the cache between each timing. I repeated the timing at least twice for the major manufacturers, and overall times were very consistent. The first number is the time it takes before the vehicle selector is available, since this is the most im…

Talk about a blast from the past, I saw an old Saturn the other day with those stupid automatic seat belts. They still worked too, I watched the guy get out of the car because I'm a creep like that. Or I was in awe. I hated those things in moms old Saturn, so glad they're gone.

I've thought about this a lot of times. They keep adding gears to these cars, but I'm not sure I'm much of a fan. I think six speeds is where it should be limited, maybe 8. My mom has a new Vue XR and it's the first 6 speed auto I've driven. It's a real smooth transmission, but it just seems like it shifts way too much, even if it's hardly noticeable. Yes, technology is getting better in these cars and soon you won't even know when the vehicle shifts at all, especially with dual clutches and all that good stuff. Maybe I'm old school though because I like to feel that upshift or occasional downshift to go WOT. Thoughts on this?

Do any of you know if there is a non-textbook type of book that shows the complete process of a car's development from beginning to end? I mean everything, the complete dirt. Timelines, how they put together things like the brochures, the owner's manual, the repair manual, advertising, what's the process of having parts etc ready at the dealerships, training, how they get parts suppliers involved and on and on.....I've always wanted to know all the nitty gritty behind the scenes stuff. Ha ha, maybe I am talking about a textbook!

While out today, standing at a street corner waiting for the walk light, I heard this throaty whail from a car behind me, and not having seen it, immediately I thought that sounds like an Infinity G35 Coupe....sure enough turned to see and it was. It has a great throaty warble to its exhaust. Some others I like are the new Corvette and the Mustang as well as the Audi 4(8cyl). Of course I just love the sound of an eight.

I have always wanted to start a collection of automotive stuff, but haven't yet. Who collects all things automotive here? Where do you source it? Who has something very unusual, rare? I've always like vintage photos and collectibles of gas stations....don't know why, but it just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Amongst taking pictures, snow shoveling, and a few other things done during the "Blizzard 2011 Snow Day" I had, Wednesday, February 2, 2011, I found myself watching old car ads online. It's not like I didn't have other things to do ... it was just a cool way to spend a part of the day. I noted a bunch of my favorites; the results are the links below. At the end, I'm including a few 2011 Super Bowl commercials.... I had hoped my Dad's home-town Steelers would win, but the Green Bay Packers win includes one person that connects to the 1985 Chicago Bears, who won the 1986 Super Bowl 25 years ago ... Wayne Larrivee. Wayne was the "voice of the Bears" in that 1985 season …

This isn't some "GM Death Watch" thread. This is industry-wide. Who do you think the next brand or company will be to leave the US market? There's been serious talk about Mitsu leaving, occasional talk about VW leaving, though I haven't had that impression myself. Then of course there's the occasional clamor for axing a GM brand. Isuzu is gone (practically has been for a while, though). So, who's next to leave the US market or shut down?

Basically... I'm just looking for an excuse to show off my lovely "Wall of Pontiac"... So.. uh... you can post pics to show your enthusiam for automobiles too... I guess... Yeeeah......  :D Anyways, my room is so small that I had to take many pics, and in some cases, crop two together, to show it all. Also, don't mock my Xmas decorations... Post what your own personal automotive Holy Grail is here; include pictures and a background story if you'd like I would recommend that you post no more than one vehicle per catergory... so that would mean one holy grail car/CUV/Minivan, one holy grail truck/SUV, one holy grail motorcycle, one holy grail airplane, etc. (you get the point )

Automotive paint schemes you like.... Loved the old red white and blue of the old AMC stuff.... I am still a sucker for 1950's two tone....and Ford Crown Vics. They look great as mild customs too! Perhaps my all time favorite car/color combination is the iris color Pontiac offered on the 1965 GTO! In my opinion, 65 GTO rates just behind the 1958-1962 Corvettes as just about the ultimate GM car ever.
