As if we don't have enough media bias to contend with... I usually listen to NPR (National Public Radio) on Saturdays, and sometimes I tune in to "Car Talk", a very slightly humorous show where people call in with their car problems and these two goofs, "The Tappet Brothers", try to diagnose them. They also use "humor" to convey some serious information and try to shape opinion. I was incensed yesterday to hear one of them mention some emails they received after a listener bragged on his "350,000 mile Lexus". They said they were sure there were no domestic cars that could go that long. One of the responses was from a listener with a '68 Buick Sportwagon with over 700,…

Okay, I'm throwing ideas out tonight for the wife's next car. Plans are to keep it used. (She doesn't want new anymore-"a waste of Money") Need more space than her Cavalier. Vue- Good on gas, plenty of room. Plastic (toddler proof!) G6- Also good on gas. Lots of room. (people room too) Cheap. What would you choose? Why?

I have decided to keep my truck for the foreseeable future. It runs great and returns good mileage for what it is. So I'm looking into some mild pimping options. Today I ordered a grille for it, with a carbon-fiber-look frame and chrome factory-style mesh, along with a billet bowtie (which I may refuse, I think I prefer the factory gold one to match the one on the tailgate). I am also looking into ordering from Putco a set of chrome mirror caps, chrome door handles and tailgate handle. If I could find a set of chrome inside door handles, I'd order those... I will wait to see if GM puts them in any trim level of the '07s, as I may order OE. I have also priced a Leer …

C&D just got up their test on the new MB C Coupe- C&D MB C300 Test - and had a largely positive review. This is a rather small, but hotly contested segment. So let's say you were spending between $40,000-55,000 on a new personal sport/lux coupe as a daily. What's your choice? Rules- 1)Must be a 2016 or 2017 MY car on sale now. 2)Must be a 2+2 2 door coupe. 3)Must be at least $40,000 and no more than $55,000 Have fun.

Yes, sad but true, my vacation is over, time to go back to work. I leave tomorrow morning for Switzerland. On the bright side, Mr. Burns has given me a new job assignment starting on September 1, 2008. It will bring me back to the Fatherland on special assignment. I will be bringing my kilt with me, as I am in a wedding Edinburgh, Scotland on the 20th of September (kilts are required)! I plan to visit Rosslyn Chapel while there, it has special significance to me.

I've been an advocate of RWD my whole life, but the upcoming Monte Carlo SS, I gotta admit, has me dreaming. My latest scheme is this... How about a white one with Ebony cloth interior (too bad there's no blue) and I'd add blue tape stripes around the bottom exactly like the '83 (except for the lettering)? For some odd reason I'd love to see what that would look like. Does that sound 80's retro cool or hopelessly tacky? Don't hold back, tell me what you really think, and while we're at it, are there any other new cars you'd like to see with retro graphics treatments? How about an '06 Mustang "King Cobra" taped out l…

...to replace your current older, high mileage car with a newer, low mileage example of the exact same model? Do people do it? Does it speak of my reluctance to change? Because I'm seriously considering trading in the white '99 Passat for a dark blue 2005 Passat. Or I could get a less lavishly appointed 2002 Audi A4 with higher miles, and an uglier color (silver...bleh), but get more "status" for my money. Thoughts? Comments? Opinions?

I realized we were still posting in the November thread (though really months have little meaning). Saw a very clean bronze '69 Olds 88 convertible today, top down. And did a double take when I saw a gray Pontiac Torrent in a parking lot..forgot that vehicle even existed. Looked like a 1st gen Equinox.

Scientists Harvest Stem Cells Without Destroying Embryo -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Breakthrough technique might get around moral issues, experts say By Amanda Gardner, HealthDay Reporter WEDNESDAY, Aug. 23 (HealthDay News) -- In what could prove to be a medical milestone, researchers have succeeded in generating new lines of human embryonic stem cells without destroying the embryo. The breakthrough may enable scientists to circumvent the ban on federal funding of stem cell research, paving the way for gains in treating or curing diseases such as diabetes, spinal injury and Alzheimer's disease. "The whole goal of …

If you could have a custom member title... what would yours be? Lately, this has been on my mind. Don't know why, but it has. Since I've been doing more personal things than Pontiac things... evidenced by my avatar. Well, I kind of think something along the lines of "The Sarcasm King" or "The King of Sarcasm" would fit me perfectly. I mean, I rarely leave it out of any of my posts. Don't know why, but I do. I guess it's just me. :P If I wanted to get funky... I could go with "Sarcasm is my Orgasm" :D *Disclaimer* I imply nothing.

As you gape at the below pictures and ready your snide 'see; old cars suck' commentary... please keep in mind that the pics you are used to seeing are 30-MPH impacts into stationary objects. The below pics (from the IIHS) were conducted from 43 to 49-MPH... BUT as both vehicles were moving towards each other, that's an 86 to 98-MPH impact. Still, and I agree: yikes.

Okay. So it's no secret that I'm not very Komputir savy. I used to mess around with software & hardware back a million years ago when I was in High School & College. These days though I'd much rather read about how to install my BMW's 'cartridge struts' or overhaul a Nailhead 364 than anything with a microprocessor. Trouble is, my retarded cat sat on my laptop's keyboard. She does ALL the time... except this time she managed to rotate my screen 90* on my laptop's primary monitor. I run a two-monitor setup so I've just been using the other one but I can't replicate the keystrokes or undo the changed setting. Windows Help shows nothing under …

All you starry-eyed CR worshippers that get the warm & fuzzies when quoting re-affirming company rhetoric, you may want to reach for some Valium. The associated Press is reporting this morning that the Yonker NY-based 'consumer advocate' magazine has retracted a strong, damning review of infant car seats (only 2 of 12 'recomended') when federal government review showed CR tested the seats at drastically higher speeds than they claimed. Most of CR's test samples showed 'disasterous failure' at speeds stated to be as low as 35 mph. One infant dummy was hurled 30 feet. But NHTSA revealed that some of the crash tests were conducted under conditions that would represent …

A coworker was test driving a customer's '04 Mountaineer today after replacing the transmission, when a Caravan ran a stop sign and t-boned him HARD in the driver's side, popping the head curtains (which probably saved his life). It sent the big Mountaineer over on its right side, sliding down the street, until it caught something, flipped into the air and landed ON TOP OF a Chevy pickup. The Mercury is smashed to smithereens, every single panel. The doctors say he broke no bones, and he'll only be sore for a few days. The center post on his side is a couple of inches into the driver's seat... unbelievable. He is a lucky man to have been driving such a strong SUV.

Wow, Christmas is about a day away. Getting ready to go home from work in about 1 hour. Tomorrow will be a casual dress day and I'm sure very little will be accomplished. I'm going to a concert at my friend's church in the evening and then to Midnight Mass since it will only be a few hours after that. Except for being invited to Christmas dinner, I have no travel plans. I'm not able to go up north since I didn't buy air tickets far enough in advance. Regardless, all is well. What are people doing over the holidays? Happy holidays!

Seat-belt your dog or face $1000 fine We know...it sounds absurd. "Click-it-or-ticket" warns us that we can, and will, get caught if we drive without a seatbelt. Most if not all states have now made it a primary offense under pressure from the Federal Government. But one state wants to extend the "click" to man's best friend riding in the passenger seat and sticking his head out the window. Under New Jersey Statute 4:22-18, unrestrained pets in vehicles is an act of animal cruelty, and drivers who don’t secure their pooch in a pet seat belt will be subject to fines, ranging from $250 to $1,000 and as much as six months in jail. "That’s for each offense,” Col. Frank …

What do you think are the sexiest trucks, SUVs, and crossovers out there on the market today (or coming within the next year)? Only truck I find that's sexy is the '06 Ram SRT-10 (especially in black).. Also, the only SUVs/crossovers I like are the Murano, FX45, and Acadia. These vehicles are awesome, IMO, and the only SUV-type vehicles I like the looks of. (I admit to liking most of the GMX-900s' styling, but they're too big for me)

(Reuters) - Hostess Brands Inc, the bankrupt maker of Twinkies and Wonder Bread, has sought a U.S. court's permission to go out of business after failing to get wage and benefit cuts from thousands of its striking bakery workers. Hostess, which has about $2.5 billion in sales from a long list of snack cakes and breads, filed the request with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York early Friday morning. The Irving, Texas-based company said the liquidation would mean that most of its 18,500 employees would lose their jobs. Hostess immediately suspended operations at all of its 33 plants across the United States as it moves to start liquidating assets, it said. "We'll be s…

Attention parents: It's not your kids that are making you go gray. Your hair is simply building up too much hydrogen peroxide. Bottle-blondes may be a fan, but hydrogen peroxide, which is produced naturally in the human body, interferes with melanin, the pigment that colors our hair and skin. The body also produces the enzyme catalase, which breaks down hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. Or at least it does for a while. As we age, catalase production tails off, leaving nothing to transform the hydrogen peroxide into chemicals the body can release. So, as hydrogen peroxide builds up, we go gray, concluded researchers at the University of Bradford in the United …

Yup, Borders Books, in the periodicals I was, looking at the car magazines (with my back to the gay magazines) when these two guys, dressed up-to-the-minute, 20-something, walk up to the gay magazine section. One of them pulls up a copy of "Gay Times" and laughs. They both look at the dude on the cover, then laugh again. "Hey, we should send in a subscription for (insert a missing friend's name here). That would be hilarious! We could put his address on it and everything!" They linger there, then move on... I need to ask a question here... what's the fascination? Would they have had as much fun looking at a yoga magazine? A magazine on knitting, rock climbing,…

Interesting article here about commercial vans being the next "big thing" in the marketplace. Can't say that we haven't already discussed this topic here, but in the article there's an interesting picture that has caught my attention. Ford will be bringing over the larger Transit to replace the Econoline model, and if it came directly as this: I think I'd be tempted to change over to Ford for my next family hauler and give the wife what she wants (a minivan). Can't wait to see where this new market goes!!

So my aunt came over for Christmas as always, but she wasn't sure she was going to make it on Christmas Eve, as her Subaru Outback wouldn't start, but finally turned over after an hour's delay. She drove it here and it made it, and then it started fine on Christmas and the day after, when we took it to the dealer's service department. While it was in service being looked at, we went out looking. First up was the CR-V. For some reason she thinks their cute, and I guess we all have our own opinions. She thought it was what she really wanted, and had high hopes. She picked out one she liked (sticker was $28.5k) and we were on our way. We both thought it was terrible. Harsh…

I resigned from one a couple of months ago. I worked there for almost 3 years. The first 2 years were fine, but one day in early 2006, 6 people (the most promising employees) out of 40 quit and started their own firm. (They were guys who hung out together outside of work and did the beer/shooting range thing, so those of us who didn't "fit in" weren't invited along...no hard feelings). About 10 more left during 2006 because the atmosphere had become depressing. I thought about quitting immediately as their work would fall on other people's shoulders and stress everybody out, but I had to consider the following: - a hair under 2 years would not look good on a resum…

New spyware could prevent drivers from speeding CTV.ca News Staff Many motorists would balk at the idea of an electronic back-seat driver that forcefully prevents them from speeding. But a new device being road-tested by Transport Canada could mean breaking the speed limit will no longer be an option. Using global positioning satellite technology and a digital speed-limit map, the device makes it difficult for drivers to press down on the accelerator once they go above a certain speed limit. The idea is sure to appeal to many road-safety experts, but the researcher in charge of the project admits some drivers will not welcome the idea of a machine that forces…

Barnes&Noble always has a busy parking lot. So yesterday I found a spot and went in to browse. When I came out to leave, I put the truck in Drive and was about to let my foot off the brake when this woman in an Accord driving one-handed with a cell phone in her ear whips in front of me, and parks in the hash lines, which of course is not a legal parking spot. I saw this while perusing the 'net... I don't know whether to laugh or cry. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp...duct_id=4087955 I'm guessing the waiting lists for this one are a whole lot shorter :P And since its Wal-Mart, it's probably the only place to get the solstice at a discount  -Pharm.D

Is it 1973 because of the catalytic converters? Maybe 1977, with the beginning of the boxy styling craze (including rectangular headlights)? Is it somewhere in the 80s, with the switch to fuel injection and the death of chrome bumpers? Or is it the 90s, when all these transitions were complete and every car was officially "computerized" (with more crapola to come)? Can the cutoff year slide into more recent years? Or did one prick just say "it stops at the 50s!" and it just is what it is and will be for all time?

Job seekers with no ties to any particular location often seek jobs in big cities like New York, Chicago, Los Angeles or San Francisco. But are these the places where they're most likely to find a job? Not according to the most recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Job seekers are better off looking in such cities as Sioux Falls, S.D., Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Rapid City, S.D. All of these cities registered the lowest unemployment rates in July 2008. Low unemployment rates seem harder to come by in today's economy. Jobless rates were higher in 338 of the 369 U.S. metropolitan areas surveyed this July, which means 92 percent of cities have seen an increase in…

What do you get when you add this, this, and this? Which one of these is it? This one: Pic 1, Pic 2; this one: Pic 1, Pic 2; or this one: Pic 1, Pic 2? Now, which of these are more 'true' to the their brands than certain other(s)? So, who knows the answers?

I'm sad to say tonight that I've lost my grandfather to failure of the heart. He'd been in the hospital for six weeks and he had a Valve Replacement Surgery on the 15th of December. As it turns out something went wrong with a different part of the heart after the surgery and he had been on full life support. He began to peter out this evening and I had a Calculus Final at the university until 9PM, I arrived within enough time to say my final goodbyes to a man who has meant so much to me. I suppose if there is a silver lining in his passing, it's that in a Biopsy done during the surgery it was discovered that he had Lung Cancer, and it had progressed to the point where…

I got back from Montreal Tuesday afternoon after our flight was cancelled Monday evening due to hail in Chicago. It was a good time over there...I did a lot of walking and sightseeing. Anyway, here are some interesting observations I had while I was over there. Everybody dresses up all the time. Doesn't matter if it's Monday morning, Saturday night, or Sunday afternoon...they're always dressed to go out on the town. I have never seen a place where strip clubs are right next to shoe stores and family eateries. Rue St-Catherine and Boulevard St-Laurient had little strip clubs and sex shops nestleld in among all the "family-friendly" businesses. People don't have m…

Quietly, and without fanfare, a trend started in the automotive industry – the elimination of spare tires. It is not a new trend – cars without standard spare tires have existed for some years now, but until now they were exotic sports cars, or high-end luxury cars. Unfortunately, that is about to change with this trend going mainstream. Up to this point the most extreme case of the lack-of-a-tire syndrome were the GM roadster twins – they did not even offer a spare as an option – the trunk on both cars is simply is not big enough. The GM twins, however just followed the trend in many luxury models that either came with run-flat tires or “tire inflation kit” (read: bottl…

I want to hear better stories than mine. New Year's Eve - worked the whole day while others split early. Went on a mission to clean up my whole place and put everything in order for the new year and got a damn good start - paperwork, backing up computer, etc. Went out and chatted with neighbors at around that time. New Year's Day - was an idiot... went to Tahoe. Thought I'd have the place to myself... 65,000 people had partied there the night before and were still hanging around. 20 minutes in line at Starbucks, etc. I got over the pass over there without chains. Started raining at about 5 pm and, at 6,000 to 7,000 feet, it was snowing but wit…

Let's first say that this is the first non-GM product my family has owned, and the GM dealership where we always take our vehicles gives us very fair prices. Anyways, my brother's Civic had it's first service warning light and code come on this week (I guess all Hondas do this). The code was B12, meaning the car thinks it's time for an oil change, air filter change, cabin air filter change, and tire rotation (plus inspection of whatever). My dad called the Honda dealership to see what the code meant, and then scheduled an appointment. They told him it would be $260 to do everything the car "needed." Now we've only put 3k miles on the car since buying it, and the tires w…

I guess, I will be one of the 1st to kiss my ass goodbye! Discovery or doom? Collider stirs debate Chapter 2: Cutting through the hype over black holes and future benefits By Alan Boyle Science editor MSNBC updated 5:03 p.m. ET, Mon., Sept. 8, 2008 Will the Large Hadron Collider save the world, or destroy it? As the atom-smasher at Europe's CERN research center is readied for its official startup on Wednesday, researchers might wish that the general public was captivated by the quest for the Higgs boson, the search for supersymmetric particles and even the evidence for extra dimensions. But if the feedback so far is any guide, the real headline-grabber…

My dad is slipping away minute by minute and taking care of him becomes a bit more difficult each day. My family is on constant call and we have been taking turns dealing with the off-hour care that he needs. It's a truly draining experience and all of us are tired - most of all my dad. The hardest part is how much more difficult it is to communicate with him now and to understand him on the rare occassions when he speaks. He is less present all the time and aware only in a vague way. The experience is even more overwhelming than I had ever thought it would be. This may sound stupid, but I'm not really looking for sympathy with this post. It's more the need to just "put…

Had a great day, today, meeting up with Camino, Z-06 and his fiance (hopefully she'll join up soon with a screen name of her own!). The weather could not have been more perfect. It was good to meet new friends and to catch up with Mr. El Camino. Thanks again, as well, for the hospitality shown to us by Camino's mother from her peaceful little corner of the world.

Thought I'd make a thread about cars one doesn't see all that often... and are somewhat inconspicuous that just appeal to one for some reason. Rare? Exotic? Expensive? Not necessarily. For me... I'll start off with something that's not a 240SX.... 86-89 Celicas.

The girl I'm dating is a software consultant like me. She's just started a new placement, and is very nervous about it, wanting to be sharp for work each day. I've gotten her to come to my place for dinner during the week, and to go out for dinner a couple of times. I asked her to go to a karaoke place tonight - and I know she likes these places, she's told me this, so that's not the issue. I can't seem to convince her to go anywhere. I'm not sure if you can really built a relationship if you can only see the person on the weekend. Is there anything I can do? Suggestions for better things to do that will have her home early? Am I being paranoid and should just let it …

Went to a local car show on Sunday and found this '70 El Camino SS for sale: Black interior with bucket seats, 396 c.i. V8 was under the hood, and a manual trans shifter was visible inside. PM me if you'd like the phone # (sorry, no price info was available at the show). And just for Camino, I spotted this beauty at a nearby dealership (Walt's Pontiac dealership fyi)... I think as you're getting up there in age ( ), you should forget the Ute and get yourself one of these: ... ... ... ... ... ... ... At your age, a nice, comfoy ride and shifting done for you may be the best bet. Just messin' with ya man!!!
