Did you guys see that article about a study that revealed that DOGS and their associated needs (for example, growing food for them, etc.) cause more pollution than the world's automobiles? I love dogs, they are the most loyal, loving pet a man can have, but this study just highlights how ridiculous the car haters have gotten, and how hypocritical the "climate change OMG" movement really is. woof!

During my morning drive to work, I tend to listen to several different morning radio shows. On Friday, one of the morning duos posed this question to its audience: "What makes someone a Loser?" I laughed at some of the replies that were called in, including one guy that mentioned: "You're a loser if you don't cheer for the home team in a sporting event." Course, that was mentioned because of the upcoming playoff game between the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints. Apparently, many Saints fans live here in Chicago. Plus, the "sentimental favorite" for the game is, of course, the Saints because of what happened to New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. Though, that…

As I drive around, of course I'm always observing vehicles around me, it's some sort of obsession I have. So I got thinking of things about current design details that so many manufacturers share. I was wondering, who was the first? A. Plastic covered bumpers B. 'Round' tailights, meaning this overdone trend of round within a larger form. C. Rear spoilers D. Huge headlights....will this ever go away? E. Wedge/triganular tailights....I have grown to dislike this shape....almost every car does it. F. Five spoke wheels...has become so generic.

...to me it's the lack of a social network outside of C and G. With the Miata thing, the SCCA thing, and the VW thing, I have active local clubs that are fun to be involved with. Running an SCCA autocross, going to a 4th of july party, doing a 4th of July parade, running a Buckeye Miata Club autocross, going to two get togethers with the VW club... But nothing social locally with any GM people. Seems like you run into a few old guys at car shows, but VERY few real GM fans around here. So I guess this is my way of saying thanks for posting here to everyone that does, because there are a lot of GM cars I love and I love talking about them. What is your least fav. …

While out driving this afternoon, I was doing a bit of radio channel surfing and caught the end of 'Prairie Home Companion'...apparently, the show has Toyota as a sponsor, 'cause Garrison Keillor was saying something to the effect that Toyota has increased the production of the Prius, making it easier than ever to get yourself one. Hmmm.... the bastion of upper Midwestern square has sold out! (I'd picture GK being more of a staid Oldsmobile or Volvo man than a Pious driver)..

One thing that interests me lately about Japanese cars, and culture in general, is their propensity for miniaturization. Our small cars, it seems, are scaled-down big cars, while Japanese cars are engineered in miniature... yet everything seems to work in harmony. Like a Tokyo apartment.

So How Many Kids Can Fit Into A Mazda Hatchback? William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com August 29, 2011 A South African man learned the hard way that you shouldn't try to fit many kids into one car. The unnamed man was stopped near Cape Town. When police took a look at the Mazda hatchback he was driving, they saw seventeen kids sitting or laying down in the car. Three kids were in the front seat with the driver, while the other fourteen were back making the most of the hatchback room with the seats folded. Police arrested the man for carrying to many people in his car, driving with a suspended license, and his car being found unroadworthy. …

Been thinking that perhaps a new sort of isolationism might be a good thing for us right now. Not the old " let's ignore the rest of the world and use protectionism in our dealings with other countries" way. Just a strictly non-interventionist, and locally focused sort of way. The idea of what else defines this idea is still floating around in my head and not fully formed yet. But I see some logical reasons for it. Thoughts?

Going to do a bit of stocking up on food (Water, stuff like that) because what used to be 2.49 for a case of water is now 3.99 in just a matter of a month or so...seems like everything is going up quick! I'm starting repairing (or updating) the cars earlier to save a few bucks, and finish preparing for a rough rest of the year's weather. Even stocking up on oil...can;t beat a synthetic at 3.38/qt.... I wasn't even on the road! I was backing the Sunfire out of the driveway, the HHR was to my left and the van was behind me. I was concentrating on not stalling (because I do that too much) and cut left too soon and my left front fender ran into the HHR's rear bumper. So the HHR's bumper only has some scuffs but my Sunny's fender is all caved in. Do I know how to start the year off with a bang or what!

One broke my mirror! On my way to school today, I hit a deer. It wacked its head off my mirror and brushed against the side. That popped the actual mirror off and since my car was/is dirty, put some nice scratches on the side. They can probably be buffed out, though. It's hard to explain why I hit it. I saw them, but I never slowed. I kept on going. Once it hit I was literally like "What the..?" I must have been half asleep or something. I guess this just tells me I need to start drinking Coffee in the morning. :D

All you starry-eyed CR worshippers that get the warm & fuzzies when quoting re-affirming company rhetoric, you may want to reach for some Valium. The associated Press is reporting this morning that the Yonker NY-based 'consumer advocate' magazine has retracted a strong, damning review of infant car seats (only 2 of 12 'recomended') when federal government review showed CR tested the seats at drastically higher speeds than they claimed. Most of CR's test samples showed 'disasterous failure' at speeds stated to be as low as 35 mph. One infant dummy was hurled 30 feet. But NHTSA revealed that some of the crash tests were conducted under conditions that would represent …

Favoring domestic drilling over alternative energy won't work because even if every last inch of public territory were open to drilling, it would add only .16 million barrels per day to the global oil supply and it wouldn't even come online till 2017 The world consumed 86 million barrels per day in 2007. In highly technical terms "drop in bucket". Money Quote:

Today I woke up early with all sorts of grand plans to get things accomplished. I took care of the dogs and walked to the Silverado to go get my morning coffee - that's when things turned bad. The Silverado had a very flat tire. So, I think OK I can deal with that and proceed to attempt to change the tire. Well, after getting all of the never-used jack and lug wrench stuff out from its compartment behind the seat, I take off the centercap and try the first lug. Stuck. I mean really stuck. I fight with it for a while with no effect, then actually stand on the lug wrench - no movement. I start to jump on the lug wrench and It finally started to move. I think "g…

Why, Tuscon, AZ of course Got these in an email this morning, and I've seen this "boneyard" in person. Military aircraft as far as the eye can see. Email text follows: I agree it is difficult to comprehend the size of the facility and the number of aircraft stored there. Of course the important thing to remember is that they are all capable of being returned to flying condition if the need ever arises. There was an excellent book published a few years ago on the celebration of the "Boneyard's" 50 anniversary. It was written by Philip D. WASHINGTON -- The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants the flyswatter in chief to try taking a more humane attitude the next time he's bedeviled by a fly in the White House. PETA is sending President Barack Obama a Katcha Bug Humane Bug Catcher, a device that allows users to trap a house fly and then release it outside. "We support compassion even for the most curious, smallest and least sympathetic animals," PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich said Wednesday. "We believe that people, where they can be compassionate, should be, for all animals." During an interview for CNBC at the White House on Tuesday, a fly intruded on Obama's conversation with corr…

I'm sad to say tonight that I've lost my grandfather to failure of the heart. He'd been in the hospital for six weeks and he had a Valve Replacement Surgery on the 15th of December. As it turns out something went wrong with a different part of the heart after the surgery and he had been on full life support. He began to peter out this evening and I had a Calculus Final at the university until 9PM, I arrived within enough time to say my final goodbyes to a man who has meant so much to me. I suppose if there is a silver lining in his passing, it's that in a Biopsy done during the surgery it was discovered that he had Lung Cancer, and it had progressed to the point where…

I got back from Montreal Tuesday afternoon after our flight was cancelled Monday evening due to hail in Chicago. It was a good time over there...I did a lot of walking and sightseeing. Anyway, here are some interesting observations I had while I was over there. Everybody dresses up all the time. Doesn't matter if it's Monday morning, Saturday night, or Sunday afternoon...they're always dressed to go out on the town. I have never seen a place where strip clubs are right next to shoe stores and family eateries. Rue St-Catherine and Boulevard St-Laurient had little strip clubs and sex shops nestleld in among all the "family-friendly" businesses. People don't have m…

So it's been raining since what seems like forever...I think Friday night. It's really grinding my gears. In the past week I've gone to start the Prizm and twice it wouldn't start. First time was corrosion all over teh negative connector and terminal (non on the new positive one). Cleaned it up and life was good until the 2nd time. Cleaned it some more and put some grease on it. Seemed fine until i went to run an errand this morning and it did the same thing. Last Saturday (over a week ago), I am floating around a lake on an air mattress and was essentially dry, enjoying a beautiful day. Between boat wake and some wind, I picked up a few ripples of water. I adjusted myself on the mattress and fell in. Hitting the cold water sent a painful jolt through me and I must have jerked because I had excruciating pain from my shoulder through my fingers on one side. How I drove home is beyond me. I was miserable at work all week. I went to the doctor and got anti-inflammatory and pain killer meds. People at work even told me I looked miserable. I even took Wednesday off just so I could sleep and take all my medicine doses. So…

Just a little reminder why these hideous things sell. What's funny is as I walked towards my uncle's house I saw the car and said "aw man that thing's ugly...". I'm just glad I made no comments when I went in to the house. I could have offended her. But think about it. What other car company sells a vehicle with an interior that can be hosed down? GM had the Envoy XUV, for a good $20k more than the Element sells for. They also had the Aztek, which was a similar concept, both in form and in function. And pick-up trucks, well, in general it's not a good idea to keep a dog in the outer compartment of a moving vehicle.

Been a while since we did one of these. A lot of great vehicles had their last hurrah for the 2018 Model Year. From mainstream offerings, to exotics, many models had their demise. This thread will be dedicated to those. You can choose either cars that were discontinued entirely, had specific trim levels axed, or lost body styles. Rules- 1) Must be 2018 MY 2) Choices must be offered in your market 3) Production vehicles only 4) Choices must have been discontinued, replaced with new model, had a body style dropped, etc 5) Maximum of 5 choices 6) These are your only vehicles Have fun!

My mother is looking to trade her 2003 Eclipse GT in on something new. The car barely fits in the garage as-is, so we have a very limited length requirement of 190" or under. She wants it to be under $40k, but not necessarily that high. She wants something "not too June Cleaver-ish" in her words. 2-door is desired but can be overlooked if she likes the design. Same for a convertible top. She's already told me that the G6 would be OK but the new Malibu is a little too family-looking for her. Since she is coming from a 200 hp V6, something of at least similar performance would also be a requirement. I'm trying to come up with possibilities. All I can really come u…

I just put an ad in the local issue of Auto Locator for my truck, a classified ad magazine available at most newsstands. $34 for two weeks, it comes out weekly. I have to wait for it to be approved Monday morning for publication in the next issue, and inclusion in their online classifieds. I need bites!

CARFAX has been hunting down & suing forums and individuals that allow this kind of misuse of their services. Posting a thread like inquiring about someone using their CARFAX for you, especially if someone then looks up the info & posts it back, puts Cheers & Gears at risk for lawsuit. It is for this reason that we request that members do not post such threads. CARFAX may seem like a ripoff for looking up one VIN, however a lawsuit would be far more expensive in the long run. Thank you for understanding. -C&G Staff

Got your attention? Gather around the campfire kids I've got a tale for you. This is a perfect truth is stranger than fiction scenario. Unfortunately it has a very tragic & sad ending... First off some of you may remember "Mr.Death". About a year ago I owned, for a short time a rotted, tired & neglected 1970 Cadillac Coupe deVille seafoam green with a tan interior & black top. There's a long story about why that car was called "Mr.Death", but this is not the time or the place for that. <----- "Mr.Death" Well recently I've been talking quite a bit about another Cadillac beater... I've had a two Fleetwood Broughams & several other Cadi…

And I was just looking at random past concept cars, and came across one that looked... well... familiar in a way. The 1997 Mazda MS-X. Minus the wrap around rear window, it looks like a miniature version of a softer A&S Cadillac.

Well, started a new little job on the side this week for a small used car dealership in St. Petersburg. I'm kind of their internet sales guy, taking pictures of the new arrivals and posting them up on Cars.com, Craigslist, etc. and trying to set up appointments for showings. Kinda fun and I must admit the fast-paced dealer environment is a little fun. Again, its a small lot (~25 cars), but it keeps pretty busy with 5-10 new cars in every week. Anyway, just thought I'd share. Here's an example of a listing I put together. Hopefully it makes you want to buy it! Clicky

A little back story first: Well it seems that the Shadow has had it. It still runs fine and all but when I took it to the mechanic last week to have the headlighst looked at (sometimes they wouldn't turn on) and asked him to look at the cause of a small amount of smoke I sometimes see coming from the hood I got some unsettling, though not entirely unexpected news. As you guys may remember, it leaks oil and tranny fluid, this I know...not assloads but still some, and I had a suspicion that oil leaked onto the tanny and when it got hot so did the oil, hence the smoke. Well I was right...but there's more It leaks oil from: Oil Pan Camshaft Valve Cover It lea…

Lets try this again, but we'll start with my counter-point to the points that started the other (now locked) thread. I used 1400+ texts last month, compared to less than 6 hours of talk time. Texting is great for short questions that have short answers. I text several of my co-workers because they always have their cell phones, and their not always at their desks. My ex and I text in regards to our son and when he's going to be where and with whom. I hate phone calls where one person needs a small piece of information because they always end up dragging on longer than they should. My fiancee and I send each other random dirty/incredibly stupid texts throughout the …

I have an NEC "MultiSync LCD 1765" monitor, and it has a vertical blue line about a third of the way across the screen. Should I be prepared for the worst? Will it operate indefinitely like this? It is only slightly annoying.

I've noticed that this is sort of a culture thing, it seems. Almost everyone around me are the kind of people who buys cars, use it for a few years and dump it. I've once told my friend that I will keep my G6 for a long time, he thinks I'm insane. What's your attitude towards your car?

You and your significant other NEED to get away...and soon! That's exactly what WE needed to do and did. But our choice of getaway was an almost kitchy Pocono resort...any less red paint would have been tacky, but as it turns out this much made it fun! The place is called Paradise Stream and it's a couple's all-inclusive resort. Check out our little getaway to the Poconos in the latest issue of Automotive Traveler. We had a great time and you will too! http://automotivetraveler.com/jump/3103 What do you think of it?

http://www.iihs.org/news/rss/pr080207.html video: low-speed crash test results, midsize luxury cars, August 2007 Bumpers on luxury cars aren't luxurious: worst is Infiniti G35; 4 of 11 cars sustain more than $10,000 damage in 4 minor bumps ARLINGTON, VA — Bumpers, even those on expensive cars, don't resist damage in low-speed impacts. The Infiniti G35, the worst performer, sustained almost $14,000 damage in a series of 4 tests conducted at 3 and 6 mph by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Saab 9-3 was the best, sustaining $5,243 damage. Only 3 cars sustained less than $6,000 damage, while 4 would cost more than $10,000 to fix. "The Infiniti was a disaster…

Over the last week, I've looked at a number of cars as a potential "winter beater" or "winter beater/road warrior"...3 of those on Saturday, November 8. I tend to come across either FWD coupes or RWD sedans. I'd prefer a RWD coupe.... '78 Caprice Classic sedan ...asking $3500 ...nice car, orange in color with tan vinyl top, but too good of condition to use as a winter beater, imo. ...not too keen on vinyl tops ... or the vinyl seats it had ... or it being a sedan. ...Possible name = Orange Flame '89 Caprice Classic sedan ...asking $2500 ...nice car on the outside; 2-tone blue. ...appeared to have some leaks into the interior and, when I drove it, the h…

Wow, it seems only yesterday a cousin of mine was asking me advice on what trim level she should get in a Mazda Protege. Her 323 hatchback had racked up a lot of miles, and she was ready to get something "more mature". She was set on another Mazda (which she bought after her much-liked '82 Cavalier Type 10 hatchback got totalled in a rearend collision), so I told her she should go for the hotrod, the ES. She listened to me and got herself what has been a Great Little Car for her. We went to the Ren Faire in it today... 174k miles and still mechanically in good condition, she's never put a clutch in it, for example. It's a rattletrap, some of the interior parts show a…

What would you guys think if we offered forums for sponsorship with a small link to a sponsoring site, i.e. Would this be too obtrusive or diminish from the C&G experience? Just FYI, this would not lead to every forum being sponsored. This is currently just one forum, likely the Ford forum.

Vehicles that aren't your "type" but you're interested in anyway. Hopefully an ongoing thread. Many of us have a type that we go for... whether that be in dating or in cars. Tell us your type and then tell us a car that defies that type that you're still interested in. For me: I like big luxury cruisers. Buick Lacrosse, Cadillac CTS and STS, Lincoln MKS. I really dislike cute utes, crossovers, and sport utility vehicles. My admiration for the Avalanche come more from it's utility than it's aesthetic though as far as trucks go, it's one of the best looking. but one SUV keeps catching my eye. The interior is really a put off, but I can't help but stop and stare a…

1. Aspen----Why? I rode in one of these before, and noticed a shaky, plastic-filled ride. Hideous styling, Dodge Durango ripoff. *** 2. Compass----Again, Why? This, sir, is no Jeep! Ugh, what were they thinking, a mother's on-road Jeep? *** 3. Sebring----So-so styling, plastic-filled interior. Put simply enough: Not good enough. 4. Caliber----Not the prettiest Dodge ever, let me tell ya that. And how so is this a Neon replacement? My stomach growls in disgust at it. 5. PT Cruiser----Whoever wanted one already owns one. The styling was OK at its introduction, now it's just sad and pathetic. *** 6. Grand Caravan---- Not a Dodge. Just no. The Town & Country is bad i…

Well, through a series of unexpected events, myself and my General Manager from LOR Motorcars ended up with some old friends of his from Plaza Dodge at their lot in Hudson, Florida called Auto Corral. These guys are wholesalers who buy new car trades from big dealers and resell them at the local autctions. For retail, that means we get the cars cheaper and they mostly always good Florida cars. I'm the ISM (Internet Sales Manger) of three stores now - Auto Corral, Sunshine Motors (literally around the block), and AC Motorsports, which has a large inventory of motorcycles, scooters, ATVs and other randomness. Between the two stores, we have over 100 vehicles, including weir…

I think we've had threads like this before, but maybe not on the new forum. Anyways, last night I took out four of my friends on a country road with no one around and we went 132MPH in the GTO before we had to shut it down (stop sign). I could tell a noticealbe difference in acceleration with 600 extra pounds of weight in the car, but it still picked up pretty damn quickly. Somewhat amazingly, the GTO still felt totally under control and stable at that speed. We also did some sweet donuts in a parking lot with plenty of smoke, but that's another story. On a side note, I think I've been at 115+ 4 times now. So, what's the fastest everyone's gone in a vehicle?
