See, I wasn't kidding--the plane in the background is the Lockheed L188 Electra, a 4-engined turboprop that began its career in 1957. I flew on one of these circa 1965, between Denver, CO and Sioux Falls, SD. A few L188 Electras are still in use today, usually for fire-fighting.

so, in Jan i had to bring in my car to get some body damage fixed from an accident. had an 08 focus loaner. fast forward to today. i dropped my car off for a couple weeks to get hail damage fixed. so again, i get an 08 Focus loaner. Cheeky little car. I am sure blu is jealous. Driving the small car is an adjustment all the time but this Focus is a nice little commuter. I had test drove an Astra XR recently and that car was a blast. It is indeed a better driving car than the Focus. HOWEVER. I TOTALLY am liking the focus from an interior amenities and convenience standpoint. Enough that it tips the scales in its favor for me.....I think. Everything is l…

So I'm parked at night unloading a van, 4 ways on, doors open... and a stupid ass in a BMW SUV drives up behind me trying to make the right turn. I see his turn signal on... and that he has one fog light out. After lots of waving, they finally get a clue and and put the other turn signal on... drive around... I notice the fog light goes out and the other fog light comes on. Finally in front of me, I see the fog light has switched sides again to follow the turn signal. Kind of interesting. Not sure it was that useful, but interesting. Is this a new feature in the BMW X-series? Any other cars have this feature?

My folks have been looking into getting a new car recently. Their criteria was midsized FWD/AWD v6 car. Now my folks had always been on the get a new car every 3 years or so cycle until my dad decided to retire from his law practice in 2003 because he couldn't take the stress and how it exhaserbated his illness anymore (he has MS.) So now he teaches law and does internal stuff at Yale. With our house in westport finally sold and our expenses realigned after four years of learning to live more economically and on less in general, he and my mom felt it's time to replace their 2000 intrigue. Now I have to give props to the intrigue. best car we have ever owned h…

You may have noticed on the front page a new block with the three main social media networks in the upper right. Can I ask a favor of you for all of those on Facebook and/or Google+? Can you like us on each of the networks you belong to? In the case of facebook, this is different than liking our Facebook page, this is liking the Website on Facebook. So even if you already follow our Facebook page, please use the button on the front page again. The number of "likes" a webpage has on Facebook is factored into our website ratings which I will explain in a separate post. Currently, we have 3 "likes" on facebook. Can we get to 25 "likes" on Facebook this weekend?

In this week's Autoweek "Driver's Log", they tested an '06 Civic Si and an '06 Charger 3.5L SE. As tested fuel mileage, Civic: 17.79 mpg As tested fuel mileage, Charger: 23.7 mpg Now I know they had to rev the piss out of the Civic to get it moving, but this is ridiculous. You know these guys leadfooted the Dodge as well, which makes these results all the more hilarious.

How often DO we let the attitudes of others affect our mood? How many arguments/"flame wars" would be prevented if we stopped to THINK before we typed/posted or spoke? --- "The Law of the Garbage Truck." How often do you let other people's nonsense change your mood? Do you let a bad driver, rude waiter, curt boss, or an insensitive employee ruin your day? The mark of a successful person is how quickly she can get back her focus on what's important. Sixteen years ago I learned this lesson in the back of a New York City taxi cab. Here's what happened.... I hopped in a taxi, and we took off for Grand Central Station. We were driving in the right lane when, all of a …

I don't like the following: Any meat you have to work (ribs) or that is too red, but love tri-tip, sirloin and London Broil, for example Any fish you have to work (mussels, clams, crab), but love swordfish, halibut, and shark, for example Hate pecan pie Can't tolerate any spicy cuisines like Thai, Indian or Ethiopian - guaranteed to be "out of commission" in 2 hours, but like Cantonese Chinese and Japanese What are specific food items or cuisines you won't eat?

So the Bonneville is in need of repairs and has numerous annoyances at the moment... much more than I'm willing to pay for. Plus, with two kids, I'm out of space when it comes to traveling. Ergo, I'm seriously looking to let it go and move into something bigger. As the thread title suggests, my budget is really low, to the tune of no more than $8000. Now I realize that most of the vehicles I look for in this price range will be high in miles, but there are some reasonable examples out there on a miles-per-year basis. So, fellow C&Gers, here's my short list in order of preference: 1) GMT360s, preferably with 7 seats. Pros: Not a weak engine in the bunch, space, …

The GOP is traditionally claimed that taxes are too high on corporations, that to generate jobs taxes on corporations should be lowered. McCain bleats this regularly. I've probably met the most interesting person I'm going to meet while working at a parts store. Yesterday a gentleman came in to pick up an Optima battery he had ordered. He brought the core with him, a battery sold by us 6 years ago. Generally, a battery that old is not the prettiest thing. They range from dirty to downright scary. This one wasn't though, it looked practically new. I happened to comment on it and he told me its because it came out of a DeLorean. I like DMC 12s, so I asked him a bit about it. As it turns out, Patrick Shea and his father own not one, but three of them. One of them is a restored DeLorean, another was restored and converted into an accurat…

I do not know if anybody has used this before, but Synergy, is a software using which you can hook-up up to eight computers to one keyboard and mouse (of the mother computer). No more having virtual desktop, or other LAN based shebang. So as long all your computers are seeing one network, Synergy works fine. I am using it and I love it. What is cool is that the software lets you copy and paste from one computer to other. If you do not have capability of setting up a network, there is a free online VPN known as Hamachi; it is secured compared to other VPN's and the best part is that you can access any of your computers from anywhere in the world so as long you hav…

Low mileage, super-charged, no scratches or dings, slim attractive design. Performs great, but requires premium fuel. Recommend only filling up at Macy’s or Saks otherwise performance not guaranteed. Fuel from other locations may cause failure to start. People afraid of exotic Italian maintenance costs should look elsewhere. Was fun when I first got it, as the maintenance bills piled up, the fun factor went down. Requires synthetic oil. Recently being used by other drivers, but always garaged at home. Requires *HUGE* amount of garage space for the multitude of tires. Has NAV system, but generally drives where it wants, when it wants without regard for the owner. NAV sys…

...I will not be plowing a snowstorm. The ROPOS made it through the last massive snowfall, and a second day of cleanup plowing, just fine. But yesterday when I went to move it, reverse was gone from the trans. After a mad dash to find the right trans, all efforts have failed - so for the first time ever, I will not be able to meet my obligations as far as plowing goes. I guess 25 years of not missing a single storm is a pretty good record, but it still makes me feel like $h! to have to admit defeat and bring that streak to a close. Up until today, I had been out there pushing snow in every single snowstorm since '85, and driven in every one since '79.…

Aside from sitting on C&G what are your hobbies? I have 2 main hobbies... Winter Hobby, snowmobiling. I'm kinda wondering if my Playstation 2 is about the kick the bucket or something.... I have one of the old playstation 2 (the nice big ones), and it is starting to have issues. I'm currently playing NHL 2007, and it seems like the game is getting "stuck". I'll be playing, score a goal, and there will be like a 5 second delay before the horn sounds... The game itself is fine, and I tried a Nascar game too, and it will do the same thing after a while... Though I have noticed if I play hard for while (and does this with te Nascar game), it almost makes a clicking or disk jumping sound.... It has been just fine up till the last few days.... Could you please send out a prayer to help my grandfather up to God's home? I would really appreciate it. He's one of the greatest, wisest men I've ever met, and he's everything a grandpa should be. He worked a really hard life since the time he was 16 on the railroad tracks, then the military, then multiple other jobs (including Packard and Chrysler, where he retired after about 25 years). If you go to Wikipedia and search on "Star Trek (movie)" and scroll down, you'll see a picture of the new Enterprise bridge with Kirk (Chris Pine.....oooooo so f@#king hot) and McCoy...... I have to say.....the new bridge is SO cool, it's incredible....! Somehow, they were able to design a bridge that looks futuristic compared to today's times.....yet captures the "cheesy" spirit of the original (and I say "cheesy" in a good way.) Think "Enterprise" meets "Apple's IPod" and you'll get an idea of what it looks like. AND, Pine's "slouch" in the captain's chair seems PURE William Shatner..... http://www.forbes.com/sites/louiswoo...kruptcy-again/ From the article: President Obama is proud of his bailout of General Motors. That's good, because, if he wins a second term, he is probably going to have to bail GM out again. The company is once again losing market share, and it seems unable to develop products that are truly competitive in the U.S. market. Right now, the federal government owns 500,000,000 shares of GM, or about 26% of the company. It would need to get about $53.00/share for these to break even on the bailout, but the stock closed at only $20.21/share on Tuesday. This left the government holding $10.1 billion worth of stock, and sitting on an unr…

But, now, as of 02/23/2012, less than 3 weeks after returning to full-time work after my 11/11/2011 open heart surgery, I find myself ... unemployed. To say I'm stunned/numb is just the tip of the iceberg. I've already started the process of "scaling back" financially (including dropping some sponsorships & donations), have applied for unemployment, & started the process of looking for a new job. The last time this happened (April 2005, due to the Sears/Kmart merger)…

The Sonic RS is $21.8k but red is not my color (although it looks very good in red). Please give opinions if you wish. http--,,--//

Perhaps the greatest (and most dangerous) street race I've ever watched....two British-sounding guys in an '06 Z06 take on a Ford GT on metro Detroit freeways during lunchtime traffic. Speeds up to 160 mph. There are so many times where it could have just ended for one of them....just one little lane change by a passing motorist and it's over. It's at $2.65 as I write this. Frankly, I tend to have a bit more faith in Ford than I do GM, so I was wondering if it can go much lower, and whether it'd be something to play around with.

I've been thinking lately - I can't wait for Ford to fold. The sooner they do, the less likely it is that GM will do the same. The UAW will have to make some kind of concession if Ford folds. Maybe then GM could compete. Would this work? Will it come to this? What do you think?

* Which would you rather own &/or drive: Ford truck or Buick coupe? Seems the Buick has the edge! http://www.oldcarsstronghearts.com/2015/06/11/thursday-survey-21/ With 4 open heart surgeries (November 1977, March 1987, 01/06/2003 & 11/11/2011) under my belt, this (about being strong) is certainly true for me, in many other ways as well. http://www.oldcarsstronghearts.com/2015/06/10/daily-dose-wake-up-wed-21/ Cort www.oldcarsstronghearts.com 1979 & 1989 Caprice Classics | pigValve, paceMaker, cowValve "I hope I'm a little bit stronger" __ KT Oslin __ 'Come Next Monday'

Ford, GM, Mazda recall cars for safety problems Wed Apr 12, 7:16 PM ET Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:F - news), General Motors Corp. (NYSE:GM - news) and Mazda Motor Corp. (7261.T) are recalling almost 35,000 cars for a range of defects, U.S. safety regulators said on Wednesday. Ford is recalling over 19,000 Mustang Cobras from the 2003 and 2004 model years because the accelerator pedal can stick on the floor carpeting in the car, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said. The NHTSA said the accelerator problem could cause crashes when the pedal catches on a cutout area of the floor carpeting during sharp acceleration. Ford will install carpet "shields" to addr…

Yesterday, me and the family went shopping in my dad's big, bright red F250. Not an easy thing to miss, by any means. That didn't stop some dumb broad in a Windstar. Slowing down for traffic stopped at intersection, she must have been blind. As we stop, we feel a jerk and hear a pop. We were rearended. My dad is cursing like a sailor. We pull off, the dumb broad follows suit. My dad gets out to inspect. Well, what do you know... she rammed the hitch. No damage to the truck, but she f@#ked up front bumper. Dumb bitch. Yes, yes... Not really a highlight of the curse, but it was mentionable. Otherwise, winter driving is interesting. The only vehicles you see wrecking a…

So I picked this album up, and I think it's an awesome effort. I suppose I'm a bit biased, because I'm a huge Kelly Hansen fan because of his previous band Hurricane, and his stint in Unruly Child, as well as being involved in a bunch of tribute albums. Jeff Pilson's involvement as bassist, and backing vocals only seals the deal. How about the rest of you? Awesome effort? Or is it nothing without Lou?

I'm thnking of cars that were once ubiquitous on American roads but now are little remembered, let alone seen. Think of this as an older car version of the "cars that have gone missing thread". The cars that have gone missing long enough to be generally forgotten. Chevy Monza Ford Torino Ford LTD VW Thing Have at it!

This guy is my hero. He is absolutely insane. Trying to sell a Senate seat, hustling a children's hospital, comparing himself to Ghandi, the list goes on and on. I applaud the voters of my home state for electing a delusional narcissist governor, it makes for amusing television.

LOS ANGELES - Gerald R. Ford, who picked up the pieces of Richard Nixon’s scandal-shattered White House as the 38th and only unelected president in America’s history, has died, his wife, Betty, said Tuesday. He was 93. “My family joins me in sharing the difficult news that Gerald Ford, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather has passed away at 93 years of age,” Mrs. Ford said in a brief statement issued from her husband’s office in Rancho Mirage. “His life was filled with love of God, his family and his country.” The statement did not say where Ford died or list a cause of death. Ford had battled pneumonia in January 2006 and underwent two heart t…

http://www.fiaformulae.com/en.aspx Is the competition any good? It's basically F1-ish cars but with electric engines. I haven't had the chance to watch any races yet but it does sound interesting. I wonder how the cars compare with F1cars.

I guess I've never really known much about the Formula Firebird and how differentiated it was from a Trans Am. Someone in my hometown has a '92 Formula Firebird that I believe is supposed to be pretty rare. Could someone give me a quick history lesson on what the focus was for a Formula Firebird vs. a Trans Am (performance, suspension, options, etc)? Maybe like how the IROC was geared toward power while the Z/28 was geared toward handling? I'm assuming they were situated below the Trans Am in price and performance, but what was it that made them so special and some like the '92 so collectible? I tried looking up some info but didn't really find much on them (and did…
