"When Toyota decided to move forward with the production of the FJ Cruiser in 2005, it charged the development team with two important missions. The first was to bring young (and dumb?) customers into Toyota showrooms; the second was to reinvigorate the Toyota truck lineup with a vehicle that was fun to drive, stylish and tough (all italics are mine)." First, Ron Paul announces that he will retire from politics, another major war likely looms on the horizon, and now Hostess announces that it is going out of buisness. Yep. That's right. Our collective fat American asses will no longer be able to scarf down the golden sweet goodness of the processed junk food we know and love as the Twinkie. Research has showed me that the last time it was updated was in 1999 (I think) where they converted the original 1967 logo, glossed it over a bit, and slapped it on the letterhead. I think that with the volt coming out in 2010, and the vastly different corporate image GM is after, a new logo is necessary. I made these 2 earlier today. What do you think? This being said, I almost always tip a hair over 15%, usually to make my total an even .00 or .50 dollar credit card figure. Now, at a buffet in Vegas or Reno or Tahoe, I usually tip 10%, since they don't take the order nor bring you food. I figure 10%, in that scenario, is ok. This past weekend, in Vancouver, I had two eye-opening experiences and I tipped LESS. 1) trendy Mexican restaurant in a run-down Bohemian area. The food was overpriced and late, for an almost empty restaurant. In the process, I consumed the salsa and chips. I pointed to the chip bowl and th…

  70. I won't say I never do it. Sometimes my "soft spot" gets affected and I will throw the remaining change or that rare dollar bill into the jar when I go up to the counter at a Starbucks or a pizza place. Tips are for table service. Until the last 5 or 10 years, I rarely saw tip jars at places where you walk up to get your coffee, tea, sandwich or pizza. Now they are everywhere. I don't really dig it and, if you use a credit card, there's that space for a tip that you either fill in or zero out in front of them. Talk about being put on the spot. I will only drop in money 10 % to 20 % of the time. That is if they are genuinely friendly and attentive or if they were…

I'd like to ask you guys if you know of a way we can can get a straight deal from a dealership for our next visit. Is there a way we can get what we want from the start of the deal? Is there any kind of research we can do? If you have a tip, post it here. Thanks guys.

Thanks to Satty's thread about W-bodies, it's allowed me to start a thread on what kind of tires people prefer. I've never really figured out the right way to decide on and purchase new tires. I used Consumer Reports back in '97 and didn't like the tires they recommended!! The Malibu is in need of new rubber, and I'm thinking of going with Goodyear Assurance ComforTred (current tires are factory-installed Bridgestone Insignia SE P215/60R16 94S M+S <--- not great tires IMO). Whenever I've had Goodyear tires on a car, I've always liked the way they've performed. Now I'm actually holding off buying them because I was waiting to see if there would be any good summer in…

I need a DVR...I am not home during the primetime TV hours and would love to still keep up with a few of the shows that are on. Getting a DVR from my cable provider isn't a possibility because that would mean I would have to move up to digital cable. Meaning that I would owe the the cable company about 40 bucks more a month after box rental and all the jazz. Not worth it just for the DVR because I would only watch maybe one or two of the extra channels. My only answers would maybe be moving to DirecTV with a DVR for like 25 bucks more a month (a lot more channels and a little better quality) or I could simply get a TiVo at $13 a month if I commited to a 3 year contra…

To Blow or Not to Blow: Turbocharging vs. Natural Aspiration "Every new BMW on sale in the United States, save for the electric-drive i3, carries at least one turbocharger. Audi and Mercedes-Benz are nearly as turbo-centric. Even stalwarts of high-revving, naturally aspirated engines, such as Ferrari and Honda, are strapping snails to their engines. And on the home front, Ford has been pushing hard on its EcoBoost turbocharged engines for almost a decade now. If turbochargers haven’t won the war against natural aspiration yet, they certainly appear unstoppable in this, their most recent campaign for domination. Increasingly stringent fuel-economy and emissions r…

So, its 12:30am and I'm driving home from the beach. I decide to do something rare, crazy, and irrational, a thing the majority of drivers here don't do - I stop at a crosswalk. I wonder why the couple walk so slowly across while starting behind me under I feel a *THUNK!* And that's what it feels to have a 2006 Solara hit you. Damage is minimal though, as you can see. Thing is the car was a demo and the guy driving works at a Toyota dealership in the paint/body shop. He was very kind, very nice, and very apologetic. He gave me everything - license, reg, insurance - and asked if I could go through him instead of calling the police. I get his insurance info just in cas…

I'm trying to make up my mind whether this 1966 Chevrolet 3/4 ton would be a good buy or not. The facts: 1966 Chevrolet 3/4 ton. $1,000 250 inline six 4-speed. Eaton rear axle. The Good: Body is solid other than small holes in quarter panel and rocker. Drivetrain is known for dead reliability. Close by. Easy to fix. I've got all the time in the world to work on it. Checked the body with a magnet and no bondo. Frame is solid. The Bad: Hasn't run in 3 years and I'm not spending $1,000 and a vehicle that doesn't run. Wood bed needs replacing. Engine and clutch work are not my strong points. I'd have to knock over and rebuild a barn so I'd have a spot to pu…

Linkity LONDON (AFP) - Troubled soul singer Amy Winehouse kicked off her 17-date tour with a shambolic performance that saw fuming fans booing and marching out, reports said Thursday. The concert at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, was a chance for the 24-year-old to get back to singing and put her woes behind her. Winehouse has had "health issues" -- widely reported to be drug and alcohol abuse -- and her party-loving husband Blake Fielder-Civil is being held on grievous bodily harm and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice charges. But Wednesday's gig at the NIA, which can hold up to 13,000 people, was slammed by angry fans as a "disgrace" after she…

I'd like to apologize for my post the other day to you...I re-read it and it definitely came off harsher than I had remembered writing it. I also apologize for taking it too personal; that was unacceptable and out of line. I do stand by what I said regarding the anti-American comments (yes, you make quite a few of them) because that's been building for a while, yet I still should have chosen my words a bit more carefully.

So, while looking for crossover leases for my boss, and researching dealer incentives on Edmunds, I decided to see what the SRX had to offer (its probably more than what he wants to spend but I thought maybe there were some good leases...). Anyways, right now there's a $2024 GM to dealer incentive for premium lux V6 models, $900 GM to dealer for AWD on V6 models, and $900 GM to dealer for the rear seat. Before today when the $3000 GM to customer incentive came out, there was also a $2000 GM to dealer incentive for any model SRX (at least V6). There's an SRX that has these options plus the 18" wheel and tire package and white diamond paint at my local dealership right now …
