Prius can't pass Georgia emissions test Eco-conscious drivers in Georgia are finding out that the grass isn't necessarily greener on their side of the fence. 2007 is the first year drivers of the 2004 Prius are required to get their cars tested for emissions. You'd think the clean-running hybrid would have no problems breezing through the exam. But, as CNN reports, no matter how many times Georgia drivers try to test one, they all fail. Huh? Well, sorta. It's more like the Prius refuses to take the test. When the Prius is set to idle at 2,500 rpm on the tester, it does what it's supposed to do. It shuts off the engine to save fuel. Georgia's pre-hybrid equipment issues …

The real future of Scion? I see the whole thing coming apart at the seams, seriously. There just doesn't seem to be much real interest in the new xB or the xD, and the TC is fading rapidly in sales. What do you all seriously see happening here? Chris

Even More FT-86 News: Leaked Spec Sheet William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com October 31, 2011 Related: Are You The Final Toyota FT-86? Maybe We're beginning to get a better picture of what the Toyota FT-86 (Scion FR-S for the US) will bring us once production begins. Some scans of what is purported to be the FT-86's training manual has been put on the FT86Club.com forum. If the translations are done correctly, the FT-86 will have a 2.0L flat-four producing 197 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 150 pound-feet of torque at 6,600 rpm. That might not sound like a lot, but if early reports of the handling come true, the engine should be ab…

A few weeks back we reported that the Toyota Yaris hatchback that we all knew and ...er... loved... would be ending production but we also found out that there was a possibility that the model name would continue in the form of a rebadged Mazda 2 hatchback like the Yaris Sedan. Yesterday, those suspicions were confirmed. Toyota released details ahead of the New York International Auto Show of the coming 2020 Toyota Yaris Hatchback. Like the sedan, it is based on the Mazda 2 but with a Toyota front clip and badging. Surprisingly, it is larger than the old model. Wheelbase is up by 2.4 inches over the outgoing model and features a trunk area with almost 16 cubic f…

I'm sure you guys have seen the recent Toyota Tundra commercial. Basically it says it's like the most reliable truck on the road because it's been "factory tested" Kinda funny that they can't back that up with real world experience like the other makers can (excluding Nissan).

From Auto Extremist Example # 1: Example # 2: It's simply arrogance and ill will. They know Americans are either too dumb or don't care enough to notice and I think they get a laugh out of doing things like this... THIS is why I hate the asian companies so much. They come here, destroy our industry and subsequently hundreds of years of history and identity (with the help of the minions they've recruited in this country) and thinks it's all a big joke because "they own us" It's all about attitude and it's been going down this way for years, yet apparently everyone is too blind to see it.

Lexus' LF-A Spied NSX? What NSX? Link to Original Article @ AutoWeek | Published 06/20/07, 7:59 am et Lexus will reveal the production LF-A supercar either at Frankfurt in September or on its home field at Tokyo in October. This prototype, spied turning test laps at the Nürburgring, is likely powered by a 5.0-liter, 500-hp V10, similar to what’s in the next-generation NSX that the competition from Acura is finalizing for a Tokyo debut. While the LF-A’s debut is up in the air, it’s clear the $100,000-plus flagship sports car is well on its way to going on sale in late 2008 as a 2009 model. Styling closely follows that of the concept design shown at both the 2005 and …

Recall: 30K Scion tCs for Side Airbag Problem Toyota Motor Corp. said Tuesday it was recalling about 30,000 Scion tC sports coupes over concerns that the side air bags could inadvertently deploy if the door is slammed forcefully. The recall affects about 20 percent of the tCs produced during the 2005 and 2006 model years, Toyota said. The vehicle is only sold in the United States. The automaker said seat-mounted side air bags and side curtain air bags could deploy if the door on that side of the vehicle is closed forcefully while the ignition is on or within 90 seconds of when the ignition is turned off. SAN DIEGO — Just when you thought luxury SUVs couldn't get any bigger, Lexus has increased the length of the redesigned LX 570 by 4 inches and widened it by more than an inch. Evidently, when you buy a luxury SUV that tops $80,000 fully optioned, added size and weight don't matter. It helps that the LX 570, despite the 405 pounds of added bulk and 115 more horsepower under the hood, gets the same claimed fuel economy as the LX 470 it replaces: 12 mpg in city driving and 18 mpg on the highway. The SUV goes on sale this month. The basics: It's big — 196.5 inches long — though still 6 inches shorter than a Cadillac Escalade. The LX 570 shares many of its underpinning…

A CVT is available for an additional $1,100. This is what you get on either trim: SE: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure warning; 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay compatibility, and 16-inch wheels. For something a bit surprising. This morning, Toyota has announced that the Scion brand will be shuttered and the current lineup will transition over to the Toyota brand for the 2017 model year. News of this was first reported by CarBuzzard where a meeting was held yesterday with Scion employees notified of the decision. “This isn’t a step backward for Scion; it’s a leap forward for Toyota. Scion has allowed us to fast track ideas that would have been challenging to test through the Toyota network,” said Jim Lentz, CEO of Toyota Motor North America and the founding vice president of Scion in a statement. Scion was first introduced back in 2002 as a brand that …

While driving back from one of my friends in Atlanta I saw a Turdra for sale at a CHEVY dealership. Now it would not have caught my eyes if it was the older one, but it was the 2007! That's right, the "used" BIG 2007 Turd was on sale at a Chevy dealership . Wonder which moron bought it and decided to get rid of it in less than a quarter year. If GA has taxes like FL does, that dude spent 4,000k only on taxes in less than 3 months, provided he bought a similarly equipped Silverado, wow what an investment. I am going to check and see if Autotrader has a listing for this Turd. That was priceless.

note: I am only posting this because of the outlandish question at the beginning of the article and as another example of the continuing media obsession with toyota. business week from the article...... "Now, I may receive some heat and email about this, but after almost half a century in the U.S., multi-billions of dollars invested in every state in the union, millions of very satisfied customers, seven factories, thousands of employees, isn't it time to stop calling Toyota an import brand? It may have come from Japan, but it is now an American brand that's almost iconic."

Toyota officials under investigation for recall negligence The Associated Press is reporting that three Toyota officials are under criminal investigation for allegedly avoiding a recall for eight years, during which time the defective part in question may have caused an accident. The story goes like this. On August 12, 2004, five people were injured in a head-on crash in Japan that was caused when the steering of a 1993 Toyota Hilux Surf failed. Toyota then carried out a small recall in October of 2004 for 330,000 Hilux Surf SUVs built between 1988 and 1996 for a part used in the steering system that could fail. The Hilux Surf that caused the accident was built in 1993.…

The other night, I was in Dubois and stopped at Stoltz Toyota/Scion. They had a row of 4 or 5 new Highlanders on the lot. I figured I'd check them out and take some pictures. To my luck, they left one of them unlocked. I was able to fully check everything out besides actually driving it. Thus, I give you my attempt at a half-assed review. Exterior First, I must say it wasn't as bad in person as it originally looked in pictures. While completely lacking in personality, it doesn't induce vomiting, require blindness, or inspire death wishes as select other Toyotas may. It's different enough to be ever so slightly unique, yet bland enough to keep it from straying…

Last August, we reported on a BMW document that revealed the next-generation Z4 and all-new Toyota Supra would have the choice of a 2.0L turbo-four and twin-turbo 3.0L inline-six. Now, a new document from German transmission maker ZF seems to confirm this. The document in question is a "transmission catalogue" that lists the various implementations of the eight-speed ZF 8HP. For the Supra, it has two BMW engines listed - the 2.0L turbo-four with 265 horsepower and 3.0L twin-turbo inline-six with 335 horsepower. The Z4 will get the same engines, but will offer a more potent inline-six with 375 horsepower. Testsuya Tada, the chief engineer on the Supra did confirm…

So I had to go to a group eligibility review for my UI benefits yesterday along with 6 other people. During the class, someone was asking about temp work and how it affected drawing unemployment etc. To make a long story short, an older lady behind me (probably in her late 50s) was talking about people she knew that worked temp work for Toyota for up to 2-3 years and then being told that there were not being hired. The lady over the class said that its becoming a problem with the Georgetown plant, Toyota will hire a load of temp workers, telling them that they may get hired after the temp work is done, but really they just keep recycling temp workers. Toyota appears to be building out their sports car lineup with the 86 and the rumored Supra coupe. There is now talk of third sports that would mark the return of the 'Three Brothers'; MR2, Celica, and Supra. Evo reports that Tetsuya Tada, chief engineer of the Toyota 86 and head of Gazoo Racing revealed that a spiritual successor to the MR2 is in the works. The successor would act as the starting point for the 'three brothers,' with the 86 serving as the successor to the Celica and the Supra as the top dog. Tada said the company hopes to have the trio in production together, "as soon as possible." Details are slim, but Evo expects the model to be smaller and li…

Mark Rechtin | | Automotive News / October 9, 2006 - 1:00 am LOS ANGELES -- Toyota's first-generation Sequoia was dinged for being smaller than other large SUVs. Now some Toyota executives fear that a much bigger Sequoia, which arrives next fall, swung too far the other way. Sales of big SUVs are shrinking, and for more reasons than expensive gasoline. The bigger-is-better fad has passed, executives say. And the bigger Sequoia may arrive just as the party lets out. "I worry about the Sequoia being too big and not having enough fuel economy, more than I do with the (redesigned) Tundra," said Don Esmond, senior vice president of automotive operations at Toyota Motor Sale…

Japan scolds Toyota on recall practices Yuri Kageyama / Associated Press TOKYO -- In a rare public scolding of Japan's biggest company, the government reprimanded Toyota Friday and called for improved recall practices amid a criminal investigation into a 2004 accident. The transportation ministry issued a "guidance" order requiring the automaker to report to the ministry by Aug. 4 steps it is taking to better monitor reports of defects with its cars and speed up communication within the company about possible problems, a ministry official said on customary condition of anonymity. The ministry did not fine Toyota or find it guilty of breaking the law. But public prose…

To say we were slightly disappointed to find out that the U.S.-Spec Toyota C-HR would only come with a 2.0L four-cylinder producing 144 horsepower would be an understatement. The European-spec C-HR has the choice of either a turbocharged 1.2L four or a hybrid, but neither of these powertrains will be showing up in the U.S. Car and Driver spoke with the C-HR's chief engineer, Hiroyuki Koba to find out why. Koba didn't say why the turbocharged 1.2L would not come to the U.S., but we're guessing Toyota didn't want to put the effort in getting this engine certified for the U.S. Also, performance numbers between the 2.0L and turbo 1.2L are similar (11 seconds for the 2.0 …

We know that Lexus is planning to produce a production version of the LF-LC coupe concept shown a few years ago, but details about it have been somewhat scarce. However, Automobile has some tantalizing details about it. First up, the coupe will wear the SC nameplate. This name was last seen on a hardtop convertible in 2010. The SC will use the underpinnings of the next-generation LS and feature 3 engine choices: a high-output version of the 5.0L V8, a hybrid powertrain, and a twin-turbocharged V8 with close to 600 horsepower. We could be seeing the SC next year as a 2017 model. Source: Automobile View full article

Lexus’ HS250h hasn’t been meeting expectations since being introduced back in 2009. Through 2011, Lexus has only sold 2,383 HS250hs, a drop of 72.8% from last year. Because of this, Lexus is showing the HS250h the door and is replacing it with another model. Ward’s Auto is reporting the new model will be positioned towards the younger crowd and not towards people moving on up from a Toyota Prius. Also, the new model will be priced much lower than the HS250h which has a base price around $37,030 ($3,495 more than a base Lexus IS.) Source: Ward’s Auto (Subscription Required) View full article

Toyota lags General Motors in second-quarter sales Associated Press | Link to Original Article @ Detroit News TOKYO -- Toyota slipped behind General Motors in global sales in the second quarter but retained its lead for the first half of the year, numbers showed today, as the two companies jostle for the title of world's biggest automaker. The figures -- and sales growth rates -- indicate that Toyota could overtake GM as the No. 1 automaker, a title the U.S. giant has held for 76 years. Typically, rankings are determined by full-year production figures, not sales, so that distinction will have to wait until data is tallied for the entire year. Toyota Motor Corp. said…

TOKYO — Toyota Motor Corp. , the world's second-largest auto maker, said on Tuesday it would recall a total of about 1 million vehicles globally to replace faulty intermediate shafts and sliding yokes. In a filing with Japan's Transport Ministry, the company said it would recall a total of 565,756 vehicles in Japan, including Wish, Isis, Prius and other cars built between September 2002 and November 2005. A Toyota spokesman said the recall would also cover about 400,000 units overseas. The company said it had received no reports of accidents from the defects. Toyota as a matter of policy does not disclose the cost of recalls. Toyota Recalls 1 Million Vehicles World…

Toyota's Tundra Tactics Here's the latest on Toyota's plans to challenge Detroit's dominance of the full-size pickup market with an all-new Tundra. The last of the 2006 Tundra pickups will be built in Princeton, Ind., later this month. That will mark the end of the design that was dismissed by true truckers. The bigger 2007 version, which aims to be a more legitimate challenger to the F-150, Silverado/Sierra and Ram, is set to start shipping to dealers around Feb. 12, which coincidentally is Lincoln's birthday (the 16th president, not the American luxury brand). The biggest Tundra, the CrewMax that will be shown at the Detroit auto show in January, isn't expected at …

full article here Scion is bringing out a new "tuner model" for the tc. It will cost $1400 less than the normal model. It will feature steel wheels, the sunroof won't open, exterior colors will be limited to 4, cheap steering wheel and interior, etc. It is supposed to appeal to kids who seriously want to coustomize them. Obviously it will also appeal to cheap skates like me. Scion doesn't want that to happen. Perhaps I should buy one, get some plaid bermuda shorts, black support socks, and sandals. At 60 years old, 300 pounds and no hair, I will single handidly kill their coolness.

Tokyo — TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announced today the nationwide launch in Japan of the completely redesigned Premio through "Toyopet" dealers, and completely redesigned Allion through "Toyota" dealers. The first-generation Premio and Allion, launched in December 2001, were "five number" sedans that appealed to customers with their styling that evoked class-surpassing quality, roomy interior, user-friendliness and outstanding driving performance. The redesigned, second generation models unveiled today were designed to further enhance the appeal of these products, to the extent that they become all that a "five-number" sedan can possibly be. … http://www.toyota.co.…

Toyota and Subaru have been quiet on whether or not there would be a second-generation to the 86/BRZ coupe. But Toyota has broken the silence, telling Autocar there would be a second-generation model. “The GT86 will carry on. The car serves a big purpose. We are not getting out of that business. Sporty cars go through their phases. It’s our intention to continue with that car,” said Toyota Europe boss Karl Schlicht. Like the current model, it is expected that Toyota and Subaru will once again team up on developing the next-generation model. Schlicht did admit that there is no firm confirmation of Subaru coming back to this partnership. “Will it be with Sub…

Ford's Not the Only One with Engine Supply Issues... Toyota Motor Corp. has a simple math problem. It is preparing to build about 2.2 million cars and light trucks a year in North America by 2010. But it only has the capacity to produce 1.45 million engines annually, a shortfall of more than 700,000 engines. So it was no secret that Toyota was looking for a site to build a North American engine and transmission plant. Now sources inside and outside the company say Toyota has scrapped that plan in favor of a wave of expansions at one or more of its existing engine plants. Autoweek

It has been quiet at Nissan and Toyota since General Motors introduced the new Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. But that appears to changing very soon at Toyota. Automotive News has learned that the company is planning to show off the next-generation Tacoma at the Detroit Auto Show next month. Bill Fay, Toyota's general manager says with the recent introduction of GM's new midsize trucks, it will spur interest and demand in the class. “With the new entries coming in, the market should expand,” said Fay. Despite being one of the oldest models in the class, the Tacoma is still a strong seller. Through November, the company moved 140,747 Tacomas, more than 66 percent of …

Toyota is considering trimming production at its new pickup truck assembly plant in Texas, the Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun reported. TOKYO, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Toyota Motor Corp. has developed its third-generation hybrid-system engine, combining gasoline and electric power for a more eco-friendly engine. The smaller engine, which can reduce fuel costs and cut production expenses, will be put into practical use in 2008, the Asahi Shimbun reported Wednesday. The new engine can be installed on most of the automaker's midsize or larger models. Toyota will produce key parts of the new engine in the United States to expand the use of the technology around the world. Toyota installed the first generation hybrid engine in its Prius model in 1997, and the second generation engine, which generated 1.5 t…

Please, it is now time for all good people to stop watching NASCAR. Toyota knows exactly what it is doing and many people have sold their souls for a few bucks. Toyota just as American as Chevy, Ford http://www.nascar.com/2007/news/headlines/...yota/index.html And this "Toyota is American" spin will be spewed out every two minutes during TV NACASR broadcasts. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 3, 2013 Ten years ago, Toyota introduced a new brand that promised young buyers fun and funky vehicles. That brand was Scion. Today, Scion is in a bit of a struggle. Originally conceived as a brand for young buyers, Scion has struggled to keep them in the fold. According to The Detroit News, 15 percent of Scion customers are under age 35. Meanwhile, 14 percent of Scion customers “We’re still a good 15 years or more below the average industry age,” said Scion chief Doug Murtha. While that is true, that number has been shrinking. In 2008, more than 20 percent of Scion customers were under 35 and less than 8 percen…

Are You The Final Toyota FT-86? Maybe William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com October 27, 2011 Today, pictures of what could be a final version of the Toyota FT-86 were released. The pictures are from a leaked Modellista brochure, which is a in-house tuning arm of Toyota. The car shown looks very close to first FT-86 concept with some added bits from Modellista, including an aero kit and several other accessories. Also, the picture of interior closely matches spy shots of camouflaged FT-86s. We'll find out if this is production version of the FT-86 next month at the Tokyo Motor Show. Source: 7Tune, FT86 Club

We reported back in April that the Toyota Tundra and Toyota Tacoma would be consolidated to a single modular platform for their respective next generations. Now Toyota is making a $391 million dollar investment into its San Antonio production line to help smooth the way. The investment is not expected to create any new permanent jobs. The new platform, internally called F1, will first appear in the next generation Tundra expected in 2021 and eventually spread to all of Toyota's pickups worldwide. Tacoma will move to the F1 platform in 2023 or 2024. The new platform will be capable of electrification. One of the engines rumored for the Tundra is a Twin-Turbo V6 Hyb…

So we went to the annual Topsfield Fair in MA today, which is sponsored by Toyota. I saw a Yaris and an FJ Cruiser, but what really cought my eye was a Tundra prototype. I have to admit, in person it looks much better and less ungainly than in any of the photis. I still think the headlights seem a bit small for the truck, but oh well. So I start asking the Toyota Representative about the truck. I ask if he knows how much HP the 5.7 liter V8 has. He says they haven't released official numbers yet, but in a comarison test with the Silverado, F-150, an Ram 1500 Laramie with a "5.6 liter Hemi" it beat them "by like 8 cars spaces" to 60 mph. I had to point out that the Hemi w…

Toyota to pay owners for engine damages Compensation for 3.5 million '97-'02 Lexus, Toyota vehicles may cost automaker billions. Christine Tierney Link to Original Article @ DetNews Toyota Motor Corp. has agreed to compensate owners of Lexus and Toyota vehicles that suffered engine damage due to a buildup of thickened oil, or sludge, in a settlement approved this week by a Louisiana state court. The agreement covers 3.5 million 1997-2002 model-year vehicles, although it is not known how many were damaged by sludge. Toyota agreed to settle the 2001 class-action suit last fall, and says the terms mirror a program the automaker put in place in 2002 to reimburse custome…

Prius Production Increase Story. By MarketWatch LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Toyota Motor Corp. Toyota has decided to boost production of its Prius hybrid from an initial plan of 42,000 to 43,000 units per month to around 50,000 units, Kyodo News reported Wednesday, citing company officials. To meet the increase, the company will ask employees at two factories producing the Prius -- one in the city of Toyota and another run by an affiliated parts maker in the city of Kariya -- to work overtime, the report said. Toyota: Moving Forward Slower Remember how Toyota said they are delaying the launch of the Tundra amid quality concerns? Well, that ain't the only one they're going to take their time with. The next Sienna, Solara and Avalon are models that could be subject to longer development time in order for Toyota to ensure they get it right the first time. The extra development time could delay the launches of these products by two to three years. Do you think Toyota decided to take heed of my words? (See "Toyota: Moving Forward...Entirely Too Fast" for elaboration.) Read "Toyota may delay launch of new models" @ Yahoo

Toyota is reading to launch their high-performance sub-brand GAZOO Racing (GR) with the upcoming Toyota Supra - debuting next week at the Detroit Auto Show. But what comes next? "We have lots of requests from different countries, so it's really, really challenging to decide on the order [of performance models]," said Tetsuya Tada, chief engineer of the Toyota 86 and Supra. "It's not just Hyundai. Other car brands are doing this too, so we are researching this and we have to create the brand strategy." According to Carsales, Australian executives are pushing hard for a GR version of the Corolla Hatchback to bring the fight to the Hyundai i30N hatchback. No m…

Here's a quiz: a carmaker last month recalled 1 million vehicles worldwide. In 2005 it recalled 2.2 million vehicles in the U.S., 10% of its total number of cars on the road here and twice the number it recalled the year before. Who is this bumbling manufacturer? No, not General Motors (nyse: GM - news - people ), but Toyota (nyse: TM - news - people ), whose vehicles jump off the lot because consumers swear by their quality. Lexus IS-F racer actually a 2004 Opel Vectra DTM car? Posted Jan 21st 2008 4:57PM by Jonathon Ramsey Remember that luscious Lexus IS-F racer study that received its fair share of unrequited attention the Tokyo Auto Salon? According to AutoBild, it turns out the car isn't an IS-F racer at all -- well, at least not beyond the hood and fact that it has four doors. The German paper reports that the car is actually a Lexus reskin of a 2004 Opel Vectra DTM racer (above, top). Even the engine is from the Opel DTM car, and not a Toyota V8. This could explain why no one at the Lexus stand at the salon would say a word about the car. So Lexus might get away with never clai…

It seems America isn't the only place that is interested in the Toyota Tundra. CarAdvice.com.au reports there is “enormous demand” for the Tundra in Australia. Speaking with Tony Cramb, Toyota AU's executive director of sales and marketing said there was room for a larger truck. But there are two key items withholding the Tundra from the Australian marketplace. “We have an enormous demand for a Tundra here in Australia, there’s no doubt if we could get a diesel Tundra, then I think we’d sell 100 a month. But regrettably because it’s manufactured in the States, it’s unlikely to happen that way," said Cramb “… We’ve had strong requests at dealer meetings to get the …
