So the Challenger can run on either 87 or 89 octane unleaded fuel and today I put about a quarter tank in it to see how far it would take me. Mixed mpg is rated at 20, but what I discovered was far more startling. The Chally only made that quarter tank last 30 miles using the Eco light in the trip odometer. A bit disappointed, I spent $50 bucks on a full tank of 89 octane gas and that just about tripled my mileage. After driving 40 miles the gauge hasn't really moved. The extra 11 cents per gallon (87 is $3.79 and 89 was only $3.90) might be worth it. But what I think is interesting is that I can remember 87 octane being of a much better quality than it is now, even at…

I'm home and have the time right now, so I thought I'd finally share this since it's still effecting me. On my way home from Detroit last Thursday after my English Placement Exam, I got to Chelsea on I-94 when my car died. Now, it wouldn't be quite so bad if this was the first time that it had happened, but it was about the fifth time that it's done it to me, and what pissed me off above everything else is that what the dealership thought the problem was turned out not the be the problem at all. I maintain that it's the fuel pump. On a long drive (I got to Detroit fine) it just eventually fizzles out on the Interstate. It gives a hiccup, and then the car just starts…

The road trip to Tulsa set me back in terms of the amount of money I had, a which in tern made my loan payment for last month lat (school loans). This day started off quite good, with Sixty8 finally being able o drop off the LeSabre for safe keeping, and us being able to kill the hornet's nest in the Caravan's hatch (starter fluid, as I have learned, is awesome at killing the bastards). We were even able to move it up the driveway so another car could finally fit behind it. He also got a tour of the many, many Mopar parts that have collected in the garage, as well as being able to see the `Cuda's in the flesh. All was going well... I had to get money from working before…

Weight gain means lower gas mileage: U.S. study Associated Press CHICAGO -- Want to spend less at the pump? Lose some weight. That's the implication of a new study that says Americans are burning nearly 1 billion more gallons of gasoline each year than they did in 1960 because of their expanding waistlines. Simply put, more weight in the car means lower gas mileage. Using recent gas prices of $2.20 a gallon, that translates to about $2.2 billion more spent on gas each year. "The bottom line is that our hunger for food and our hunger for oil are not independent. There is a relationship between the two," said University of Illinois researcher Sheldon Jacobson, a study c…

Replacing his 91 Caprice Classic, my dad bought this car used in 96 with only 30,000 on the clock. He needed something with a smooth ride since for his career (rick management) he travels quite a bit to medical facilities across the state. Both myself and my brother started learning to drive on this car. Over the years, very few mechanical problems have arose so when it was time to buy another car for my brother, they bought a 92 and shortly after my mom's sister had bought a 93. Well, now the time has come that now some mechanical issues are coming up and my parents have probably invested a few thousand into the car to keep it running. At the moment, it leaks gas, oil, h…

OK, I didn't know this, but here's a tip - if you're renting a car, decline CDW (collision damage waver) insurance. Instead, look at your credit card's terms and conditions. It's very likely that rental insurance is included in that. For an eight-day one-way rental in Spain, my price went from €460 to €280. I assumed my normal auto insurance wouldn't cover me outside the US, but thankfully I happened to glance at the benefits pamphlet of my newly issued card, which normally I would have thrown away. Now it's $50/day; you can't even get that price in the US (as an 18-20 year old). Reserved a CWMR (C-segment, wagon, manual, air conditioning) diesel from Sixt, and presum…

The Hyundai Accent is rebadged in the Mexican market as the Dodge Attitude. The current generation and last generation were both rebadged. The older generation at least switched the Hyundai logos for some odd oval ones with the Dodge logo in the center. The new generation just leaves the Hyundai badges in place (both front and back!)... very confusing.

I hate this condition but I run into it a lot, juggling a full time job and taking 2 tough classes at night. Usually, one of the two parts of my life slides a little bit and then I play catch up. I can pull a "marathon" and get it done, usually with decent results. The problem is that I almost always get sick right after making a big deadline or the end of the semester as all of the pressure lifts all at once.

Next-generation iPod Shuffle: 1 Gb (~240 songs), 8 hours battery. 1.6x1.1x0.46 inches, 0.55 ounces. CAD$90 / US$80. This thing is crazy small. I saw the pictures when I ordered it, but I still can't believe it now that it's here. It's got a clip on the back to clip in into your clothes, etc... I clip it into my work ID badge and hardly notice it's there. One thing I can't believe - the docking station loads all the data and charges the battery through the headphone jack! Oh, and just to be a smartass I ordered it with a message written on the back: "White headphones make you cool."

So I drag my sorry butt out of bed at about 4:30 this morning so I have time to get ready to go downtown for the invitation only GM get-together at the Philadelphia Auto Show. It takes quite a while to deal with the dogs in the morning so I wanted to get an early start as we had to be at the show at 7:00A.M. First order of business is to let Zora out. While he is outside I start to do my normal morning ritual which includes feeding Arkus. I want to get this done before I hop in the shower. This bill was passed a couple weeks ago by President Bush without Congressional approval or oversight; mainstream news has not covered it, in fact most don't even know about it (I found out via a skyscraper forum). Essentially, this bill allows for the "continuity" of America in the event of a catastrophic disaster that would give extraordinary powers to the executive branch, throwing the system of checks and balances out the window. A catastrophic disaster could be another Katrina, 9/11, major earthquake in California, economic depression...you name it. Not only does the executive branch gain more power, but the president can take control of "private sector owners and…

Very lucky to visit the Pima Air and Space Museum whose inventory includes a VC-137 like those used by Kennedy as well as Eisenhower's Constellation and Truman's DC-4. Not to mention a Convair B-36 Peacemaker. The Constellation has to be my all-time favorite aircraft so it was nice to finally see one in person. Also paid a visit to the Barry Goldwater memorial park and took in a Suns game.

So I was walking back to my car from a sports bar last night after watching the Patriots lay an egg, and a car pulled over in front of me with something truly bizarre: two sets of license plates. It was a Crown Victoria, but as far as I could tell it wasn't a cop. It was sporting perfectly regular Virginia and DC license plates (ie, not official plates or anything) mounted right next to each other on the front bumper, and on the back one plate was in the regular holder and the other was on the bumper. Is this guy just a thief? Under what circumstances would this be allowed?

If you like the Red Hot Chili Peppers (or alternative in general), you're going to love this album. I've had it for all of two hours and it's already a candidate for album of the year (for me, at least)! I suggest purchasing form the iTunes Music Store, as you get a video on the making of the video for "Dani California," a 17-page digital booklet, and an hour-long audio commentary. (Ultimate-Guitar.com said you can get a special edition with these bonuses plus some other toys for US$130. Yeah, I'm gonna have to stick with just paying $19.90.) So anyways I got the job detailing cars and started last Friday. It was mostly a learning experience, but basically my job conists of inspecting the new cars that just came off the car hauler to make sure they don't have any damage, finding new cars on the lot that need to be washed and washing them, waxing/cleaning the inside of people's cars who have made appointments for detailing jobs, and checking the "spindle" to see if any salespeople have requests for cars to be washed if they have customers coming to look at a certian vehicle. I also dust off the cars in the showroom every morning. It's pretty easy and the time goes by a lot faster than I thought it would, and…

From Bill Vance of Canadian Driver: July 18, 2007 Motoring Memories: Hardtop convertibles Story and photo by Bill Vance Although true hardtop convertibles are becoming popular now, there were a few earlier attempts that weren't so successful. In the beginning, virtually all cars were convertibles, most descended from open carriages and buggies. Rudimentary canvas tops were normal as carmakers were more concerned with mechanical reliability than passenger protection - and automobiles were rarely operated in the winter anyway. As reliability improved and cars were used year-round there was increased interest in weather protection. Enclosed cars gradually ev…

I was thinking, what if someone made a rim that had springs inside? So when you hit a bump, the actual wheel could compress a bit to absorb the bump.

We took one of these Lifang scooters as a down payment on a JGC and damn if it isn't kick-ass... The most appealing aspect beyond mere kick-assery is the economy. It was 4/5 empty yesterday, I filled it up for $2.15, drove about 35 miles around downtown St. Petersburg and then topped it off for $.75.

1,000TH POST!!! Never thought I'd reach this point. So, here's to 1,000 posts of pure crap, pure insight, inverse opinions, failed attempts at scarcasm, sucessful attempts at scarcasm, failed attempts to poke fun at other members and sucessful ones to boot. Here's to posts about music, cars, and bashing Buickman. And I couldn't have done it without you all. (And Charger4U's Word Association threads. )

All right, ladies, gents, I don't know how many of you have been or are in the Bowling Green, KY area, but I took a little side trip up there today whilst the rest of the family was enjoying our annual Family Reunion in Portland, TN. I've got some pictures from the NCM, just thought I'd like to share. The Year Is: 1991 The year is 1991. Your son has just turned 16 and the two of you have just finished a father son project in time for him to drive to school for the first time. Things are going well until you get a call from the principal that your son has been a tad irresponsible in the school parking lot with his new found freedom/ride. You decide that while he pays off the damages, a minivan would be more his speed. The only question is, which one? 1991 Toyota Previa 1991 Pontiac Trans Sport 1991 Plymouth Voyager 1991 Plymouth Colt Vista 1991 Oldsmobile Silhouette 1991 Mitsubishi Expo 1991 Mazda MPV 1991 GMC Safari 1991 Ford Aerostar …

We've all seen (or owned) an old, seemingly worn out car that still runs despite looking like it was parked mistakenly inside a Demo Derby ring. What do you call these old girls? Here's a few to get you started: jalopy crate p.o.s. hoopty wreck any other poetic names for these hangers-on?

I've said every so often that I love the Pontiac GTO; although I actually fell in love with the Monaro first, because I was in OZ when I first laid eyes upon it, and was then lucky enough to take one for a (slightly illegal) spin. Now, I should have the means to pick one up used, especially with Canada's currency parity with the US Dollar. However, my problem is, is that I have learned that for whatever reason, the Government won't allow people to import the GTO into my country. So before I give the agency responsible for the regulations a call, I was wondering if anyone knows why the GTO isn't allowed into Canada, or even better, if anyone knows some way that will le…

I'd love to see someone make a retro cell phone. I want to be able to pull my sim card out of my Blackjack and put it into a modern Motorola brick phone. Just for nostalgia sake, I'd also like to see Nokia re-introduce the 5165, those were fantastic. Green screens and button lights, those awesome faceplates that could be switched quickly and cheaply, they were just awesome! Holy crap! My prayers = answered

I've got a gig doing semi-full time work at the local Sign*A*Rama. First official day was yesterday. We're laying out the vinyl for a 15 foot wide sign for a Vietnamese restaurant. Funny, the place is called "Pho' 88 Vietnamese Cusine" (I guess 88 is a lucky number in Vietnam) anyway we're listening to Rock 101 and G&R comes on... "Sweet Child" which is my all time favorite BTW.... anyway I say under my breath something like "sweet it's Guns & Roses" Here's the funny part, the asian guy who works with me is amazed that I LIKE G&R so I'm like yeah... who didn't like G&R in the late 80s early 90s??? I still love G&R. So his next questio…

Just curious what people are planning to give or do for their dad's on Father's Day. Or what you're hoping to get or do on Father's Day with your family.
