Between the death of a beloved/valued member on one of my heart boards and a phone call from a friend who I haven't heard from in a long time because he is no longer on any message board, it has been quite an interesting week. These instances reminded me of several members from all of the different boards who either are truly no longer with us, or just have "fallen off the face of the earth" due to not posting or visiting the forums anymore.... When I notice people haven't posted in a while, I'll wonder what happened to 'em and hope/pray that all is well. Heh ... given a few other things going on now and over the course of the last month or so, I've thought about takin…

As I browsed the various automotive news websites for my daily virtual reading, something hit me. It was a bit of deja-vu from looking over an image. I'm not certain, but it may have been an image of the Subaru WRX STi from the numerous first tests everyone published. Why it hit me now, I haven't the slightest clue. I started digging to find the source. Soon enough, I found what brought on this repetitive phenomenom. What started out as a couple vehicles here and there soon morphed into many. In fact, by the end, I was able to find hints of this design feature in nearly every manufacturer's lineup. All the big automotive names... like GM, Ford, Volkswagen, BMW, Toyota, Ho…

I was in Northern Calif. over the past weekend. I was in San Francisco one day. It is truly a beautiful city, if not one of the most beautiful in the world. One day and I start to feel claustrophobic and, after being in Europe, it's less compact than those cities, with the ability to pull over to a meter or parking spot being quite common, other than in the Financial District or by Fisherman's Wharf. I think I would tolerate the suburbs (notably Walnut Creek) better. Still expensive, the prices have come down some as it had become truly absurd and stuff wasn't selling that easily. Berkeley absolutely makes my hair stand on its ends. Any liberal college town full of …

Weak dollar and decline in oil inventories spark buying of oil futures NEW YORK - Crude oil prices surged further into record terrain Thursday, breaching $83 a barrel as the weak dollar and last week's decline in U.S. oil inventories spurred buying of futures. Gasoline futures jumped as well. Oil prices have risen to records in seven straight sessions on the New York Mercantile Exchange on a mix of concerns about falling supplies and tight demand. But many analysts also blame an influx of speculative "nontraditional" capital into energy commodities. And that inflow increases when the dollar falls, analysts say. Addison Armstrong, an analyst with TFS Energy Futures LLC…

Damn...I love tornadoes and spring storms but sometimes it's just too much. I can't imagine what the people of Greensburg, KS, must be going through right now....90% of the buildings in this town of 1500 people are gone. Historic Main Street is gone, the water tower is gone, the high school is gone...somehow the elevators and the courthouse pulled through. Watching a mile and a half wide tornado coming straight for your hometown...that must truly be terrifying. Eight confirmed dead so far. http://www.kansas.com/static/slides/050507tornadoaerials/

Chevy Mulling 4-Cylinder 'Vette April 1, 2006 | CheersandGears.com In an attempt to lure environmentally-conscious consumers to the Corvette line, Chevy will unveil a 4-cylinder variant of it's iconic sportscar. Debuting at the New York International Auto Show this month, the entry-level 'Vette will feature a 1.6-liter inline-four producing the same 103 horsepower and 107 lb-ft of torque as in the Aveo. Arriving on the heels of the foolishly inefficient Z06, 4-cylinder models will achieve EPA ratings in the mid thirties. Likely dubbed Corvette LS, buyers will choose from either a standard 4-speed automatic or a sportier 5-speed manual. While pricing has yet to be re…

Well, after spending almost $1,700 of my hard-earned and long saved-up money, the '96 Cadillac Fleetwood is back on the road, just about ready for daily-driver duty this Wednesday (the AURA goes back to the dealer Tuesday night). A new starter assembly, a new fuel pump and strainer, an new idler arm, and four new Kelly Navigator Gold White-Wall tires have been installed by my local repair shop. Add in a AAA Plus Membership (used to tow the car to the shop this past Wednesday (not to mention a jump-start yesterday!) and a full tank of gas and I'm pretty much broke. It runs great, and with the four new tires, their balance & alignment and the new idler arm it rides l…

Bloodbath in Germany Dressed in black camouflage gear, the only words 17-year-old Tim Kretschmer is said to have uttered during the schoolroom slaughter were: "Are you all dead yet?" Dozens of police arrived at the scene but the killer escaped and shot dead a gardener outside a psychiatric hospital opposite the school. He then hijacked a car, taking the driver hostage, and fled 20 miles to a car dealership. Once inside, he killed two more innocent people before a gun battle began with police The amateur video footage shows what is thought to be these last moments of his life. Regional police chief Erwin Hetger said: "He went into the school with a weapon and c…

Anybody know about this guy? I've heard lots of good things about him. He seems to be particularly popular with Internet folk. Official Ron Paul 2008 Website Honestly, I have no idea who I would vote for in the upcoming presidential election. Currently, it would probably be Paul, McCain, Giuliani, or abstain, in that order. At any rate, I can't very much trust anything the corporate media says, since that's more or less what I'm voting against. (I am aware of Lounge rule #2. I'm hoping this will spark nothing more than -- at most -- a constructive debate.)

http://editorial.autos.msn.com/listarticle...umentid=1069499 There is a subtle but important difference between fashion and a fad. Fashion is the inevitable evolution and refreshment of taste and style in everything from clothing to automobiles, which keeps those things from getting tiresome and stale. Fashion drives innovation for the sake of innovation, and it is generally considered a good thing. On the other hand, fads such as fuzzy dice are as ephemeral and unpredictable as fashion, but in the end are just plain silly. With the benefit of hindsight, it’s generally pretty easy to recognize a fad, but for each of the designs, technologies or accessories below, ther…

Last night as I was sitting alone and pitiful, enjoying my dinner at a local spot, in walks a pair of folks that made me stare a bit: a little, gray haired with glasses skinflint, 5'2" white dude in his late 50's, with a 5'10" black girl in her 30's, with a Supremes hairdo. Made the rest of the room look boring. Last night I went to bed pretty excited, knowing I'd be getting up somewhat early to go get my GTO. So I wake up at 7:30, have breakfast, eat, etc., then wait around for a while for my mom to get ready. My dad took my brother to school (I had finals this week so no school today) and was at work waiting for us to come pick him up. Anyways, the dealership is about an hour away and we get there at about 9:45. We sign all the papers and whatnot, and then we were looking into extended warranties, and we bought one, but the guy messed up and told us it was 6 days from today when it was actually 6 days from the first sale date. He caught his mistake before he had us sign the pap…

So I went on record a few months ago as saying I probably will not buy too many post 1979 Vehicles in the future. Now this obviously excludes stuff like a 5th gen. Camaro, so long as it is a true hardtop. But every once in a while I'm tempted. Right now my will is bending. Here at the Cadillac/Chevrolet dealer I work at we have a few nice modern rides, a 2004 Cadillac CTS (3.6) & 2002 Escalade EXT have both tempted me to fill out a credit app. But the car that really holds my interest, a white 2001 BMW 325Ci. It's not a 6-speed but then again Julie would need to be able to drive it and she's a bit manual-shy. The car is in great shape, has…

I was a little on edge Thursday, as I would be taking the Regal, with some 236,000 miles on it, up to Portland OR to park it in Mom's garage as I go to Europe and then come back to relocate/job hunt. I had a sensor and a tie rod end replaced the week prior, so I had spent some money on it. The tie rod cured the slight shimmy, but there was still a road drone which was atypical and it changed with the movement of the steering wheel. I said "WTF, I'm setting out on the 600 mile journey." As I got past Mt. Shasta, it got a little louder. About 20 miles south of Eugene OR, it started sounding like a helicopter and it was 8 pm. I proceeded at 50 to 55 mph, with the truc…

Last night, my wife and I took a trip of about 100km to another city. I got off the highway at my exit and pulled up to the stoplight at the end of the ramp. All of a sudden the dash lights up like a christmas tree (Service Engine light, Engine Power Reduced light, Service Vehicle light, Traction Control light) and "CODE 84" shows up in the DIC. Engine power was extremely limited, I limped off the road at about 20 km/h. Pulled over, checked the fluids, everything looked fine. Tried restarting the car a few times, same thing kept coming up. I started to call GM customer service, then realized I couldn't remember what the number of the code was, so I started the car back up…

So this is the deal, I was going to get a Camaro or Trans Am, but it's apparently out of the question because the insurance is way too high. Basically, this was a kick in the balls because that's all I ever focused on and never looked into any other cars. I really like muscle cars, but unfortunately the insurance is too high and the only ones available in my price range are Camaro, Firebird, and Mustang, but of course I would never buy a piece of garbage Mustang. I need help trying to find a GM used car that comes with a V8 and has decent performance for under $20,000. I was thinking maybe a Monte Carlo SS or a Pontiac Grand Prix, but both are hard to find with a V8. …

Shirtless Biden Washes Trans Am In White House Driveway WASHINGTON—Taking advantage of the warm spring weather Monday, Vice President Joe Biden parked his 1981 Trans Am in the White House driveway, removed his undershirt, and spent a leisurely afternoon washing the muscle car and drinking beer. "This baby just needs a little scrub down," said Biden, addressing a tour group as he tucked the sweat-covered top into the belt loop of his cutoff jean shorts. "Gotta get her looking good so I can impress the chicks when I'm cruising down Pennsylvania [Avenue]." White House aides said that Biden pulled into the driveway shortly before noon, the chorus of Night Ranger's "y…

A few months ago, I was browing the IL Secretary of State website and discovered that IL has a specialty license plate that features/celebrates Route 66. Since then, I've been considering switching to these plates on all 5 of my Monte Carlos. But, I haven't yet switched because of the increase cost of the plates [though, on the plus side of that, a portion of the fee supports the Illinois Route 66 Heritage Project]. I'm also not happy that the letter/number combinations are limited (i.e. 2 letters, 2 numbers ... or ... 3 letters, 1 number), and I haven't been able to come up with some good combinations.... It seems the forum software has been getting a little FUBAR here lately. First, my account was mysteriously deleted recently. Second, my PM inbox has been acting up and deleting new messages after I respond to them, and there are no copies of the PMs I send in my sent items folder. Third, the site seems to "stall" at times; meaning it doesn't load after a long period of time then re-loads as soon as I hit refresh, although slowly. And now I've been seeing this little oddity ... Anyone been encountering anything strange on the forums here lately?

The 360 degree LED television November 29, 2005 If you’re looking for a new centrepiece for your new entertaining area, the new 360 degree LED display from Dynascan offers exactly that – quite literally. Taiwanese-based Dynascan has been developing the 360 degree LED display for several years now and it is initially being used as an advertising medium in shopping centres and public areas, with an outdoor version just launched too. The first time you see one of the screens you’ll understand what the fuss is about – the quality, colour, contrast and definition is extraordinary and the screen is absolutely huge – the third generation of the new LED screens is being introd…

So we had a pretty major winter storm here in New England last night. It's been crazy weather. Last weekend the temps were in the 10's and 20's, earlier this week they were almost 60 with one storm. Temps dropped back down with this storm that just passed over us, giving a good chunk of New England one of the worst Ice Storms in recent history. Apparently much of the area is without power, although we're lucky and still have it. Here's some photos from this morning. I'll say this: ice is dangerous but it sure looks pretty.

...potholes. Yes, potholes ... those unsightly, menacing, treacherous holes in the roadway that absolutely love to feast on tires and suspension systems. I don't know about YOUR area, but in Chicagoland ... potholes seem to have overtaken the area roadways. On one road I frequent to and from work, one 3-4 mile stretch has been claimed by AT LEAST ONE MAJOR pothole every few FEET. And, each time one is repaired ... another one is proud to take its place. Heh ... as frustrating (and dangerous) as they are, it has become somewhat commonplace humorous to watch drivers find new ways to "outsmart" the potholes. In all my years of driving (admittedly, not that many, rel…

I'm at this place near my grandma and grandpas that looks like a dealership lot with a house out front. Weird, but I'm checking out a bunch of these Camaros. Then I see a Solstice GXP in bluestone I think it is? Well the owner of the car walks up to me and says, "Hey, jump in my car. If I beat you to your house, you can keep my car along with yours. If you win, the Camaro's mine and you can keep the Solstice." So, I go for it.. A car that's about 550 lbs lighter and has at least 40 more hp and tq? Hell yeah. So I see him take a different route to my house (how does he know where I live?) and I jump through the redlight and go speeding down to a 4 lane road where I turn …

I think previous topics about old C&G have been about old old C&G. This site has a kind of interactive snapshot of new old C&G (the one that died around this time last year). Some of the topics work; some don't. Relive the memories: http://web.archive.org/web/20050331054009/...rsandgears.com/

Well, as I said, the 11th, was me and Erik's one month anniversary of being together. I'm happy. Yay! However, I have another anniversary today, the 12th. It's somewhat related and something I can't believe I even remember the date of. But none the less, it started an important time in my life and really got me closer to being my true self. Can you guess? Curious? Well... One year ago, I came out to you guys as being attracted to... well... guys, haha. Course, I was still confused at the time and still not ready to completely rid the denial, so I came out as being Bi. So yeah... just thought I'd mention it since you guys love me.

So, I am driving this Tundra into a small business parking lot. It's got about 50k miles on it, and I've owned it since new. It is quiet and solid as the day it was born. I think to myself, "I really like this. I think this is one I'll keep." Seriously, this was a dream/nightmare that woke me up last night. I've got real issues.

So since the last thread went well, this was another series I used to do over at MT. Speaking of which, they made this an easy one with their main piece over there being a kinda-comparison of the new Acura supercar to the much-loved 458 Italia. For those interested- http://www.motortrend.com/news/new-acura-nsx-or-used-ferrari-458/ So the premise is simple, if you have ~220K burning a whole in your pocket, which do you buy, the new NSX or a used 458 Italia? If you want to throw in an alternate answer in ADDITION to your pick, feel free to do so, but at least answer the topic question. Thanks.

I rented a couple of movies last night from the everloving Blockbuster. One of them was The Incredibles. It was my first time seeing it, what a fun, action packed story! I love it. I also asked for the earlier version of Crash, with one of the Arquette sisters (no, not Alexis, ha) and I think James Spader and a fine Lincoln Continental convertible... unfortunately, they don't carry it... why was I not surprised. Has anyone seen any good movies lately, either first-run or home video?

http://www.worldcarfans.com/9080730.004/gm...at-pebble-beach With today's high profile design study prototypes, better known as “concept cars,” capturing the headlines on the pages of WCF and countless of other automotive publications, few enthusiasts know the origins of these forward looking design exercises. So here's your chance to experience it in the sheetmetal with an exclusive appearance at this year's Pebble Beach Concourse d’Elegance on Saturday, August 16. General Motors will be showcasing their historic Motorama collection vehicles together for the first time since 1960. It was more than fifty years ago General Motors featured the traveling Motorama whic…

Even though people are disillusioned by negative ads, it makes sense for politicians to employ them. Why? In most cases, negative things are remembered more than positive.... I wonder if this is because, in some cases, we are embarrassed by or don't believe we deserve the positive...? These 2 comments about me, though very cool, were just WEIRD for me to read...like I was stepping into someone else's life.... They came out of the blue.... Here's one of mine, the Citroen SM. 3.0l V6 from the Merek, Citroen innovation, and a bit of American panache. Features include swiviling, self-leveling headlamps with glass shielding, self-centering power steering, rainsensing wipers, and the famous hydropneumatic suspension system which delivered a composed but oh-so smooth ride over any terrain. As some regular Top Gear viewers know, Citroens were notably used as camera cars due to ability to glide over rough surfaces. Some Citroens can even reportedly be driven on three wheels thanks to this suspension setup. Just under 13,000 were built, about 2,400 of which were exported to America. When I was about four o…

We had to put our oldest cat, Rose to sleep last night. She's not been well for some time, but it got a lot worse yesterday morning. We decided that it was best to euthanize her to end her pain and suffering. We made an appointment for Monday morning. However when I was getting ready to go to bed last night at 2 or so, I noticed she was in her pet hut with her eyes open with a dead stare, not moving at all. It was painful to watch. We had to find an emergency center that was actually open. We took her their at 3am and they put her to sleep. I don't thinks he would have made it through the night. It sucks, our pets are family to us. At least she's not suffering …

We've already done the "create/bring back" thread and the "drop" thread, now here's one we were screaming to see....because we know it's what GM needs to do. I'd do the following: -Corvette to Pontiac (yes, it will be controversial, but why is the top dog sports car in GM's lineup a Chevy, the basic division?) -Sky to Pontiac (as the Solstice's mid-run freshening) -Torrent to GMC (what would a Torrent Denali be like?) -VUE to Pontiac (if Pontiac's going to have a Theta at all, they should have the coolest one) -HHR to Pontiac (should have been the Vibe's replacement) -Aveo to Saturn (Saturn just seems be a better place …

I have one. Well. Sort of. Its my demo-of-choice from the lot, a burgandy 2002 FWD Aztek with 109k on the clock. And boy do I love it. I honest-to-goodness think Pontiac made an error in judgement by settling for a cheeply-rebadged Equniox over going its own direction with a refined, improved Aztek. I say this because as lambasted as it was, the original Aztek had something to Torrent lacks - personality. And before someone makes a crack about personality being something the ugly girls have, I'll remind you the ugliness is truly only skin deep on this thing. One of the hallmarks of the Aztek is that its so ugly, its cool. There is no angle of this beast that is in any…

Well, you guessed it... Almost a year to the day that I bought my Focus ZX3 after totalling my Focus LX in that nasty 18 wheeler wreck, I have now destroyed the ZX3. The FOG's record: 4 accidents in the past 6 years involving 4 different cars. NONE of them my fault. I guess I have an imaginary target painted on my car or something. Hell, come to think of it, I've always dreamed of being in a demolition derby and I gues, in a way my dream has come true...LOL So, here's the story. I'm home for the weekend from school becaue I alternate weekends between here and there. The last 3 times I've been home have not been pleasant, the first being my going away party where two…

I'm pretty limited: 1. Pictionary 2. Trivial pursuit Haven't played cards in over 10 years. Pictionary: got "Times Square" once...quickly drew an aerial of the 5 boroughs and then lined in "Bdwy - 7th - 42nd" and our team got it as a result of it. I had to draw fast. Trivial Pursuit: you want me on your team for the geography questions...this chick once insisted she knew the answer and didn't...it was about a body of water touching Iran....the answer was "Caspian Sea" and I knew that...well, we got it wrong....pushy bitch.

This should be a fun thread. Post photos of your engine bay(s) of the car(s) you own. Feel free to tell us a little bit about your engine, its specs and the vehicle it belongs to. It'll be neat to see all of the different engines... ...and how clean you keep them Kicking this off will be the Intrepid, which I always keep clean: It's Chrysler's 3.5 litere, (213.583 cubic inch) High Output V6. It makes 253 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 255 ft-lbs. of torque at 3,590 rpm. The engine debuted in 1993 in the first generation LH cars, and was significantly reworked for the 1998 model year. In the 2000 model year it was only available in Intrepid in R/T guise, otherwise the…

We've had some discussion lately here about an old idea that some of us would like to see come back at GM, the whole "more variations per model, fewer models" thing. Well I have a twist and a proposition for you guys. My question is this: let's say the entire Buick division were reduced to the Epsilon II platform LaCrosse, and you are in charge of product planning, based on this restriction... it would be like you are basically sent back to 1960, a time when one basic bodyshell carried the entire Buick division of General Motors successfully. What would your lineup look like? You can shorten the wheelbase, lengthen it, and go with any number of bodystyle and trim var…

Chargerino was a constant on the site and I hardly see him around anymore. He gave us "Word Association" - a great thread that might collapse under its own weight. So, are his parents giving him crap, is he burned out on the forum or is he mad at Croc for their sparring and/or NOS for the haunted house? Any takes on this one?

I'm trying to arrange the transfer of my Silverado to the new owner and get the loan paid-off. It involves my getting someone to follow me all the way to northern Jersey to a bank branch. Meantime, I've found the perfect (I think) replacement truck (also in Jersey) that I don't want to lose. So I'm stressing bigtime over the logistics working out so that I drive into Jersey in one truck, and back out in the other.

First Pre-Worn Guitars, Now Pre-Worn Cars ... ? by black-knight, C&G Editor/Reporter 10th, May, 2011 When it comes to the world of guitars, a trend has developed over the last few years concerning "road worn" or "relic'd" instruments, where, for example, a brand new Fender Strat is made to look like it's been chained to the back of Billy Bob's old Dodge work truck and ravaged down a back country road. For Fender, just to name one manufacturer, it has been one of their primary ways to cash in on what draws some buyers to the vintage market: the frikin' mojo, man. Usually these pre-beaten guitars will cost you a considerable premium over their shiny and brand …

Today supercar shoppers are spoiled for choice. There's more supercar, and almost-supercar choices than you set on fire. Some of them do that themselves, though. But it wasn't always like this. No, rewind 13-14 years, and there but 2 real options- the Ferrari F430, and the Lamborghini Gallardo. The F430 was the gorgeous 360 Modena's uglier, but more athletic successor. A car that continued Ferrari's foray into the digital age that their cars now reside in. The Gallardo was the car that saved Lamborghini and was the first full product developed by their overlords- the VW Group. Sometimes called the Camry of supercars, there are more Gallardos than every Lam…
