So Friday I'm going to try to negotiate with a dealer in LaFollette, Tennessee on a 1998 Camaro V6 5-speed with a little over 176,000 miles. The dealer hasn't set an asking price yet as they haven't completely "prepped it for the lot yet" (it needs a brake booster installed and first-gear tightened up). Thus far, all of my research from the KBB website shows that there is about a two-hundred dollar or so average between their car and my truck with my truck actually being the more expensive vehicle. If anyone has any negotiation tips for me so that I will not come out of this deal losing anything, I'd really appreciate it. The Sonoma has got to go ASAP. All of the litt…

Sooo this is why I haven't been around much the last week or so: I've just started my Freshman II term here at Kettering University, which is also my Pledge term to become a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. Not only do I have a busy academic schedule, but I've become very involved this term. I've got 3 hours in meetings for my Pledge class along with another hour or two of meetings for the actual fraternity. Along with that, I've got philanthropy/community service to complete along with projects in and around the DTD house. I'm an active member in the Residential Hall Association once again this term, along with being a participant in sports, working out, and…

Woman finds 'stolen' Audi in neighbor's garage 6 hours ago BERLIN — An Audi sedan written off by an elderly German woman as stolen two years ago has resurfaced — in her neighbor's garage beneath a thick layer of dust. Police said Thursday the 82-year-old from the northern city of Hildesheim took the car in for repairs two years ago and had the mechanics drive it back to her house and park it in her garage. She got the keys and papers from her mailbox, but when she went to get the car it was nowhere to be found. So she reported it stolen. Fast forward to Wednesday when her neighbor went to clean up his unused garage so it could be rented. He found the car under "a …

My dad emailed me. He sold his 92 Seville! ARGH! 3700 bucks to an 18 year old. the kiddies these days buy cadillacs and other old GM cars and have clubs like GM car clubs etc. For me, this blows because now I can't ask to borrow the car this year if I need to unload one of mine to remain solvent in this 'new economy'. I think he got a good deal, and its just a car. But man, I thought he would keep that car forever. No biggie. Just sad! disclosure -i would not be sad if it was a 92 camry he was selling-

So How Many Kids Can Fit Into A Mazda Hatchback? William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com August 29, 2011 A South African man learned the hard way that you shouldn't try to fit many kids into one car. The unnamed man was stopped near Cape Town. When police took a look at the Mazda hatchback he was driving, they saw seventeen kids sitting or laying down in the car. Three kids were in the front seat with the driver, while the other fourteen were back making the most of the hatchback room with the seats folded. Police arrested the man for carrying to many people in his car, driving with a suspended license, and his car being found unroadworthy. …

We're going on a 4 day visit to my parents' place in Miami. Budget is offering a Solstice for $357.00. Albert really wants a convertible <and I agree>.... the other choice is a Mustang for $341.00 which makes the Pontiac a no-brainer. But how small is the trunk? Can we get two small roll aboards in there?

So for the next few months, I get to go through local neighborhoods canvassing to raise money for a campaign preserve a million acres of North carolina's natural areas from our rapid development. Yeah, I know what you're thinking, the C&G curse decided to come along for the ride... But it didn't. To my surprise, even though I drove cautiously, the traction control only came on twice in about 30 mins. One time was because I was in the parking lot and felt like fishtailing slightly. Now, granted, there was next to nothing on the main roads, and maybe 1/4 of an inch on non-main roads, but I thought it would be much worse than it was to drive it in the snow. I still wouldn't want to try to drive it in more than two inches or so, but I'd be pretty confident driving it in an inch or an inch in a half, I think. Anyone else driven a hi-power RWD car in the snow an…

In the wake of the popularity of the Lambdas and GM's switch to crossovers in favor of minivans, C&D has this on their front page: "Why buy a crossover -- Five concrete reasons to buy a minivan instead." (Including, SURPRISE, GM's best selling Lambda as the poster child for and a subject of the article) LINK: http://www.caranddriver.com/features/14267...-crossover.html Do I think this is a direct result of the Lambdas and their popularity? Probably not. Do I think it might've weighed into C&D's decision to write the piece AND use GM as the poster boy? Absolutely. Notcie how all of the japanese companies are merely tranferred sales from one model to another. Ye…

Well I took the Intrepid to Tom Manzi Dodge today to have the oil changed since it was about 100 miles before it wad due. The clerk/technician guy comes into the showroom where I am (ogling a 300C), and says they found an oil leak. Oh great, so it has one after all (if you remember from when I first got the car, the mechanic we normally go to looked at it and found oil on the engine but wasn't sure where and said he couldn't find out until they cleaned the engine...when it got warmer). Anyway, he brought me over to my car which was on the lift and showed me. As it turns out, the Oil Pressure Sending Switch is leaking oil. It's not a big leak, and not that expensive to fix…

My current daily driver (as most of you know) is a 2001 Ford Focus ZX3. So I've been hit twice by the curse in two weeks.... My son has wrecked the Miata TWICE. First time, he ran off a dark road when he missed a curve...hit a concrete culvert and ripped the front suspension out from under the car as he entered a bean field, broke the motor mounts, and twisted the cradle. Called in a favor from a friend of mine who owns a body shop, had the front suspension replaced with a front suspension from a clean 66,000 mile donor car which we got for next to nothing...paid cash for the repair so my son's insurance wouldn't go up, he is going to pay me back. Sooo...got the car back from the body shop Saturday, got an alignment, car drives much bette…

Hi Kids, I'm trying to hone in my photoshop skills with various different effects. I've been running across a bunch of various logos with unique special effects (like gloss, textures, etc) and essentially recreating/modifying them. I decided I wanted to try my hand at creating a metallic look (like those used on Automotive badges) and two hours later, I finished my modified version of the Saturn logo (I decided I wanted to see what it would look like as a circle). There are a few physical design errors (like the angle of the "rings"), but what I need to see is if it looks metallic to someone who hasn't been working on it. Thanks a bunch! -JC :-)

So after looking for work since September I've finally got a part-time job delivering for a local Pizza place. I have to say, so far I like it. I mean, I get paid to drive...pretty sweet. Anyway, I decided to to use the Shadow since the Prizm was blocked by another car and I don't really want to use the Intrepid for this kinda thing. So I get to work and start making deliveries, I'd made my first 2 and then was asked to deliver two more orders. Up until now the cars had been running fine...a little noisy (it now has an exhaust leak, after 18 years with it's original exhaust system), but otherwise fine. My first delivery took me to Market Basket, where customer service …

As it was, I took a few seconds to stare into her mirror and use every expletive I could think of, remembering to mouth each one carefully in case she could read lips. What the hell is wrong with people that the simple concept of looking where you intend to back-up before doing so escapes them?

I've been in California since Fri 12/18 to visit family for Christmas. When I went to rental car counter, the agent presented the Camaro upgrade option, so I took it out of curiosity. The choices with gray or red, so I took red (being Christmas and all). It's a V-6 car, pretty basic, but has still generated a fair amount of conversation wherever I've taken it. I've put about 600-700 miles on it so far and will write up driving impressions once I get some free time. Here's a few quick iPhone pics to get you started until I can take some with my real camera. The only byproduct of Hydrogen fuel cell engines is water vapor right? Well with all the recent advances in hydrogen production, wouldnt it make sense to move towards Hydrogen rather than E85 or BioDiesel... The only reason i say this is cause... 1) If everyone in large cities used hydrogen fuel cell engines, The water vapor produced from the cars and the relative lack of traditional emissions would create a sort of counter greenhouse effect. The increased water vapor in the area would reflect more light back into space, cooling the local area and of course providing more rainfall... instead of trapping in heat and causing crappy air quality. Now in places like the sout…

That I'll be able to order a new El Camino SS fairly soon. But, I'm thinking that I'll probably hold-off until the second production year. With all of the drivetrain advances happening so fast lately, I have a feeling that an engine upgrade will happen in the second or third year. Opinions? Other ideas/concerns? Another factor is that I'd like to be able to pay cash for it and I'll need some time to make that happen.

So is Korea stealing Japans thunder in terms of cars? Woman who works in the insurance agency down the street from us at work bought a new Genesis Coupe and had it parked out front when I went by on my way home. Got a good look at it...much better fit and finish than what I'm seeing from HONDA or Toyota...and not a terrible looking car, although it's no Camaro or GTI or C30 Volvo or anything... Thursday morning, as the sun was rising, you were setting. You never acted your age. You wrote the book on growing old gracefully. Though it was only your body that grew old. I don't think your mind was ever past 40. You were more modern and in-tune than people half your age. A gay grandson wasn't even remotely an issue for you. What a pleasant surprise it was to have an 80-something grandma ask about boyfriends. Pretty great for an old farm girl. Thursday morning, with a son and daughter at your side, your heart decided it was time to go. For the first time ever, you won't be in your chair watching those damn Reds or the godforsaken Bengals when I walk into your ho…

My dad's getting rid of his 2008 Infiniti M35x in favor of a 2010 Chevy Malibu 2LT. The reason for the change is really it had gotten difficult for him to drive a car all the time and he's taking over his wife's SUV (2008 Mercury Mariner)...and his wife found the Infiniti to be "too fancy" and wouldn't drive it. So *really* this will be his wife's car (and she used to have an Aveo), but I'm still happy I was able to talk him into a Malibu as I really hated the Subaru Legacy GT which was their other choice. One of my friends is buying the Inifiniti for his wife. And yes, I did use guilt and "as a taxpayer, you own part of GM" to squash the Subaru deal...finding a buye…

Is it the law over there that everything they make has to be defective junk? Today's frustrations: - Brand new defective fluorescent bulb - Plastic-cased flourescent starters that twist apart as they are installed - Those same starters 6 months later that crumble to pieces due to degraded plastic and so require dismantling the light fixture to remove the remains. Thanks loads, Walmart! We have to find a way to eliminate this junk from our market.

as much as I'd like to see DEJ win the 500 (and all other races this year), part of me wants to see a Toyota win the 50th running of the "Great American Race" simply because of the irony it would be. Well, that an the reaction racing fans would have.

I want to hear better stories than mine. New Year's Eve - worked the whole day while others split early. Went on a mission to clean up my whole place and put everything in order for the new year and got a damn good start - paperwork, backing up computer, etc. Went out and chatted with neighbors at around that time. New Year's Day - was an idiot... went to Tahoe. Thought I'd have the place to myself... 65,000 people had partied there the night before and were still hanging around. 20 minutes in line at Starbucks, etc. I got over the pass over there without chains. Started raining at about 5 pm and, at 6,000 to 7,000 feet, it was snowing but wit…

I've learned many things. Most importantly, I've learned that I can start a hilarious meme that takes up multiple pages in a thread, then gets its own thread, currently at four pages, and likely to grow. I also learned that my fiancee can tell I haven't shaved by talking to me on the phone. 'Twas either a very good guess, or she could hear my facial foliage brushing against the phone. Finally, I learned that if I need clean boxers, they're on the back of the sofa.

I think there is a lot of talking and overreacting going on around the net about CAFE killing this and CAFE killing that. It seems that a lot of executives might be playing to politics. If this is the agreement we got, then it sounds pretty positive and pretty attainable. http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article...0621/1014/rss13 Maybe I'm remiss, but I just don't see why everyone is so upset at this point. We can continue to engineer our way to this goal, that is, *IF* it isn't revised in the first place (which by the wording of the article, sounds like it might happen down the road) A FEW NOTES: 1) Don't even bring up the oil at $100/barrel crap, because 1)…

Just kidding. Well, sort of. I'll be needing it for a while yet, but the payments have to go one way or another. Depending on what I decide to do, the truck may be gone before you know it. If I decide that my contracting days are over, it will have to go.

http://jalopnik.com/5185281/study-women-more-attracted-to-men-in-expensive-cars We have a rather motley attraction of rides here at C and G, and this thread is for fun more than anything. What kind of female (or male) should be attracted to people who post here based on their ride? What kind of woman would be attracted to a guy who squirrels away 1960's Pontiacs. or collects Miatas, or drives an old Intrepid, or a Cobalt, or whatever.... This is our chance to make fun of ourselves... Who wants to fire the first shot? Chris

Both laptops are within $10 of each other and of the same brand and similar model. Laptop 1: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T6400 ( 2GHz 800MHz 2MB ) Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium 64 4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1066MHz Laptop 2: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P7350 ( 2GHz 1GHz 3MB ) Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium 2 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz The rest of the specs are either the same or don't factor into my decision. Do I go with the faster FSB but slower Ram and 32bit Vista or do I go with slower FSB but faster RAM and 64bit Vista? Or spend $100 more and get the faster FSB, faster RAM, 4 gigs of ram, and 64-bit Vista?

So You Wanna See Speed Channel's Top Gear Competitor? By black-knight (Self-Appointed Tries to be Somewhat Regular News Contributor) for Cheers and Gears.com 23rd December, 2010 No, obviously Tanner Foust isn't jumping ship from the History Channel to publish a book or go to another show and we have no earthly clue where the, uh, Billy Ray Cyrus impersonator pictured alongside Foust and Adam Carolla (who winds up fitting into this whole picture) has wound up at, but you do remember reading the news lately that Speed Channel is planning a show that will take the wind out of Top Gear America's sails, yeah? Well apparently the precursor, or pilot if you will, to th…

I see we recently had one of those so called "hypothetical situation" threads posted here in the Lounge, so I thought I would start one of my own. So, let's say you're tired of your daily driver. You know it's been reliable 80 percent of the time. You know it's a good car. However, you're also tired of the confusing fuel economy, the dying gas gauge, the puzzling glitches with the O2 sensors, the bugs that have bored their way into the ABS system (which caused you to skid into a ditch), the deteriorating paint and bodywork, and the styling which you keep losing your infatuation with every day. What do you replace that car with? The word "replace," in that sentence, mean…

If so, what was it? My one and only RHD experience (so far) was a Turner sportscar. It was manual and a race car - so it was a bit challenging. It would take me a while to become used to shifting with my left hand, I think.

Well, when the dealership changed out the spark plugs when we first got the GTO, they drove it around for a minute to make sure everything was okay. Anyways, they said the instrument cluster glitched while they were driving it, so they ordered us a new one and said they'd call us when it came in. We noticed that when the GTO is just sitting at a stoplight or in park it idles a little rough (just a slight shake every few seconds, nothing too major). So, when my dad brought it to the dealership he asked them to see if they could figure out why it did that (they said it wasn't normal). It turns out the guy before me put in a performance camshaft and some lightweight pullies …

Hey, PB: How's your new job looking thus far? God, that first day or two until you get the lay of the land is so weird. We've gone through bizarre changes at work in the last 2 months...probably more complex than what needs to be put on the site. However, it has all meant MORE work for me (bleh), so now I am constantly behind and playing catch up. There just aren't enough people around with a minimum of 8 to 10 years of experience to manage projects in the area. I miss a 40 hour work week. So, report back, bud.

So, a friend of mine asked me who I voted for. I told them McCain. They asked why. I responded "Because he is white." Is it wrong to vote for McCain because he is white? Consider the following; 1) By voting for McCain strictly based on race, I am subscribing to a VERY BASIC human quality of electing or hiring someone that is LIKE ME. We do this because it makes us feel safe. You can see a very good example of this in corporate america. It's dominated by white, homogenous, conservative men. All of you have probably interviewed for a job. Did you conform to the culture of the employer? When I go to a job, am I going to be clean shaven and wear a business suit or am…

They are off-white plastic buttons & one unthreads, forcing me to press on the sharp threaded stud. It hurts my middle fingertip. I made it up the hill nearly to the top when a tiny orange car rounds the corner and smacks into the snowbank on the left. I park on the right side (the road is quite narrow) and jog over to it. ... that a new El Camino is going to happen. Because of that, I think I have a new mission. By the time I can order one I want to be entirely debt-free and have enough on hand for a cash purchase . I know it isn't the "American way" but I'm tired as hell of finance charges and being tied to payments. In fact, I'd like to find a way to never borrow again. The way I see it, you are never really free when someone has you by the financial short hairs. I would like to be able to live wthout the burden of monthly payments needing to be paid no matter what unforseen cicumstances arise. Without that burden, any temporary crisis is just that: temporary. But, once you miss any m…

Procrastinating doing work for work, and on Carmax since they take multiple pictures of every new vehicle on their lots. Thought I'd check out a new Avalon... ...not sure why... ...just curious. What do I see? Scrooling through, first confirmed how literally this "all new" Avalon really is the same old car since '05, but with some chrome trim, a few different mold shapes on the plastic, and yep, same "okay then..." build quality these have been known for in the past few years. Not the greatest. Admittedly, it's a small piece, and not uncommon. But a brand new $36k Avalon Limited, dealer taking pictures, and they snap one of the sunroof with the trim ring inside hangi…

I'm going to end up getting pushed into getting a car before I wanted to... and I have a wonderful dealer not too far from me that has very reliable cars. I can't wait that long. So, I figure I'd throw out a nice, harmless topic. Have you cars got their springtime cleaning yet? I've found some good deals on wax, so as soon as it warms up, they should get a nice wash and wax. I've already started cleaning up the inside, but I'm debating about either getting a carpet cleaner, or maybe letting the a place clean it for me. It's been a rough winter, and the cars are starting to show it.
