In 1997 I was only 40 do that math on that one. Had a seven year old son and four year old daughter. Owned a 1990 Pontiac Grand Prix with less than 60,000 miles on the clock and a 1987 Olds Delta 88 Sedan with barely 90K on her. This was before my addition to the house and car buying spree 2001-2008 life was simpler and cheaper. Another interesting fact was I dug out an old National Geo something I don't get anymore and found over 10 different GM ads in it. And two of them caught my eye each for BOF SUV's. One a Yukon the other a Tahoe. I have enjoyed this little trip down memory lane and feel free to share where you were in '97 and what you drove... While enjoying these …

This morning it really hit me like a ton of bricks. This year has been all about panic and overreaction. From the obvious confusion of all of the federal legislators to the G3, there has been a strong tendancy to rush headlong into disaster mode. Yes, things are bad and will get worse, but I can't help thinking that no one is thinking anything through before reacting. Maybe it is just that I have had the experience of living through the late '70's, but I see the degree of panic exhibited across our society as near-hysterical. I don't mean to diminish the severity of things, but I do worry that we are so afraid now that we are flailing about and taking actions we wil…

We finally found a trailer to haul the Jetta to my house so I can actually do something with it. After a $110 tow bill (I'm just happy they didn't charge me for having it sit there for over a month), we loaded it up and brought it home. I've been able to look it over and see what's good and what's not. The biggest thing, the engine looks good. The transmission looks fine, as well, but the gear indicator is saying it's in drive, no matter what you put it in, which prevents me from being able to start it up. Same with the cooling fans that are shoved inward. We disassembled it somewhat (with the help of a sawzall) and it doesn't look that bad up front besides, you know, the…

So, it's been a week or so since I washed the Balt. So today it went to the car wash. While drying it, I noticed something: It's bubbling up rust at the bottom of the driver's side door! The Balt is not even 4 years old yet! WTF? To say I'm disappointed would be an understatement. I mean, it could just be a fluke, but still....... I'm taking it to the dealership to see if anything can be done.... Man....

Apparently, there's a rapist in Linkin Park. I'm betting on the DJ or maybe dude who raps. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ua-OqYZC1DA&feature=related And, of course, the dudes who brought you Strutting Ass with Autotune and the Double Rainbow song turned it into this delightfully catchy tune that might just be Billboard Hot 100 material. Mr. Dodson might just have the raw talent to rival T-Pain.

There are things we all love doing that are car-related. I really enjoy washing my car an, given the time, I like changing my own oil. There are a couple of things I really dont like to do. One is vacuum the interior. I like keeping my car clean but I hate doing this which sucks because I have black everything and any bit of dirt shows. Another interior related thing I dislike is cleaning up from the night before. If the night before was a bad one, chances are there is blood or vomit in the back seat. If the night before was good, possibly some other fluids. Either way there are probably handprints and fingerprints all over the windows. But my absolute least favo…

Well, I haven't yet, but probably will.... Anyways... :D I went looking at new cars yet again! Yay! My first trip was to Brockway. The dealer was meathead Eazer Chevrolet-Pontiac. What did they have, you ask? Well, well, well... a G6 GT coupe. It was black. Looked awesome and again much better than expected. But, I'll let the pics do the talking... My second trip was over to Dubois. The first dealer was Osbourn Pontiac-Buick-GMC. What did they have, you ask? A few G6 GTP coupes and a few Torrents. Again, I'll let the pics speak... My third trip was over to Murray's Honda also in Dubois. I saw the new Civic coupe once again. My thoughts: Lo…

Just wondering what everyone else here thought regarding current Delta-based cars. The one I feel is the best is, of course, the one that isn't available here. I feel that the Opel Astra received all of the attention due to the demanding European market. Just take the first IONs for an example. It was panned by everyone. Car & Driver called it the "most disappointing all-new American car in over a decade" while they described the Cobalt compared to the ION as "from dead last to head of the class". It just doesn't seem right to me that we're forced to take Grade B or even C products compared to GM Europe's current Grade A products. Chevrolet Cobalt Chevrolet HHR …

Is BEAUTIFUL! Standing in the God awful lines for the shuttle back to my house was terrible but I made many, many new friends. Furthermore...the people asking "Wow...is THAT an Escalade?" and the "That Chevy is nice hunnie what is it?" that the DPD were cruising the streets in was pretty remarkable. The city looked great and the Sprint Stage was THE happening place to be. Such a great time down in Detroit and the Big 2 and a half really did A LOT to impress.

Hey I saw this odd FORD truck thing in the local cemetery and wondered if anyone knew what it was. My boyfriend said it was one of the first SUVS that was made...but he's no expert. And as a side note, I am very happy to get a replacement H for my hood! A nice guy with a del Sol had an extra one because he shaved all of his off. People with del Sols are automatically friends with other people that have del Sols. It's like some kind of secret club. Other del Sol drivers honk at me when they see my car and are always more than willing to help with anything or talk about cars. It's really neat, and that doesn't happen with a lot of things, so I feel lucky I reeeee…

I've always been curious as to what the problems were with the Cadillac Catera. I liked the car when it came out in 1997; heck, even a few people in my development own one. But it seems as if you mention the name "Catera" here and people get all angry. What exactly was wrong with this car? Did GM/Cadillac fix the problems in its last model year (2001)? Thanks for the insight!

Well, it was a hell of a stressful weekend, what with getting my ass canned on Friday, out-of-the-blue (what the hell am I saying, we all saw the writing on the wall months ago.) For background, see the "Philosophically speaking, are you happy?" thread. Anyhoo, this afternoon I went for a follow-up interview at the Lincoln-Mercury dealership in town (after a preliminary meeting on Friday afternoon). I landed the job. I'll be doing the same thing I was at the other dealership, except the hours are much better, and there are a few perks the other place did not match. I'm happy and thankful this ordeal appears to be over. I start July 3rd. *whew*. Also, I don't know …

Hey guys, On thursday I'm leaving with the family and one of my friends to Maui. We are staying at Napili. My family has been there a couple times before, and I've been once before when I was a lot younger. I don't remember too much from it. My buddy is excited because he hasn't been there before, and he loves fish so he is planning on snorkeling and scuba/snuba diving and just hanging out in the water for the most part. Does anyone know of any activities to do around there? Like in the Ka'anapali area or Lahaina or wherever? There will always be the snorkeling/diving options, but I was also thinking maybe parasailing, or personal watercraft rentals or just something a …

Ramp Chevrolet in Port Jefferson, NY had its biggest (and probably last) car show of the year today. Corvettes and Camaros of all ages were the main attraction, with the show being sponsored by Long Island-based Camaro and Corvette owner's clubs. The perfect weather and the fact that Ramp is about 5 miles from my house made this an opportunity for a nice midday bike trip. I tie the bike to a telephone pole and walk into the north end of the lot, where all the Camaros are. Right where I park the bike is a gorgeous sunset orange Z28 - for sale no less: I then head on over to the north lot, where most of the Camaros are. First stop: the first gens.

I don't mean it in any disrepect to the US but I don't have to go down to Detroit anymore for college!!!! I am very pleased as it was going to cost a fortune. I just found out that Humber College in Toronto is the first school in Canada to offer Automotive Design. This is great so I can stay at home and drive down everyday. This school will also be cheaper to get into, don't need to pay for residence, and it is all in Canada within 45 minutes from me now. Now this is only bad for me in the aspect that: I probably won't be getting another car until I can save up for a relatively new commuter and I will have to commute everyday even in our nasty winters.

One of the highlights of the car hobby for me is the Ocean City, MD Spring cruise-in. It is a spectacular event, a Spring break-out of every kind of hot rod, muscle car, and everything in between automotive. I just reserved a room at the Rehoboth Beach Guest House (closest I could get to OC, everything's full there by now), so I'm set. I'm wondering if anyone from C&G is planning on going, maybe we can meet up. Here's a link: http://www.specialeventpro.com/cruisin.php

I hope no one minds but I wanted to start a thread where everyone can contribute quick, easy and low-cost ways to improve your ride. I'm primarily interested in this thread being about non-cosmetic mods although this first one kind of straddles the fence. Anyway, here goes the first one which is a hack that recommends simply wrapping the inside of your car door in order to make it more visible when you open it on the street: http://auto-trim.org/2013/12/11/prevent-accidents-by-wrapping-the-inside-of-your-door/

In honor of my 1969 Pontiac turning 38 today, I am using this sig for 1 week in celebration. The Custom-S was built 6/13/69, and yes that was Friday the 13th. Muhahahahahaha She was bought by my father at Jim Harrell Pontiac, 3800 W Hillsborough Ave, Tampa, FL 33614 six weeks later for 3K loaded, today she is priceless to me. She has a 350 engine with an Automatic trans. I may be burried in her when that time comes. Don't you all smile at once! Happy Birthday, to my 1st car, which is still with me today!

The latest addition to Jay Leno’s incredible collection of automobiles is one of BMW’s hydrogen-powered 7-series sedans. Mr. Leno is well-known for his love of cars and follows in the footsteps of Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Richard Gere and Sharon Stone by taking the keys to a Hydrogen 7. The green theme of the 7-series is echoed in Leno’s massive 20,000 square-foot garage, which is largely powered by steam. Another notable “green” car in Leno’s collection is his bio-diesel-fueled EcoJet from the 2006 SEMA show. The Hydrogen 7 is powered by a V-12 with 260 horsepower and runs on traditional gasoline or liquid hydrogen. Cruising range is approximately 125 m…

I'm excruciatingly bored right now and I happened to notice that innocent ol' Ocn surpassed the comatose Fly as master of the post count. In other news, as of yesterday, a distributor has been ordered and is on it's way. I'm quite excited to bring life back to my Milly. Well, if I don't have any more obstacles to tackle. Hopefully the battery will still hold a charge. It's ancient and has been dead for a good 9 months now. As well, having sat for so long certainly couldn't have been any good for it. I'll be sort of sad if any new issues pop up. Whatever it takes, though. I need to get it back on the road so I can stop polluting poor little Ramsaytown and hand the Cutla…

I've searched the world over for a car that I think would fill the bill for blu's new car. This car has a small frame and is low to the ground, just like blu. He can easily escape/run away (no pun intended to Ford) from the next gay driver he smashes into since this car has no doors or roof. It will allow him easy access, always a plus to the car too. It will also allow him to tan on those HOTTTT AMISH days in Lancaster, PA. Ladies and Gentlemen I bring you the Zest, which comes in an assortment of bright colors so others will be able to see blu approaching from miles away in all directions. This car is also good for trips to nude campgrounds in PA. I've asked CPF, if we …

My 2007 Silverado Classic Crew Cab was rear ended by a speeding Ford Exploder while stopped at a red light. It bent the frame at least where the tow hitch attaches and pushed the bed into the cab. The drivers side rear door doesn't close all the way anymore. The rear window broke but since I recently had my windows tinted it stayed in one piece. I don't know yet if it will be totaled yet. It will never be the same so I would rather have a new truck. My back and neck are sore but I came out ok so far. It hurt most when I see my truck. I shrunk a picture down a bit to show the damage.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8299079.stm What happened to global warming? By Paul Hudson Climate correspondent, BBC News Average temperatures have not increased for over a decade This headline may come as a bit of a surprise, so too might that fact that the warmest year recorded globally was not in 2008 or 2007, but in 1998. But it is true. For the last 11 years we have not observed any increase in global temperatures. And our climate models did not forecast it, even though man-made carbon dioxide, the gas thought to be responsible for warming our planet, has continued to rise. So what on Earth is going on? Climate change sceptics, who passi…

It's amazing how fast things can change in the span of three days. On Tuesday, I was: knee deep in a project for work with what seemed like very little light at the end of the tunnel; the announcement that my company might need to have another round of layoffs this summer due to lack of incoming work; my stocks were getting hammered beyond belief; I was at 45 hours of work for the week even though it was only a Tuesday. Today: the project went out without a hitch and is probably the most complete drawing set issued of the projects I have been a part of; my company won a project that is twice as big as our largest project we have done to date, laying all employment con…

So I was reading the latest issue of CR and in the auto section they had a little side article about how cars that are recalled does not mean they are unreliable or unsafe. The ONLY reason why they wrote this was because St. Toyota has been falling to the nasty recall bug the last few months. NEVER would they have put that in there and used GM or Ford as an example. P.S. WHERE DO YOU WANT THE WIPER SWITCH -- either its on the stalk and its "too busy" or its not and "hard to find"

Hey, if I recall, it was late summer when the BIG CRASH occurred. Never thought C&G would continue to exist. In the interim, I got involved in an evening program in graduate business. I took 6 semester credits (Investments and Estate/Gift Taxation). Both were ball busters, but got an A and a B, respectively (just checked today) while working 50 hours a week and running around to get my mom to finalize her estate plan (in another state, no less). Also, went to Argentina and Uruguay (where it's summer) during Thanksgiving week instead of going with my mom and brother to a condo in Bend, OR. That was a slam dunk. Where would you have gone? Duh. 2006 Murano S AWD. 17,500 miles. shift_DEAD Cranks, but won't kick over. I could really care less how or why, I just know its Enterprise's problem and I learned a bit more about that (in)famous Japanese reliability. More this weekend when I post a review. In other news, I drove my dad's "Below Average Reliability" Bonneville past 117,000 miles today. Never failed to turn over.

So my brother's moving, and I spent the day helping. Part of my duties was to drive his truck from the sold house to the storage facility. Bad move on my part. He's got an '04 Silverado 1500 extended cab Z71, 122k miles, with a 330-horse GM replacement engine and Flowmaster exhaust. It was like going home. I turn into a blithering idiot when I drive a pickup truck. Why can't I get it out of my system?

At the beginning of the year, in the sports world, the New England Patriots were deemed cheaters with quarterback Tom Brady allegedly throwing underinflated balls in a playoff game against the Indianapolis Colts. Two weeks later the Super Bowl closed with perhaps the worst call in the history of the game by the losing Seahawks. In June, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that denying same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk, was made a hero by some marriage traditionalists by refusing to do her job in issuing same-sex marriages licenses and was sent to jail for it. Lots of people got sick eating at Chipotle from an E.coli outbreak in July…

Hello all this is Chris, gm4lifes (John) son Chris. I went car shopping with my dads brother because my father was busy. Every year it happens the family gathers for Christmas and this year my uncle asked me for some help car shopping. He knows I enjoy my cars and know alot about them so we set a date. Went and got a price on a Camry first and then drove it, didn't like it, then got in an Accord didn't like it. He came to his favorite the new 2008 Malibu LTZ V6 and loved it, and got the price of 25,100.00 after all rebates and was satisfied until the he said what about an Impala. I had orginally asked my uncle to consider one but didn't. He started number crunching the …

This Dream Garage thread is going to be similar to one I did recently where you have to pick from certain choices to fill certain criteria, or roles. But this time it will be based on nationality rather than price. You will have mostly the same roles in this one- * One off-road vehicle- Must be a truck or SUV. * One daily driver- Absolutely NO dedicated sports cars or sports coupes- so no Mustang, Camaro, Chally, etc. * One weekend/fun car- Anything sporty goes for this one, but must be street legal. * One track car- Anything intended mostly, or exclusively for track use here- Atoms, BAC Monos, etc. Does not have to be street legal. * One fam…

Today at lunch, I had to go past the local BPG dealership. I immediately noticed a nice looking '09 Vibe GT in Mystic Blue with sunroof. Mystic Blue is a sort of teal color, and with the handsome 18" GT rims, it was by far the best looking new Vibe I've seen yet. After work, I decided to stop in and take a test drive. "My" salesdude was there who sold me my truck. He stuck a dealer tag on the car and I drove it off the dealer's front lawn. The Vibe GT is pretty much a loaded vehicle, with a long list of standard stuff, including cloth seats with leather trim and a kickass Monsoon sound system. The 5-speed manual transmission and clutch work fine together. The 2.4…

This is the 2nd of 3 July 4th themed UDG threads I had planned. Just wasn't able to get them all up before the 4th. Since we won our independence from the British, it seems fitting that we have a Dream Garage dedicated to our tyrant turned ally. In matching our American one, this one will allow 10 choices. Rules- 1) British makes ONLY. 2) Any era is allowed. 3) You are allowed ONE concept/one-off choice. 4) You are also allowed ONE racecar/non-street legal choice. 5) You MUST have at least ONE off-road/SUV choice. 6) Maximum of 10 vehicles. That's it, enjoy!!

listen here You'll need earphones or speakers. This is an NPR report on "behavioral economics". They start with a rather long description of people trading in their SUVs at Car Max. There are some funny moments like when the author describes why people over react to gas prices. Fun segment in my opinion.

MEXICO CITY – A new swine flu strain that has killed as many as 68 people and sickened more than 1,000 across Mexico has "pandemic potential," the World Health Organization chief said Saturday, and it may be too late to contain the sudden outbreak. The disease has already reached Texas and California, and with 24 new suspected cases reported Saturday in Mexico City alone, schools were closed and all public events suspended in the capital until further notice — including more than 500 concerts and other gatherings in the metropolis of 20 million. A hot line fielded 2,366 calls in its first hours from frightened city residents who suspected they might have the disease. …

Well, with all the crappy new lately (and it sucks to know that "other stuff" too), it makes me want to just get away from cars for a while. One simple thing is stopping me- my Cavalier. Yes, a simple Cavvy...... Even though my plans to "speed" her up are done (just a waste of money with a family now), My buddy is working on his beater 03, which has me wanting to do a little "upgrading". Granted, just wheels and tires, and few small goodies....it is amazing what a little work on your car will do. I want my next project to a classic car (GM vintage), and find a car that will be a fun 1st classic car..... I almost feel bad about spendin the money, but....gotta hav…

I put down Bleu Cheese because that's what I insitictively ordered as a kid or teenager. However, the reality of it is that the brand of bleu cheese made a world of difference. Nothing can touch the bleu cheese from Bob's Big Boy. I used to put it on my Big Boy combo's salad and order a side of it in which to dip my fries. I would now say that Thousand Islands seems to be more reliable. It's almost always good whereas Bleu Cheese is more variable. I do NOT like Italian dressing...it's kind of boring. However, the Italians think we're weird because we put "mayonnaise on our salad," as one commented to me. What type of dressing do you prefer?

State considers charging by the mile Isabel Mascarenas 4 days ago St. Petersburg, Florida - Motorists are fueling up less often these days. Some are buying fuel efficient cars, while others are simply driving less. That means every gallon that sits in a gas station's pump is money the state loses in taxes for road projects, an estimated $7 billion over the next five years. Instead of raising the gas tax, some state transportation officials are considering charging motorists based on the miles they drive. Keith Craig says it seems like a good idea, "The general idea seems to be fine for retirees who don't drive too much." This is how the program would work: a GPS t…

Does anyone have any experience with different types of siding? Sure, aluminum is old-skool, and vinyl is ubiquitous, but what about fiber cement siding? Does anyone have any knowledge of it? Is it expensive, and if so, is it worth it? Does the color stand up to time, or does it have to be painted after a while? Thanks!

** 2010 is just around the corner ... already?! ** Holy cow ... it's hard to believe that 10 YEARS ago people were wondering if the change from 1999 to 2000 would disrupt life as we know it...! Yet, here we are ... on the brink of "Twenty Ten". Plenty has changed, but some things remain the same. Life is rapidly moving forward ... despite the turmoils and triumphs we've experienced and witnessed ... some of which seem ages ago, others like just yesterday. Here's to 2009 and years prior ... while looking to 2010 and beyond. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Kinda appropriate to call it a countdown since 24 premiered in syndication this weekend across America. In any case, all I really remember is a nice lowered Intrepid on fins, a 90s Cutlass Supreme sedan on some sort of big dubs (yes, both cars looked quite nice), and a advertising shrink wrap equipped Pacifica (from far away, I thought it was an SRX)
