Winter in NY sucks for one more reason. Potholes. By early March, these things aren't mere holes in the road, and in many cases, they're unavoidable. Case in point: late tonight I was on my way home doing around 35 when a trench (no, really) caught my eye about 10 feet ahead. I would've gladly swerved around this monster, but it crossed all 4 lanes of the road. With nowhere to go and not nearly enough time to stop, I took a deep breath and hit it straight on. This thing rocked my car hard enough for me to feel it. Luckily, my front bumper was saved, but I'm sure my suspension felt it. Ouch. How a crater this deep could even be allowed to exist is beyond me. …

allright guys im a bad kid going out after im supposed to be in but i happened to find myself in the possession of a police intercepter (active duty cops) and a new 2004 GTO modified (friends) last night for a half hour........ what i noticed for one thing is that those intercepters are still as quick as can be for such a large vehicle and the intercepters are amazingly agile for their size... i also noticed in his turbo charged, port and polished, full catback ls2 powered GTO the intercepter fell to the distance no matter who drove either car, in traffic the GTO wins by far, it may not be extremely fast comparitively but the size and the suspension allow you to feel …

Has anyone ever heard of this before? Around the country and especially around the upper Midwest, dozens of bright college-age males have been found drowned in rivers, lakes, and ponds after a night of drinking. The "smiley face killer" theory was proposed by a couple retired NYPD cops because a dozen or so of the crime scenes had smiley faces carved into objects nearby. They are found after they have left a bar or party alone. I believe one person survived and told the police someone had pushed them over the edge into a river. The retired cops have pieced together clues and believe it may even be a ring of serial killers around the country. The reason I bring this …

(Admin note: I was able to find the 2002 in my local copy of the old C&G database. It is appended on this post - Avant1963) Since CSpec asked for them, here's a redux of the prior years' editions of Cheers and Jeers, the customary end of year summaries of all that is good and well and bad and ugly with GM and C&G. I've deleted all the links to the threads since they're dead anyway. The premier 2002 edition of Cheers and Jeers is lost in cyberspace forever with the old forum boards. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cheers and Jeers for 2004 Time for the third annual list of the best and worst of GM and C…

Okay, we've all had our fun with outright enthusiast cars and their fabulous ICE engines, but now it's time to be a little more ecologically conscious. Rules- 1) Production cars only. 2) These are your only vehicles. 3) Any era and market is allowed. 4) MUST BE HYBRIDS!! 5) Maximum of 5 choices. Though if you wish to expand to a Top 10 after picking 5, that is fine. Have fun!

So just chillin' at home today and surfin' the web... went over to Craigslist.com and played around looking at different vehicles for sale. I decided to see what GMCs were listed and found this one: http://southjersey.craigslist.org/ctd/1054584216.html It's a 2001 GMC Sierra 2500 SLT Extended cab 4WD with 38,400 original miles for $12,900. Is this something I should look into? I'm questioning the 6.0L V8 and 2500 series - if it were a 1500 series with the 5.3L V8 I'd probably not be asking for any advice!! I don't really need a 2500 series, and the 6.0L V8 I think is overkill for my needs. However, for some reason I really like 2000-2002 GMC Sierras the best (m…

I had Arkus out running around the place a while back, and he disappeared from view just long enough for me to know that it meant trouble (with Arkus that's about a minute or so). So I start calling him. He still doesn't show up. Just as I'm about to jump in the Silverado to hunt him down, he rounds the bend from behind the barn. Carrying a fox in his mouth. I yell at him and he drops the fox, and crawls over to me (realizing that he's screwed-up again). So I grab a hold of of him thinking that I'll need to put a wounded fox out of its misery. When I looked up, the fox was running away (looking pretty pissed-off). I breathed a sigh of relief, thinking I'd…

Anyhow, kid in an Acura Integra comes up to him before the open track event and says in broken english "you...very old man...you fat...have very...very slow car...you see me...you get the phuc out of my way...you hear old man..." About ten laps into the session the MINI driver laps the modified Integra. About antoehr 7 laps and the MIMI laps the Integra again. So GM will be putting IC engines on the volt. So it still periodically has to burn some gas. Nearly all our cars in this country burn gasoline. But some pundits say we should all have electric cars. So why don't we get rid of the fuel on cars and just use all the fuel we burn profusely every day in our cars, we should use that fuel to power electric power generators instead? and just plug all the cars in. Would we use more or less fuel this way?

No matter what cars are in my fleet, I always want to drive the most recent acquisition the most. Since the Blazer hit the road, the wagon has been sleeping in the barn and the Silverado has done quite a bit of driveway sitting. It has close to four times the mileage of the truck and the wagon is still a "freshly done" project, yet I choose to drive this old soldier most often these days. I'm sure the manual trans. has something to do with it.

So, I figure I'd throw out a nice, harmless topic. Have you cars got their springtime cleaning yet? I've found some good deals on wax, so as soon as it warms up, they should get a nice wash and wax. I've already started cleaning up the inside, but I'm debating about either getting a carpet cleaner, or maybe letting the a place clean it for me. It's been a rough winter, and the cars are starting to show it.

C&D recently did a test on the rarest of 911's. Not a GTx, or "Insert Random Special Edition Here", or even the new R. No, the rarest 911 of all is a stripper model. A near-base, non-S C2 w/ a 7MT. Here's the story for those interested- C&D 911 Carrera Instrumented Test This car just conveniently happens to occupy a price bracket just above our previous entry, the M4 Comp Pkg. Base price is $90,450, as-tested was $96,650. We'll use a range of 90K up to 110K. I also apologize for taking it too personal; that was unacceptable and out of line. I do stand by what I said regarding the anti-American comments (yes, you make quite a few of them) because that's been building for a while, yet I still should have chosen my words a bit more carefully.

Want a Holden Ute? You're 20,000 Signatures Away by black-knight, C&G Editor/Reporter 15th November, 2011 Yes, you read the header right. The weeping and teeth-gnashing could very well come to an end if you've pined for the Australian counterpart for the much beloved and long departed ElCamino. The same goes for any other car that, due to some sort of general incompetence, wasn't offered here: Alfas, Fiats, Vauxhalls and Opels ... the list marches on. This possibility is made possible in part due to an online petition that is trying to change the grey-market import laws regarding cars and trucks, which currently state that no foreign automob…

So I call Comcast, which is like saying I called China, you end up talking with a bazillion people who don't talk to each other just to get a rough idea of what it takes to get service. So they send this guy out to "survey" the job - I hear nothing for days. Today, I get a letter via snail mail to tell me that these criminals want $875.00 just to run a few hundred feet of cable to my house! Then, they expect me to pay them at least another $50.00 per month for as long as I want service! Can you say "BITE ME"?

A lot of people do f*c*ing idiotic things while driving. Several bother me. At the top of my list is this: 1. DOG OR CAT IN YOUR LAP, BETWEEN YOU AND STEERING WHEEL Good Gawd, if you love your animal, that is the LAST place you would put them. In those classes you can take (at least in CA) to hide moving violations, they tell you this. In an accident, the animal doesn't have a chance and will be flattened. Next ones for me: 2. Reading a book, like a paperback novel 3. Make up application There are others, but these lead my list. What irks you?

I have an old orange pair of Reeboks that I wear biking and running. And I have four pairs of Chuck Taylors, a basic black pair that I wear to work on nights I close (they dont leave marks on the floor like my Skechers do) then I have a blue pair, a brown pair and a black and gold pair that I wear to class, out, etc. Wow, I own 6 pairs of shoes.

We all have regrets - in fact I think regret should be a four letter word - but I digress back to my original post about the one that got away. I am talking about the abused of the abused, the downtrodden, and the cars that we did not appreciate at the time, but wish we had them now. Maybe it was a car you never got to drive or own, but saw it slip away because it needed more than you were willing to give or did not have the money to own/fix. At about 6pm saturday night the Ute was travelling down a 50kmh zone (at an eyewitness estimated speed of between 150 and 200kmh). They have gone through one of Kalgoorlie's notorious spoon drains and launched into the air. Upon bouncing back to earth something broke and the driver lost control, jumped the curb and impacted the tree pictured. It has literally torn the ute in half , seperating fuel tank, rear firewall, tray, bumpers and tray liner. The owner of the ute is just 18 and hasn't had the car for long. He wasn't driving. An age unknown friend was, and witnesses say they both appeared to be drunk. Initial reports were that the owner was out of the ute yelling a…

I wish they still had key access as I had to climb over to unload my stuff I had loaded into the Escalade yesterday when I got home. Took it in and they gave me a new 2014 CTS4 2.0T to drive. Lower portion that opens and shows the hidden storage / charging bay was noisy. Surprised for a new auto with only 2500 miles on it. Rest of the leather, fit and finish was really nice. Pop quiz... 1) You come upon a toll booth. The lane is marked SunPass/exact change and there is no 'booth,' merely a basket for change, 25 cents to be exact. You... a) Stop, toss in correct change, proceed. b) Drive at reduced speed, listen to your transponder beep, proceed. c) Stop, toss in a dollar bill. Wait. When gate doesn't open, toss, in another dollar bill. Wait. When gate still doesn't open, honk furiously and yell for an attendant. When attendant walks up and points out its exact change only, returns your dollar bill, keeps one, and returns 75 cents (depositing the toll in the basket), you argue with him about why he only gave you back $1.75. 2) You come up…

I started thinking the other day, "What would the American auto industry be like today if Chrysler hadn't bought American Motors way back in '87?" Nowadays, the American economy could probably benefit from having a fourth automaker. Obviously AMC was in some deep crap twenty years ago, but as I've read, some analysts believe that the company would have turned itself around had it not been sold to Chrysler. The company had to continuously innovate to compete with the Big Three, plus they had Jeep...so what do you guys think would have happened to it by now?

But I can't seem to focus on the right things, either start slacking off on the net, playing games, or watching TV series on my computer. How do you keep yourself focused on work at hand??

Wrapping Christmas presents sucks. I'm terrible at it, everything looks bad, but I really dont care since its going to end up all over my living room floor anyways. My brilliant plan (which was rejected) was to put everyone's gifts in their own pile, put a blanket or tarp or something over each pile then let everyone pull the cover off to reveal all their gifts at once. But no, everything has to be wrapped individually. Buckets of Lincoln Logs and sleeping bags are really hard to wrap.

I want to know how not to be a dick when dealing with people selling used motorcycles. This is all private sales; no dealerships. The problem is that their price is often too high when Kelley Blue Book and mileage values are factored in. I'm reasonable but when you have bikes that are nearly ten years old, being priced as if they're three years old, that's either being obnoxious or showing no research whatsoever. So when I send an offer, I provide a link to the KBB website, as well as links to other classified ads in nearby cities of the same bike or one that's similar. Also, I've included links to sales threads on forums devoted to the particular bike brand or model. …

So few latest discussions gave me an idea for the following Dream/Reality garage: Pick the following cars that you would buy with YOUR own money if you were buying in the segment to be your daily driver: 1. compact car (sedan/hatch/wagon) 2. compact CUV/SUV 3. mid-size car 4. mid-size CUV/SUV 5. large car 6. large CUV/SUV

Can you identify what vehicle this gear shift is from? This is not a joke. It's from a friend's Facebook account. He says its not photoshopped other than colour and contrast tweaks (he's a pro photographer). Apparently it's from an abandoned vehicle, all he gave me so far is the location. I asked him for more info, I'll let you know. View full article

I’m using one of my “my site, my rules” tokens to say: Fuck off 2020! If you haven’t done so recently, please take this post as a reminder to check your fire extinguishers, buy more to keep around the house, and check all of your smoke alarms. I had a house fire today and it all happened in under 3 minutes. I saved my house but I got 2nd degree burns on my hands and spent the morning in the ER. A stray broken match head ignited my shower curtain and destroyed my bathroom. Albert had a robe hanging in there and it refused to stay out even after multiple hits with a fire extinguisher. I managed to grab it and fling it into the tub and finally got…

Why are there no kilts available at the Cheers & Gears Store? They are perfect for summer heat (plenty of air circulation), plus someone could recreate that iconic Marilyn Monroe shot of her standing over the air grate, trying to hold her skirt down. What more could anyone ask for?

Here's what I consider the top three mot important things I look for in a car. 1. RWD: If it's not RWD then AWD w/ most of the power going to the rear wheels. 2. Manual Transmission: Not a must but very strong preferance! 3. V8 or Inline-6: Short of an exotic motor like a V12 or V16 this is the only way to fly. That's it right there... RWD is most important but the other two I'll compromise on depending on the other redeming qualities of a car. Like a flat-6 Porsche motor would definately NOT turn me off to a 911, but an automatic trans. in a BMW is pretty much a deal killer. So what's the top three things you look for in a car? I left off styling because these days…

So I had a request to make these more difficult. So in an effort to do that, I'm creating one that will be different for everybody, but still be based off the same rules. It will span different amounts of time for different posters, so everyone will have different options available to them. Here's the rules- 1) You get to select ONE vehicle from 5 different points in your life. They are as follows... 2) You get one vehicle from your birth year. 3) You get one vehicle from the year when you turned 16. 4) You get one vehicle from the year when you turned 21. IF you are 30, OR older, you can choose one from the year you turned 25. 5) You get one vehi…

So a few hours ago I was flipping channels between Emeril's Moules a la Mariniere recipe (blegh) and SPEED's Forza Motorsport Challenge infomerical-cum-reality-show, when I happened to come across The O'Reilly Factor. Bill's sharp inward-pointed eyebrows and self-confident smirk just beckoned me to stay a bit longer. And so I did. As popular in these shows, there was a riveting headline. Today's was "Liberals Against Raising Fuel Economy Standards," which was accompanied by a montage of both Pontiac G6 and pump meter stock footage. First he lambasted American automobile manufactuers over an alleged refusal to reduce fuel consumption. To prove his point, he showed Ron Ge…

Ever get in one of those situations where all you can do is eat and you aren't "filling up?" So far I had an entire bag (put it in a skillet and cook it on the stovetop for like 20 minutes) of this "Garlic Chicken home skillet" stuff from the grocery store that's meant to serve two, a Little Debbie treat, a pudding cup, a bowl of oatmeal, a piece of cake, and a bowl of ice cream... Okay, so not much "nutritious" stuff, but still!

Situation 1: I'm at the gas station the other day and I see a guy walking towards me in a dark suit with a white shirt so the fact that his fly was open was pretty obvious. I kind of froze because I felt like I should tell him. I would want to be told if it were me, but I just couldn't do it. I was too embarrassed and I felt terrible about it. What would you do? Situation 2: This is a bit different, but kind of the same. I'm at the gym in the locker room getting changed and this older guy comes from the showers and is kind of near me drying off. He's pasty white and he's got his back to me. In the middle of his back, sticking out like a sore thumb is this disco…

I took my truck in to my selling dealer on July 9th for its first oil change and a warranty concern. Intermittently I had to fasten and refasten my seatbelt about 4 times to get the light in the dash to go out. Obviously, the problem was in the switch in the buckle. Here's how that went: The dealership is in a small town about 10 miles away. I was on vacation, so I waited and browsed the lot while they did their thing. A couple of customers (old guys retired) were hanging out bs ing with the techs in their bays while they worked. I was in and out, didn't want to crowd the tech working on my truck as I know they don't appreciate being watched by customers who may no…

...I'm not saying that you drive like an idiot, but everyone else in this state does. On the way down here yesterday I learned that most Iowans answer to a little ice on the interstate is to slam on thier brakes. Hopefully the ones who hit the ditch as a result learned a leason, but I doubt it. In downtown Des Moines last night, I was almost hit by three different vehicles. I'm going to give Des Moines the benefit of the doubt there since it was probably the alcohol is everyone's system down there that was doing the driving, but it didn't help to sway me to the side of the Iowans. Hope this doesn't affend anyone, Iowa is a nice state, just something I noticed. W…

Wed Aug 8, 1:13 AM ET WELLINGTON (Reuters) - A New Zealand couple is looking to call their newborn son Superman -- but only because their chosen name of 4Real has been rejected by the government registry. ADVERTISEMENT Pat and Sheena Wheaton say they will get around the decision by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages by officially naming their son Superman but referring to him as 4Real, the New Zealand Herald newspaper has reported. The Wheatons decided on the name after seeing the baby for the first time in an ultrasound scan and realising their baby was "for real". They decided 4Real was the best way to write it, but the name was rejected because the regi…

So, am I the only dreamer who goes to the "build & price" section of a manufacturer site just to work up an MSRP for a "vehicle of the moment"? I do it a lot. My two latest are a 2010 Colorado and a 2010 Patriot. Here's how they compare for each vehicle the way I'd want it equipped: 2010 Colorado 1LT regular cab 4X4 3.7L auto G80 rear end power/convenience pkg fullsize spare - $25,560 2010 Patriot Sport Pkg E 4X4 Freedom Drive II Off-Road Pkg CVT with crawl ratio Premium Sound Group - $25,260 Coincidentally they are exactly $300 apart. Which, if you were me, would you choose? And post your latest "build & price" results.

Fellow C&Gers: First, it can only be a GM car since I just hit $ 2,250 on the GM card and it cannot be a Saturn product since you can't redeem GM points for those cars. I also want to keep the MSRP to no more than $ 23,000 to $ 24,000 and deal down from there. Allow me to post some pros and cons of each model that I see: Buick LaCrosse CX 3800 Pros: - great reliability and all cast iron 3800 V6 - timeless syling Cons: - bland oval grille up front - ride and handling are so-so; it's quiet but it's not the morgue, either Chevrolet Monte Carlo LT 3.5 VVT Pros: - the most comfortable cabin set-up of the bunch; "boxier" bucket seats are great - killer g…

System of a Down will be performing a reunion tour beginning in May. It's about time. This gives me something to be excited about since everything else in my life is depressing at the moment. Not that any of the U.S. shows are close enough to personally attend, but perhaps they'll announce some east coast shows later in the year. Here's to hoping.

Well, since the crash I knew I was going to need to get a new car, its inevitable. Since the crash I've been driving around in a less than perfect 1992 Honda Accord LX 2-door 5-speed. I figured that as long as I had it I wouldn't need to make a rash decision on a new car and I'd be able to save some money up, put some money towards baby-related stuff and get my finances in order before deciding on how much and what I want. Well, last night the Accord lost second gear (it just grinds when I try to put it in second, makes driving interesting) and I dont have high hopes for the rest of the car. So I figured that I would take suggestions/comments from the peanut gallery b…
