I was driving home after work today when I saw an odd-looking car/truck waiting to pull out into traffic. In profile, it looked like a Holden Ute except shorter. It looked like it was from the 90s. As I drove by, I saw it had a Chevrolet badge with a ring around the bowtie. Anybody know what this could be? Something from a Latin American market?

Um OK I had a customer come in this afternoon with a Sable, saying someone backed into him in a parking lot. He needed an estimate. He said the hood wouldn't open. I was expecting a need to call for a rental car by his initial description. When I got out there, there was a tiny spot of black rubber residue on his right side fender from the Toyota SUV's tire that backed into him, no dent. I couldn't think of a reason why the hood would be affected from such miniscule contact, so I stood at the hood and asked the customer to pull the release while I pulled out every trick I could think of to persuade the hood to open. Nothing worked. I asked the customer to trade …

Well, I’ve had a busy last few weeks and you’ve probably noticed I haven’t been posting new news or regular commentary around here. Let’s get to the big news first. As of May 22nd, 2012 I am officially a Journalism major with an undetermined minor concentration. That means, in due time, all of the Moorish creases in my writing will be ironed out and the burrs filed down. It also means I’ll be an intern at some newspaper or magazine, possibly even a television station within two years time — that’s a requirement to graduate. It’s been unnecessarily difficult getting to this point and it’s required a lot of sacrifice, so hopefully it’ll be worth it. Also, a few days pri…

"Refinement does not equal longevity." Would you rather drive a purely silent appliance, or do you enjoy the feeling of machinery under you? I love to "throw the coal" to an entertaining mechanical symphony under the hood. Some people prefer to be far away from any hint of the oily bits. Which do you prefer? Why?

Well... it is good, I suppose, to learn where one's breaking point is. After tomorrow, I will have worked 30 of 31 days in January, only taking my B-day off {panicing; ocnblu scans his master list}. Some days were as light as 5 hrs, some as heavy as 11. Apparently, 29 days is about it, as I saw a few instances of failed processing & motor skills today, which is not good when you're a neurologic surgeon. Just kidding: I'm a contractor and have been working on interior renovation of a residential home. It's actually been enjoyable (nothing like being your own boss), tho the creeping brain fog of the past couple of days is a bit offsetting. One big plus: no pesky che…

WASHINGTON - Gasoline prices have jumped above $3 a gallon in some parts of California and Hawaii, and may hit that level in other parts of the country when the busy summer driving season approaches. “It kills me,” said Gloria Nunez, 53, as she filled her Ford Explorer SUV at a San Jose gas station. Nunez, a clerk for a communications company, has started working a couple hours of overtime each week to help soften the blow. “All of a sudden you kind of have to watch your pennies,” she said. Analysts say drivers should brace for more increases in the coming weeks. Crude oil, which makes up about half the price of gasoline, is trading above $60 a barrel. Higher demand, r…

CHICAGO - Julio and Mauricio Cabrera are gay brothers who are convinced their sexual orientation is as deeply rooted as their Mexican ancestry. They are among 1,000 pairs of gay brothers taking part in the largest study to date seeking genes that may influence whether people are gay. The Cabreras hope the findings will help silence critics who say homosexuality is an immoral choice. If fresh evidence is found suggesting genes are involved, perhaps homosexuality will be viewed as no different than other genetic traits like height and hair color, said Julio, a student at DePaul University in Chicago. Adds his brother, “I think it would help a lot of folks understand us b…

OK, which state has the most degreed population? Probably not a surpise. It's Massachusetts. 35.8 % of the adult population holds at least a bachelor's degree. (Heck, they have Harvard and MIT across the street from each other). In general, the most degreed areas are the Northeastern states. In the list are three outliers, somewhat Western, probably because of their progressive nature or yuppie appeal...these are Colorado, Washington and Minnesota. The least educated state is West Virginia, with 17 % of the adult population holding a degree. That's where Clarice from "Silence of the Lambs" is from. That's less than half that of Massachusetts. In general, th…

Sadly, like a lot of families, mine kind of split in two after my grandparents died. My uncle and aunt got the family farm in the estate settlement. This has been a source of deep friction ever since between my uncle and his sisters (one of which is my mom.) I lived there from 1971 to 1997. When I finally moved out, I left a lot of things where they lay. I haven't been back since. Until today. I called my uncle and asked if I could go visit and take some of my things. He said "sure", so I jumped in the truck and headed south. How can you go home again? Time that has passed came rushing back to shore, to deposit the seashells of my childhood. I picked them up, o…

I'm going to Lake Havasu this weekend, with the gf and her family... ... you are probably thinking "so what," and wondering why I would bother mentioning it... Well, they just bought a boat... the fastest boat I will probably ever ride in... It has a twin whipple charged 542 (I think that's the correct displacement), making 1300 hp! This thing is estimated to go 120 mph on the water! I just hope I don't piss my pants. I have never seen two superchargers, side by side, on one intake manifold... it's sweet!

To be exact, I bought this kayak. Not the best money can buy, sure, but the color does come close to matching the color of my bike, so thats something. It'll be a good one to get some experience on, since I've only kayaked a couple of times. I wont have a chance to get it out on the lake this weekend, but sometime during the week I am definitely going out, all I need is a paddle, already have a PFD and waterproof iPod holder.

It all started after I got back to work after going home for Christmas, my family lives in Detroit and I am a Coast Guard flight engineer in Kodiak Alaska. Well some one on one of my 6 (not joking) connecting flights gave me a cold. So 2 days after I got home the cold got bad so I went to go take some NyQuil, I poured 2 tablespoons into that plastic cup thingy and tried to drink it. Now is where the fun starts I have the NyQuil in my mouth and as luck would have it I cough unleashing a spray of red liquid out my nose all over my kitchen, it looked like I got shot in the back of the head. Then it got worse, I inhaled the rest on the NyQuil right into my lungs, so now im st…

In an attempt to actually start saving my money, I have been looking at a few online saving banks since they have much higher interest rates than what the traditional "brick-and-mortar" banks offer even on CDs. I've been looking at ING, Emigrant Direct and HSBC (which is currently offering a 6% APY on new accounts). Needless to say, HSBC is looking the best to me right now. Is anyone else using these? Any others and/or pros and cons I should know about?

In a heartfelt gesture, Mayor Bloombeg & the City of New York paid handsome tribute to General Motors, thanking them for their $10 Million spent (plus a fleet of support vehicles) in NYC & WDC immediately after the 9/11 attacks, by purchasing 40 hybrid sedans for use as both marked & unmarked police cars. "These new patrol cars will help fulfill the PlaNYC goal of reducing City government's carbon footprint," said Mayor Bloomberg. "We want to get the most mileage out of technology where it makes sense & with the addition of these hybrids, we're doing that literally," said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. Though the just over $1M spent on the hybrids d…

If, in your life, there is ever a time when you are in a hurry, in the second story of a house with old, worn out carpet on the stairs, and you feel the need to apply your haste to the speed that you walk down the stairs... don't. Pace yourself and be careful. Otherwise, you may slip and fall. Then, you'd end up with a sore ass, right leg, left arm, and chest. It won't be pleasant. I'm warning you, it won't. You may shake it off, shortly after it happens as you get up and continue doing what you were doing, but the pain/soreness will increase as time goes on. As you wake up the next day, you will wish you had not been in such a hurry for such a silly reason. You say "I ca…

Without voiding the warranty, what is the best way to check whether the engine is healthy, if no codes come back on the OBDII? Also, if there are signs of extremely fine sludge buildup (consistency of a clayey substance instead of a sandy material) at the bottom of the oil pan/sump is that considered normal wear and tear or initial stages of a bigger problem?

Here are six reasons why you should think before you speak - The last one is great! Have you ever spoken and wished that you could Immediately take the words back... Or that you could crawl into a hole? Here are the Testimonials of a few! people who did.... FIRST TESTIMONY: I walked into a hair salon with my husband and three kids in tow and asked loudly, 'How much do you charge for a shampoo and a blow job?' I turned around and walked back out and never went back. My husband didn't say a word... He knew better. SECOND TESTIMONY: I was at the golf store comparing different kinds of golf balls. My Jack-O-Lantern for 2008. I carved it last week, that way it should survive until Halloween. I even made a special tool by grinding down a baby-screw driver and filing it down into a saw. This year I gave Sofia an orange Sharpie marker and had her sketch out her own design on a pumpkin, after which I carved it with her pointing out the lines and giving me "artistic direction" the whole time. Kids are so much fun. Some days she makes me want to pull my hair out but overall she's a great little girl. Also, we went apple picking two weeks ago, including a hayride, petting zoo and all that fun stuff.

Nissan/Renault Alliance: GM Outgoing, FMC Incoming At least, it looks that way: Carlos Ghosn's Renault SA and Nissan Motor Co. may start talks with Ford Motor Co. as prospects fade for a link with General Motors Corp., two people with knowledge of the discussions said. Executives from the Renault-Nissan team and Ford have been in touch in the past month about exploring a possible link, according to the people, who asked not to be named because the proceedings are private. William Clay Ford Jr. initially called Ghosn in July to discuss a partnership if the GM-Ghosn talks led nowhere, three people familiar with the matter said last month. Read "Ford, Ghosn May Talk …

Ok, I was thinking a lot about this over this Labor Day weekend. While driving out of town, I stopped at a Ford dealership along I-5 to get a brochure. Interestingly enough, a salesman who had been a mechanic in dealership service departments since 1995 approached me. I explained I was NOT from the area and I was curious to see a new Taurus up close and get a brochure on both the Taurus and the Fusion. He was very courteous and understood I was on vacation, so he did not push at all. In fact, we talked for quite a while about car mechanics - the transition from cast iron to aluminum, the 3800, the Ford Duratech, electronic throttle control, variable valve timing an…

LONDON - The level of violence in Iraq is "much worse" than that of Lebanon's civil war, outgoing U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan said in an interview aired Monday. Speaking to the British Broadcasting Corp., Annan agreed that the average Iraqi's life is worse now than it was under Saddam Hussein and called the situation in the country "extremely dangerous." "Given the level of violence, the level of killing and bitterness and the way that forces are arranged against each other, a few years ago, when we had the strife in Lebanon and other places, we called that a civil war; this is much worse," Annan said. Last week, when asked by reporters whether the fighting in Ir…

I sure do miss my home state. I love the last line of this story! BLUE MOUND, Texas — When two gunmen smashed through the glass front door of her suburban Fort Worth home, Kellie Hoehn didn't think twice. The 34-year-old mother of two grabbed a shotgun that had been pointed at her face early Wednesday, starting a struggle that ended with one intruder killed with his own weapon and another in the hospital. "I wasn't going to let them get to my babies," she said, recalling the moment when she pushed up the muzzle of the shotgun, pointing it away from her children's rooms. Although the intruders told her to keep quiet, she screamed for her husband. She told her 12-y…

Last night I had a deusey of a dream. It all came back to me in the shower this morning. I was naked and walking, when I came upon a car dealership. It was made up of 3 lots, each with a small sales office. The cars were all non-descript, of different brands and model years, but it was a new car dealership (seemingly in decline). I entered one of the buildings. No one cared or acknowledged I was naked, and I was not embarrassed at all. It was dark, with a 1970's, dark brown pleather and chrome decor. I looked at racks of brochures, and left. Groups of cars were parked in patterns randomly on the lots, I was just browsing, when I came upon something that piqued m…

As we reported previously, the car nicknamed "the Quebec Bomb" employs carbon fiber construction and an 8.2-liter V8 to produce a high power-to-weight ratio driving from behind a three-passenger cabin with a center-line driving position, an innovative layout employed in the record-shattering McLaren F1 supercar (and in a 1966 Ferrari 365 P prototype), but not replicated since. Millions of drivers around the country use E-ZPass and other electronic toll collection systems to speed them on their daily drives, but consumers are discovering that there is a price to be paid for the convenience: loss of privacy, haggling between state systems, accidental fines. Now, add to that list the “orphan exit.” You probably know you should read your bills carefully every month looking for signs of fraud or overcharging by retailers. But if you're like most people, you probably don't do it anyway. Fortunately, Pennsylvania driver Kathy Suntato is that special consumer who keeps her magnifying glass nearby when scanning her bills. Sitxy8 was talking about the miniaturization (de-stroking) of engines being a "trend" that was supposed to continute into the '90s... Are there any other "trends" that the auto rags preached that you bought? What were they?

-What is this today that we face in America? Many sad things, Toyota Camry best selling car in America. Al Gore writing his bull$h! global warming book, Michael Moore making fun of America in his documentary... Some America, I'll say. Old farts trading beautiful LeSabres for Prius's, people selling Montana's and getting Corolla's in this day and age anything is possible. We face people so blinded by how great hybrids are, that they have there own list of enviormental problems, like dissposing of those acid filled batteries? When we get right down to it, cheese-burgers, apple-pie and Chevy are true American icons. Tree huggers try to make us "hate" th…

In this edition you will pick 5 cars born without a VIN. Can be anything from a Sand rail powered by an air cooled VW motor to a top fuel dragster. Most kit cars would qualify, as would most brass era cars from the early days of motoring. You could pick something interesting like a vintage group B rally car, or a modern NASCAR stock car. Home built specials, engineering prototypes, factory concept cars, the sky is the limit. MSO from kit car maker is not considered a VIN in this thread. Eyes without a face.....cars without a VIN....what 5 cars will you pick? Factory 5 type 65 coupe, car #1. http://www.factoryfive.com/kits/type-65-c…

I got up at 5, my usual time. Clouds were thickening at that point. Later, it began to sprinkle, and the rain has built in intensity all day. It's now windy, dank and thundering, with heavy rain. A perfect day to cuddle and look out the window, if you have a live person or life-like blowup doll with you. Has anyone else been affected by this storm?

Anyone else notice how we tend to associate certain smells with people and or places/things? Sometimes, those smells that smell good to us ... don't smell good to others ... and vice versa. Sometimes, the smell is equally displeasing or pleasing to everyone. Earlier today (Saturday), my sister noted how she loves the smell of her scarf ... because it smells like the home she and her husband own. I'm not so sure I agree with her assessment, but it is home to her.... For me, I associate newly-cut grass smells with awesome summers at home while I was a kid. I associate the smell of smoke with many bad experiences. And, of course, I love the smell of cars ... old and, …

Has anyone seen their new video? It's a cheeeeeezy ripoff of '80s metal band Sphincter... they are riding around in a 3rd gen Camaro at the beginning, with t-tops and rear glass removed so they can all jump around in the car and act like morons. Then they get to the concert, and there are more "white trash" metalheads outside. There is a 2nd gen Firebird, a '70s or '80s Silverado, and a '70s Corvette doing donuts. Also in this video is possibly the scariest woman I have ever seen, doing a "sexy" dance on the hood of a Fiero. Sorry about your eyes BV.

Before I start, I would like to thank Mr Cubical and Casa for reviving the other Would You Rather Thread with the Vette... And the others that answered it as well.... OK...so... Im at my son's baseball practice Saturday morning watching the kids pitch and catch and stuff when I hear a beautiful rumble from a distance coming from the parking lot. A black 1978 Camaro Z/28. l It was in rough condition, but still very driveable. Many little rust bubbles all around but the body seemed to be in decent shape. T-Tops and white interior. Like this except in black The V8 under the hood made glorious loping sounds...like this: The best I could find that was similar…

Well, it took quite awhile for all of the insurance stuff to finalize and for them to cut me a check but I got out of the shet rental Yaris and this past Saturday I picked up something. I would have played the guessing game but I'm pretty sure I've already posted here asking about the car so I didn't think that would work too well.. Well, I bought a 2016 Focus Hatch Titanium. I believe it has everything except a sunroof and their active parking assist. I bought it with 12,811 miles on the clock for 16,000 + TTL. Sync3 rocks so far. WORLDS better than Sync that I had in my Escape. It has basically everything I had in my Escape, which is what I wanted. A couple t…

I was pretty depressed about the Patriots losing in such an ugly manner yesterday, but the ending of the Colts-Steelers game was absolutely insane... Polamalu's reversed interception, Manning sacked, Bettis's fumble (why the hell didn't they kneel?!), Roethlisberger's game-saving tackle, Vanderjagt's missed FG... what a crazy game. Even though I hate the Steelers, I hate the Colts more and took joy in Manning's frustration and anger. Now I want the Steelers to beat Denver and then lose to Seattle.

Two weekends ago my foster uncle was in Tampa looking for a fifth wheel at the Tampa International RV show. He was really interested in a couple of RV's and is planning to make a purchase soon. In October 2008, he bought a brand new half ton pickup truck and has put less than 3,000 miles on it. Since he is considering to buy this fifth wheel, he wants a 1-ton, diesel, F350 and does not want to keep more than one truck in his fleet. During our conversation, he offered me his existing truck at almost 60% of the price he paid. The truck is a quad cab, with its most powerful engine, upgraded stereo, cloth seats, 4x4, and other goodies. Since it is a non-GM truck, my…

Lately I've been considering just what sort of serious vehicle purchase will come next for me. And by serious, I mean one that isn't a project or so old as to be impractical as a daily driver. At some point, I will need to replace the Tahoe and the ROPOS with a half-decent truck that I can plow with and use for all of the things I do workwise. But that can happen over time since the Tahoe now owes me some miles (and I like it). The vehicle I am considering will have to be better on fuel than the Tahoe (not hard to do), be a manual, and be something I can enjoy when I drive it. It will also have to be low-mileage and long trip worthy since I am way overdue for some goo…

http://www.forbes.com/sites/louiswoo...kruptcy-again/ From the article: President Obama is proud of his bailout of General Motors. That's good, because, if he wins a second term, he is probably going to have to bail GM out again. The company is once again losing market share, and it seems unable to develop products that are truly competitive in the U.S. market. Right now, the federal government owns 500,000,000 shares of GM, or about 26% of the company. It would need to get about $53.00/share for these to break even on the bailout, but the stock closed at only $20.21/share on Tuesday. This left the government holding $10.1 billion worth of stock, and sitting on an unr…

well my alero is getting on in years. Its been a great car (2001 gls loaded) It had 50k miles on it half of them are hard city miles and let me tell you new rochelle has the biggest potholes in the world. The car need new brakes again soon and the suspenshion basically needs to be replaced. Ive been debating for a while wheather I want to dump 2 grand into fixing a car that is nice but not worth all that much. I almost baught a G6 this summer but I really couldnt swing a 30 grand car which is about what the GTP i wanted cost. So I had this "I need to fix the alero soon or get a new car goal" on my back burner. So this past friday one of my friends …

At 1000 RPM, your engine is REVOLVING at 16.67 times per second. At 3000 RPM, we're looking at three times that, or 50 times per second. At 7000 RPM, we're speaking of 116.67 times per second. And those high-revving 12,000 RPM engines hit a completely outrageous 200 revolutions per second! Am I effing insane? Are these numbers completely off? I'm going crazy looking at these numbers. How the hell is that possible?! If you take into account that these engines are four-stroke, does that mean they're actually doing four times more rotations than they are revolutions? Or less?

Interesting thing today..... I was talking to a guy while standing in line at a Mcdonalds (nice long line). I noticed that he had a Silverado jacket on, so we talked cars.... Toward the end, he tells me he detailed his truck-even waxed the underbody.... Waxed the underbody? I might be able to see that if it is a serious off road truck, but it wasn't. I know I wash the underbody....but does anyone actually wax the bottom of their car?

Last night I was involved in a pretty bad accident. I lost control of my car after being cut off by another driver and ended up swerving off the road before hitting a telephone pole. I was with a friend of mine and luckily, she was fine. I was banged up a bit by the impact, but I'll be fine. The car (my IS), was totaled. I know how lucky I am to have walked away, but I can't seem to shake this depression it's put me in. It's the second accident in under 4 months that the car's been involved in, so insurance is a mess and I likely won't be able to replace the car anytime soon. I've had a rough year, so this latest incident just adds to everything.

Yesterday I went to Verizon since it was time to upgrade my phone again. I'm literate in many things, but not the latest and greatest in cell phones...so I went in relying on my sister of all things. I went in with no idea what I wanted and ended up getting a Motorola Droid. It's basically a less expensive iPhone with open source applications and Google functionality. I downloaded a bar code scanner, a metal detector, a guitar tuner, a USA Today widget, Pandora...you can even download a Tourette's Guy sound board. All Google functions like Google Maps, Google Finance, Picasa, YouTube, etc. work flawlessly and fast. I can even read up on the latest news from Cheers &…

As of yesterday, and not without additional issues, the CRX is back on the road after a lengthy hiatus. I finally bit the bullet and ordered a new radiator for it. After arrival, I spent a good half-a-day putting it in and removing the A/C components in the process. The latter was almost a necessary evil since some of it completely blocked removal of the radiator. Since the system will never be used under my watch anyways, I decided to gut the rest of it as well and in the process shave 50+ pounds from the CRX. Once everything was in and checked for leaks, I set off on its first drive in three months. Ten miles into said drive, the radiator cap bursts. Luckilly, I bought …
