Oops... I sort of forgot about this place until Drew sparked my memory. So yeah, I suppose an update is in order for those who don't follow me on Facebook. After Detroit, the $h! sort of hit the fan for my life. Finances became tight as I sought to pay down my debts (a.k.a. reduce the amount owned on my Avalon due to its not-so-sterling depreciation) and suddenly my job turned into a living hell. I managed to put up with it until the middle of summer when I finally had enough and quit. Needless to say, the experience has soured my views on ever working in a pharmacy again. Once I was out of that place, I had a gracious offer from a well-known friend to …

NOTES 1 ... This is a "woa, can ya believe so many years have past since...?" topic/thread. 2 ... I'm not even sure exactly WHY I'm sharing this, but maybe we'll find out.... Every now and then, an anniversary will hit, and, when you realize just how many years have gone by and what all has happened since that event, you pause for a moment ... and wonder just where has the time gone. Such is the case for me, December 27, 2007; because, 20 years ago, December 27, 1987, my original/then best friend, Josh, died of a severe asthma attack. It was a shock to me ... a shy guy who had FEW friends and was so NOT popular. Of course, as it most-often does, time has eased t…

So the running concept I have for my project involves a lot of facts about japn Inc. in refrnce to their less-than-perfect quality. This is the text I have for the poster so far: There is a Myth that Japanese vehicles are more reliable and superior to American vehicles. Did you know in 2006 Toyota recalled more cars than it sold? Did you know that the new Tundra’s 5.7L V8 has had exploding camshaft issues that result in catastrophic engine failure? Did you know the Tundra is the only pickup not to get a 5-star crash test rating? Or how about Honda’ recall of 2007 Civics because their wheel could potentially fall off? Perhaps Nissan’s recall of it’s 2.5L Altima due …

I went to a screening of this movie last week. I know most people are going to dismiss it as the "gay cowboy movie", and if you can't get past one short sex scene (which doesn't show anything), you won't like it- but Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway have nude scenes (and are quite fine), so it's something for everyone. This is a movie that makes me glad that I still on occasion work with actors. Everyone involved gives incredible performances. I never thought I'd say this, but Heath Ledger should get an Oscar. It's a great movie.

Yup, its November 21st and I am done. We took the wagon out and picked up the last of the stuff we needed from Toys "R" Us, then went and got some other nifty stuff and now the closet is full of toys and other fine wares. The best part? Everything is paid for.

Have you ever done it? If not, have you at least heard of it? I've been doing it since Monday... and damn it's awesome so far. I know I've only done three days of workouts (plus I'm watching what I eat like they suggest), but it's been great so far. My body is sore all over, and I'm getting real results. I'm really just doing this to get ripped and toned, and I think it's going to work. It's the only fitness program I've ever tried, other than lifting weights here and there... and so far I'm very impressed. I weighed myself Sunday night and the scale said 151.4 lbs. This morning I weighed in at 147.2, so that's a loss of 4.2 lbs in approximately 3.5 days, so a good 1.…

So unfortunately, I experienced an automobile accident last Friday at 4:50pm. My VW is totalled. Fortunately, I am okay. Anyway, I was on my way into work, headed east on State Road, going over the bridge that spans Interstate 69. As I crested the "hill" I saw a blue Toyota RAV4 (ironic, no?) roll up and stop at the white line at the end of Willowbrook Road. They looked left (towards me), looked right, rolled a bit more, so I lifted off the throttle and then the stopped again. Again, they looked left (and during all of this, I am travelling at 55mph and slightly reducing because of circumstances) but instead of staying put, they pull out waaay too late. The right fr…

Other than the Silverado, it looks like only old and cheap (but interesting) cars will be part of the fleet for a while. I've decided to get serious about selling off the Hawk, GTO and Maserati. I need to push a bunch of things forward and freeing up money will be required. It is really going to kill me to let the GTO go as I completely love the car, but it will put a little cash in my pocket and reduce my monthly costs a bit as well as insurance. I would like to put my plan of setting up to paint my own project cars into motion sooner rather than later which entails lots of little and not so little purchases. I'm less patient than I used to be and really want to get …

For my architecture independent project, I have been working on a site analysis model of downtown Des Moines. My project is a light rail transportation hub with retail and public space, and the site of the project is adjacent to the rail tracks running by downtown (in the image below, there are two surface parking lots next to two purple parking garages and a couple overpasses...those lots are where the hub will go). For those that have ever played SimCity, the color scheme should be pretty easy to recognize: Green = residential lofts / apartments / condos Blue = commercial office & retail Yellow = industrial / warehouses Orange = civic buildings, federal buildi…

Hello. My girlfriend is looking to replace her '99 Cavalier within the next month or two. At first she was thinking of getting a Cobalt, but within the last few days she has shifted over to the G6 (a little of the reasoning being the G6 comes with a dark green exterior color since she likes British Racing Green), but so far she's looking into getting a 4 cyl. sedan (which with all the options and so prices out near $19,000). From fellow G6 owners in here, I'm wondering if you have had any problems/complaints about it, as well as the positives of the G6. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'd like someone to design me a new Pontiac-themed signature that I'll display for a little while in honor of Pontiac's closure. I'm thinking something along the lines of a G8 GT and possibly a Solstice, as a tribute to the last two REAL Pontiacs. Anyone up to the challenge? If yes, post your designs here and I'll consider all that are offered to me. TIA

You like beer. I know you do. And your minions have been trying to lure me to the dark (and light) side for ages. While free beer at parties hasn't done it, perhaps a tour of Pennsylvania's beer industry has. I gathered a couple friends, we piled into an Infiniti QX56 and headed off to see the best of what Pennsylvania brews. Check out my article on "What Ales Ya" and let your friends know about some of the Keystone State's best breweries. http://automotivetraveler.com/jump/4401 What are your favorite (non-corporate) beers? Have you ever taken a brewery tour? Have you ever attended a beer tasting?

Ok, so I'm bored and thought this would be a fun thread. If you haven't figured it out already, in this thread you are to post the mods you would do to your car if you had the money. I'm going to do what I would do for $5k and then for $10k, I suppose you can do whatever you want, but it would be more fun if you put a couple price limits on your mods, IMO. Rt. 110 in Westford, Massachusetts. This is one of the biggest "cruise nights" in all of New England. Great selection of cars from the pre-war stuff to rare modern exotics. Once in a blue moon you even see a $ix digit "trailer queen" driven in or brass era car or truck. Here's just a few of the cars there last Thursday. I may post more later but this is just a sample. Howdy all C&G Forum fans, time to get the Sci-Fi debate on! So we have what has been well received as the official reboot of Star Trek. Characters that truly represent the original crew of the Enterprise and some kick ass entertaining movies. Officially original Spock has died and a solid tribute to him was done in the last movie. Sadly the actor playing Chekov died over the summer due to an accident with his jeep and pinning him down till he suffocated and died. So lets discuss where we think this story is going to go, take the easy way with refiliming the same story lines, new story lines, what? How will they deal with Chekov's death? Will they mark it as …

I can't wait for the backlash to hit on political correctness, but I don't think it's coming anytime soon. I tend NOT to be politically correct. It's a form of censorship. Europeans, for example, are nowhere near as politically correct. They stereotype their "neighbors" all the time. South Americans...they are even worse in this regard. I will say that I am diplomatic around clients and there are some that are fairly casual so you can be the same way - heck, some of our clients are salt-of-the-earth builders. At work, I tend to hang around people with whom I don't have to be politically correct. Socially, I prefer to be around people with whom I don't have to w…

A few months ago, I was browing the IL Secretary of State website and discovered that IL has a specialty license plate that features/celebrates Route 66. Since then, I've been considering switching to these plates on all 5 of my Monte Carlos. But, I haven't yet switched because of the increase cost of the plates [though, on the plus side of that, a portion of the fee supports the Illinois Route 66 Heritage Project]. I'm also not happy that the letter/number combinations are limited (i.e. 2 letters, 2 numbers ... or ... 3 letters, 1 number), and I haven't been able to come up with some good combinations.... However, thus far, I've only seen a handful (if that) of cars …

I've been following this a lot more recently and many medical professionals are voicing serious concerns that this flu epidemic isn't something we should take lightly. Some are estimating that as many as 300 million people could die and the flu could spread across the entire globe in a matter of weeks due to air travel. Here's a post I found on another message board: Here's a map of where the current flu outbreaks are. It's now starting to spread into Eastern Europe and I just read a report of an infected flamingo found in Kuwait, the first case of the virus in the Arabian Peninsula. Well, I guess I do now. With the Cobalt now done, I can enjoy being payment free....or maybe not. As I found out, there is going to be some kids in the family (adopted and born) on the wife's side. Since we all tend to help each other out (what family doesn't), this is calling for a bigger something. Her Cavalier is simply not going to cut it. (Though it' still a keeper) But I really don't want payments, but want a family hauler. I'd love a SUV (Trailblazer, Tahoe), but really need a (mini)van so that we can really be ready. Ya know… I’m not a big fan of Chrysler. Or Dodge. Or Plymouth. Or whatever the “F” they’re called or who owns them these days. It seems they’re always owned by somebody new. As if nobody wants to own them for too long. I’ve only owned one – and there’s a reason – it was an unreliable car (brand new Chrysler 300C) and the service was utter F’n unbelievable GARBAGE. Worst service I’d ever experienced. Even worse than Honda. And that’s saying something because Honda service is what you deserve if you’ve lived a life of sin and gone to Hell for it. All that being said, I have to say – I have a lot of respect for Dodge (I don’t know who owns them anymore because they keep…

We were going to spend 2 weeks in Plano, Texas where my parents live, however a friend of mine at Holden (yes I have one), has invited us to attend the Indy 300 at Gold Coast, Australia in October. I like their oven because in addition to temp settings, a timer, and toast darkness dials, there's a button to press for toasting, and it shuts off as soon as you open the door. So now I want one. The question is what to get? Browsing online shows lots of mixed reviews. For these things. It seems a lot of B&D products get bad reviews (catch fire, die, toast unevenly. etc.). Today I went to the dealership where I bought my '03 ION Quad Coupe to check out an Astra. The same lady who sold me that car went along for the ride, in a red 3-door manual with no options, priced at $18,400 or so. To sell for that price across town from other more-or-less Delta-based GM small cars, the Astra had to be loaded with "kit", as they say on The Continent, and it is. All of GM's latest safety equipment, including head curtains and Stabilitrak come on this car. Power equipment including central locking, mirrors and dual express-down windows are there as well. Handsome, 17" rims look good on the car, along with foglamps. This car has a lot of standard equ…

Of course everyone's seen my '68 Panther (Camaro) vanity plates. They read PANTHR since we're only allowed six characters here in Massachusetts. But I also collect License Plates from all over the world. I've got like 47 or 48 of the United States, in some cases dozens of one state and like 200 of Mass and NH each. This one I got off of eBay and it's hanging up on the wall in my house. Another 170 or so are haning up in my shed/garage. Most I got off eBay and some are as old as the 1920s. Anyone else collect plates?

That is the question. Clicky. Depending on his reserve, I could potentially get a set for somewhat cheap (atleast compared to the cost of a single wheel). With my desires to return to a VW, an aftermarket set could easily with switched to another vehicle. I'm not sure if a Jetta could rock Chevy wheels. Decisions, decisions...

Of course... The Beast wouldn't be the Beast if it weren't a pain in the ass. This past week, it suddenly became much, much, much louder. Somewhere near the catalytic converter, it's either rusted through or rusted off completely. I haven't had a chance to put it up on ramps to see for sure. Peaking under, I can't really see too much. Everything is still there, it seems, however. On a noise level, it's not as loud as it would be if you just cut off the exhaust, a la demolition derby car, but its loud enough that everthing that can rattle inside, does. As well, something that's been going on a bit longer, there's this rattling coming from the rolling gear, suspension…

http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/060424/japan_auto_...ction.html?.v=1 TOKYO (AP) -- Global production at four major Japanese automakers rose in March, but the country's second largest, Nissan Motor Co., reported a decline, the automakers said Monday. Well, I still love my car.....but damn if this isn't like ole' Murphy's Law...... I've written on here how very trouble free my CTS has been over 50K miles.....and it has with the exception of just a few minor items......my car has been a true testimonial for GM's recent reliability and durability strides..... BUT.....so my car has exactly 49,500 miles on it....and I had a couple minor issues I wanted to get taken care of before the 50K mile warranty expired.... (rear window wouldn't operate, bad, unusual static with AM stations....think there's a short in the system somewhere from the shark-fin antenna to the radio.....and a very minor exhaust noise that I've just …

... that a new El Camino is going to happen. Because of that, I think I have a new mission. By the time I can order one I want to be entirely debt-free and have enough on hand for a cash purchase . I know it isn't the "American way" but I'm tired as hell of finance charges and being tied to payments. In fact, I'd like to find a way to never borrow again. The way I see it, you are never really free when someone has you by the financial short hairs. I would like to be able to live wthout the burden of monthly payments needing to be paid no matter what unforseen cicumstances arise. Without that burden, any temporary crisis is just that: temporary. But, once you miss any m…

I have finally bought myself a decent laptop. After advertising $500 off throughout this holiday season (and receiving some holiday cash), I decided to bite the bullet and buy a Lenovo Y400. For $750, I got a 3rd gen Intel Core i7, 8GB of ram, 1TB of hard drive, and a NVIDIA GeForce GT650M graphics card. It also has a few luxuries I was looking for such as a backlit keyboard, decent speakers (JBL... though, I've never been impressed with any laptop's built in sound, so we'll see), and a metal cover. Here's to hoping it meets all my needs and wants once it arrives. I can't imagine it wouldn't, besides the twisted functionality of Windows 8, anyways. If you consider that I'…

(Excuse me in advance if I'm coming across as some kind of car hippie. :P ) Anybody ever wonder what would happen if every car company in the world combined to make one single company? GM, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Ford, DCX, Hyundai, etc. co-existing and living in harmony. Would it end pissing matches among car enthusiasts? Would the auto industry become less of a raging battlefield? Would it improve international relations? (This may be a stretch.) Share your thoughts.

I am smitten by the 2010 Mustang's sequential rear turn signals, but I have a question I hope some of our FoMoCo historians can answer: Which vintage Ford Motor Co. vehicles had that feature? I thought it was on the first-gen Cougars and maybe the Shelby Mustangs of the 60's... oooooooh, wait, was it on a Thunderbird as well? Help!

A maroon sedan - alloys, etc. Obviously very new, but with far too many barcodes. Yup. It was a rental. I attempted a picture with my cell phone camera that didn't come out well, but it was definitely a rental. My evidence: Four barcodes (two windshield, one on each quarter window) Hotel parking pass Hats and beach gear on the rear parcel shelf An Enterprise rental contract on the dash Just thought it was interesting.

Anyone watch this show? The finale was awsome. I loved the way they did the last few minutes of the last episode. Very moving. (oh boy I'm a super-dork) The only stupid thing was that Claire replaces her rolled Herse wiht a F$#%ING Prius. So contrived and lame! <_< If you're a fan of the show check out the website. A bit obsessive but cool nonetheless. Claire is so hot in a girl next door kind of way. NILF. ;) http://www.hbo.com/sixfeetunder/

Starting this off with my run I just made to Home Depot to get a few parts for my automatic water sprinkling system I am putting in. A brand-new, Paper window license plate only, Mercedes Blu Tec SUV parked next to my Escalade. WOW talk about Noisy with Clackity Clackity Clack and a weird diesel exhaust smell. Must be the Pee they use to clean up the toxic exhaust. Went in and got what I needed and on the way back to my auto, a brand new Ram Eco-Diesel. WOW, quiet, but talk about SMELLY! That did not have the diesel exhaust smell, but that nasty dirty inner City Alley way smell of urine. How do people drive a stinking truck like that. Then park across from …

http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentSe...id=970599119419 Remember the whiny, insecure kid in nursery school, the one who always thought everyone was out to get him, and was always running to the teacher with complaints? Chances are he grew up to be a conservative. At least, he did if he was one of 95 kids from the Berkeley area that social scientists have been tracking for the last 20 years. The confident, resilient, self-reliant kids mostly grew up to be liberals. The study from the Journal of Research Into Personality isn't going to make the UC Berkeley professor who published it any friends on the right. Similar conclusions a few years ago from another academic …

She got all fat, cranky and nauseous for NINE MONTHS just so you could pop out and bawl your little head off. Don't forget her special day this Sunday. Last week I drove my mom to Target to pick up a wedding gift for a relative. When we got out of the car, she looked at the fender of the car parked next to us and said "Look at that, it looks like somebody put sunglasses for a person with 3 eyes on that car." I said "That's a Buick Lucerne. Those are Buick portholes."

Can you figure this out? Although is it a very old video, I thought maybe we could have some fun with this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSLBtm__aKw Now the YouTube video is of lower quality (that's hard to manage) than the original which is hosted at TruTV's website. The original video makes a fairly significant difference in telling what exactly is going on. If you watch the original you can see that there is more chainlink fence to the right, unlike what some people have concluded: http://www.trutv.com/top5/2009/hot_pursuit/1-infamous-ghost-car-hot-pursuit.html Regardless of what we can actually conclude, creep yourself out with the following screen cap of the d…

I was in Northern Calif. over the past weekend. I was in San Francisco one day. It is truly a beautiful city, if not one of the most beautiful in the world. One day and I start to feel claustrophobic and, after being in Europe, it's less compact than those cities, with the ability to pull over to a meter or parking spot being quite common, other than in the Financial District or by Fisherman's Wharf. I think I would tolerate the suburbs (notably Walnut Creek) better. Still expensive, the prices have come down some as it had become truly absurd and stuff wasn't selling that easily. Berkeley absolutely makes my hair stand on its ends. Any liberal college town full of …

As reported in the National Post yesterday, http://www.financialpost.com/story.html?id=445465 : "The online science magazine Tomorrow's Discoveries, which specializes in breaking major science news before it actually happens, reports the discovery of the heaviest element yet known to science. The new element, Governmentium (Gv), has one neutron, 29 assisstant neutrons, some 100 deputy neutrons, and 222 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 352. These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons. Since governmentium has no electrons, it is inert; however, it…

I don't know how to describe how angry I became when I had to watch this ad (the batteries in my remote had died and, by the time I had decided to change the channels myself, it was already too late). Personally, I didn't want to be reminded of Black Friday. I didn't want to be reminded that Thanksgiving has become nothing more than a national holiday where people don't so much as cherish the opportunity to spend the day with their family and loved ones and instead just eat massive quantities of food so that they can muster up the strength to wait in line in front of a department store where they'll ultimately be trampled to death to buy some piece of $h! low-quality good…
