I am almost done with the 2010 Recount of my ad collection. Done to date: Chrysler (944), Ford (1347) and GM (3444) are done, and the independants are mostly sorted & awaiting counting (est: 350), then the dreary foreign ads will be the only thing left (est (200). That's a total of around 6300 ads. Yes, I'll get to those request in short order. I went thru maybe a 16-ft tall stack of National Geographics and de-bound them to get clean, full-sheet ads out. Those are all processed..... but being 'in the groove', I am eyeballing a 16-in stack of Motor Trends & C&Ds from '02-08. Lots of decent, performance-oriented ads there, and my post -say- 1990 ad count is pa…

http://www.craigslist.org/about/best/sea/1619190174.html Dear University Alumni Office, I'm sorry to hear that the university's $750 million endowment has fallen in value to $500 million because of the recession and because your bank died. I'm also sorry to hear that you're dealing with declining enrollment due to the fact that middle-class families are no longer willing or able to bet their homes on a $45,000-a-year higher education for their children. I really am. So, what I want to know is, why are you wasting money on glossy fundraising brochures full of meaningless synonyms for the word "Excellence"? And, why are you sending them to ME? Yes, I know that I got a ma…

At the beginning of the school year for my kids, my wife was talking to one of the district supervisors and was told that they don't have enough people to take care of the custodial positions within the district. I thought about that for a bit and decided to help out. The idea was that I would work as a substitute custodian doing the 4 hour evening shift and then head up north to work my normal 9 hour graveyard shift working on airplanes. It started out working pretty well, the district substitute coordinator had me working most everyday like that. Then, last week, she called me at home and asked me to work on of the 8 hour shifts at one of the schools. She was pretty…

Unbeknown to me until about half an hour ago, my dad apparently now owns a 1999 Buick LeSabre with 90,000 miles, red exterior and gray leather interior, pretty loaded. It was my mom telling me this so I have no idea what trim it is...she's supposed to be sending pictures soon. My dad had been driving a '92 Olds Eighty-Eight for about 10 years and apparently it has finally kicked the bucket at 180,000 miles. He's been having more problems with it over the last year, so it was probably time to go, sadly. It's too bad because we just repainted it a few years ago and the condition of the car's exterior is still in really good shape with no rust or dings. I wish he would'…

RE the recent '66 Impala discussion.... these seats recently sold on eBay. They were from a '61 Starfire, but (pattern aside) are correct for '59-60 also (of note; they have full metal backs). There were 5 pics, but you absolutely get the picture of their condition. No tricks. Without checking the link / eBay, what would you guess a pair of '59-61 GM buckets, in complete but worn shape, would go for?

So a while back, I posted that my mom was interested in buying a Saturn Outlook. However, my parents need something that can tow our trailer (Our Dakota does it, barely!). It's an Aerolite 26' that comes in around 4200 pounds. They've come to the conclusion that the Outlook won't fit the bill, and moved on to the next step. That step is either a Silverado/Sierra or Tahoe/Suburban. They've been cruising the internet to find deals on what will be left-over '07's. Part of the renewed look into a car is my fault. I am applying to college, and colleges look at how much equity you have, and if you have a car payment/mortgage/etc... your financial package usually incre…

This spring, America hit a historic point. With average gas prices per gallon edging toward $4, America's notoriously profligate ways started to change fast. Americans are driving less, using mass transit more, buying fewer gas guzzlers, indeed shopping less wantonly in general, and lowering their previously unshakable confidence as consumers. Suddenly, Americans are acting differently; if not exactly like Swedes, then not quite like themselves, either. It's a shift that could change the world. And there are more changes to come. So far the price shock has triggered the most obvious consumer shifts in the United States. Europeans, already greener, are also are buffered …

So I had some circa '71 GM seatbelt buckles laying around, left over from the Cutlass days (these didn't work because GM had changed the buckle/harness design in '72). Deciding not to let them go to waste, I decided it would be cool to put them to good use. After a few cigarettes, some glue and thread, and a cheap-o Dickies strap I had snagged for free later, I had this: Yeah, the pic sucks. Cut my 3GS some slack. Sure, Levy's makes a seat belt strap, but it's nowhere as cool as this. While Levy's claims that they use real, recycled buckles, you only have to take one look at their straps to see that it's obvious they're just blowing hot air. However, this is made from…

My new apartment faces the Cedar River and every day I have been watching the flooding going on around here. The road I take to work will be flooded over sometime Monday and apparently levels may reach those of the Flood of '93. Parts of downtown Des Moines are flooded and Iowa City is starting to sandbag. There are stretches of fields along rivers that have become huge lakes in Eastern Iowa. The good news is that after the Flood of '93, a lot of cities built earth berms along their rivers so hopefully if we have another 500 year flood it won't be so devastating.

What soundcard would you recommend for a 5.1 channel system? It does not matter whether it is PCI or PCI-E. I have read good reviews about Asus Xonar Essence XTX. but also have read that it is geared for headphones and some have experienced problems with 5.1 digital sound. Can a 5.1 channel system be "converted" to a 7.1 by adding two speakers?

The second is just a random pic of the road-salt covered Beast. That is what you call a pollution machine. Typed words are nothing when you can see it for yourself. Isn't the black smoke lovely? Leaves the snow looking lovely, as well. In other news, when I started it after to work to let it warm up something odd happened. Took the Venture on a road trip down to Washington State and would you believe it, after 50K Km, everything is going awry. In six days, the ABS, T/C have failed, the Tranny has started slipping and hesitating, and the starter is acting wonky... on top of that we lost three of those plastic wheel nut covers because, as it turns out, the lug nuts weren't tightened properly at the last tire rotation, last week. Making an appt at the dealer this week now that I'm back in Canukistan, but I don't know how extensive this repair is gonna be. How often DO we let the attitudes of others affect our mood? How many arguments/"flame wars" would be prevented if we stopped to THINK before we typed/posted or spoke? --- "The Law of the Garbage Truck." How often do you let other people's nonsense change your mood? Do you let a bad driver, rude waiter, curt boss, or an insensitive employee ruin your day? The mark of a successful person is how quickly she can get back her focus on what's important. Sixteen years ago I learned this lesson in the back of a New York City taxi cab. Here's what happened.... I hopped in a taxi, and we took off for Grand Central Station. We were driving in the right lane when, all of a …

Wow, I was just sitting here thinking. The last time I was car payment-free was for a few months in 1998. I had my '94 S-10 paid off for a few months before I bought my first '98 Bug. Once in a while I get a wild hair and think of dumping my newer vehicle and buying something I could just purchase outright... no payments. That's $324 per month, plus the savings in changing unsurance coverages, that could be used for something else. But, there are so many cool new toys out there now. Such is life, I guess, when you're obsessed with vehicles like I am. They make me irrational! Does anyone else here feel the same?

I find this to be one of the biggest travesties of our legal system where true justice couldn't be delivered because of fame, wealth, political correctness and "concessions" so as to not have tensions in LA erupt after the Rodney King verdict. I am in one of those deals right now. Bad service couldn't be taken care of locally, so rather than 'eff with it with a regional manager, I am taking it up with a name I found on the corporate web site for the NY-based headquarters. I have written about 7 or 8 of them in my life, and in about 3/4 of the cases, the "big bosses" rectify the situation in my favor. I'm not a TOTAL jerk. Need some tow hitch advice: I want to put a motorcycle carrier on the back of an Avalanche. The carrier is rated for a 600 lb bike and weighs 97 pounds itself. One of these: http://amzn.to/2x1Hkc0 The bike I want to put on there is 485 fully fueled for a total weight of 582 after adding the carrier. I know much is made about tongue weight when towing, but I'm not really towing in this case, it's really just a platform with a bike riding on it. Can I put this setup on an Avalanche with a 500 lbs max tongue weight? The max tongue weight with a weight distributing hitch (which is not possible in this scenario) is at least 800lbs depending on setup, so the meta…

RALEIGH , N.C. - Tammy Faye Messner, who as Tammy Faye Bakker helped her husband, Jim, build a multimillion-dollar evangelism empire and then watched it collapse in disgrace, has died. She was 65. Messner had battled colon cancer since 1996 that more recently spread to her lungs. She died peacefully Friday at her home near Kansas City, Mo., said Joe Spotts, her manager and booking agent. A family service was held Saturday in a private cemetery, where her ashes were interred, he said. Article continues: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19891663/

The other day I was out walking and something popped into my head about GM. Everyone says they have to many brands, including many within GM. I am not sure that they necessarily have to many brands as much as they have to many brands fighting for the same market. Perhaps GM needs to separate the brands more and going to the extreme as my mind often does I came up with the following to separate out the brands as best as they can be (albeit in a fantasy world): Chevrolet Core values: volume, affordability, practicality Core vehicles: FWD compact sedan/coupe, FWD midsize sedan/coupe, RWD volume large sedan Key competitors: Toyota, Honda, Ford...(other mainstream b…

A warm thank you to Walt for inviting me here at the start, and to all the moderators, members, contributors, artists, writers, staff members, advanced member members, as well as the trolls (for making me laugh). I have spent half of my time on the internet with Cheers and Gears, having gone online in 1996 (then it was mainly Buletin Boards known as BBS' on a 14.4 modem). It has been a privelage and an honour to see the site grow, change, and advance over the years. I would like to say that one of my very first posts then still holds true today! 5 years of spare time, hows that?

However, the owner never put it for sale, moved, and I hadn't seen it for the past year. Now it's on Craigslist, and I'm wondering if it's worthwhile checking out, because it'd be a bit of a drive. Last I saw it, it had surface rust, but to what extent escapes me. It's also a two speed auto, so it'll have a hard time keeping up with a Geo Metro. Has anyone had any experience with this powertrain, and if I were to check it out, is there anything I should be aware of in particular with this model? http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/cto/100…

It was quite the circus..walked around for about 6 hrs, spent an hour or so sitting down watching some of the actual auctioneering. A little something for everyone, mostly '60s-70s muscle cars (massive #s of Chevelles, '67-69 Camaros, Impalas, Bel-Airs). Many, many Mopies ('68-70 Road Runners, '70-72 Cudas, Challengers, '68-70 Chargers, etc). Lots of Mustangs (incl. 2 red '69 Boss 429s) and various Shelbys.. There were quite a few '50s-60s big cars as well..the usual '57 Bel Airs, Corvettes and Thunderbirds, along with a massive '57 Roadmaster conv..a couple '59 Buicks, '59 and '60 Olds, a couple '59 Pontiacs and 4 '61 Catalinas and Bonnevilles.... Some '70s a…

Well I took the Intrepid to Tom Manzi Dodge today to have the oil changed since it was about 100 miles before it wad due. The clerk/technician guy comes into the showroom where I am (ogling a 300C), and says they found an oil leak. Oh great, so it has one after all (if you remember from when I first got the car, the mechanic we normally go to looked at it and found oil on the engine but wasn't sure where and said he couldn't find out until they cleaned the engine...when it got warmer). Anyway, he brought me over to my car which was on the lift and showed me. As it turns out, the Oil Pressure Sending Switch is leaking oil. It's not a big leak, and not that expensive to fix…

NEW YORK - Jim Ammons grumbles to himself every time he fills up his Ford Expedition, but he says gas prices would have to almost quadruple to $10 a gallon before he’d ditch his SUV. Still, paying $55 to fill his 20 gallon tank isn’t easy for the information specialist. “This right here is catastrophic for a lot of families,” Ammons, 54, said this week at a Houston Chevron station that was charging $2.65 a gallon for regular unleaded. “A lot of them have to choose: Do I buy food, do I send my kids to school or do I fill up my tank?” That choice may soon get a lot more difficult. The steep rise in oil prices to $90 a barrel over the past month means American consumers a…

I went to look at cars today and I checked out the S10. Turns out it has a 350 V8, Edelbrock parts, 1997 Sonoma rims, updated gauges and it is a 93. It is $2800 and has fair bit of rust. it look to bit going to start rusting around the rear wheel well as I have seen that on many older S10s. The $2800 is pretty much paying for the engine and tranny and rims. The car needs new paint and is a little bit rusty on the rockers and frame. WOuld this be a good deal or would I negotiate lower. It needs paint pretty badly as it is actually purple. I like that it has the 350 though because I really wanted to put one in an S10. What do think and can the rust be fixed? I really like i…

Started up a forum for mountainboarders. The sport seems to be languishing, so I decided to step into the act. http://mtbforum.informe.com/ By the way, if anyone is good enough with a computer to make a half appealing logo, please shoot me a PM, as my art skills suck mightily.

... for driving domestic. I was talking to my friend yesterday, and he starts explaining how Chinese people should not be driving an American, and I should switch off from my Pontiac on my next car. He says it's a matter of reputation and it's destroying mine. sigh... This perception thing will never end.

Chevrolet Corvair pickups, 1961-1964 Story and photo by Bill Vance When General Motors introduced its Chevrolet Corvair compact car for 1960 to counter the rising foreign car invasion, it was clear that it had followed the general layout of the top selling import, the Volkswagen Beetle. Like the Beetle, the Corvair had a horizontally-opposed (flat) air cooled alloy engine located behind the rear axle, although the Corvair had six cylinders while the VW had four. Both the Beetle and the Corvair had independent suspension all around, the Corvair's via coil springs and the VW's with torsion bars. Since the Corvair so slavishly copied the VW car's configuration, it wa…

Another thread just reminded me of a really dumb question I got as part of a Popular Music elective. A listening question. They played a track from Metallica (can't remember which one, not a single). This is: a. The Rolling Stones b. Metallica c. Nirvana d. AC/DC That's probably the first time I've laughed out loud in an exam.

So, given how much fun we seem to have had with the other ultimate dream garage threads, I am going to start another one. Your Crazy uncle is offering to give you a Cadillac ATS brand new free and clear, but it must be the only performance car that you own. This will be a three part question. Part #1, Spec out your ATS and tell us about it! Part #two, you must pick 2 (only two) GM cars built between and including 1975 to 2004. The rub is, no performance vehicles allowed. Corvette is off the table, even if ti is the 305 cubic inch California emissions model. V8 Camaros and Firebirds are off the list with one exception. Fiero is excluded, as is say a Turbo…

Okay, so here's what happened today. During one of my preps, this woman brought up how much she HATED her car and would never buy another American car as long as she lived. She has a 2001 Alero, and has had nothing but problems (power window motors burning out of the rarely used back windows, power door locks burning out, radio malfunctions, etc.) The topic in the conference room just became what to buy, what would you get, blah blah blah. This is basically what the poll came out to just by hearing people's responses: What they said, "Most reliable to least reliable" 1) Japanese cars 2) German cars 3) Korean cars 4) American cars So, I interjected…

It's a song from the late 80s or early 90s IIRC, about a guy comparing his GF to a female praying mantis, referring to her predatory nature (FYI female praying mantises decapitate their mates during intercourse- yeah, you thought bleeding scratches on your back were bad! :o :P ). Here are some lyrics: "She bit off his head so he could not feel the pain. She wanted his body so much she ate his brain. But I survived, it was on TV She had 6 strong legs and it frightened me. She had insect eyes, but I could still see That the look she gave him you give to me. I feel like a praying mantis <something-something>..." Don't even know…

You gotta hand it to McCain, he doesn't do things half way. While Obama may have been paling around with washed up former terrorist funded by Republicans, , the head of McCain's transition team was a lobbyist (*gasp*) for a genocidal dictator.

I've been feeling kind of apathetic lately. My job is "just there." I live for the weekend when I can sleep in and then go out and do stuff or take a day trip. Right now, my trip to 2-week trip to Europe in early July is keeping me going. Why this sentiment? -Recession seems too prolonged -Friends have lost jobs and/or getting weirder with their own problems -Lost some money in my 401 that was in WAMU (not a lot, but still) - that bank has been a "staple," is at every major intersection, and made me my townhome loan in a Seattle suburb -Chrysler bankruptcy -Pontiac elimination -GM uncertainty Does it all seem like TOO much? How are you holding up?

OK, I put these in response to the post about Lincoln changing the Zephyr name to MKz and thought it would be fun to have everyone else add their own Lincoln model name and description of the car: OK, so I've created the new Lincoln line up: The Mark Harris - a car with no balls The Mark Hamill - It's really popular when it comes out, but then after a few years no one buys it. The Mark Twain - It only comes in white and a lot of kids are forced to like it, but have no idea why. The Mark Vincent - People never buy the gasoline version, it gets popular when Lincoln indroduces the diesel version The Mark Wahlberg - First introduced with standard hip-hop items l…

So I am shamelessly copying idea of Doug DeMuro from the Autotrader: What cars would you buy with the Super Bowl bonus? Winning team supposedly gets $107k, and the loosing team $53k. So: 1. What car/cars would you buy with $107k? 2. How would you spend $53k? Old or new, anything goes.

So it's about 4:45 this afternoon. I have work at 5 but we need to pick the Prizm up from the shop, we finally had the front tires replaced and front end alignment done. We turn off onto the main road (110). She's driving the Intrepid. We come to the left turn we need to take to get to the shop. This road, despite being fairly heavily used, is not particularly wide. There's a school bus at the end of the road wanted to turn right, and there's not enough room for us to get past, so she has her turn signal on and waits for someone to let us all go. After a minute someone flashes us to so that the bus can turn and we can go. As this is about to happen 2 cars from behind us g…
