William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com March 23, 2012 Yesterday, General Motors announced they will replace the 120-volt power cords on the majority of Chevrolet Volt models the company has sold since 2010. This comes four months after a report from Yahoo Autos said Volt owners were complaining about their power cords overheating and in a few cases melting. At the time GM said the cords were safe and said the issue was the wiring of the charging outlet. GM spokesman Randal Fox says the replacement, which GM doesn't consider a recall or a safety issue, was meant to as meant to "offer a more consistent charging experience." Owners will be notified of the swa…

Prototype of the Volt gets tryout The Chevrolet Volt concept has hit the road -- in Massachusetts, at least By Justin Hyde | July 15, 2007 | Link to Original Article @ Detroit Free Press David Vieau, the chief executive of battery maker A123 Systems, said during a congressional hearing Thursday that the company's employees recently had driven the Volt, General Motors Corp.'s attempt to regain an environmental mantle. A123 is one of the companies developing lithium-ion batteries for the Volt, which is designed to travel up to 40 miles on electricity alone and up to 640 miles on 12 gallons of gasoline. GM has said the Volt could arrive in dealerships within the next fiv…

Over the weekend, Chevrolet announced the pricing for the 2016 Volt before it goes on sale later this year. Pricing for new model will begin at $33,995 (includes a $825 destination charge). Chevrolet is quick to point out the 2016 Volt is almost $1,200 less that current Volt on sale. Add in Federal and State incentives and you could drive away with a Volt for as low as $24,995. Aside from the price cut, the 2016 Volt sees an increase in overall electric range (50 vs. 31 miles) and a improvement for the gas engine's fuel economy (41 MPG vs. 37 MPG). "The next generation Chevrolet Volt delivers more technology, the ability to drive further between gas fill ups and now wit…

Earlier this week, we introduced you the refreshed 2016 Holden Commodore lineup. Now one question that came up was if the Chevrolet SS - a rebadged version of the Commodore - would see any changes. Chevrolet has provided the answer with an announcement of an updated 2016 SS sedan. Changes for the 2016 SS are mostly cosmetic with new vertical ducts to improve aerodynamics and a set of LED lighting. Finishing off the exterior are a set of functional hood vents and nineteen-inch alloy wheels. The 6.2L V8 remains unchanged with 415 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. A new dual-mode exhaust comes as standard. "The 2016 SS design changes more fully express the tru…

Chevrolet is gearing up to launch its newest hybrid, the Mailbu Hybrid. When it goes on sale in the spring, it will carry a base price of $28,645 (includes a $875 destination charge). Now compared to the standard Malibu, the Hybrid is about $6,145 more. The Malibu Hybrid is also slightly more expensive than the Ford Fusion Hybrid (about $3,000) and Toyota Camry Hybrid (about $2,000). But the high price does mean a lot of equipment for the hybrid. Standard on all models is 10 airbags, cruise control, push-button start with passive entry, a 7-inch touchscreen with Chevrolet MyLink, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, and a backup camera. Power comes from a 1.…

The sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro has been lagging somewhat in sales when compared to the likes of the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger. Through July, Chevrolet only has moved 41,280 Camaros (down 2.5 percent). Compared to the Mustang which sold 50,814 (down 30 percent). The Challenger trails the Camaro but not by much - 41,243 units (up 2.6 percent). It gets worse when you compare it to last-generation Camaro. In 2015, the last year for the fifth-generation model, Chevrolet moved 77,502 models. A year later when the sixth-generation arrived, sales dropped to 72,705 models. To try and change the Camaro's fortunes, General Motors is considering making some chang…

Was driving the ol lady up to the airport (detriot metro) and was just crossing the MI/IN border on I-69 and came up behind a white SUV with some black tape in spots around it. No camo/bra's but they did have the "GMC" and "Yukon" logo's taped over. I actually recognized the rear tailights before I got up on it. So it was distinct. Thought it was a Tahoe at first until I passed it and saw the grill. I slowed down to let it pass back by me for another look (the g/f was getting pissed at me doing that LOL!). It looked good goind down the road. Looks visually wider than the current Yukon but is probably just an illusion. Proportions look great…

2012 Chevrolet Corvette Lineup See Their Prices Go Up William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com June 14, 2011 If you have your heart set on new 2012 Chevrolet Corvette, you might want to make sure you have enough money. Corvette Blogger recently went through GM's RPO for the 2012 Corvette and found out prices are going up. The MSRP for most Corvette models goes up anywhere from $480-$1,150. Only one model, the Corvette ZR1 sees a drop in it's MSRP. Yes, its only $75, but hey its still a drop. In addition, prices for the Equipment Group packages are on the up. The 2LT coupe will rise $1,195 to $2,095 while the 3LT coupe jumps from $4,205 to $5,9…

Chevrolet appears to have some big changes in store for the next Malibu as shown by some spy shots. A huge change is with the greenhouse as the mule gets a sleek roofline that slopes downward dramatically to a shorten rear end. The speculation is that Chevrolet is taking some ideas from Chrysler 200 and Ford Fusion to inject some European design into the next model. We can't tell much about the front aside from the fascia appearing to stay the same. There are mechanical changes in store as well. Chevrolet could drop the 2.5L four-cylinder for a smaller four-cylinder with a turbocharger to increase fuel economy. Source: Automobile Magazine William Maley is a staff writ…

The other day we reported that Chevrolet will be releasing an HD version of the Suburban for 2016 model year. Sorry to get your hopes up as we are now getting word that the HD will be built, but only for fleet buyers. Now that doesn't mean you'll be able to pick up a Suburban HD from National Car Rental during your family trip to Disney World, but if you are a fleet buyer for the US Secret Service or one of the Oil Fracking companies, you just may have a new tool available for your arsenal. We received official word today from a GM representative that the Suburban HD will only be available to Commercial and Government fleets. However he also referred to the Suburban HD a…

The problem with the previous spy shots of the mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette was you couldn't really tell what it was. The shots showed a blurry mule on GM's test track. For all we knew, it could have been bigfoot terrorizing GM employees. But finally, we have gotten the first clear and detailed shots of the mid-engine Corvette. It is clear this mule is mid-engined because of the proportions - short front and long rear end. There also appears to be some bits from the C7 such as the taillights. Other details are hidden by the heavy camouflage. Details on the mid-engine Corvette are very sketchy. As we have reported previously, the mid-engine Corvette could be sh…

Just wanted to throw a little tid bit on the 2005 Nextel Cup winner Tony Stewart. While yesterdayβs race was not a stellar one for Smoke, he did what he had to do to win it all, and with a much better attitude than 2002. Chevy also won the NASCAR manufacturers title in 2005. The βbooβ of the day goes to Dodge. Some Dodge teams actually brought the 2004 Intrepid bodies with them for the Homestead race since the flying brick-suckerfish of a Charger just wasnβt getting it done. And imagine if it was real stock car racing and you had to use the Chargerβs actual silhouette? http://www.nascar.com/2005/news/headlines/...d.ap/index.html (And yes, if it was real "…

Operation Cut $10k Out Of The Volt Is 'On Track' William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com April 14, 2011 Remember when there was news about GM CEO Dan Akerson asking engineers to cut $10,000 out of the Chevrolet Volt. Well it looks like its happening, but for the next and third generation Volts. Alan Taub, GM vice president for global research and development said in an interview at the SAE World Congress that GM is on track for cutting costs. "We have a cost reduction plan all the way through 2020 and Generation 3. In fact, we've been challenged by our new leadership team to pull those earlier in time, and we're on track to meet our new cost …

The hits just keep on coming for fans of the Chevy Camaro. Just yesterday, we quoted Bob Lutz as suggesting that the Camaro could get a four-cylinder engine option. Now we hear that Mark LaNeve, VP of sales and marketing for GM North America, says that, "We won't position it as a muscle car," speaking again of the 2010 Camaro. Sure, you could spend hours debating the terms "muscle car" and "pony car", but we're pretty sure that very few ever thought of the Camaro as a fuel-efficient option. But, that's exactly how GM will position it. "The mainstream positioning will be fuel economy, design and a V-6," says LaNeve. The truth seems to be that GM just cannot afford to sel…

Versa I may have the Rio and Accent mixed up, but anyways, if i do i will correct it. article is not online yet. Yaris makes a surprise showing. Sonic gains praise but barely still loses to Fit. Versa is trashed and new Korean twins are underwhelming. First showing out of the gate and the Sonic does well.

The next Camaro has a number of things that will be changing such as a new platform and a new place where it will be built. One item that doesn't appear to be changing as much is the design. Edmunds has learned from a source that the company is planning to go down the evolutionary route with the design of the next Camaro. "The difference between the existing and redesigned (Camaro) is not drastically different. It looks like a worked-over current-model Camaro. It is on a different platform, so that is a significant difference, but when they modified it to be on a different platform, the styling did not change that much," said the source. The Camaro is expected to debut…

The key problem with most electric vehicles is the lack of range. Currently, a number of electric vehicles only offer a range of under 120 miles. The general consensus is that for electric vehicles to take off, they would need at least 200 miles of range. Tesla made headlines earlier this year when it announced their upcoming entry-level model, the Model 3 would offer a range of 215 miles. But the Chevrolet Bolt, due out later this year will offer a longer range. This morning, Chevrolet announced the Bolt is rated by the EPA to deliver an estimated range of 238 miles. βWhile range is important, we knew Bolt EV owners would want more β more space and more power β …

I just saw a commercial for the Cobalt touting its "better than Honda Civic" fuel economy. This is misleading. They're taking the EPA rating of the manual Civic at 34 highway mpg and comparing it the the Cobalt XFE's 36 highway mpg while ignoring that the city rating is better for the Civic 26 vs 25 and the mix is the same at 29. Further, the automatic Civic has the same exact EPA ratings as the Cobalt XFE manual, a low-take option in the real world. Does "truth in advertising" mean anything to these ad people? GM, stop taking shortcuts and produce a higher mileage car. OR, compare what you've got to something that has less economy, e.g., the Focus (by one mpg).

Per a recent story on thestreet.com titled "Who Can Afford a Tesla, Ford or Chevy Electric Vehicle?" they state that the median salary of $51,480 before taxes for 2021 from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This would tend to imply that of the 2 million EVs that Ford and Chevrolet both say they will build and sell by 2026 is going to be hard as the current math for a 2022 Chevy Bolt with a starting price of $32,495 based on a 72 month loan with a $2,500 down payment would require an income of $72,000 a year and has you paying a monthly $452 payment. A Ford Mach E with a base price of $44,995 requires an income of $101,000 a year with a monthly payment of $606 on a…

So I have a friend who decided she wanted to buy a small SUV. After much convincing, I finally got her to *consider* test driving the Chevy Equinox...all her neighbors had convinced her she should buy either a Toyota RAV4 or a Subaru Forester. I check a few local Chevy dealers that have some Equinox's in stock and we set out to test drive. Dealer has 2 AWD Equinox LTZs in stock, V-6, full loaded, $37K. Both have *way* too much crap on them, but serve the purpose to sell the Equinox and provide a test drive. She likes it, but wants the gas mileage of the 4 cylinder...so we move on to test drive the CR-V, RAV4, Forester, etc. One weekend down. When all is said and don…

You know how there was a question of whether or not we'd ever see the Chevy Beat for sale in North America? The answer to that question is looking more like a big fat yes. Of course, a subcompact like the Beat makes perfect sense in a landscape where gas is selling for well over $4 a gallon in many areas. Our quasi-confirmation comes not from El Generalissimo, however, but from the set of Transformers 2, which was recently given its tagline: Revenge of the Fallen. In the photo above, next to Bumblebee, is the Chevy Beat -- partially covered, but the Beat nonetheless. You know what putting it in the movie does, right? It makes people want it. Older issues also had a bunch of pictures, technical articles, MC information, etc. The December 1987 issue included a picture of a blue '84 MCSS that was owned by someone i…

Think Australiaβs the king of the performance ute? Think again. South African tuning house LupiniPower is currently putting its Holden SS Ute-based Lupini Chevrolet SuperUte through an accelerated development and testing program, and word is itβs passing with flying colours. The standard Holden SS Ute gets 270kW and 530Nm out of its 6.0-litre V8 engine. For the SuperUte, Lupini has added a supercharger to make it more like the engine found in the Corvette ZR1. The result is a staggering 400kW of power and an almighty 785Nm (578lb/ft) of torque. The Corvette Fourm's member who posted these images cannot vouch for their authenticity, but the images seem to match up with past rumors. Starting with the rear end, the images show the new Corvette sharing some design cues from the 2009 Stingray concept. The images also reveal a set of quad tailpipes and uniquely styled taillights. Heading inside, the imag…

I don't understand why Chevrolet wouldn't get the solstice. It's more understandable that they wouldn't get the sky, since they're being sold to an outside company. But by GM doing away with Pontiac, it makes sense for other divisions to absorb the newer models of Pontiac, doesn't it?? My mother-in-law just bought a solstice gxp and mother of pearl does that thing haul butt!!! Wasn't that a Lutz deal?? He's a friggin' genius.

Inside Line: our Chevy Volt's battery miles cost more than the gas ones AutoBlog We often, though sometimes incorrectly, assume that it's cheaper to operate an electric vehicle than a comparable gasoline auto. Hey, who hasn't? While this assumption generally holds true, electrical rates vary widely across the nation and can throw off the numbers. In some instances, like when Inside Line's engineering editor, Jason Kavanagh, drove the Chevrolet Volt out in sunny California, one discovers that operating a vehicle powered by electricity can indeed cost more than running it with the liquid fuel that pours from a pump. Kavanagh explained how he discovered that operating a Vo…

The GMnext blog has a post up that talks about the potential viability of a low-displacement turbocharged motor -- the direct-injected 2.0L Ecotec turbo, specifically -- in upcoming GM cars, including the Camaro. Let's talk about this a little. The breathed-upon Ecotec delivers 260 horses and 260 lb-ft of torque, and if you've driven, say, the Sky or Solstice equipped with it, you know just how ballsy it really is. It's more powerful (but less torquey) than either V8 offered in the '87 IROC-Z that I thought was so cool back during high school. The turbo four might well be a nice solution in a future iteration of the Camaro, but is the fuel economy argument for it as rock …

Linkity The Z-28 - the Ultimate of the Camaros May Return If Luck, Cash, and Government Permit Highlights: LSA Engine That Breaths Life into the CTS-V Reworked Front Facia Fastest Chevy Modern Muscle Car Since the ZL-1 These are strange times at post-bailout GM. Having taken taxpayer money, the company is no longer master of its own destiny. It was bad enough when, late last year, new-model programs were halted to conserve dwindling cash reserves. Now, though, there's another thread running through GM's product planning process: not, should we build this vehicle, but is this a vehicle we should be seen to be building? The Camaro Z/28 is one o…

Well what do we have here? A new set of spy shots show off the next-generation Chevrolet Cruze without any camouflage - most likely due to the model being part of a photoshoot. The overall shape of the new Cruze is very striking and takes some ideas from the new Malibu and Volt with a rising beltline and sloping roof. Other details to take into consideration is a new design of the split grille, headlights, and flared out fenders. The new Cruze is expected to get the turbocharged 1.5L four-cylinder that was introduced in the Malibu earlier this year. A diesel and plug-in hybrid are rumored to be available as well. The Cruze is expected to debut at the LA Auto Show in N…

Hey all, I've been coming to the site a lot over the years but haven't had any real reason to post until now. I just saw a Chevrolet Lumina SS at lunch today. I got pictures and e-mailed them to FlyBrian. I was surprised since I have not seen any mention of this car anywhere. So hopefully FlyBrian can get those pictures up...they are crappy camera phone pictures, but they do show enough of the car that you can tell it is a rebadge. Perhaos they want to release it as a Chevy too since they are releasing the G8. -Bryan -------------------------------------- SPY SHOTS! Chevrolet Lumina SS

2007 Chevrolet HHR Panel LT Chevy puts an unserved niche in its crosshairs By KEVIN A. WILSON | Link to Original Review @ AutoWeek Thanks to Napoleon Bonaparte, England is often derided as βa nation of shopkeepers.β Weβd wager there are far more of them here, though. The American entrepreneurial spirit and the number of small-business owners leave one to wonder why itβs been decades since Detroit built a mass-market panel wagon like the new-for-2007 Chevrolet HHR Panel. When Chrysler showed a panel version of its PT Cruiser in concept form in 2000, we thought the time had come, but the Panel Cruiser never arrived except as an aftermarket treatment. And Chrysler even ha…

Back in the spring, we reported that Chevrolet and American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) would taking the Colorado ZR2 AEV concept shown at SEMA last November into production. It would be named Bison. Today, Chevrolet and AEV have unveiled the production Bison. Beginning with a base ZR2, the Bison swaps the front grille, adds a tougher front bumper with integrated winch, a rear bumper with recovery hook-ups, and a set of 17 x 8-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac off-road tires. Underneath, AEV designed five skid plates made out of Boron steel to protect various mechanical bits. The snorkel seen in the photos is available as an option. βAs this…

There was one main message hammered home during a conference call on the Voltec plug-in hybrid propulsion system that GM held earlier today: even though the Chevy Volt is not yet finished, GM is getting the second and third generation Voltec systems ready. Sure, the GM representatives reassured us that the company is on track for a late-2010 launch of the Chevy Volt, all of the mentions of the Gen 2 and Gen 3 Voltec systems made it clear that GM is readying some surprises in their various battery labs and partner locations. "We remain confident and committed to a November 2010 launch of the Chevy Volt." A timetable for Gen 2 and beyond is not public at this time, but …

Hot Tahoe fuels GM optimism Sales of revamped Chevy SUV were up 50% in January despite slump in large-truck segment. Brett Clanton / The Detroit News When the lease on his old Chevy Tahoe expired, Michael Wujczyk toyed with going in another direction. Maybe something smaller. Maybe a different brand. But when he saw the 2007 Tahoe, he stopped looking. "They just made some great changes to the truck," said the 52-year-old door distributor from Farmington Hills, who leased one of the new SUVs last month. Such praise has helped GM get off to a good start with the redesigned Tahoe -- the nation's top-selling large SUV and a critical piece of the automaker's comeback stra…

Did A Chevrolet Volt Cause A Garage Fire? William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com April 16, 2011 A Chevrolet Volt is under suspicion as the cause of a garage fire in Barkhamsted, Connecticut. The fire which engulfed a garage took 50 firefighters to put out. "I walked outside and looked in the garage door and it was flaming. I grabbed a pocketbook so I'd have a cellphone and a driver's license and a jacket and a pair of slacks. I had no shoes, my feet were freezing," said Dee Connors, owner. Investigators are now working on what caused the fire. Along with the Volt, investigators are also looking at the other electric vehicle in the garage …

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into the safety of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles after a Chevrolet Volt caught on fire after a crash test three weeks earlier. 2007 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ - 2nd Quarter Update Suburban takes on every challenge By WES RAYNAL AND BOB GRITZINGER | Link to Original Review @ AutoWeek If our long-term Chevrolet Suburban has taught us anything in its first six months in our hands, it is this: Sometimes you find yourself in situations that require hauling huge piles of gear or a boatload of people, or both. In those cases, the Suburban has no peer. Simple, no? For proof that the Suburban is one of the more useful vehicles on the planet (and the most requested in our fleet), consider that weβve put 17,043 miles on it in just six months. 2008 Chevrolet Malibu Road Test Chevy catches a wave back into the mid-size game. by Paul A. Eisenstein http://www.thecarconnection.com/contact/in...asp?AuthorID=59 (2007-11-02) Get out of the fast lane, Toyota Camry. Move aside, Honda Accord. For the first time in a generation, General Motors is back with a game-changing mid-size sedan. And the imports better be worried, when they see the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu pull up in their rearview mirror. There was a time when Detroit, GM, in particular, dominated the mid-size market, but that's so far back, many of today's buyers likely won't even remember anything but the more lackluster offerings that f…

I would just like some honest opinions on the new HD's. To me it seems like GM dropped the ball with these trucks. The half tons get a new frame and well everything, while the hd's keep the same frame with maybe a few mods. I know there are a lot of people out there that would like to see a straight axle on the front, I'm one of them. I know IFS rides better and is "strong" but its just not the same. It seems like every construction company or what ever where trucks get used hard all use ford or dodge. I believe the front end is a big player in that. Why would they keep it relativly unchanged? Now with ford and dodge getting new diesels it seems GM will have a har…

Chevrolet's littlest crossover, the Chevy Trax will launch in January 2015 with a base price of $20,995. Front-wheel-drive is standard and all-wheel-drive will be a $1,500 stand alone option on all trim levels. The Trax shares its platform with the already on sale Buick Encore and will likely share that vehicle's 5-star front and side crash test ratings. The only engine offered is the familiar 1.4 litre turbo unit producing 138 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque and EPA rated for 26 mpg city and 34mpg highway in front wheel drive models. EPA estimated fuel economy for the AWD model was not officially announced, but we expect it to be about the same or slightly better as the Bui…

http://www.automobilemag.com/news/porsche-pdk-shifts-slower-2017-chevrolet-camaro-zl1-automatic/ "When the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 hits showrooms later this year, itβll be the automakerβs first car to get the new ten-speed automatic, a transmission Chevy claims is so dialed in that it shifts faster than Porscheβs outstanding PDK dual-clutch gearbox. Chevy previously claimed its new ten-speed was a quick shifter during our ride-along in a Camaro ZL1 prototype earlier this year. Now Chevy has numbers to back it up. Based on Chevyβs own testing, the 2017 Camaro ZL1βs automatic shifts from 1st to 2nd gear 36 percent quicker than the Porsche PDK. The automaker claims th…
