Third Shift Being Added For Kappa Production

PONTIAC, Mich. - General Motors today announced plans to add a third shift of production at its Wilmington, Del., car assembly plant after the first of the year. The plant, which currently produces the Pontiac Solstice roadster, will begin building the Saturn Sky and a new Opel roadster in 2006. "By adding the third shift in January, we will increase the flow of Solstices to help fill the thousands of orders we have already received," said John Larson, general manager of Buick-Pontiac-GMC. Since first shown as a concept at the 2002 North American International Auto Show, the Pontiac Solstice has been a hit with both critics and customers. When orders were fir…

Same situation here.... couldn't post in the original. Original Post That front end is disgusting. Looks like the front grille is malformed and warped. Lose the wing, put the SEMA G6 sedan front. BTW, for some reason now I see a bit of 350Z in that angle.

G6 Convertible Canned? We've heard rumors about the G6 convertible not making it to production due to complexities concerning it's innovative retractable hardtop. It's been quite some time since we've heard anything in regards to this problem, and information about the G6 drop-top's debut has been in short supply as well. Now, Pontiac has removed the G6 convertible from it's website altogether. The model no longer appears alongside the coupe and sedan on the G6 page and it's picture on Pontiac's main page has been replaced by the image displayed above (showing only the coupe and sedan). GM's decision to remove the model from Pontiac.com (visited by thousands of cons…

2005 Holden (Opel) Tigra Convertible Launched (Australia) Text & Photos courtesy of General Motors Corporation 09-23-2005 Holden's New Tigra Hardtop Convertible Does It In Style Holden stepped up its focus on the small car market today with the launch of the Tigra hardtop convertible. The sporty two-seater roadster is the first hardtop convertible to represent the Holden brand and was crowned “Cabrio of the Year 2004” at the Geneva Motor Show. The versatile European import changes from coupe to open-top in just 18 seconds at the touch of a button as its retractable steel roof slips neatly into the boot. Bumping around a National rental lot today, I decided to sit in the backs of the G6 and GP sedans, to see if I was right about how I felt when I sat in one at a dealer. Turns out that, without moonrooves, the headroom back there actually ain't half bad. Same with the GP...I actually still had a harder time in the back of the new Impala, even without moonroof, than I did in the GP. So maybe it's simply that GM really needs to work on making their retractable rooves take less headroom. I don't know, I need to test that theory with a base STS....

Four years ago, Simon Cox, a British designer at General Motors, created the fabulously sexy Lightning concept car, which was unveiled at the 2002 Detroit motor show to rapturous applause. At the time, GM announced the slinky two-seater roadster would be made in both left and right-hand drive: in Europe it would become the Opel GT, replacing the Speedster; in the UK it would succeed the Vauxhall VX220; and across the Atlantic it would become the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky, two crucial niche products for a beleaguered GM. Three years later, the reality has proven to be somewhat different. First, the accountants started looking at the costs involved. To set up…

I took at look at the first Solstice I've seen at a local dealership here in California and was extremely disturbed by the cheap interior materials and poor fit as well as a really questionable color-combination inside..... The white Solstice was quite a looker. It's not often I think a sports-car looks good in white, but the Solstice looks extremely classy.....still much better of a looker than the new Miata. However, when examining the interior, I was really disturbed by what at first glance in mags appears to be a world-class interior, turned out to be a major example of cost-cutting of Lutz' SHARP interior design by Wagoner's bean-counters..... We thought we'd change things up a bit and release some official images of upcoming concept vehicles or "works in progress" as I like to call them. It's not known of this Pontiac G6 Coupe will come to market with the accessories being molded in clay below show, but either way, here's a look at what could be coming for the future of a performance G6. Subtle changes to the lower front facia and a more pronounced design of the side profile could be coming soon. We also have it on good word a new hood scoop/rear spoiler treatment may be on the way. But, we're just guessing on that one. http://www.cheersandgears.com/public/style_emoticons//AH-HA_wink.gif

Here is the Club racer that Pontiac is showing at SEMA this week. I am not sure but suspect much of this may be based on what we will see in some of the Pontiac supported racing programs for the Solstice. They have yet to anounce the engien but I suspect it will sport a Turbo. The looks are over the top but keep in mind it is like the C6R and much of it is base on a race car. The gold on the other hand must look better in person? If you look around the fog lights they used parts from the 07 turbo. I expect this to be part 07 turbo and many SPO body kit parts like the GTO kit they offer at the dealer.

I wonder if GM internally has a list of improvements for the next Solstice. I hope they have better interior materials on the list. Right now it's better than the Grand Am, but still not quite there yet. The fit and finish I think could be a bit better. At least try to hide the edge of the panels: It would be nice if they can move the tailpipe back to the middle of the bumper. Or if they make twin pipes standard, it would be nice as well. If they can engineer it as well, an automatic retracting spoiler. A coupe should be considered, unless they have something on to fill the void of the Sunfire left. Given the Cayman is out now, Pontiac might want something to go…

HOLDEN fans should forget about ever seeing another Australian-made Torana. That is the view of outgoing GM Holden executive director of sales and marketing, Ross McKenzie. "If you take the concept car the guys put together, it is a fantastic looking thing. But the cost of developing and building that car is the same cost as a VE Commodore. "There is maybe a little bit less steel in it, but if you look at the engineering and design costs you cannot make it cheaper (than a Commodore). "Yet the market expectation would be that it (a Torana) would be significantly cheaper." > Full Article

By Jamie LaReau Automotive News / October 24, 2005 DETROIT -- General Motors has big plans for the smallest truck in its Hummer lineup. GM intends to offer V-8 and diesel versions of the mid-sized H3 SUV. Two sources inside GM say the automaker is in the early stages of preparing to offer an H3 with a 5.3-liter V-8. "It's another couple of years out," said one source at GM, who asked to not be named. Hummer will add a diesel engine to the H3 later, the source said. The SUV comes with GM's Vortec 3500 3.5-liter inline five-cylinder engine, which delivers 220 hp. More: http://www.autonews.com/article.cms?articleId=55033

I just ordered a 2006 G6 GTP sedan in electric blue, with tan leather interior.. I drove an Impala, Cobalt SS, Equinox, the GTP and a CTS.. and came away impressed with all of them.. it was a very hard decision.. in the end it was neck and neck between the CTS and the GTP.. I really liked the CTS but couldnt justify spending about $6,000 more and over $100.00 a month more for the payment.

By Jamie LaReau Automotive News / October 10, 2005 DETROIT -- General Motors, like the rest of the industry, has seen SUV sales crash. But Hummer has managed to hit its launch targets for the mid-sized H3. Hummer sold 4,054 H3s in September and 18,290 since launching it in late May. Last year Susan Docherty, Hummer's general manager, projected about 25,000 H3 sales this year. The H3 has Hummer's in-your-face styling, but with a smaller size, decent fuel efficiency and a lower price, Docherty says. "Anything that was our Achilles heel in this brand has been addressed in the H3," Docherty told Automotive News. For example, the H3 ge…

I think I've gone over this in the old forums as well, but I was inspired the other day by talking to a dealer. The sales guy told me that you can order a 5-speed stick on the 3.5L V6. I was scratching my head for a moment there, but of course it turned out that the guy just wasn't listening in class... But makes me wonder: Is it a technical difficulty that they can't slap the stick shift on the base models? Can't they even at least put the Getrag 5-speed?

I don't think this was ever talked about by anyone... I know Americans seem to mostly think about acceleration and drag racing, and that top speed really can't be used many places.... But that didn't stop me yesterday from wondering what the fastest Pontiac has ever been....has Pontiac been building high-displacement monsters that aren't any good beyond 120 mph, or have there been production models known to do 150, 160, possibly even 180 with no sweat? On record, what is the fastest production Pontiac? Not the quickest (that's what E.T.'s and 0-60 are concerned with), but that FASTEST.... Has any Pontiac been known to have to be governed at 15…

Upfront. I didn't have nearly enough time with the new G6 when I drove it to really get a feel for its performance capabilities. I did, however, come out very impressed with some key qualities this character-ful car has to offer. Exterior This has been somewhat of a controversial issue around here and with people I've talked to. The G6 concept was a gorgeous design, and many here feel the translation to production has been less than stellar. Then comes the coupe, which, initially at least, was just as big a disappointment. As usual, the GM photography initially showed the worst angles of this car, and just did not do the overall shape justice. I think one…

I don't know, but I actually got to see two Solstices in person today. My friend pointed out to me the door panels, and the plastic they use. It is hard, and the touch is wierd. It's still better than the Cavalier's though. I see the edge of the door panel as well, and I mean the edge where the plastic piece was trimmed and moulded. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing it. I don't know what domestic bashing people will say about it.

EVIDENCE that General Motors’ large rear-wheel drive vehicle plans are back on track continues to emerge from the US, with GM last week announcing the appointment of a chief engineer for Holden’s Zeta global vehicle architecture program. Is GM like Ford, in which a division has the option to deviate away from what the rest of the company is using platformwise? Like when Ford USA stuck to using C170 out here instead of switching to the new Focus chassis used under the Mazda3 and Volvo S40....or Chevy never using the H-body, instead using the W-body for the Impala. My thought was that Pontiac should use worldwide partner Subaru's Legacy platform for the G6's replacement, if the Epsilon II doesn't get the promised AWD. But of course, unlike the Saab 9-2X's use of the WRX's whole body aft of the nose, Pontiac would style its own body, and maybe even be a bit bigger. Is there flexibilit…

That flew along the highway then the car came off of the paper and transformed into a 3D blueprint of the Sky (accompanied with a very nice engine note). It then becames encased in clay still running along and then the clay breaks apart to reveal the final gorgeous product. Then it zoomed forward to accompany the Aura and new VUE. And all of this was accompanied by some very cool background music. This is probably the best Saturn commerical of all time. Much better than that "dibs&qu…

http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?se...article_id=9964 Pontiac Grand Prix GXP Pontiac rewrites the front-drive-performance rulebook. BY TONY SWAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY AARON KILEY October 2005 Highs: Mellow V-8 rumble, plentiful V-8 torque, excellent road manners. Lows: Hints of torque steer, hefty curb weight, high steering effort at low speed. The Verdict: A cool idea that would have been even cooler a decade earlier. The obvious part of the formula is obviously far from new: Cram a big ol' V-8 in there, make the car go faster. Detroit has been doing this since the '60s. But what may not be so obvious is that there's a big asterisk to the …

Link: http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/jedlicka...e&src=reviewers Dan Jedlicka's Rating: 8 out of 10. Bottom Line: New, under-$20,000 genuine sports car is creating lots of excitement for General Motors' Pontiac performance division. Pros: Racy styling Decent acceleration Low price Cons: Little standard equipment Tiny trunk Likely price gouging Expert Review The fact that General Motors rather quickly has produced a 2006 production version of Pontiac's sexy 2002 Solstice auto show concept sports car is almost a miracle. GM has had a sad history of killing promising 2-seaters just when they got good. (Remember t…

I read about this way in the past, but have since forgotten. What was annual production of this plant supposed to be ? One of the recent Solstice topics said I was thinking this sounded low.

It doesn't look much different, but a quick play around the website and one will notice the difference.

Behemoth vs. Barbie Car: We hope our automotive future lies somewhere in between BOB GRITZINGER Posted Date: 9/16/05 When comparing distant ends of the automotive universe, it is hard to get further apart than the humongous Hummer H1 Alpha and the diminutive Smart ForTwo. If your neighborhood resembles southern Iraq you may want to opt for the H1, but if you are a commuter worrying about fuel prices nudging past $3 a gallon, the ForTwo starts looking darn intelligent. After spending a few days buzzing around in the latest H1, the 2006 model done up in Alpha trim, followed by a similar stint in a not-for-U.S.-sale ForTwo we borrowed from a local auto supplier, it is…

Scanning though the Pontiac page to drool over the G6, I spotted that they're using this as the catch phrase for the SV6: So they do admit that there's an appeareance problem with that van...

Automotive News / September 19, 2005 Well, that didn't take long. With demand far outstripping supply, the Pontiac Solstice, which went on sale in early August, typically fetches about $5,000 over sticker price on eBay, AutoTrader.com and at dealerships. That makes the new roadster the hottest Pontiac in years. One eBay bidder dropped $32,900 for one of the low-slung roadsters, which start at $19,995 and rise to $24,700 fully loaded. Some of the first 1,000 cars, which were sold to buyers through a promotion on the hit TV show "The Apprentice," are bringing an even bigger premium. One eBayer paid $10,000 for the right to buy c…

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drive...eline.promo.3.* Let the Sun Shine In By Dan Kahn Date posted: 09-15-2005 The sun is beating down, wind is whipping over a raked-back windshield, and our slinky steed is swallowing asphalt at one-and-a-half miles per minute. We're driving a 2006 Pontiac Solstice from Northern Oregon to Los Angeles in a single day, and life is good. After 1,000 miles, we can safely say that GM's sporty little roadster is a rolling grin machine. It's like one of those quarter-operated mechanical spaceships in front of the supermarket, only for grownups. And the best part: The fun starts for only $19,420, and a full…

By Jamie LaReau Automotive News / September 12, 2005 PORTLAND, Ore. - If you're a big-volume Pontiac dealer in a hot, sunny state, consider yourself lucky. If not, you might wait awhile to get the new Solstice roadster on your lot. With 13,000 orders in hand, Pontiac has devised a dealership allocation plan based on a combination of "turn and earn" and geography. Turn and earn means dealerships that have the highest sales volume for the past 12 months will get a Solstice before smaller dealerships, Chris Ayotte, Pontiac marketing manager for small cars, said at an event here last month. Pontiac also will consider where the roadster segment is…

First 1k Solstices Produced?
by Guest Josh- 6 replies

It is becoming more and more apparent that the first 1,000 2006 Pontiac Solstices are already produced or are nearing completion very quickly. As I frequent the SolsticeForums daily I can't help but wonder why the long delay in the first 1,000 orders have not been delivered. A quick glance today shows that orders from the 1XX still have no estimated time of delivery, however orders as far as 8XX have been delivered. One can only hope the first 1k have been produced and are either in transit or will be shortly. If I may sound a little greedy. I'm waiting on my black Sol so I can have enough driving time to enjoy it here in metro-Detroit. Any feedback from GM …

GM Holden Launches Dual-fuel Commodore Text courtesy of General Motors Corporation 09-12-2005 GM Holden’s 3.6 litre Alloytec V6 to run on petrol and LPG The success of Australia ’s most popular car range will be enhanced with the launch of a dual-fuel Commodore, featuring a newly-developed version of GM Holden’s 3.6 litre Alloytec V6. The engine is modified to run on petrol and LPG, using new valves and hardened valve seats designed for harsher LPG operating conditions. Based on the Executive variant, the LPG-powered Commodore uses a high-tech system called Sequential Vapour Gas Injection (SVGI), which injects gas directly into the air intake runner,…
