BMW has pulled the covers off the 2016 X1 crossover that will go on sale this fall in the U.S. While the X1 was sold in other markets since 2009, it only came to the U.S. in 2012. Lets talk about the elephant in the room. This is the first BMW to be sold in the U.S. to be based on the German automaker's UKL platform that underpins the new MINI Cooper and other BMW vehicles sold in Europe. BMW's vice-president of sales and marketing for the M division, Peter Quintus believes that manual and dual-clutch transmissions will be going the way of the dodo bird performance vehicles. According to Drive, Qunitus has been banging the drum on the demise of manual transmissions for a bit. The reason isn't due to emissions but comes down them not being able to handle engines with loads of torque - saying 600Nm of torque (about 442 lb-ft). BMW announced today their new flagship electrical SUV, the BMW iX. This SUV will launch late in 2021 as a 2022 model. The style will likely be controversial as it retains the concepts overly large kidney grill front end but maintains a sleek drag coefficient of 0.25 Cd which is equal to the Tesla X. BMW is very proud of their Spartanburg, South Carolina plant; currently home to the X3, X4, X5, and X6 crossovers. The 2019 BMW X7 has finally made its debut and its quite big, and I'm not talking about the grille. Parked next to the X5, the X7 is nine inches longer, making it the longest crossover BMW has sold. For the most part, BMW's designers didn't go too crazy with the design. The overall profile is similar to Mercedes' GLS-Class with a boxy profile and large glass area. A new report from Automotive News says BMW could be expanding their lineup of vehicles in both directions. On the low end is the 1-Series sedan. Already on sale in China, the model could be coming to U.S. in early 2019 according to a source. Whether we like it or not, crossovers print money for automakers and some are going above and beyond to make sure they get every last dollar. Case in point is BMW which unveiled the X2 which follows the same formula of the X4 and X6 by taking an existing model (the X1 in this case) and injecting a bit more sport. BMW is studying ways to give its performance M-Division special models not based on any current or former BMW. BMW has already apparently decided which class of car the models will be in, but will not reveal details on it just yet. Multiple concepts are being studied. It was thought that BMW would use the Paris Motor Show later this year to debut the production version of the X7 three-row crossover. BMW has revealed the 1-Series sedan today in China. This is the German automaker's belated answer to the likes of the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz CLA. BMW has only released one image of the new model, but we can tell the design is the same as the Concept Compact Sedan that debuted at last year's Guangzhou Auto Show. BMW has taken the wraps off the 2020 BMW 2-series Gran Coupe. It will come in two flavors, a 228 hp 228i Drive and a 301hp M235i xDrive. The 228i is powered by BMW's "B" modular engine family. It produces 228 horsepower from 5,000 rpm - 6,000 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque from 1,450 rpm to 4,500 rpm. BMW is committing to keeping their V12 in production until at least 2023 according to BMW Powertrain Executive Michael Bayer, and he thinks it will be possible to make the engine compliant with the next round of Euro emissions regulations. A new report from Car & Driver says BMW is working on a front-wheel drive roadster that could possibly come out in 2016 or 2017. Possibly named Z2, the rumored roadster will use BMW's new front-wheel drive platform that underpins the new MINI Cooper and upcoming BMW 2-Series Active Tourer. The focus will be on designing a lightweight roadster that could possibly weigh around 2,500 pounds. Unlike the Z4, the Z2 will use a fabric top. There have been some rumors floating around for the past couple of years that BMW was planning to offer a 3-Series with a fully electric powertrain. Google has been bringing veterans from the auto industry to help with their autonomous vehicle project. Tesla has been hiring people from Google and Apple to help with their vehicles. Our friends at KGP Photography have cracked off some excellent shots of what they believe is an early BMW X6 mule. Derived from the new X5, the new crossover will apparently weigh style over utility, with a more aggressively sloped roofline and steep windshield. For kicks, Car and Driver compared the Euro spec 330d turbo diesel to the 330i and full road test. They got 38 mpg combined and over 40 highway mpg at times. To top it off, it got 0-60 in 6.0 seconds and passing times were quicker than the gas version because of the monstrous torque. And yet, the USA and Califronia etc. tries to do everything they can to kill diesels. Just when we get 'clean diesel' now the regulations become like 10 times as hard to meet. Usually, an automaker will announce they are ending production of a certain model. BMW didn't do that when it stopped production of the 6-Series coupe back in February. Road & Track got confirmation about this change from a BMW spokesperson. No reason was given as to why production of the coupe ended, but it is a safe bet that low sales played a role in this decision. Within the next year and a half, a new BMW 3-Series will be revealed. There will be gas, diesel, hybrid, and the possibility of an all-electric version. Auto Express reports the German automaker is working on a 3-Series electric that will take on the upcoming Tesla Model 3. The next 3-Series will use BMW's CLAR (Cluster Architecture) which not only brings forth carbon fiber for certain parts of the vehicle, but it was designed with electric vehicles in mind. Last year, BMW used Monterey Car Week to show off the Z4 Concept. Today, the 2019 Z4 made its world debut at Pebble Beach. The design matches up with the concept, for better and worse. The front end reminds us oddly of the Fiat 124 Spider with a sculpted hood, large headlights, and expansive vents. A set of kidney grilles feature mesh inserts. MotorWeek tested the e39 M5 and said it was the greatest sport sedan of all time. At the end of July we told you that BMW was planning a slew of model cuts in an effort to save some cash. The first of those cuts has just arrived, for 2020, there will be no 3-Series GT, 6-Series GT, or 6-Series Gran Coupe.
