William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com March 13, 2012 If you been shopping for a Chevrolet Equinox or GMC Terrain with a four-cylinder and been wondering why there is a lack of them on dealer lots, blame a supplier. Automotive News reports that for the past two months, GM has put order limits on the four-cylinder Equinox and Terrain. That's due to a tier 2 supplier having problems with certain parts for the 2.4L four-cylinder engine. GM spokesman Jim Cain said dealers were told by GM the constraint on the four-cylinder is temporary, but didn't say when it would be resolved. So what do you do if you want an Equinox or a Terrain? If you're willing to give …

GM to widely incorporate Bluetooth by 2009 Link to Autoblog In a reader Q&A session at the GM FYI Blog, Phil Colley of GM Performance Parts responded to a question about GM's dearth of in-car Bluetooth offerings, saying that the General will soon undertake the "broadest rollout of Bluetooth in the industry," with the technology appearing in 30 vehicles across the GM range by MY '09. So, if you want Bluetooth in your new Chevy, you still have to wait a little longer, but at least you know the General's going to get with the program soon enough.

Rick Kranz Automotive News January 25, 2008 - 3:29 pm ET DETROIT -- The Canadian Auto Workers union local representing employees at General Motors' Oshawa, Ontario, assembly plant is threatening to strike this fall unless the automaker confirms additional products and jobs. CAW Local 222 warned GM on Thursday that the automaker is not living up to promises made in 2006 to build other models there besides the Chevrolet Camaro, the Toronto Star reported earlier today. The CAW's contract with GM expires Sept. 17. Camaro production begins in February 2009. Besides that car, the plant had been expected to assemble other new rear-wheel-drive models. This may go to Lutz as well depending on how many people respond, but first I'd just like to see what ideas everyone has for a flexible Kappa II architecture. I'd like to see: Pontiac: Solstice, and a vehicle with 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-door variants. 2.4L Ecotec with the 2.0L DIT optional. Buick: Possibly a sedan if it has a clear direction different than that of the Pontiac. 2.8L and 3.6L HF V6s Saturn: Sky, possibly a coupe a la the Curve but with different styling. 2.4L Ecotec and 2.0L DIT on Redline models. Chevy: Nomad, trucklet coming in under $15k (see Dodge M80). 2.4L and 2.0L DIT on SS. Cadillac: BLS, BLC (coupe + convert) 2.8L and 3.6L HF V6s with the V-…

Lets say GM gets $25,000,000,000 in taxpayer dollars as a bailout. What do they do with it thats any different than what they've been doing the last decade or so? It seems to me they're saying "Give us money or we die now" instead of presenting an "If you give us money, we'll do x,y and z in order to survive" argument.

TORONTO - The president of the Canadian Auto Workers union said Saturday that labor talks with General Motors Corp. have left him pessimistic and a strike could follow if things don't improve. CAW President Buzz Hargrove has set a strike deadline for Tuesday at midnight. "On the major issues that face us, we have made absolutely no progress at all," he said. Under the CAW's pattern bargaining with the three largest U.S. automakers, the union presses the other two to accept the same deal after it reaches financial terms with one company. A deal was reached first with the Canadian unit of Ford Motor Co. and matched by DaimlerChrysler AG's…

By Jason Stein Automotive News / September 05, 2005 http://www.autonews.com/article.cms?articleId=54370 DETROIT -- General Motors is moving quickly to realign its Buick-Pontiac-GMC retail channel, GM's top marketing executive says. Mark LaNeve, GM's vice president of vehicle sales, service and marketing in North America, last week told a group of Wall Street analysts that GM wants 80 percent of its Buick, Pontiac and GMC sales volume to be handled by one channel. "We've accelerated plans by two years to get there," LaNeve said. He did not disclose GM's time frame. As part of its restructuring plan in North America, GM has s…

Rick Wagoner's 31-year career may fall victim to the mistakes of the industry and of his own making, even if General Motors Corp. survives. The GM chief executive officer prompted scrutiny of his record by asking for a government bailout to keep the Detroit automaker in business. Now, his departure may be a necessary condition of any federal rescue, business leaders and lawmakers say. "Management needs to be replaced," said Robert Crandall, former chairman and CEO of American Airlines parent AMR Corp. "The fact is that the management as a whole has had lots of opportunities to fix this. They haven't." Mr. Wagoner has run the world's largest automaker for the past…

With Ram offering a small diesel and Ford announcing that next F-150 will be considerably lighter, GM is considering all options with their pickups to raise fuel economy. One of those options happens to be a 4.5L Diesel V8 that was planned to go into their pickups five years ago. Steve Kiefer, GM's vice president of global powertrain tells Automotive News that GM is considering dusting off that engine and slip it into their new trucks. "We are looking closely at diesel entrees in that segment. In fact, I heard the terms 'dust off' that 4½-liter at one point. That is certainly one of the options. Clearly, we have a portfolio of diesel engines," said Kiefer. Source: Auto…

It was a beautiful sunny day at GM's proving ground in Milford, Michigan in mid-May when GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz invited me to watch him test the E-Flex system behind the new Chevy Volt. Given the enthusiasm surrounding the Volt, I jumped at the opportunity. Would E-Flex deliver on the promise that's been built up surrounding GM's electric car? The answer: Yes. We taped Bob driving the Volt E-Flex system for our CNBC documentary "Saving GM" which airs tomorrow night. The Volt's "guts" were in a Chevy Malibu "mule" car for the Lutz run. We didn't care. We wanted to see for ourselves how the Volt's battery-powered engine ran. Lutz was only supposed to do a lap at the M…

What?? Isuzu Considering New U.S. Plant Japan’s truck maker Isuzu Motors Ltd. is considering building a new assembly plant for small trucks in the United States if sales volume doubles from the current level, company officials said. Isuzu President Yoshinori Ida disclosed the possibility during a press preview of its new truck in Yokohama, just east of Tokyo, according to company spokesman Yukio Hirano. Ida told reporters Isuzu may consider building a new assembly plant if sales of its small trucks in the North American market reach around 50,000. Last year, Isuzu sold a combined 25,000 small trucks in the U.S. and Canada, Hirano said. Detroit Free Press

Auto sales fall in March Only BMW posts gain; figures for rental cars, fleets should boost the domestics. Josee Valcourt / The Detroit News U.S. consumers bought 13 percent fewer new cars and trucks during the first 12 days of March, a disappointing sign for automakers as they enter the important spring selling season, according to a survey released Monday. J.D. Power and Associates' Power Information Network said every major automaker, aside from BMW AG, posted a decline in retail sales during the period. The survey tracks sales at more than 10,000 dealers nationwide and doesn't include sales to fleet customers. Detroit's automakers fared worse than their top compet…

Detroit's carmakers are raising discounts again to steer consumers back to showrooms after paring incentives in October and watching sales tumble. General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. added rebates of $500 to $1,000 on select 2005 and 2006 models. DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group added $1,000 cash rebates on most Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep products earlier this week. The latest moves reflect a softening market after a blockbuster summer, as well as consumer concerns over higher gas prices and rising energy costs. "Don't count on much of a rebound for November or December," Merrill Lynch analyst John Casesa said in a report th…

GM Rushes to Meet Huge Demand for Solstice Date Posted 11-03-2005 PONTIAC, Michigan — General Motors said it will hike production of the 2006 Pontiac Solstice by adding a third shift at its plant in Wilmington, Delaware. At least two sister cars are going into production next year at the Wilmington plant, and a fourth could be added in 2007, company sources told Inside Line. Even though deliveries to customers started just three months ago, Pontiac dealers can't keep up with demand for the Solstice, one of the few bright spots at GM. Pontiac has received more than 15,000 orders for the car, even though it had planned to build only 20,000 units in the first year…

General Motors Corp. will lay off about 500 contract employees, many of them engineers and designers at its technical center in Warren, on Friday as part of the automaker's effort to downsize its money-losing North American operations. "This is a very challenging time, and these are very difficult decisions for the company," said GM spokesman Robert Herta. "It's all about aligning the work force with our business needs." GM said the cuts are part of a previously announced plan to reduce its U.S. white collar work force by 7 percent in 2006. The reduction affects both direct GM and contract employees. Earlier today, GM revealed that it will end production of its Pontiac line, including the Vibe crossover. This is THE END. The auto industry is dead. Or just about. It's amazing the stories you hear about car manufacturers from where I sit, in an educated mid-Michigan community that is perfectly suited to retrain autoworkers into just about anything technical that is not auto-related. Governor Granholm was interviewed by the national media all week long, talking about how "the collapse of the auto industry would have a ripple effect throughout the nation." The entire Michigan congressional delegation -- Republicans, Democrats, Communists, Socilaists, all of 'em -- sent a joint letter to the legislative leaders and President Bush asking for help. WSJ - Saving Volvo and Saab One in every five cars sold in Sweden last year was a Volvo and Saab is the exclusive supplier to King Carl XVI Gustaf. So Sweden was never likely to abandon its two famous marques entirely to the mercies of parent companies Ford and General Motors. But while Thursday's promise of a 28 billion Swedish kronor ($3.44 billion) aid package offers Sweden's car-makers a lifeline, it may not be enough to ensure their long term survival. The Swedish car industry needs all the help it can get as the parent companies of Volvo and Saab look for a bailout. One in every five cars sold in Sweden last year was a Volvo. GM's New Full-sized SUVs: So Far, So Good By JAMIE LAREAU | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS AutoWeek | Published 02/06/06, 12:03 pm et DETROIT -- Initial indicators show that General Motors' high-stakes gamble to pull forward the launch of its new full-sized SUVs amid unstable gasoline prices might pay off. GM Cuts The Price On China's Top Selling Van William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com August 29, 2011 General Motors is cutting prices of their low-cost minivans by as much as 15% to help offset slow sales in China. The company has cut prices on a minibus it builds with Wuling called the Wuling Sunshine after seeing sales drop 3% during the past seven months in an otherwise growing market. The slide isn't GM's or Wuling's fault; the cause of the slide is due to a government incentive plan that encouraged sales of commercial vehicles expiring. Due to the plan expiring, commercial sales have seen a 7% drop. “The next 12 months look tough. Incent…

General Motors will be using Google Software for its embedded infotainment systems starting in 2021. This is in contrast to the Amazon Alexa capability found in some new Ford vehicles starting this year. The systems from GM will offer Google assistant, Google Maps, and certain other applications that are available in the Google Play app store in all of its brands except those in China. GM and other automakers have resisted demands by consumers for this type of software built in out of a fear of losing control of data and the possibility that the Silicon Valley brands eclipse their own. Consumer demand has forced the manufacturers’ hands however. Google will…

GM Puts Production Cuts For Pickups Under Consideration William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 5, 2011 General Motors is considering whether to cut production of their pickup to help lower their inventory. I would think that every poster on Cheers and Gears would want to read what President's Obama's auto task force found to be wrong with GM's viability plan. Here are the details from Jamie LaReau of Automotive News: President Barack Obama's auto task force says General Motors will be hard-pressed to meet its projections in five key areas without dramatically restructuring the company. In response to the viability plan GM submitted Feb. 17, the task force demanded that GM intensify its restructuring over the next 60 days or face possible bankruptcy. crusing lots today I saw the new 06 Grand Vitara. VERY NICE. Nice interior. Exterior is a nice chiseled shape. Whole vehicle seems well made. Cabin seems spacious, very sporty looking. Yes, that's the new GM 3 spoke steering wheel. Seat cloth seems nice. In fact, its the nicest Suzuki interior I've seen and the whole Grand Vitara makes the Equinox and Vue seem like regurgitated puke in terms of looks and quality appearance. A lot sportier looking than an Escape. Engine is a 2.7l v6...not sure what that's from. Pricing was good and warranty is always good with Suzuki. I know this should go with worldwide marques boards, but i thought it would get mo…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com June 18, 2013 In a effort to help out its struggling European operations, General Motors will further intertwine Opel/Vauxhall engineering efforts with Buick. "What we're trying to do is bring together the product development teams much more closely," said GM CEO Dan Akerson, so that "there will be all sorts of synergies, I believe, between Opel-Vauxhall and Buick." Currently, Buick sells three different Opel models in the U.S.: Encore (Opel Mokka), Regal (Opel Insignia), and Verano (Opel Astra). So what will this mean in the future? Well, expect more Opel products to arrive as Buicks in the coming years. Source: Au…

Article GM sees room to consolidate luxury dealerships Saturday February 9, 11:31 pm ET By Kevin Krolicki SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - General Motors Corp (NYSE:GM - News) will step up consolidation of dealerships handling its three luxury brands in a bid to shore up profitability, the automaker's chief executive said on Saturday. GM Chief Executive Rick Wagoner said the top U.S. automaker had made progress in helping to steer mergers of dealerships offering its Buick, Pontiac and GMC brands but needed to do the same now to restructure the retail network for its Cadillac, Hummer and Saab brands. "We want to run a little harder at our luxury side," Wagoner told re…

Blake Noble Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 3rd, 2012 At one point in the past, General Motors held a 49 percent stake in the Japanese automaker Isuzu. Over the years however, as GM’s market share eroded and the Detroit car company began fighting against the tides of red ink, it began selling off its shares in Isuzu until the alliance came quietly to an end. In 2006, it sold off its last 7.9 percent stake in the company for a reported $300 million dollars in order to fund restructuring efforts that were badly needed at the time. History is about to repeat itself then, as General Motors is reportedly in talks with Isuzu Motors to form a new alliance. This past…

This collaboration will involve Suzuki providing Nissan with minicars in Japan and Europe while Nissan gives Suzuki their Frontier midsize pickup to play with in the States. If you happen to be an owner of a General Motors vehicle and are looking to earn some cash, then a new pilot program might be of interest. Bloomberg has learned from sources that GM is planning to launch a program where owners can rent out their vehicles when they aren't driving them - think AirBnb for cars. This will be launch through GM's Maven car-sharing service sometime this summer. A GM spokesman declined to comment. This appears to be another part of GM's plan to transition from manufacturer to mobility provider. GM already has their car-sharing service Maven and invested $500 million into ride-hailing service Lyft. This idea of allowing owners to rent ou…

Today, General Motors announced that it will provide a loaner to any Chevrolet Volt owner concerned about the safety of their vehicle. The announcement comes a few days after NHTSA announced an investigation into the Chevrolet Volt's batteries after tests done by NHTSA have cause the batteries to catch on fire. GM says they will try to contact every Volt owner to attempt to clear up the confusion. GM has sold 5,329 Volts and each owner should receive a letter within the next few days. “We are contacting all Volt owners to assure them and reassure them the car is safe to drive. DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors (NYSE:GM - news) said on Friday that it was recalling nearly 106,000 sport utility vehicles in the United States and Canada to fix a rear door latch that may not close properly due to corrosion. AIG gives bonuses, General Motors hands out pink slips Via the Baltimore Examiner America…the land of opportunity. But not for all. The tale of two mega-companies, AIG and GM, their rise to behemoth proportions, and their simultaneous, yet very different, roads to demise, might one day be an epic saga for the US history books. Today, however, as we live through and witness the pain of the collapse of two iconic corporations, an all-too-common picture of the middle class in America, and ironically, its painfully similar demise, is also being painted. ...... Here is why I am utterly astounded by the latest headlines surrounding these companies: AIG has been ba…

From AN: Bradford Wernle DETROIT -- General Motors is calling off talks with Cerberus Capital Management LP about a possible acquisition of Chrysler LLC. GM CEO Rick Wagoner, without naming Chrysler specifically, confirmed the end of the negotiations during a conference call with journalists today. "We have recently explored the possibility of such an acquisition based on the analysis that it would strengthen our industry position in the long term," Wagoner said. "We've concluded at this particular time that we are better off to put 100 percent of our efforts on the liquidity side. We've set aside such (acquisition) actions as a near term priority." William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com February 22, 2012 Question: What do GM's European arm and Peugeot-Citroën have in common? The answer; both are in dire financial straits and are trying to turn their fortunes around. GM's European arm announced a $562 million loss in 2011. Meanwhile, Peugeot-Citroën's announced a loss of $121 million in 2011 and has cut 6,000 jobs. It seems fitting then that GM and Peugeot-Citroën are talking about an alliance. Reuters is reporting that the two are in talks about a possible alliance. The alliance would have Opel/Vauxhall and Peugeot-Citroën cooperating on projects ranging from developing engines and transmissions to c…

Yesterday, we brought forth some spy photos of a new GMC subcompact crossover. At the time, we couldn't be certain to this as the two mules caught were under a lot of camouflage. But today we are confident in this as a fresh set of spy photos have come in revealing next Buick Encore and Chevrolet Trax. Both of the mules seen in the photos were caught testing on General Motors' proving grounds outside of Detroit. The Encore appears to be taking the evolutionary approach with its redesign. There is still the rounded shape and rising glass on the rear doors. A similar grille design to the Regal is up front. Chevrolet is taking a more drastic approach with the next Trax.…

http://www.autoextremist.com/ December 12, 2008 It’s up to you Mr. President. By Peter M. De Lorenzo Detroit. The U.S. Senate late last night voted against passage of a bill to give an emergency bridge loan to the Detroit automakers – specifically GM and Chrysler - paving the way for the eventual collapse of the domestic automobile industry and sending this country’s already teetering financial situation to the brink of disaster. The inaction - a blatantly malicious display of placing political self-interests before the best interests of the nation – was orchestrated by Senators Richard Shelby (R-AL) and Mitch McConnell (R-KY), two men who are pushing “the Sout…

This just into C&G: Delphi is now in front of the Bankruptcy board and has made it their very first mention and note that they want new contract negotiations with the UAW to happen starting next week, with a new agreement coming to pass before the end of '06. General Motors would not say much, except Mr. Lutz stating that General Motors plans to produce 85% of their content in North America, however General Motors as a company were not the ones to mandate that, giving heavy speculation that it is the Unions job to meet wage concessions with the worlds #1 automaker. More into C&G as we get it!

The Mazda MX5 Miata has been the world’s top-selling entry-level two-seat roadster for 16 years now since it’s debut in 1989. The MX5 was the brainchild of Bob Hall, who is now working at Proton in product development. But the past two months have been different with the launch of GM’s new Pontiac Solstice roadster which had sales figures double of the newly redesigned 2006 Mazda MX5 Miata. Pontiac Solstice sales for December were 2746 units where the Miata’s was 1007. January’s sales figures were 1990 units compaed to the Miata’s 1067. Is this just a short burst of sales or will the Miata’s throne finally be toppled? Your thoughts? http://paultan.org/archives/2006/02/…

Auto Snow: Not So Fast, Comrade Kuttner! The shift lever falls readily to hand for one R. Kuttner, who road tests the Pontiac G6. He doesn't like the door-lock releases. Or the steering. Kuttner concludes the problem wiith GM isn't its workers--or unions--it's GM's incompetent designers and executives: You might blame GM's woes on poor American workmanship or the cost of American labor. But Japanese total labor costs are comparable, even with Detroit's higher health insurance costs. Increasingly, Japanese cars are being assembled in the USA, and the quality holds up just fine. So what's wrong with GM? The cars. GM is famous for being run by bean counters and ad men. T…

By Jason Stein Automotive News / September 05, 2005 http://www.autonews.com/article.cms?articleId=54388 DETROIT -- Fill 'er up? Maybe not. In some U.S. cities last week, regular unleaded gasoline was selling for $3.49 a gallon. That means filling a three-quarter-ton Chevrolet Suburban's 37.5-gallon tank cost a wallet-whopping $130.88, or $62 more than in January. Hurricane Katrina's short-term impact on fuel prices highlighted a worst-case scenario for Detroit's automakers: As gasoline prices rise, the product mix could shift away from big SUVs - and profits could shift with it. The timing is bad for General Motors, which …

When General Motors announced that it would be potentially selling its Lordstown plant to electric car start-up Workhorse Group Inc, there was a fair amount of head-scratching.
