While working on my Cavalier today, it got me thinking about what my next beater will be. It's always nice to have an extra car when you need it. (or you don't want to drive your nice car in the winter) Even though it could be a few years...I pulled myself a list of cars that I thought would be good for the job. 97+ Buick Century 95-00 Buick Lesabre 92-00 Buick regal I realize that they are all buicks, but they are all good cars, and most of the time are well taken care of... Any cars make a good beater/extra car? It could be for good gas milage, winter beater, or whatever reason...

Story Link By JIM IOVINO Updated 12:54 PM EDT, Thu, Jul 23, 2009 Erik Bonstrom considers himself a safe driver. So imagine his surprise when he was stopped along Route 50 Tuesday evening in Prince George's County, Md., -- for going too slow. "Coming back on Route 50, the speed limit is 55 and I was pulled over by a Maryland State trooper," Bonstrom said. "When I asked him why, he said I was going too slow and issued me an $80 ticket for going 58 in a 65." Bonstrom said he tried to reason with the trooper as passing cars whizzed by. "To me, you are punishing a safe driver and there are many cars that were passing me, and I guess it was just easier to pull me …

We all know how much consumer reports sucks at selecting their favorite cars. Well, I read their recent coffee article where they said 'eight o clock' coffee was the 'best'. I do know its the CHEAPEST. So, needing to conserve $$$$ lately, I bit, and in lieu of the starbucks....I got some of this crap. Tried it. EWEEEEEEEEE. How the FFFFFFKKKKK does this stuff win a comparo over starbucks and caribou? I end up blending the 8 o clock beans with some french roast starbucks i wasn't using, in order to get the stuff drinkable. OY. CONSUMER REPORTS IS USELESS!!!!

So.. I know what you're all thinking.. And I'm thinking the same. I love my Camaro, I really do. I love most everything about it. However, it's wearing on me and isn't as fresh as it was 2 years ago when I started driving, much less 6 years ago when we bought it. What's bugging me about it? Read on. Let's date back to when we bought this thang: almost exactly 6 years ago. Since the first day we had it in the garage, it has had a very slight oil leak. I'm talking about maybe one drip of oil on the garage floor after each time of taking it out for a drive. Not a big deal, no, but it does mean that my rear main is bad. But.. we fixed that with the engine rebuild, right? …

Five of the nine Supreme Court justices voted to overturn a 1937 ruling that limited corporate funding of political campaigns. This makes me very nervous. We have upended 60 years of campaign finance rules and have done a 180 back to the robber baron era of politics. Not only will this affect the national level, it could affect state and local level as well. Imagine the local Wal-Mart funding the election of a small town mayor if he promises to provide incentives and upgraded roads for a new store, or a major employer backing a candidate for governor if he promises to relax regulation. And not only that, but the more money you have, the more negative media you ca…

Today I wanted to scream, our family was getting ready to go to a family function about 45 min away, ma and pa wanted to pick up the papers, and I was in the shower. I told ma and pa they could take my car (2001 Aurora) to pick up the papers since I was driving anyway. About 10 min after they left, I'm getting out of the shower to hear the windshield wipers are acting strange. I quickly dress, go outside and check the car myself, when the wipers are in a intermittent setting they get stuck, when they are on low/hi they are fine except 1. they dont turn off when the lever is moved to the off position, when they do shut off with the car they automatically go up (as oppos…

Not sure if everyone has heard of this 'rule' so here's an explanation. The youngest age of person you should be going after (sexually) is half your age plus seven years. ie. I am 24. 1/2 of 24 is 12, plus 7 is 19. So 18 and lower is wrong. Then I have other friends who tell me that as long as everything is legal, what's the problem? Anyone 16 and up in Ontario is free game. So... if I refuse to have sex with a 16 year old girl, does that make me a chump or a decent human being?

I ask because I saw yet another one today - white, with chrome wheels - just cruising down to the beach. I pass it and just observe it as I do and I could shake the feeling I had that this was likely the single ugliest automobile I have ever seen on the road. Seriously. The rear is too tapered and contorted. The car is too tall and way too narrow for being so tall. And the headlamps are so small they look just plain stupid. I would say this looks like one of those cheesy Zimmer kitcars but some Zimmers look damn nice. Is something wrong with me? Linkity Running with the Big Dogs First Drive of 510hp Jaguar XFR Highlights: 5 liter supercharged V-8 with 510hp. 464 lb-feet torque. 14.9-inch disc brakes that do the stopping for a 4000+lb war machine. No mention of a car named CTS-V while comparing the cars with similar performance in the review. The 2010 Jaguar XFR sneaks up on you. You have to drive with one eye on the speedometer, cross-checking your perception of speed with the reality displayed in black, white and red. The XFR is not a raw-edged racing sedan; it's a supercharged 510-horsepower express that baits the BMW M5 with its sheer sophistication. The Jaguar XFR is a fast, b…

A used one, anyway - I haven't figured up savings and incentives on new vehicles. According to this article, the resale value of a Chevy Tahoe has dropped by 17% in the last year. Assuming the for-sale price of a used has dropped a similar amount, that extra money buys a lot of gas. A used Tahoe that was $40K last year, according to those numbers, would now cost $33,200. Let's compare that number to purchasing a Lexus RX400h. They're currently selling used for what a Tahoe would have cost last year, about $40K. The Tahoe gets about 17 combined city/highway MPG. The Lexus, 29 MPG combined. Let's say gas remains stable at $4.29/gal (a big assumption, I know). If you d…

For example, here's one of the first designs posted in the Member Showcase section for 2006 (that have image links that still work, anyway) by budding C&G designer, member, and Designer's Guild Founding Member, American_Revolution2005 (this actually predicted the 2008 Magnum refresh in many ways -- way to go, man). It will going without saying that Josh and a few others will predictably HATE this stuff. This era reminds me of everybody having a Cutlass Supreme coupe, bad clothes, Greg Brady hair and a much easier-going and more affordable LA. At work, I will put on the headphones and draft away to Donna Summer's greatest hits and similar stuff - MacArthur Park is her far and away her finest work, IMO. It's great to drive to as well and...no...I've NEVER set foot on a dance floor to this stuff. I know there's a lot of people who hate it. So be it.

Went to my local Chevrolet dealer trying to figure out if I could test drive a Sonic nRS...Ocnblu has me thinking... But Eve, the saleswoman I usually talk to, says that there are no Sonic RS's available within 600 miles. Is this thing special order only? Also, I would really like to own one, but am worried about a lot of instant negative equity as small cars usually depreciate like crazy, and this thing is a little pricey... Alright, simply put, there are some words in Italian that have the same meaning in English when translated, but have a secondary subtle underlying meaning. There are a couple of instances I've been unable to find rules for. An example of what I mean: questione domanda Both mean: question. Questione is a question or a topic brought up for discussion/debate/argument. Domanda is simply a question in general. spedire mandare Both mean: to send. What's the difference? differente diverse Both mean: different. What's the difference? Weird thing is, I can use them properly and somehow know which one goes where. But I do not know the rules. 4-1-07/ GM Headquarters: Today, Rick Wagoner has announced an unanomous decision to cancel all further production of the GMC Acadia. "With the Saturn Outlook and the upcoming Chevrolet Lambda (called "Criuse," just announced today) on the roads, and GMC being known for a tough-truck brand, it will be pulled from the production line." There is a rumor that a replacement, supposedly more rigid and GMC-like, according to insiders, is expected to debut at the Frankfurt show. Recalls for the Acadia are planned to start Tuesday, along with production halt. "The idea of pulling the Acadia off the market is probably a good idea, for GMC's sake and its reputation." Bob Lutz …

Here’s the fourth annual list of the best and worst of GM and C&G during the past year. If the year could be summed up in one word, it’s “disaster.” There were plenty of natural disasters, most notable being Katrina, and GM had its own disasters to wade through. Prominent passings included Johnny Carson, Rosa Parks, and the only Pope that many people knew. News regarding GM came at a steady drip—of bad news, including the Fiat fiasco, pension and health care woes, the Delphi mess, falling market share, junk bond status, and record low stock prices. C&G experienced its own woes with glitches the first seven months of the year, and then the site went offline al…

Well, it might be changing big time within the next 6 months or so. First, I've got a guy that's pretty interested in the Camaro (finally threw it in AutoTrader last week), so that should hopefully be gone soon, leaving space for another Camaro. A new addition to the driveway would be the '87-92 Camaro IROC 5.7L my dad's looking to find and rebuild. He's taking most of his bonus and splurging on a car when he finds one. Second, the lease on my mom's '05 4.7L Durango is up in June or so, and my parents are seriously considering getting an Acadia in the driveway. As I mentioned in the GMC forum, I took my parents up to the GMC dealer the other day and they loved the way…

I am really considering a new small GM car due to the tax write-off (a good idea from the White House) and want to help GM out again. I have been really considering the Aveo5/G3 (09 models only) and was wondering if I have gone crazy, going from a large ca…

Well, this makes my fourth consecutive year that I’ve been to the North American International Auto Show here in frigid Detroit, MI. Every year has been a lot of fun no matter when you go. The first three times I ended up going on the first Public Day as soon as the gates opened. This year, however, I was able to get tickets with some coworkers and got in on the first day of the Industry Preview. And let me tell you, depression is in the air. Fortunately, we walked in right by the Ford exhibit, which was about the same as most years, but spectacular by comparison to most other exhibits. If that doesn’t tell you something then there’s something wrong. The entire auto sho…

Last week, we get 15 inches of snow, this week, it's mostly 40s and beautiful out, the only problem is there are huge puddles everywhere from the snow melting, and in the morning it's dangerous walking to class because the sidewalks are covered in ice in some places. Tomorrow was supposed to be 55 a couple days ago, now we're getting a high of 38 with rain and high winds! Then, Sunday and Monday, we're getting rain/snow! Spring cannot come soon enough. I'm tired of winter, want to be able to wear a T-shirt and shorts, and want to be able to wash the car, which is somewhat dirty even though it just sits in the garage most of the time. Damn Mother Nature!

First off, how's everyone doing? I still hang around, but unfortunately don't participate anywhere near the levels I used to. I'm sure I wasn't the only car geek out there that wanted to turn my life's passion into a full-time career. I've been fortunate enough to be involved in this business for quite sometime and have obtained all my auto related positions due mostly to my sheer enthusiasm and understanding vehicles and of the market. Now's here you're chance. There is an opening to work with me (trust me, no big thrill hanging with me) as a forecast analyst for the North American market. If you're interested and preferably live in Michigan and have a strong des…

The story behind the choices... He has flip-flopped multiple times on what he wants. The choices are all ones he has mentioned. The truck was first choice, it's the beauty of the truck plus the stance of the 4x4 and the 6-bolt rims that were on the 4x4. My problem is the 4x4 part is useless in Oklahoma and the maintenance of a 4x4, plus here these trucks are still going for a premium, from $9-$12,000, depending on condition. I don't want one thats too rough. The civic because the ricer thing hasn't worn off here yet. All his buddies are running around in these damn things, but they're damn expensive for the same reasons. Anywhere from $3000 for one that hasn't been …

Okay, so the wife has gone from wanting a '08 CTS or Enclave (determined out of our price range), to a VUE or an Edge (fuel concerns) to now wanting a small, fuel-efficient (plus cheap!) 4- or 5-door car. Why the change? Realizing that it cost us $50 to fill up the AURA and $65 to fill up the Envoy last Friday, she wants to get something more affordable and, more importantly, will aid in saving additional $$$ in our bank account and not spent at the gas station. We just recently test-drove the all-new 2009 Pontiac Vibe GT FWD and she likes that a lot. The Cobalt, HHR, and Astra are off her radar, and while she likes the Malibu, shewants to spend around $20-21K MSRP…

SO heres the story, about a month ago the alternator in my Riviera bit the dust and I had my car brought to a local repair shop which was said to be a good place according to my girlfriend's neighbors....so I figured hell while they have the car, might as well do an inspection, oil change and tranny flush. $655 later, I had my car back, with a new alternator, new belts, tranny service, oil change and inspection sticker.... about 5 minutes after pulling away I notice my car dosen't seem to be right, so I thought well maybe the tranny service really changed the driving dynamics of this car anyway by that night I noticed my lights, both inside the car and my headlights we…

Hello All, So since there is no generic section in the 2012 autoshow section, I am posting my pictures here allong with my take of the autoshow. First off let me start by saying the Seattle Autoshow is about 1/3 smaller than it has been in the past. It was really a shock to see almost no 3rd party auto vendors or alternative nicnack vendors. I arrived excited to check out 2 auto's I was told by local dealers would be there. Honda CNG Civic GX and a GM Bi-Fuel CNG truck. Sadly both were a no show. Course I was hoping to stand around and do free selling of the auto's while handing out business cards for CNG appliances for home fueling. None of it happened. New to the Sea…

[source: MSN] 'Missing link' primate likely to stir debate Scientists announce 47 million-year-old find amid media hoopla A discovery of a 47 million-year-old fossil primate that is said to be a human ancestor was announced and unveiled Tuesday at a press conference in New York City. Known as "Ida," the nearly complete transitional fossil is 20 times older than most fossils that provide evidence for human evolution. It shows characteristics from the very primitive non-human evolutionary line (prosimians, such as lemurs), but is more related to the human evolutionary line (anthropoids, such as monkeys, apes and humans), s…

Is there any way to safely wash your car in the winter? I washed my car (05 Cobalt) the other day and then parked at a bar. (no I don't drink and drive) I came out a few hours later and had a lot of trouble getting the car moving out of the spot. Couldn't figure out what was going on. Turns out the parking brake was frozen on. The lever went down, but one of the wheels was stopped and sliding around on the ice in the parking lot. Had to have it towed to a GM garage, where they fixed it as a "warranty issue". So the question that comes from all this is: Is there any safe way to wash your car in the winter and not freeze things like the doors and parking…

WASHINGTON - Chrysler LLC said Friday it would recall nearly 300,000 sport utility vehicles to address potential braking problems while driving uphill. In a separate move, Honda Motor Co. said it was recalling more than 180,000 Civics from the 2006-2007 model year to fix a wheel-bearing seal that could leak and lead to a wheel falling off the car. http://editorial.autos.msn.com/slideshow.a...amp;GT1=22008#1 Hot Wheels: America's 10 Most Stolen Cars By James Tate of MSN Autos It's a car owner's worst nightmare: stepping outside at home, office or grocery store only to find a pile of broken glass where the car was once parked. The police call it auto theft. We call it a pain in the . . . well, you know what. A car is stolen every 26 seconds in the United States, costing the American public nearly $7.6 billion each year. And if the National Insurance Crime Bureau's list of the most frequently stolen cars of 2008 is any indication, auto theft can happen to anyone. While it's no surprise that some cars are more li…

So the Tablet craze got me thinking, Ford has their whole Sync world with USB upgrades. GM has their version coming out MyLink, they have also their Android App to help you better interface with the VOLT. So with this in mind, what would it take to have an Auto maker decide to just have a 10" tablet holder in the center dash with a USB port. Just plug in your tablet and have say suction cups that hold it in place and boom. Up comes an interface allowing you to totally manage everything in your car. This way depending on how you interface to the world, via Apple, Windows, Linux, you have a nice to use interface and the abilityto customize it. I see this as reducing the c…

Hey, have you ever been driving down the freeway on a road trip of at least a couple of hours and seen a Costco near an off-ramp when it's close to lunch or dinner time, preferably on a Saturday or Sunday? And your stomach is growling? Did it yesterday. The economy is clearly sputtering as there were FEWER people in the store on a Sunday at about 4 pm and FEWER tasting stands. If you are unobstrusive, you can manage 2 tastes at any station you like. It will fill you up some and you can sample foods you may not ordinarily buy or find something you will eventually buy. Obviously, I also look at their latest electronics to see if there is anything I need. I also …

Although most of you probably were too busy to notice, I've largely been absent since May. Long story short, my laptop died and I've been too broke to buy a new one. That should change in the coming weeks and I'll be slowly stepping back in to the old swing of things and contributing articles again. For those of you that listened to the recent podcast, you'll know that I've landed a new job as a part-time pharmacy tech and, with any luck, I should be on track to attend college this fall. Until I have a new computer, I'll mainly be contributing to the site through the podcast since my iPhone works very well for Skype, so if you enjoy my annoying banter be sure to listen. …
