Cutting models from lineups seems to be the order of the day lately. Automakers like Nissan, General Motors, and Mercedes Benz, are in the process of hatcheting the heck out their lineups. Now comes the news from BMW. BMW has been struggling to make money on vehicles less than €40,000, due to fears of another global recession, a marked slowdown in the automotive sector, and Trump inspired trade wars, BMW is looking to cull options and models from their lineup. Gone will be many convertible variants, including the next Z4, the 2-series, 8-series (coupe and convertible). Also pushing up the daisies will be the 7-series standard wheelbase (Not offered in the US), the …

BMW has taken the wraps off the 2020 BMW 2-series Gran Coupe. It will come in two flavors, a 228 hp 228i Drive and a 301hp M235i xDrive. The 228i is powered by BMW's "B" modular engine family. It produces 228 horsepower from 5,000 rpm - 6,000 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque from 1,450 rpm to 4,500 rpm. The M235i increase that to 301 horsepower from 5,000 rpm - 6,250 rpm and 332 lb-ft of torque from 1,750 rpm - 4,500 rpm. The 235's engine gets larger diameter main bearings, new pistons connecting rods, a larger turbocharger, and a larger capacity cooling system. all of that gets you to 60 in 4.7 seconds, a 1.3 second improvement over the 6.0 seconds the base engine gets y…

BMW 1-Series U.S.-Bound (Eventually) Way back in January of this year, BMW's CEO, Tom Purves, was quoted by Automotive News as saying that the 1-series, "is absolutely coming" and up until now, that's the last we've heard. Now, in another interview with AutoNews, Norbert Reithofer, BMW's newest CEO, says, "We will definitely bring the 1-series to the United States, but it will not be a hatchback." Instead, we should expect a coupe, sedan and station wagon (although we're not quite sure how that's different from the image above) in the future. Autoblog

SPY SHOTS! 2009 BMW X6 Link to Original Article @ Jalopnik According to the report from the wily spy shooters of KGP, they happened upon a group of BMW engineers out testing the new BMW X6 who'd run into a bit of trouble in the 128-degree heat of a "desolate California road." We'll let KGP take over from here: Despite the giveaways offered by the spy shots, it's still hard for us to determine the overall design of the X6, but the look we've now got due to these shots certainly makes it easier.

Our friends at KGP Photography have cracked off some excellent shots of what they believe is an early BMW X6 mule. Derived from the new X5, the new crossover will apparently weigh style over utility, with a more aggressively sloped roofline and steep windshield. The spy shooters originally thought they could be looking at another planned X5-based vehicle, the V5, but given the fact that it doesn't appear to be very efficient in terms of packaging (The V5 is said to be pitched at Mercedes-Benz's R-Class), they've decided otherwise. BMW will introduce a modern and authentic performance coupe that draws inspiration from its iconic 2002 models of some 40 years ago. The next BMW legend, the 1 Series Coupe, represents the core BMW philosophies of pure performance and premium design. By combining sporty rear-wheel-drive dynamics, agile handling, powerful engines and seating for four, the 1 Series Coupe will reinvent the niche that the legendary BMW 2002 created. On sale in the spring of 2008, the 1 Series Coupe will be available in two versions; the 128i and the 135i. Powered by…

BMW 5-series GT Greg Kable AutoWeek February 13, 2009 - 9:32 am ET BMW's desire to compete in every conceivable luxury-market niche has moved up a gear with the unveiling of the 5-series GT, a car known until now by its working title, the Progressive Activity Sedan. Although BMW will be billing the five-door liftback as a concept at its public showing at the Geneva motor show in early March, little about its bold design is expected to change before it reaches showrooms. In fact, the official photographs reveal the new car in its production-based glory. Only the trim will be altered before it sees the showroom, BMW says. By insisting that it is called a GT…

BMW CS Concept revealed (New 8-Series?) BMW has taken the wraps off the CS Concept — a new "four-door-coupe" designed to tackle the Mercedes CLS, Porsche Panamera, and Maserati Quattroporte. The car is likely a preview of the recently rumored 8-Series revival, or alternatively a four-door 6-Series. Either way, it points to BMW's future design direction for the company as a whole. The debut of the CS Concept follows a report by German car magazine Auto Zeitung that claimed BMW would launch a four-door coupe using the 8-Series designation, starting with a new 850i. In June 2006, Germany's Auto Bild ran a cover story on BMW's planned rival to the Mercedes CLS. The magazin…

Today, BMW pulled the wraps off the sixth-generation 7-Series. The new version of BMW's flagship includes new tech and less weight. To our eyes, the 2016 7-Series looks like a larger 3-Series. The front boasts a larger kidney grille and narrow headlights, while towards the back has a short overhang and chrome tailpipes. The U.S. will only get the long-wheelbase version of the 7-Series. Under the skin lies one of the biggest changes to the 7-Series. Like the i3 and i8, the 7-Series uses a new internal structure called Carbon Core. The structure is comprised of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic and ultra-high-tensile steel. Along with aluminum doors and trunk lid, BMW has…

Changing a Winning Ad Slogan for No Good Reason Some Marketers Learn Nothing From Others' Past Mistakes By Al Ries Published: August 06, 2006 Back in 1974, BMW sold 15,007 automobiles in the American market, which made the brand the 11th largest-selling European vehicle. A new BMW X5 is coming within the next year or so and it will be using the same underpinnings as the 7-Series. Autocar reports the next-generation X5 will use BMW's new CLAR - Cluster Architecture - modular platform. This platform is comprised of high-strength steel, aluminium, and carbon fiber. Not only does this cut weight, but increases structural rigidity. CLAR is predominantly built for rear-wheel drive applications, but it can take on an all-wheel drive system. This platform will go on to underpin a number of other BMW vehicles such as the next-generation 3 and 6-Series. Engine choices for the next X5 are reported to be a 3.0L straight-six, a new twin-tu…

BMW is studying ways to give its performance M-Division special models not based on any current or former BMW. BMW has already apparently decided which class of car the models will be in, but will not reveal details on it just yet. Multiple concepts are being studied. The comments came from Markus Flasch, BMW's head of in-house tuning. Further up for debate is whether the models would be internal combustion or electric or a blend of both. Whichever form they take, the M cars would "fit our character.... a combination of precision, agility, and luxury", though they would not necessarily be positioned above the M8. Having standalone models would help BMW's M-…

BMW's vice-president of sales and marketing for the M division, Peter Quintus believes that manual and dual-clutch transmissions will be going the way of the dodo bird performance vehicles. According to Drive, Qunitus has been banging the drum on the demise of manual transmissions for a bit. The reason isn't due to emissions but comes down them not being able to handle engines with loads of torque - saying 600Nm of torque (about 442 lb-ft). When asked about using a manual transmission from the U.S. that is able to handle all of this torque, Qunitus said the company found them to be "heavy and the shift quality was awful." The admission of Dual-clutch transmissio…

Edmunds Evaluation: 2007 BMW X3 3.0si With BMW's sport-utility sales slipping recently, some might criticize BMW for letting the X3 languish too long before implementing all the enhancements. If the original X3 were as good as this one is, it might've avoided some of the early dissatisfaction and enjoyed even more success than it has. If you're in the market for a small and sporty sport-ute, put the 2007 BMW X3 back on your list. Read "More of a good thing" @ Edmunds

Dreaming on the roundel: I just "built" a 128i at BMW's website, white with taupe leatherette... NO options. $29,375. A very appealing little coupe, but still about $5000 out of my comfort zone. Why, oh why doesn't an American manufacturer build a small, sporting, RWD 4 seater coupe for about $24,000? Dream on, ocn... dream on.

For kicks, Car and Driver compared the Euro spec 330d turbo diesel to the 330i and full road test. They got 38 mpg combined and over 40 highway mpg at times. To top it off, it got 0-60 in 6.0 seconds and passing times were quicker than the gas version because of the monstrous torque. And yet, the USA and Califronia etc. tries to do everything they can to kill diesels. Just when we get 'clean diesel' now the regulations become like 10 times as hard to meet. Its enough to p1ss ya off. I would love to have a 3 series diesel with stick and AWD if they had one here. Between the greenies and the government and the scared oil companies, how are we ever gonna get ahe…

November 23, 2005 Test Drive: 2006 BMW 530xi Touring Wagon By Veeno Dewan Photos by Greg Wilson In the UK, where I come from, station wagons are known as "Estate cars." Apparently British automotive folklore has it that a wealthy Lord of the Manor wanted a car with a covered rear section so he could tote his pheasant shooting guns while hunting around his thousand-acre country estate: hence the term ‘estate car'. Another more elegant term for this vehicle was the ‘Shooting Brake'. I remember seeing a few old pictures of Jaguars, Rovers and even an Aston Martin converted to these ‘Shooting Brakes'. Yes, I admit station wagons keys have passed through my greasy pa…

BMW announced today their new flagship electrical SUV, the BMW iX. This SUV will launch late in 2021 as a 2022 model. The style will likely be controversial as it retains the concepts overly large kidney grill front end but maintains a sleek drag coefficient of 0.25 Cd which is equal to the Tesla X. This AWD SUV has one motor per axles giving a combined 370 kW or 500 horsepower with a 0 to 62 mph of under 5 seconds. A 100 kW battery pack that will give 600 kilometers on the WLTP cycle or 300 plus miles on the EPA cycle FTP-75. These figures are subject to change once official testing is done. The BMW iX has a 200 kW charging controller for DC fast charging…

The 2019 BMW X7 has finally made its debut and its quite big, and I'm not talking about the grille. Parked next to the X5, the X7 is nine inches longer, making it the longest crossover BMW has sold. For the most part, BMW's designers didn't go too crazy with the design. The overall profile is similar to Mercedes' GLS-Class with a boxy profile and large glass area. One interesting trait is the rear doors being slightly longer than the front to allow for easier access into the second and third rows. Where designers decided to go nuts is the front end and its large kidney grilles. It's a bit much when contrasted with the slim LED headlights. The X7's interior looks t…

http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle.aspx?AR=236253 From Autocar(UK): Car makers that had seemed in a strong position to weather the global economic storm have publicly admitted a 'crisis' as sales continue to slow down. BMW's boss Norbert Reithofer yesterday described the situation to Germany's Spiegel magazine as "the worst crisis BMW has faced in its history". Despite the slow sales, it is the German giant's reliance on leasing that has put it in a very vulnerable position. Meanwhile Daimler boss Deiter Zetsche assessed the current conditions as "the worst crisis since World War II". Martin Winterkorn, boss of Volkswagen, told reporters: "We have neve…

BMW has pulled the covers off the 2016 X1 crossover that will go on sale this fall in the U.S. While the X1 was sold in other markets since 2009, it only came to the U.S. in 2012. Lets talk about the elephant in the room. This is the first BMW to be sold in the U.S. to be based on the German automaker's UKL platform that underpins the new MINI Cooper and other BMW vehicles sold in Europe. Our X1 will only come in all-wheel drive form. Power will come from the 2.0L TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder generating 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic gets the power to all four wheels. The design is heavily influenced by the X5 with a sim…

Spied: 2008 BMW 6-Series Looks like the 2008 BMW 6 Series is getting some exterior updates. Well, actually it doesn't look like it's getting some updates, but when you examine these pictures very closely there are some subtle changes to this 6 Series test mule that indicate a midcycle refresh. The front air dam has a slightly different shape around the fog lights while the rear end is sporting a slightly revised fascia as well. We didn’t catch any interior shots, but we're guessing the 6 Series will get the same shifter first introduced in the X5 along with some minor trim changes. Look for the 2008 BMW 6 Series in dealers by the end of this year. Edmunds

Yes, BMW is leaving no market sector unoccupied with its 1-series. Due to be unveiled at next year's Detroit motorshow in January - BMW is hoping that 1-series coupe and convertible take-up in America will boost 1-series past the half million mark. It arrives here in April with the range spearheaded by the flagship 135i convertible, available in BMW's two familiar trim levels - SE and M Sport. We anticipate the topdog M Sport to wear an anticipated £34,000 price tag. Expect it be followed by the 125i powered by BMW's 218bhp 2.5-litre six-cylinder petrol engine as well as the 204bhp twin-turbo 123d diesel by the end of the year. BMW is very proud of their Spartanburg, South Carolina plant; currently home to the X3, X4, X5, and X6 crossovers. So it comes as no surprise that company chose Spartanburg to debut the third-generation X3 crossover. Styling-wise, the 2018 X3 is an evolution of the current model. There are some changes to help set the new X3 apart from the old model such as a more aggressive front bumper, new take on the kidney grille, slimmer taillights, and twin exhaust tips. The wheelbase has been extended by 2.2-inches, helping balance out the X3's proportions. The interior is a mix of the current X3 and new 5-Series. There is still a driver-focused dash layout with the angled…

Good news out of Frankfurt today—according to a new report in Automotive News, BMW’s forthcoming 1-series coupe will nose in under $30,000 when it arrives in the U.S. this spring. While that’s hardly discount stuff, the rear-drive, entry-level offering has enthusiasts salivating, because even the entry-level 128i will arrive packing a 230-horsepower inline-6. The even more compelling 300-horsepower 135i will command closer to $35k as a starting point, but that should still be enough to spirit away a few sales from Audi A3 and Volvo C30 intenders. BMW’s CEO, Tom Purves, also thinks that the MSRP will be low enough that it will cajole “customers from the likes of Honda, To…

Best look yet at BMW's next-generation 7 Series By Phil Lienert Email Date posted: 12-19-2005 We haven't seen the 2009 BMW 7 Series, but we know people who have a good idea of what it's going to look like. They put together these renderings based on their insider knowledge to give us a peek at what we can expect from BMW's next flagship sedan. Clear from these pictures, the radical design of the current model has been toned down for the 2009 7 Series. The 2006 7 Series already softened some of the harder edges that offended so many BMW loyalists, but this design will go even further. The most obvious difference between this conceptual 2009 7 Series and t…

A new report from Automotive News says BMW could be expanding their lineup of vehicles in both directions. On the low end is the 1-Series sedan. Already on sale in China, the model could be coming to U.S. in early 2019 according to a source. Previously, BMW said their small front-wheel drive sedan would not be sold in the U.S. But with Mercedes-Benz bringing the A-Class sedan to U.S. next year, this may have cause BMW to change their minds. A quick refresher, the 1-Series sedan is a front-wheel drive model. Moving over to the high-end, BMW is readying the 8-Series coupe to debut late next year. They have already shown a concept to give us an idea of what it may …

The latest, most-notably clear shot reveals a design that follows BMW's recent interior design trend from it's broad swath of aluminum to the highly-placed NAV and curving center-console. Perhaps the most polarizing aspect of the interior is the gear-selector that looks to be sourced from Norelco. We'll see if that piece makes production. Image courtesy KGP

Whether we like it or not, crossovers print money for automakers and some are going above and beyond to make sure they get every last dollar. Case in point is BMW which unveiled the X2 which follows the same formula of the X4 and X6 by taking an existing model (the X1 in this case) and injecting a bit more sport. Unlike the X4 and X6, the X2 doesn't have the coupe-like roofline. It instead looks like your standard crossover, albeit a low-slung and extroverted one. Compared to the X1, the X2 is 3.2-inches shorter and 2.8-inches lower. Design details include a long hood, raked windshield, aggressively styled rear-end, and the BMW emblem on the rear pillars making…

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/autoshow...*#08bmwx6crg500 What is it? 2009 BMW X6 What's special about it? Coupelike agility combined with SUV utility? That's the promise of the 2009 BMW X6. It sounds like a stretch, but if any company can pull it off, BMW can. It already made its X5 SUV handle like a sedan, so making the similarly sized (although slightly lower) X6 feel like a coupe isn't impossible. A choice of two turbocharged engines should help. Base models, which will be known as the xDrive35i, will get the same twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-6 as the 3 and 5 Series sedans. It delivers 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque, so even the entry-level X6…

BMW is committing to keeping their V12 in production until at least 2023 according to BMW Powertrain Executive Michael Bayer, and he thinks it will be possible to make the engine compliant with the next round of Euro emissions regulations. That means it will stick around for the rest of the current generation of the 7-series sedan. Unfortunately, there will still not be a V12 offered in the 8-series coupe. We've already reported that Mercedes plans to cut its V12 out of the S-Class sedan after the 2020 model year. By doing so, it will make BMW the standard bearer for the final V12s in regular production. Audi already canceled its W12 engine starting with the 2017 …

Eight speeds and a more voluptuous look? by Brenda Priddy | (2007-07-16) | Link to Original Article @ TCC A refreshed BMW 7-Series is undergoing testing, and TheCarConnection.com's spies have nabbed it a year before it goes on sale. We're expecting the new 7-Series to have a completely new front end, similar to the 6-Series styling, and sources say the current model's extravagant design will be toned down quite a bit. The sedan should have a more elegant look than ever before. The position of the headlights and turn signals indicate low-mounted, wrap-around headlights and a wide grille, as well as a sleeker body and a more dramatic overall appearance. In addition to…

HANNOVER, Germany — Thermaltake, the Taiwanese manufacturer of computer cases and cooling equipment, unveiled its "Level 10" PC case at the annual CeBIT computer exposition here. The Thermaltake Gaming Tower was designed by the Munich studio of BMW's DesignworksUSA. Instead of utilizing the normal strategy of throwing all the different computer parts into one bulky, rectangular case, BMW dreamt up this idea of using a separate protective case for each component. The design of the Thermaltake Gaming Tower makes the inside components visible to help with cooling and make it look more appealing to the user. An innovative feature of the concept is its smart locking system…

BMW unveils the turbosteamer concept December 14, 2005 A large percentage of the energy released when petroleum is burned disappears out the exhaust system as heat. This has always been the case but the amount of energy released looks set to be cut by more than 80% thanks to a new system devised by BMW. BMW’s announcement of the new technology is somewhat of a technological bombshell as it adds yet another form of hybrid automobile – a turbosteamer. The concept uses energy from the exhaust gasses of the traditional Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) to power a steam engine which also contributes power to the automobile – an overall 15 per cent improvement for the combined…

Spied: 2007/2008 BMW 335i The 2008 335i: Faster...but uglier. BMW has given the 3-Series sedan the coupe's 3.0-liter I-6 twin turbo engine but I kind of wish they would have decided to let the coupe keep the nose. Read "Spied: 2007/2008 BMW 3-Series sedan facelift (335i Sedan)" @ Leftlane News

What’s Better Than Outstanding? We hit 60 mph in 4.8 seconds with the latest 3-series. BY TONY SWAN, PHOTOGRAPHY BY AARON KILEY September 2006 Experience has taught us that no vehicle is immune to improvement. No matter how seductive the styling, no matter how compelling the dynamics, we know that somewhere squads of designers and engineers are toiling to make a good thing even better. Consider the BMW 335i sedan. When the fifth generation 3-series sedan made its debut in early 2005, it was hard to see just where a significant improvement might be made in this outstanding car. Then the 335i coupe came along, and suddenly the plan became clear. Right: they’ll make tha…

It was thought that BMW would use the Paris Motor Show later this year to debut the production version of the X7 three-row crossover. But a report from Autocar says the new model will bow at the LA Auto Show. Considering the model was developed for the U.S. and Chinese markets, this move makes some sense. BMW has already built pre-production X7s at their Spartanburg, South Carolina plant for testing. The production model will also be built here. Autocar reports that the X7 at launch will come with a range of six- and eight-cylinder gas and diesel engines. A plug-in hybrid and an M performance version are expected down the road. It is still unknown when BMW …

BMW has revealed the 1-Series sedan today in China. This is the German automaker's belated answer to the likes of the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz CLA. BMW has only released one image of the new model, but we can tell the design is the same as the Concept Compact Sedan that debuted at last year's Guangzhou Auto Show. BMW's press release on this model is very sparse on technical details. We do believe this sedan is using the UKL front-wheel drive platform that underpins the BMW X1 and Mini Cooper. Power will likely come from turbocharged three and four-cylinder engines. It is expected the model will go on sale soon in China and be produced at Brilliance Auto's plant …

For those who thought the BMW X2 was lacking in power will be happy to hear about the 2019 X2 M35i. The X2 M35i is a M Performance model (not a full-blown M model), and sits alongside the M235i. Unlike the coupe, the X2 M35i skips the turbo inline-six. What you'll find instead is a hotted-up version of the 2.0L TwinPower turbocharged four-cylinder with 302 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque - making this the most powerful four-cylinder that BMW has ever built. This is paired with an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. 0-60 mph is said to take about 4.9 seconds. Other mechanical changes to the X2 M35i include a limited-slip differential on the front-axl…

BMW released details on their refreshed 2020 7-series sedan. The 7-series gets updated looks, powertrains, and technology updates in the next model year. Immediately noticeable is the gigantic new BMW kidney grille. In the rear are new, slimmer tail lamps connected by a narrow strip extending the width of the car. Four engines will be offered in the 7-series. The top of the line is a 600 horsepower V12 capable of bringing the M760i xDrive to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. Also available will be a 745e plug-in hybrid with an inline 6-cylinder paired with an electric motor to provide a combined 389hp/442 lb-ft of torque and 4.9 second 0-60mph. The all-…

By 2025, BMW is planning to have 25 electrified vehicles in its lineup - 12 being full electric. One of those models will look somewhat similar to the Vision iNext concept that has been revealed today. Lets address the elephant in the room, the exterior design. The overall shape is very polarizing (we know, huge understatement) with a grotesque take on BMW's iconic double kidney grille, square fenders, large glass area, and wheels that looked liked they were pulled off from a fan. No side view mirrors are to be found - instead a set of cameras handle that. There are also door handles. Instead, the surface of the car will light up, indicating where to touch to open the…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 29, 2013 For the past few years on the automotive auto show circuit, BMW has been showing off two concept vehicles that previews a new sub-brand; the i3 electric vehicle and i8 plug-in hybrid. Today in New York City, BMW pulled the covers off the first production vehicle of their new i sub-brand, the i3. The BMW i3 is definitely a different type of vehicle from the Munich automaker. Built on what BMW calls the LifeDrive architecture, the i3 comes in two parts. First is the Life Module which is the i3's body. The Life Module is made out of carbon fiber reinforced plastic which contributes to the i3's curb weight of a…

BMW M3 recalled over new double-clutch gearbox From AutoBlog Dual clutch transmission... sounds complicated. And it is. Case in point: BMW's new DCT on its latest-generation M3. This new transmission from Munich is so complicated that apparently even BMW couldn't get it right the first time, so they're issuing a recall. The problem, as concluded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, is that under hard braking the transmission's software is prone to initiate a multi-stage downshift, which could cause the car to stall. The solution, however, should be fairly simple, as BMW is asking all owners of 2008 or 2009 M3s equipped with the DCT (about 2,500 …

Rumorpile: BMW Coupe To Be Named 3 Series or 4 Series? William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com October 24, 2011 A week ago, BMW did a big rollout for the next generation 3-Series starting with the sedan. Now spy shots have emerged of the coupe undergoing some testing. Design wise, the coupe will share a family resemblance with the sedan. The coupe will have its headlights stretched inward to meet up with the grille, a lower intake that flares wide at each corner of the car, and share the same design cues for the trunk with the new 6-Series. Engines will be same as the sedan with the choice of the between the new N20 2.0-liter turbo four, of…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com June 15, 2013 Almost a year after BMW introduced the new 3-Series, the roundel has introduced the coupe variation with the 4-Series. Yes, we're still scratching our heads as to why BMW thought this was a good idea. The 4-Series' look is very much a 3-Series with two less doors and a lot of body sculpting. There is also wider front and rear tracks. Inside is the same story with coupe have the interior as the sedan and similar trim lines – Luxury, Sport and M Sport. Powering the 4-Series is either a 2.0L turbocharged inline-four (428i) with 240 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, or turbocharged 3.0L inline-six (435i…

Inside Info: BMW X6 German magazine Auto Zeitung has spilled more information on BMW’s upcoming X6 Coupe, a sporty version of the hugely successful X5. Scheduled for release in the beginning of 2008, the X6 will share the same four-door coupe styling made so popular by the CLS, but will do so on the same platform as the X5. Being a “fun SUV,” the X6 will come with a more driver-oriented interior and range of powerful engines. The relationship between the X5 and X6 will be the same as the 5 and 6-series – more sporting and upscale. BMW’s goal is to target the Porsche Cayenne by having a vehicle that is both more fun to drive and cheaper to boot. The X6 will get engines …

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com April 5, 2013 Chew on this for a moment: "One in four new BMW cars is now a BMW SAV." SAV for those who don't know BMW lingo is for sport activity vehicle, or what we could call a crossover. Its one reason why BMW's X lineup has grown from the lowly X5 to a family of vehicles including the X1, X3, X5, and X6. Its also why at the Shanghai Motor Show BMW will be showing smaller crossover coupe called the X4 Concept. The X4 Concept's design can best be explained as a X6 left in the washing machine a bit too long. In other words, its a polarizing design in a smaller package. We don't know any details on the interior or wh…

Whenever there is a new 5-Series, the countdown clock is started for the arrival of high-performance M5. Today, the clock hit zero as BMW unveiled the 2018 M5. Under the hood lies a familiar twin-turbo 4.4L V8 with 600 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque - healthy increases of 40 and 53 respectively. A new eight-speed automatic is the sole transmission choice, sorry manual lovers. The 2018 M5 also comes with the M xDrive system which can either send power to all four wheels or just the rear wheels if you want to some smoky drifts. 60 mph comes in 3.2 seconds and can hit a top speed of 155 mph (189 mph if you opt for the M Driver's Package). If BMW wants to be in top in the compact luxury marketplace, then it needs to constantly improve the 3-Series. BMW knows this fact very well and has announced improvements for the 2016 3-Series. The big changes for the 3-Series lie under the hood. First is the 340i which takes place of the 335i. It boasts a new all-aluminum twin-turbocharged 3.0L straight-six with 320 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic will come standard, while a six-speed manual with rev matching will be a no cost option. BMW's XDrive all-wheel drive will be an option. The other change is the introduction of the 330e, the first plug-in hybrid 3-Series. BMW estimates figur…

BMW will become the next automaker to drop their diesel offerings in the U.S. Speaking to Green Car Reports, BMW spokesman Alexander Schmuck revealed diesels would be dropped for the 2019 model year for the automaker to focus on plug-in hybrids. "We're putting all our eggs in the PHEV basket," said Schmuck. BMW brought back diesel power in 2008 with the 335d and X5 3.0d that used a turbodiesel inline-six. This would be followed up by a turbodiesel four-cylinder for the 3-Series and X3, along with the inline-six for the 5-Series. But the Volkswagen diesel emission scandal in late 2015, along with stringent emissions testing and standards have caused sales of dies…

Spied: BMW Z9 BMW is testing new prototypes for a new convertible. Whether this is the new Z4 or the more upscale Z9 is a matter of intense conjecture at this point. We originally thought Z4, but closer inspection suggests that this could be BMW’s SL-fighter–the Z9. This prototype is clearly larger than today’s Z4, but that also supports earlier reports that the next-gen Z4 would be growing up a bit to make room for an entry-level Z2 roadster. The most noteworthy details on this prototype are the side windows–a glass-to-glass pillarless design reminiscent of the BMW 8-series and the Mercedes CL. Is that enough of a clue to prove this is the Z9? Quite possibly, especial…

BMW Disappointed With 5-Series GT Sales William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 23, 2011 When BMW introduced the 5-Series GT back in 2009, the company said the vehicle was a stylish alternative (their words, not ours) to minivans and crossovers. BMW also hoped the 5-Series GT would appeal to owners of the 5-Series Touring. Well, the 5-Series GT is becoming a disappointment for BMW. According to Automotive News, BMW of North America CEO Jim O’Donnell said sales of the 5-Series GT in the US have been disappointing. BMW had hoped the 5-Series GT would sell around 4,000 to 8,000 per year, but has only sold 2,848 vehicles in 2010. That's only…

2008 BMW M5 Touring BMW’s hottest property at the Geneva motor show in March will likely be an M5 Touring (wagon) version of its screaming M5 sedan. The high-performance load hauler is set to compete against the likes of the Audi S6 Avant and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG wagon, with power coming from the same highly strung 5.0-liter V10 engine used in the two-year-old M5 sedan. BMW doesn't have a vehicle that directly competes with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class coupe, but Autocar says that could be changing. According to sources at BMW's R&D center in Munich, there are two proposals on the table for a new 8-Series. The first is a four-door coupe - think 6-Series Gran Coupe in a larger size - and the second is a for a two-door coupe and cabriolet. Why is BMW considering a competitor to the S-Class Coupe? Because they want to experience the same profits that Mercedes is currently enjoying. According to internal studies, Mercedes is earning up to 30,000 Euros on every S-Class they sell. That turns into a tidy profit of up to billion Euros i…

"Happiness isn't around the corner. Happiness IS the corner." So said an ad for BMW created in 1996 for the Z3. In the TV version (see the video at the very bottom after the break), a heavy-metal music track underlined the idea, which was carried over to magazines and billboards. I'm reminded of that ad, one of the more perfect expressions of the BMW brand I have ever seen, this week as I take in the Bavarian automaker's plan to launch vehicles powered by "alternative" powertrains under the "i" sub-brand: as in, yes, iPad, iPod, iMac. So far, I'm not hearing about Apple filing trademark infractions. It is, I believe, also "i" as i Isetta, the last time BMW brought out a …

In 2018, when BMW launched it's 7.0 operating system for its in-car infotainment, it included Apple Car Play for free for the first 12 months. After that, the owner was asked to pay $80 for a 1 year subscription to Car Play or $300 for a 240 month subscription. This caused a stir among BMW owners because Apple Car Play is included at no charge in nearly every other brand out there and because Apple doesn't charge manufacturers to use Apple CarPlay in their models. Models as basic as the Chevrolet Sonic have CarPlay as standard and without any subscription fees. Now BMW has confirmed it is backing away from the subscription model in order to keep customers happy. Al…

The design is more dramatic than the 6-Series coupe with a long front end, "double-bubble" roof contouring, and interesting shape for the trunk lid. There have been some rumors floating around for the past couple of years that BMW was planning to offer a 3-Series with a fully electric powertrain. Some new spy shots reveal that may come to fruition. At first glance, this looks like a normal 3-Series sedan. But on the front doors, there is a label that reads "Electric Test Vehicle". BMW has also tried to disguise the fact this is an electric by attaching tailpipes, but the spy photographer says its a pure EV. Not much is known about the electric powertrain or batteries. This mule was seen testing with a Tesla Model 3, suggesting that BMW sees it a direct competitor to the 3-Series EV. To do that, the model wou…

While the driving dynamics potential of the vehicle was clear in its strong, purposeful lines, equally appealing to visitors was the striking interior design. It will be a long wait till we see the final product, but BMW has released a teaser picture of their upcoming 2-Series Gran Coupe 4-door sedan due to be released at the LA Auto Show later this year. Under the hood expect a 2 liter turbo charged engine transversely mounted as in the BMW X2. When the next-generation BMW 3-Series comes out in a couple of years, there could be a variant missing. BMWBlog has learned from a source that the 3-Series Gran Turismo (GT) is on the chopping block. The reason is that the 3-Series GT overlaps with the 4-Series Gran Coupe and it would make sense to focus one in the future. We're not sure if many BMW customers are cross-shopping a hatchback with a four-door coupe. We're thinking that the GT didn't meet BMW's sales expectations which is possibly why it could be getting the axe. The next 3-Series is expected to debut in 2018 with sales beginning towards the end of year. Source: BMWBlog View full article
