This was taken from a Canadian auto web site. Much of this matched what the Fbodfather has stated before. HOT CAMARO CONCEPT WILL BECOME A REALITY "It is now clear that the car that made the biggest waves at the Detroit auto show was the Camaro concept. It is now an open secret that it will be built. "Ever since the first day I got to General Motors I've been getting mail from Camaro owners, Camaro clubs, Camaro fanatics," Lutz said during the show. "It's like a cult following out there. "I've been telling them, just wait until the Detroit auto show. I think you'll be pleased. But most of the e-mails lately have been, 'Hey, you've been there four years already. W…

GM to build a new plant in Mexico Jamie LaReau | | Automotive News / March 30, 2006 - 8:15 am DETROIT -- General Motors will start construction on a new assembly plant in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, sometime in May. GM will build compact and sub-compact vehicles at the new facility to be sold only in Mexico, says Carlos Gelista, director of public relations and government relations for GM Mexico. The plant, which should be running sometime in 2008, will assemble about 30 vehicles per hour and employee about 1,800 people, Gelista says. The cost to construct and equip the new plant will be between $600 million to $650 million. Part of that will be paid by the Mexican…

GM stock at $16.41! This is the lowest it has been since 1974, and in 1974 the dollar was worth 5 times what it is now. Is it time to buy or have we not seen the bottom yet? There are some who are saying it will drop to $10 before we see it go up again. What do you all think?

A story from the Crain sisters, Automotive News and Autoweek, reports that General Motors has cut product development spending for 2009 in an effort to save approximately $1.5 billion next year. Reductions in engineering, design and R&D work on future models has been rumored for the last week, possibly causing the delay (or death) of a few select models. However, the Camaro and Volt haven't been affected by the cuts (no surprise, since they're all but complete), and the new Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Traverse and Cadillac CTS Wagon should hit the market has planned, late next year and early in 2010. After the story surfaced earlier today, the Detroit News got in on t…

Rick Wagoner pretty much hits the nail on the head, thereβs nothing to gain and everything to lose if Delphi strikes next year. While no one can be happy with the 60% pay cut for Delphi workers (there must be a better salary/benefit combo) and βSteveβ Miller comes off as a pretentious ass, only fueling the UAW anger, change in the unions pay and benefit packages are inevitable. A strike by workers would put Delphi down for the count and GM up against the ropes and not change much for the hourly workers. I am not as confident as Wagoner is in this Detroit News piece about Delphi workers not striking, he may be underestimating workers that will be dropped to near poverty…

My question is "How many more body blows can GM take?" GM paid approximately $2.4 billion for 20% of Fiat Auto and spent another $2.0 billion to cancel Fiat's put. That's $4.4 billion of cash expended for what in the end was a bit of diesel engine technology. Essentially a loss of $4.4 billion. GM paid approximately $1.4 billion for a 20% stake in Fuji Heavy Industries (maker of Subaru). It then sold 8.7% of its stake to Toyota for $315 million, implying the remainder (to be sold at market prices back to Fuji for retiring) is valued at around $408 million. This would amount to about a $677 million loss on GM'…

http://media.gm.com/servlet/GatewayServlet...n=2&docid=19615 Understatement of the year: Really? $15b in savings? Time well spent? What insight! Other news This is interesting because GMAC is GM's cash-flow darling. There's a reason why GM hasn't divested itself from GMAC earlier than this: it's because GMAC brings in big money to GM's bottom line. You remove this, then you'd better be pretty confident you can make money selling cars. If GM makes this move, then they better have the rest of the ship in tight shape.. While it's nice to see that Delphi's bankrupcty isn't going to cost them a full …

I knew I shoudn't have read the Wheels section of the Star before I'd had my first drink of the day, but.............. Just because the Impala is selling well and has won praise from some members of the media, the Toronto Star had to publish something to drag it down. After all - now that GM is making money again, Toyota may have to cut back on its payments to Mark Richardson, the so-called editor of the Wheels section. So today they printed a letter from one Robert Reid of Oshawa (some coincidence there, I think) who rented an Impala in California recently. Other than bitching about the mirrors being too small and other nitpicks, I will quote the section that m…

I really like the Dodge Magnum Hemi/SRT8 vehicles. I am nowhere close to being a MOPAR guy and would love for GM, preferably Chevy, to build something comparable. I believe Pontiac would be the best served to pull it off. Any possiblilities? Keep in mind: fairly new member, very few posts, and continue to like the Dodge Magnum and trying not to admit it.

http://www.tennessean.com/article/20090405...ESS01/904050366 I say we close BG next.... Move the C7 to Wilmington. So what's the deal? Traverse axed? Traverse moved to Lansing? If the Traverse is axed, wouldn't this make the case for GMC that much stronger. This is a segment where GM MUST have a volume entry. The Outlook is gone, and the Traverse seems to be on shakey ground. That's funny... I didn't think Obama was in the business of running car companies. But apparently they can decide what plants to close? Remember; this is the government "For The People" err... "For The People That Voted For Us" But, we all know how good the government is at…

Potential For a More Detroit-Friendly Congress? When Congress reconvenes in January, Detroit automakers will have a lot of friends in high places -- and that has foreign automakers a little wary. With the return to power of Michigan's congressional Democrats -- who will head three key committees and have significant say over the agenda on Capitol Hill -- lawmakers are expected to revive several proposals aimed at helping the domestic industry. Is Michigan relevant anymore to house a couple of the world's largest auto companies? -Michigan is not supporting the automakers a whole bunch and they may get more support if they were in other states -UAW influences are too prevalent in that part of the country. Moving could be a nice way to thumb their noses at the union bunch -other carmakers are locating plants in the south, etc. where labor is more favorable -perhaps a cultural hotbed like California or a more businesslike city like New York would be more appropriate for such global companies or closer to wall st. -many Americans feel GM etc. are isolated in a state like Michigan and think of GM as a more…

GM: June sales dive spells brutal summer Bill Vlasic / The Detroit News DETROIT -- Sales at General Motors Corp. dropped sharply in June as the No. 1 U.S. automaker grappled with the long-term impact of its shrinking market share. GM's top sales executive said Tuesday that he was hopeful that the company's U.S. market share had hit bottom at 22 percent in June, but acknowledged that gains will be hard to come by until next year. "Is that the bottom? I'm not a clairvoyant, but I certainly hope so," said Mark LaNeve, GM's head of North American sales and marketing. On the day after announcing the unprecedented buyouts and retirements of 35,000 of its hourly worker…

DETROIT--General Motors Chief Executive G. Richard Wagoner, in Washington to plead his case for more government financing, brought fresh evidence Thursday of GM's desperate situation--a $9.6 billion loss in the final three months of 2008. The Presidential Task Force on Autos had summoned Wagoner and several other senior executives to Washington to answer questions about the company's request for up to $16.6 billion more in taxpayer aid, on top of the $13.4 billion it has already received from the U.S. Treasury since Dec. 31. The task force, led by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and White House Economic Advisor Lawrence Summers, wanted a better understanding of GM…

The news isn't getting any better at General Motors' CAMI plant where workers have been on strike for a month after the automaker and Canadian union Unifor were unable to reach an agreement. Already, the strike has caused GM to make adjustments and idle some of their plants in North America, and there are concerns about the shrinking stock of Chevrolet Equinoxes. But now the stakes have been raised. According to Reuters and Automotive News, General Motors issued a warning to leaders at Unifor that it will start winding down production of the Equinox at CAMI unless the strike is called off. Unifor leader Jerry Dias was told by GM officials that the automaker would be…

Mary Barra, General Motors' CEO tells USA Today in an interview that the company is "among the leaders" in the development of self-driving cars. Now this claim seems a bit dubious since the only pieces of self-driving technologies that GM is working on is the Super Cruise system that will be debuting on the Cadillac CT6. and the company disclosing that it's running a fleet of driverless Volts at the Warren Technical Center. The remaining efforts are being kept confidential at the moment. "Things are moving quickly in autonomous (cars) because there's so many different pathways and the standards aren't even set. A lot of people can claim leads because people are making…

By Jamie LaReau Automotive News / October 24, 2005 General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner doubtless sighed with relief last week after announcing a deal with the UAW to reduce GM's health care costs. The UAW's rank and file is expected to ratify the plan to shift some health insurance and prescription drug costs onto retirees and active workers. If so, GM's after-tax savings would total $1 billion a year. That's not chump change, but it won't be enough to restore GM's profits. Last week, the automaker announced that its North American automotive operation lost $1.6 billion in the third quarter. Restive investors (read: Kirk Kerko…

Am listening to CSPAN today. A rep from NY asked "raise your hand if you flew here commercially" of course nobody did..."raise your hand if your going to sell your personal jet and fly home commercially", of course no hands raised. I know that would be kinda hard to do but it's the point. He continued on with "you flew in with a private jet then walk off it with a tin can". Another rep asked Wagoner if he was willing to work for $1 for '09. He said he had no thoughts on that at this time. Mullaley was asked the same thing and basically said the same thing. Lutz Not Happy with Changing Fuel Economy Rules A proposal to increase the U.S. fuel economy standards would force Detroit-based automakers market to "hand over" the market for trucks and sport utility vehicles to Japanese manufacturers, a senior General Motors Corp.(NYSE:GM - news) executive said. This is a long a term strategy and may be the thing needed to make GM cars wanted by the public again. I think that GM needs to bring the Holden and Opel nameplates to N. America. I don't wanna get rid of Buick, Pontiac, or Saturn, but I think the names need to be changed. Pontiacs and Buicks are just not in people's minds anymore when they think of buying a car. They are not considered 'cool' cars to own. If GM brings over those 2 new nameplates, I really think GM could make more sales. After all, those would be considered import autos, even though they're GM. When you tell someone you bought a new Buick or Pontiac, you shouldn't have to …

GM: Feeding the Healthcare Giant The world's largest automaker is being driven deep into financial trouble not only by the cars of a competitor, but also by the medical bills of its own workers and retirees. Last year, GM spent $5.3 billion on health care -- enough to buy a GMC Yukon for each of its U.S. employees. By 2008, General Motors will likely spend more on health care in the United States than on its hourly-worker payroll. Read "Stranglehold" @ The Detroit News

GM cuts $200 million from ad budget Automaker will concentrate on product launches By JAMIE LAREAU | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS AutoWeek | Published 02/06/06, 8:14 am et DETROIT -- In the wake of its financial disaster in 2005, General Motors is cutting its 2006 national marketing budget by more than $200 million, sources close to GM say. The cuts come in a year of crucial product launches and renewed attempts to promote GM's new price strategy. GM's national ad budget will be about $1.3 billion this year, sources say. Older vehicles and brands such as Buick and Pontiac will suffer as GM concentrates its spending on product launches, including the critical full-sized SUVs an…

CAW Approves Camaro Changes Plant rules will enable Canadian factories to build Zetas, including Camaro. Members of Canadian Auto Workers Local 222 in Oshawa, Ont., have approved a series of work rule changes that could lead to General Motors announcing soon that it plans to move ahead with plans to build a new Chevrolet Camaro. The Camaro was one of the big favorites of journalists and car buffs at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. GM's executives have promised they will decide quickly if they will turn the concept Camaro into a production car before end of the decade. WASHINGTON β General Motors Corp. (GM) said Friday it is recalling about 900,000 pickup trucks worldwide to fix problems with tailgate cables that can corrode and break when loads are placed on them. The recall involves 1999-2000 models of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks. GM said there have been 84 injuries, most of them minor scrapes and bumps, but no crashes or deaths linked to the problem. GM, the world's No. 1 automaker, said the galvanized, braided-steel support cables that keep the tailgates in place can corrode or fracture over time because of moisture seeping through cracks in the plastic sheathing of the cable or entering between the cable's met…

About 65 percent there: General Motors making progress Posted 12/11/2006 1:00:00 AM by Todd Lassa Link to Full Article @ Motor Trend Community Even on its own, GM looks much better now than it did last year, when it lost $10.6 billion. The automaker drove home its reasons for cautious optimism at a media event I attended last Thursday night. But first, CEO Rick Wagoner (pictured speaking at the recent L.A. auto show) spoke of impending financial results. This time last year, GM was $2.3 billion in the hole. Much of the remaining …

I need a lot of opinions on this truck. I want to get the opinions of everybody on the SEMA Z71 Plus concept. Its a radical step away from the current 355 trucks. It obviously includes some of the traits of the 900 series, as evidenced by the tremendous new fender flairs. It also has some flavor of other GM cars, with Camaro-style low profile lights, a cleaner tailgate, and revised interior. This is the fourth time GM has unveiled a Colorado Concept model with the 5.3 V8. I see alot of pre-production hints in this truck. I need the opinions of everybody here. What do you like? What do you hate? What else would you like to see happen? Please, let us know any opinions, an…

http://www.leftlanenews.com/2006/06/14/wag...r-gms-top-goal/ General Motors boss Rick Wagoner said being the worldβs largest automaker is not the companyβs top priority anymore, according to the Wall Street Journal. βWould we like to stay number one? Sure. Is it the top priority of the company? No,β he said at a press conference in St. Petersburg, Russia, where the automaker is building a new plant. βWeβre really focused on very strong profitability growth and balance-sheet strength in addition to driving the revenue side.β Recently, there has been a great deal of speculation that Toyota will soon surpass GM in terms of overall worldwide sales volume. Tripower is one of General Motors' most revered names. Used on Pontiac V8 engines from 1957-1966, Tripower referred to the use of three two-barrel carburetors on top of the engine. GM is bringing back the name for the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. But in this case, Tripower carries a very different meaning. At the CAR Management Briefing Seminars yesterday, Mike Anderson, GM's executive director of global transmission and electrification hardware engineering said Tripower will now "refer to a suite of technologies that boosts horsepower and fuel economy" for the new 2.7L turbo-four. According to Automotive News, Tripower will include cylinder de…

UPDATE: Pontiac has told us that the new Vibe will be appearing at the Los Angeles Auto Show in the fall instead of the New York show. The word on the web is that GM won't be taking the Pontiac Vibe behind the tool shed just yet. The Vibe nameplate, however, may be gone in favor of a "G" designation to follow with Pontiac's current naming scheme. While there is no official confirmation, the second-generation Vibe is expected to continue to be a joint product between GM and Toyota. The Matrix, Toyota's version of the car, is set to be replaced next spring by a car designed after the Mazda3 and similar to the European-market Auris.

Perceptions Aside, GM, Ford Can Stand Proud Pittsburgh Post-Gazette By Roger Simmermaker (Commentary) Ford and General Motors have taken turns besting the Toyota Camry in quality surveys for the past two years, but if you talk to many Americans β especially the ones who would never consider supporting home-based auto companies β you'd never know it. Last year, the Chevrolet Impala beat the Camry in initial quality, according to J.D. Power & Associates. Car & Driver has developed a new phase in thier road test criteria. They will be using Virginia International Raceway or VIR. They did a big spread in the newest issue. In the future they will incorporate a lap time into overall testing. They will use this benchmark on most performance based cars. It's common performance knowledge that if you run a sub 8 minute lap a Nurburgring you've got a great performer. This is our comparable benchmarking location in the US, as defined by C&D. Now something good for GM which came out of the first tests. The Cobalt SS bested the Maxda MX-5 Honda Civic Si & the Volkswagen GTi (by 4-5 seconds per lap) which were in its pric…

By SHARON TERLEP and NEAL E. BOUDETTE The Wall Street Journal A few months ago, General Motors flooded the prime-time airwaves with commercials introducing the G8, a big, powerful sedan that is supposed to re-energize GMβs Pontiac brand. But the ad blitz hasnβt had much effect. In August, GMβs 2,712 U.S. Pontiac dealers sold only 1,915 G8s β not even one per dealer. GM has problems on many fronts, including high gasoline prices, falling truck sales and billions in losses. The G8 illustrates one problem thatβs often overlooked: The automakerβs lineup contains many vehicles that deliver barely any bang for the buck. Consider the Saab 9-5 sedan. GM promotes its Swe…

I have grown weary of watching those damn Toyota ads talking about high mileage cars. I also REALLY dislike those ads about how 90% of XXX Toyota models are still on the road since 19-whatever year. They're both dishonest ads because they don't compare to any other manufacturer (Toyota does a lot of things on the line of dishonesty.) Nevertheless the ads leave an impression on consumers. It's about time GM hired a marketing team and ad agency that knows what the hell they're doing. GM never seems to understand the thoughts of the consumer and they let Toyota treat them like a punching bag and never attack back. They need to go on a serious offensive and attack Toyota merc…

here is a memo i got from one of our sales trainers. A 2006 Prius costs $4,325 more then a compareable Malibu If you average 55 mpg - pay back time will be 5 years If you average 44 mpg - pay back time will be 6.5 years A major consumer magazine states that 44 mpg is more realistic Based on $3 a gallon and 15,000 per year. Based on a Malibu averaging 27 mpg Hot climates have dramatic impact on fuel economy due to the air conditioning draining the battery thus, requiring the use of the gas engine. Dont park a Prius for 2 weeks without starting, this will drain and damage the batteries. This may not be covered by the warranty because it could be consid…

Another day, another large recall set from General Motors. The automaker announced six recalls covering around 3.5 million vehicles from the 2000 to 2015 model years. The largest recall covers around 3.36 million vehicles built between 2000 and 2014 and sold in the US, Canada, and Mexico. The problem deals with the vehicle's ignition switch where it can kicked off from the run position due to if keychain is heavy or if they experience a "jarring" event. GM will modify the ignition key by drilling a four-by-six-millimeter hole to deal with weight of a keychain better. The vehicles affected include: 2005-2009 Buick Lacrosse 2006β2011 Buick Lucerne 2004β2005 Buick Reg…

After weeks of listening to analysts and pundits beat the drum about the possibility of a General Motors Corp. bankruptcy, Chairman and Chief Executive G. Richard Wagoner Jr. decided he had heard enough. On Nov. 16 he declared in an internal memo to his 325,000 employees that bankruptcy is "unnecessary." There is no plan to file for Chapter 11 protection, Wagoner said flatly, calling such an action "contrary to the interests of our employees, stock- and bondholders, dealers, and our suppliers and customers." In other words, Wagoner was calling bankruptcy unthinkable. And for a long time, that's exactly the way it seemed. GM has $34 billion…

If you listen to Al Gore, we have a Global Warming problem. If you listen to the environmental activist lobby its because of companies like GM and people who buy SUVs. Now, GM is being pressured to reconsider its RWD plans because the yelpers and yanters have made Bush propose some rather ambitious CAFE goals -- of course being a Republican President and public enemy #1 to the Liberal media he'll get zero credits for it. In this segement, Mr. Lutz covers a topic many of us have been pondering ourselves - Diesel powertrains. Most notably, why the heck don't we have them here now? After reiterating much of what we knew about the stringencies of US Bin V, Tier II emissions (six times higher than Euro V standards) as well as the even higher local requirements in California and a handful of northeastern states, Mr. Lutz goes on to tell us, yes, those regs can be satisfied with urea and similar catalysizing systems. While the focus on the electric vehicles have been on the ultra plush and quick models from the likes of Tesla, Audi, and Jaguar, there is a lot of work being done for electric delivery vans. The combination of reduced maintenance, low fuel costs, and an abundance of torque to deal with heavy loads make them a perfect to do deliveries in urban areas. Rivian is the most-well known player here with plans to build out a fleet of electric vans for Amazon. Another player is ready to join the fight. Reuters reported yesterday that General Motors is working on a electric van for the commercial market. Five sources reveal that the van - codenamed BV1 - is expected to go into…

"You just keep doing what you do, and we'll keep building cars you want to buy." -- Honda Translates to: Just keep believing that Detroit is worthless, because we'll sell you a car instead. --or-- We're better off without Detroit anyway. Or, Detroit builds cars no one wants to buy. It's the over all tone that pisses me off. This is the kind of shady business I've bitched about for years. It seesk to benefit from Detroit's loss, as usual. I mean really; 60% of the country hates the automakers anyway and now it seems that these companies are…

General Motors has put a rush on the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra to counter Ford's F-150. According to Reuters, GM has pushed up the launch date of their next-generation pickups, codenamed T1XX, by nine months to the fall of 2018. The new trucks will undergo a diet much like the new F-150. Full-size SUVs will follow a year after. While this will trail the next F-150 by four years, supplier sources says GM has a lot in store for its next-generation trucks, including a ten-speed automatic being jointly developed with Ford, direct-injection, turbocharging, and auto stop/start technologies. GM's Lordstown facility has been sold to startup Lordstown Motors. Lordstown Motors will produce the Workhorse Endurance pickup truck, an all-electric truck, at the site. The Endurance has all-wheel drive via 4 motors, one for each wheel. It also has outlets to allow for the use of power tools.
