Life goals

We're officially in the "holiday season" which means the suicide rate is going to go up drastically, so what better time to reminisce about the goals you set for yourself as a child or that you're going to fail to achieve in the future. (That sounded bitter didn't it?) Goals as a child (we'll define "child" as 15 and under because it seems like a nice cutoff) --Become an astronaut --Be a published author --Invade Iceland Sadly those are the only two goals I set for myself that I still remember. Goals as an adult --Be a published author (at least this time I have some completed material) --Get a degree in something (later decided to be journalism) --Be…

so yeah its been over a year since my last relationship and not for lack of trying....it seems like no matter how hard i try (or dont try as has been suggested to me) i cannot even seem to find any decent normal guy that is interested in me...i look pretty much anywhere and im fairly open minded when it comes to at least goin on a date with someone and seeing where it goes but all its been for the past year is me getting led on and played or just plain shut down by anyone...at this point its become a really sore spot in my life and ive become more and more depressed to the point where almost nothing makes me happy anymore and i just feel like im running out of possiblitie…

My Motor Trend subscription is up and I'm looking to purchase another year of it along with another magazine (I have a free subscription for winning a Choppin' Competition a while back). Which of the above is your favorite? Which would you recommend? I'm sure I've left several choices out, so feel free to vote 'Other' and specify. Thanks! Bimmer

Name the car given. It can be any General Motors car from 2000-present, and can be found on NetCarShow.com. The person who correctly guesses the car gets to choose the next car to have others guess, but have the car cropped to give only a preview! If possible, without giving away the car, give a specific detail (s) to separate the car, making it easier, and not so vague. Along with the car, state the year it was officially shown by GM, may it be as a concept or production vehicle. NO SPY SHOTS! DO not post your preview until the person who posted thecar says whether or not it is correct. After a certain amount of guesses, the poster of the previewed car can give a second …

I have to say it, as odd as it is for me to admit this, but I really do like the Saturn ION. But, in Red Line Quad Coupe form only. When I went to Ft. Wayne to the Saturn dealership and gave them my number to contact me for when the Astra arrives, I sat in one. Know what? I loved the center mounted gauge cluster and the wonderful Recaro bucket seats up front. The interior plastics don't feel harsh and cheap now, and have nice graining. The dash plastics in the ION feel better than those in the Cobalt. They don't sound hollow, and feel semirubberized. The steering wheel could be adjusted for any position and not block the guages, and, of course, I loved the amber…

I almost fell out of my drivers side window when I noticed this Chevrolet advertisement on a billboard parallel to I-85 in Charlotte NC. The ad is sponsored by Sonny Hancock Chevrolet. I'm home for a week. But when I go back to Charlotte, I *WILL* get a picture, you can bet on it! I was LOVING every minute of it! I mean, just with the term 'yuppie' alone they have what, like 85% of Toyota's clientele captured. EDIT: Der, I spelled Yankee wrong... LOL.

So, we have been having some good discussions here, some a little bit heated, some that bring a lot of light to the subject. to lighten thing sup a bit we bring you Dream car garage, Snap On truck edition. My old boss from several years ago used to love to scuba dive. He found an entirely intact Snap on truck full of tools off of a bridge on a fairly deep river that was a tributary to lake Michigan. Cold water kept the tools in decent shape, he was able to actually turn several of them back in to Snap On for exchange. Guy from Snap On was like "wow, this is some unique stuff, tools we have not sold since the 1950's." This is your chance to let the little k…

I wanted to get this up yesterday, in honor of 9/11, but I was having internet issues at my house. I know these usually adhere to a very strict set of rules, but I'm going to play a little looser with this round. I'm giving you 10(!) choices, so build your list with the most freedom-ringing, pavement-pulverizing, bad-attitude machines you can! Rules- 1) Maximum of 10 cars. 2) These are your ONLY vehicles. 3) Only Domestic-branded cars sold in YOUR market. 4) Any era is allowed. 5) You can choose a maximum of 2 special cars- concepts, one-off builds, etc. Have fun and Happy 'Murica!!

Nothing very exciting, and I admit I muttered 'mechanical a$$hole' after I found a few bugs, but how much can you expect from a 20-yr old truck that's been beaten & abused? 1990 Chevy, 350, 4-spd auto, 4WD, RC/SB, black, red velour interior (reeks of smoke), power windows & locks, tilt, aftermarket radio w/ 8-disc CD changer. Clock says 108K.... I dunno.... Wipers are pretty choppy (not just the blades), switching to high beams shuts the headlights OFF, plow lights don't seem to work, it's wearing wide street tires, no tailpipes- so it RUMBLES.... it is what it is, and as long as it has traction & heat, it'll make me money. A new 2008 Camry Hybrid in Jasper Pearl with tan leather, look what he paid for it 33,500, 2K over sticker on a loaded Camry hybrid goes for 31K was this guy on crack who bought. People really would pay over sticker on an ugly boring midsizer? What kind of dumb-f*cker a-buys a Toyota and then pays more than its worth. Wasn't like it was a somewhat cool Land Cruiser or 4Runner but a Camry Hybrid give me a an f*cking break. Toyota buyers, figures. So what do you guys think? There's just no words.... I remember in my Integra days, when the stock wheels were all stolen and the car was left on bricks. Or when it was broken into downtown to steal some BS beat-up leather jacket (and a few of my mixtapes, which really hurt). Then after 4 years, when the car itself was stolen (with my backpack inside of it, which had my favorite sketchbook and a notebook full of ideas)...the two times that sandwiched the break-in had me angry that I couldn't hear a thing. Can't forget how the Pontiac was busted into for a crappy aftermarket stereo. I didn't care about the stereo, but did they have to tear my dash panel up? That's a rare &#…

http://www.cbc.ca/cp/Oddities/070403/K040302AU.html ABOARD TRAIN V150, France (AP) - A high-speed French train with a souped-up engine has broken the world speed record for conventional rail trains, hitting 570 kilometres an hour. The black-and-chrome train with three double-decker cars, named the V150, bettered the previous record of 515.3 km/h. However, it fell just short of the ultimate record set by Japan's magnetically levitated train, which reached 581 km/h in 2003. note: That's about 350 mph.

Post one of several... On more than one occasion, I was asked by locals if I was Greek. In fact, I am not. One could take that, though, to mean I'd be welcome there, and I'd certainly consider a move to Greece if circumstances would merit so dramatic a life-change. It's an amazing country full of amazing people - direct and quite frank, but friendly and warm even to strangers and foreigners. We left Saint Louis for Atlanta at 10:00 am on September 13th, where we waited for seven hours for our overnight flight to Athens. It was an unpleasant flight - ten-plus hours with an unhappy newborn and a 2-y/o who liked to kick seats immediately behind me - there …

What a way to start a holiday..... I got word this morning that an old friend of mine was killed in an accident at home. I don't know the entire details. He is survived by his partner of 12+ years. What I'm thankful for, more than anything else, is the love and devotion from my partner Albert. Through the most trying of times he is there with me ready to do whatever needs to be done to get through... and he deserves a lot of credit for putting up with a grump like me. I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving holiday. I plan on laying low the rest of the week. Try not to fight too much.

After my two recent experiences with car buying, I got to thinking: both myself and my wife could have ended up with very different cars because it was a tough back-and-forth decision. Maybe it could be fun talking about what we're driving in an alternate universe where the final choice went the other way! What's your realistic alternate universe garage? You can go by real life buying experience or just conjecture based on your budget. What are the pros and cons of this alternate universe? Is the grass greener on the other side? (No, your alternate universe self can't be a millionaire celebrity. Realistic entries only!)

Grieving her 11-year-old daughter's suicide Father's brush with police, bullies' taunts and threats to her new puppy gradually sapped a Winnipeg girl of the will to live By JULIUS STRAUSS Friday, October 7, 2005 Page A1 WINNIPEG -- For 11-year-old Kathleen Beardy it was all simply too much. First she watched as her father Kelly was handcuffed and dragged from the family home by two police officers. Then she was forced to endure the seemingly endless taunts of neighbourhood bullies in her tough Winnipeg district. Finally, her delight when she bought a small puppy for $2 turned to dismay as bullies made off with her new pet, telling her th…

So im finishing up my last english class of high school, and we're working on alot of shirt stories, most of them pretty boring. Our latest one is "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson. I love it! it has the craziest plot twist, and contrasts a "civilized" small american town with the barbarian nature that embodies every american, and holds a message that we ignore violence and suffering until it personally affects us. ive read it a few times, and everytime i read it i discover more symbolism, and im usually not this much into English stories. This is one of the weirdest cases ever - almost to the point of having been forgotten. The little girl was slain in Colorado. Evidently, the family hails from the Atlanta suburbs, moved to Colorado and has since moved back. It also appears that her mother has passed away due to illness in the intervening time such that she isn't around to see someone brought to justice. Obviously, with no leads, the parents were viewed as suspects. The person that has been captured is a 42 year old school teacher from another Atlanta suburb. What a relief to see that someone may be brought to justice. What a sick individual to have done something like this. What a weird situta…

For me at least, Cheers and Gears has always been a reader/user-oriented site, a place where everyone is involved in someway. So, since I know I'm taking my affinity for automotive journalism as something that could become a loving, paying career someday in the near future, I'd like to know how much automotive journalism matters to one person: you. What you would like to see different? What do you like about what automotive journalists are currently up to? Personally, I think automotive journalism has its place and I can think of ways it can evolve and progress, but this isn't about what I think. This is about what you think. As for why I decided to open this topic up f…

I like potholes, I really do...especially the ones on the Lucerne..in fact I wouldn't even mind a set and I don't mind if people do it to there cars if done right. A dark blue 300C with 4 ventiports on each side that looked like arrow heads is cool. But this...is just stupid. Those round aftermarket ones...I see them everywhere. 4 on each side of a 4-banger 90's Accord, 3 on each side of a new 4-banger Camry..and the worst by far... 4 of them on each side of a 90's A4 and another 4 on the rear lower bumper. Do people even know what they mean when they slap these things on? According to this guy his older A4 was packing a W12 or something.

NEW YORK - Jim Ammons grumbles to himself every time he fills up his Ford Expedition, but he says gas prices would have to almost quadruple to $10 a gallon before he’d ditch his SUV. Still, paying $55 to fill his 20 gallon tank isn’t easy for the information specialist. “This right here is catastrophic for a lot of families,” Ammons, 54, said this week at a Houston Chevron station that was charging $2.65 a gallon for regular unleaded. “A lot of them have to choose: Do I buy food, do I send my kids to school or do I fill up my tank?” That choice may soon get a lot more difficult. The steep rise in oil prices to $90 a barrel over the past month means American consumers a…

As a presidential election year, 2012 was marked by wall-to-wall news coverage of the primary and general elections. On Election Day, the only people who believed that Mitt Romney, taken from a cast of unelectable Republican candidates, was going to win the presidency over Barack Obama was the Romney campaign and Fox News viewers. Mass shootings, at a Batman screening in Aurora, Colorado, in July and then the unfathomable massacre of children at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, in December shook our sensibilities and sense of security. The war in Afghanistan, America’s second longest war next to Vietnam, persisted with a planned pullout scheduled i…

just watched MISSISSIPPI BURNING easily one of the best movies ever. extremely good drama. tremendous acting. wonderful actors in their prime. but honestly. I found that one thing I was struggling with the WHOLE MOVIE. ..... A very young Sandra Bullock covered in sweat or a young Ashley Judd covered in sweat? tough choices. seen any movies like that where you JUST had to decide which is better?

Not sure how strange a question this is but here goes... I was wondering have there been any mainstream black rock or metal bands? ("Black" as in race.) I figure if there have been white rappers, black rockers can't be too out of the question, can they?

So, since we may not get many more big snow storms before winter ends, I grabbed a few this morning...I took some artistic ones too which I'll post later after I finish adjusting/framing them. 15 inches of snow from this one.

Just an observation. At time of writing this, 14 out of 69 posts today were GM focused. I'm just throwing this out there: Is C&G becoming more a general automotive interest(and much not related to anything automotive) forum rather than a GM 'cheers and gears' forum? Was it always this way? Does it matter? ( And for the record, I'm as 'guilty' as anyone else).

Didn't know where to put this. But went to the autoshow this past weekend. Costs more to get in, less stuff. The entire convention center floor was not even utilized this time around (mfr's not ponying up for space, or the cost was too high). Hardly any concept cars. To put a new Focus ST on a platform does not make it a concept car! I thought I would spout some miscellaneous ramblings about the things I observed. By alphabet...........

Has anyone noticed how they keep adding all these new features to Facebook that make it easier for people to know every little detail about yourself? Just this morning, I logged in and there's a new feature called "News Feed" that highlights everything you have done recently on facebook...posting on walls, commenting on pictures, accepting invitations, etc. Talk about stalkerish. The only feature that was cool was adding photos...everything since then has been unnecessary. There are some people that update that profile badge thing every day, making sure everyone knows their whereabouts. I haven't used it once. I've heard Facebook has ties to the CIA and that it's …

Here goes.. 5-series (best all-rounder, especially 535i) E-class (solid, everything from diesel to the 6.3) M (competitive numbers, lacking character, a bit "thin") A6 (lacking in numbers, but classy and sophisticated) STS (compelling with new V6, bold and brash) GS (compelling with V6, gutless V8, pointless V8h, refined, dull) S80 (nice) RL (Honda Legend) S-type (ritzy styling, dated) I excluded midsized entry-lux or faux-lux sedans like ES350, G35, MKZ, TL, CTS, Passat 3.6, 9-5, etc.

This car looks exactly like our old Concorde before the transformation. Camino, I don't know how much you will like this but I love it. The C pillar and window setup looks like the Holdens. This car is nice, minus the ugly rims, oddly placed Buick portholes on a Chrysler, and what I think is a hood scoop. Anyways you have your opinion. But if I still had our old Concorde, I would be taking a Chopsaw to it as well. I love it. Here is the link for the pics. El Concorde

Okay, I've had the '96 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham for a little over a month now and other than giving it a quick washing it once, I haven't done much to it - though it needs some TLC and soon. The black sierra grain leather is in pretty good shape for it's age, though it is dry and hard. I know it needs a good cleaning and then conditioning, and hopefully that will make it more appealing to the eye and maybe more supple. Anyone have some product suggestions and/or methods I should use to clean and condition the leather? I'm use to dealing with leather in new cars - so the methods & products I have I don't think will give me the results I want. Also, the car was …

Well this week the Prizm accident was finally settled for 1,494.66, including keeping the car. Not what I wanted but better than what they were going to give me. I found out that the original offer was not for $1,500 but for $1,015 - $100 to keep the car...so $915 I had wanted $2,425 but I just couldn't get that price from them. As it terns out, cruise control, which was optional only on LSi models was factory installed on this base model...I found the bad news out from the original owner. It looked like I'd be stuck with a base model offer of...well...$h! However I must extend a huge thank you to GM. I called them up several weeks ago asking how I …

I got a summer internship in Des Moines, but the place I'm staying only has dial-up internet, so I doubt I will be using the internet much if at all this summer. It's going to be an adjustment because I usually check C&G every night. So if I go up missing here for a while, that's where I am...without the internet. About the only chance I'll get to go online is when I go home or if I drive up to ISU to visit friends up there who have it. So as my buddy would say, "Welp, schee ya!"...but I'll be back in full force in August! Hopefully I don't miss out on some good spies of the Silverado and Sierra.

I really wanted to get the SKY a personalized license plate, but could never decide on one thing and never really liked any of the suggestions I got from family & friends. Since I'm planning to part with the SKY, it is no longer a desire. However, seeing as how I intend to get a certain type of vehicle <not mentioning b/c I want to see what you posters think my suggestion means first> in 2009 or as a 2010, I've started playing with some ideas. Look at the picture I attached and tell me what you think it means and if you like it (NJ only allows up to 7 characters/spaces, FYI).

So it's about 4:45 this afternoon. I have work at 5 but we need to pick the Prizm up from the shop, we finally had the front tires replaced and front end alignment done. We turn off onto the main road (110). She's driving the Intrepid. We come to the left turn we need to take to get to the shop. This road, despite being fairly heavily used, is not particularly wide. There's a school bus at the end of the road wanted to turn right, and there's not enough room for us to get past, so she has her turn signal on and waits for someone to let us all go. After a minute someone flashes us to so that the bus can turn and we can go. As this is about to happen 2 cars from behind us g…

I guess I'm conservative with cars...DUH. Well, I think about the rental cars out there. Once put into service, they don't know who will be driving it and how and I think they change the oil the very first time at around 7,000 miles, per the owner's manual. When I got my new car, I drove it real "easy" the first 1,000 miles or so, mixing both city and highway driving. Then, I took it in for a "break in" oil and filter change at about 1,500 miles and then returned to a regimen of changes every 2,500 miles or so. The car has been awesome. I really believe that any "impurities" in the oil or the engine will be flushed out with an early oil change and that things will…

So yesterday we went to get the T&C out of the tow yard where it was being kept. Assuming it was drivable the plan was for me to drive it home with my girlfriend and mom following behind me. We get to yard, pay the bill and my girlfriend and I go to the van. It's way at the corner of the yard against a fence and about 6 inches away from some smashed up Elantra. I get in and start it up, then slowly back it out. I hear dragging and she points out the exhaust is on the ground...oh goodie. I move the van to an open space and notice that the force of the impact knocked it off of the hangers...no big deal. I get under the van and look around under it while I'm putting the …
