So for the second time in six months my Impala has been the victim of the CURSE. My car was parked in front of a friend's house last night when some dough head in a big GMC Sierra 2500 decided to do a 3-point turn and backed right into my car's left front fender. The upshot is that at the least, the fender is f@#ked in every way imaginable. Driving with a learners permit and didn't even feel the impact. Also the bumper probably needs to be replaced too since the little mounting holes for the wheel well liner are completely torn and deformed. I've no idea how fast the truck was backing up but I would hope that the unibody hasn't been somehow damaged. Regardless, I'm …

No one ahead of me on the road, but a person waits until I'm "right there" to pull out from a side road in front of me, then drives 5-10 mph under the limit on a clear day, causing traffic to bunch up behind me. And it only happens when I need to be somewhere. Sigh.

No high speed internet for me. Verizon hasn't upgraded the lines here yet -so that's out. So I call Comcast, which is like saying I called China, you end up talking with a bazillion people who don't talk to each other just to get a rough idea of what it takes to get service. So they send this guy out to "survey" the job - I hear nothing for days. Today, I get a letter via snail mail to tell me that these criminals want $875.00 just to run a few hundred feet of cable to my house! Then, they expect me to pay them at least another $50.00 per month for as long as I want service! Can you say "BITE ME"?

So you've lived your life thinking as many Americans that the CHevrolet Chevette and Citation are two of the most ugyl cars ever made, huh? (not my opinion but happens ot be popular opinion these days) Well, all you guys know that despite my dislike for 99% of Honda & Toyota products I like a few Nissan/Infiniti cars/trucks and have a weak spot ofr old 60s/70s/80s RWD Nissans that were imported here as Datsuns. And yet look at these two horrible cars that Datsun madein the 80s. Ugly Chevette wannabe Frumpy Citation Wannabe

Be it fond memories or helping your dad keep the hunk of junk running, what cars/trucks do you remember mostly from your youth that your parents owned? I remember my dad's 84 Sierra Classic, 76 Ford Maverick coupe, 89 Chevy S-10 Blazer and my mom's 75 Ford Maverick Sedan. EDIT: We also had an 85? Oldsmobile Cutlass, but I remember me and my brother bitching about having to close the big doors. Other than that it was a great car and my mom loved it.

The Year Is: 1989 The year is 1989. You're a snow plow contractor and you've been noticing an uptick in the number of people with smaller lots and driveways that your full sized pickup doesn't fit in so well. You hate to turn down good business, but your current solution is lacking in traction. You decide to try a midsized or smaller SUV for these smaller jobs and see how it works out. Besides, you still have your full sized truck for big jobs so it's not like this one is going to be clearing any airport runways or anything. But then again, that is a lot of square footage... 1989 Toyota 4Runner 1989 Suzuki Sidekick 1989 Range Rover 1989 Nissan Pathfinder…

As I drive around, of course I'm always observing vehicles around me, it's some sort of obsession I have. So I got thinking of things about current design details that so many manufacturers share. I was wondering, who was the first? A. Plastic covered bumpers B. 'Round' tailights, meaning this overdone trend of round within a larger form. C. Rear spoilers D. Huge headlights....will this ever go away? E. Wedge/triganular tailights....I have grown to dislike this shape....almost every car does it. F. Five spoke wheels...has become so generic.

I'm working on another article for the C&G Feature Articles section and I want to try something different this time around. My idea is that I'd "interview" a few of you guys via PM using some questions that I'd integrate into the article. The subject is currently concerning GM and the media (it might change but I have good feeling about it right now). I haven't lined up the questions or anything yet but I'd just want to get an idea of who'd be interested in participating. I may or may not use all of you guys depending on how long I want to make this. I'm planning on having this article done as early as Sunday or late as W…

Linkypoo Some I disagree with, many I'm sure a lot of you will disagree with. Many of the cars on the list, the author, "Dickhead" Dan Neil, bitches about fuel economy, especially on the more modern cars. I do agree with him on the neutered Corvette and a few of the others, but I really disagree on the Corvair, Explorer (it probably kept Ford afloat after the 1996 Taurus debacle) and the EV1, as well as a few others. The EV1 wasn't a terrible car, it was terribly handled by GM.

I found this pic of a Cadillac/Buick-Pontiac-GMC dealership in Vancouver WA. What do you guys think? Going forward, do you think this type of efficient bundling of brands would allow the brands to remain distinctive? I actually do. That's providing the dealership features separate entrances for the brand showrooms and separate service advisors/areas for Cadillac owners & BPG owners. The backend would benefit by using the same lot, management, including the service/technician dept and facilities. The distinction would remain but make it convenient for BPG shoppers to "browse" Cadillac and eventually trade-up. It would also allow Cadillac to move more toward…

I think I've run this one before, but we have quite a few new people.Birth order is interesting and actually regarded as being somewhat psychologically valid. That being said, where are you in the birth order, how many kids are there and what are the genders of those older and younger than you? Also, which ones do you get along and not get along with? My answer: I'm the youngest of 2 - same parents for both - oldest is a brother. Do not get along with him (have not spoken with him since 1995, or thereabouts).

so wisely i chose to suspend my direct tv last week. of course, until the other day, i didn't have any converter boxes either. well, i have one of them hooked up now. should be interesting to see if i am a go. does one need a whole new antennae also? i have the plasma, which has the digital tuner. I think i just need an antennae for that. i have 4 other TV's, of which 2 of them for now I will have converters for. I have an antennae hooked up to the first one which I believe is an HD antennae, but we'll see. Big question, is the converter box still worthless without a proper antennae? That's what i don't get. It's coming! Are you CONVERTED?

Hopefully the ones who hit the ditch as a result learned a leason, but I doubt it. In downtown Des Moines last night, I was almost hit by three different vehicles. I'm going to give Des Moines the benefit of the doubt there since it was probably the alcohol is everyone's system down there that was doing the driving, but it didn't help to sway me to the side of the Iowans. I've been following this a lot more recently and many medical professionals are voicing serious concerns that this flu epidemic isn't something we should take lightly. Some are estimating that as many as 300 million people could die and the flu could spread across the entire globe in a matter of weeks due to air travel. Here's a post I found on another message board: Here's a map of where the current flu outbreaks are. I love Italian food. Very high on my list. Growing up with Italian parents, I never went without expertly prepared pasta, chicken or veal dishes. However, I never have a craving for Italian food. But I will go into Greek food withdrawals. So, I'd say Greek. The meats and poultry are succulent, the vegetables, rice and potatoes tend to be seasoned without being offensively strong. Not to mention the tzatziki, hummus or baklava. It's also pretty good for you. Look at those 100 year old ladies with orthopedic shoes and black dresses hanging out in Mykonos or Santorini...see? I can't believe what just happened to me. This kind of crap only happens on TV, until now. So I was walking home from the bar with a friend and we thought we might go buy some... herbs. He knew a park where people normally sell so we went there and asked somebody. Guy ended up leading us to a girl who phoned a friend. This should have been hint #1. Why do we need to go somewhere? Nope, we're drunk, and too trusting. Proceed! So the guy proceeds to tell us that the seller is really paranoid and he needs to do the deal for us. http://maine.craigslist.org/car/679606893.html This ad is for a car he "found in the woods," meaning it doesn't belong to him. He also does not even say that these woods are on property that he may own. And he wants to charge you to look at it. Then what? If you decide you like it he'll sell you the car he doesn't own and therefore has zero legal right to sell? (all this aside from the fact that the car looks like it was hit by a locomotive and then sat in the ocean for 40 years) And people from Maine wonder why the rest of the country thinks they're all mentally retarded inbreds and make fun of them!

This is another idea we've been considering. (Told you I was throwing ideas out tonight) She might want to keep her Cav, which would require a few bucks, but the car is in good shape, and would be very doable. She suggest another 4 door Cav (Guess she's hanging around me too much), so we can have 2 4dr family cars again. (since the wagon is gone) Nutty as the idea sounds, it's not that bad of an idea. Heck, I already have two-what's another one? They are cheap used (would be looking at 03-05), and by now, I really know my way around them. And I could have it paid off pretty quick. Could even get a "sporty" one.... Many could say...what about a Cobalt? Well…

At about 11 pm on July 25, 1956, 50 years ago today, the Italian passenger liner Andrea Doria was sailing off of Nantucket, Mass. and due in to NY the following morning. She had essentially crossed the entire Atlantic. However, as the area was blanketed in fog and there was confusion aboard both ships who saw each other's lights up ahead, the Swedish liner Stockholm, with a bow designed to cut through ice, broadsided the Andrea Doria, cutting a gash below the water line that meant her end. About 50 people perished...all at the site of impact. Miraculously, unlike other more rapid sinkings, the Andrea Doria went under at 10:09 am the next day. Furthermore, the French l…

As some of you may know cars are my life. If I had to choose betwen cars and women I would choose cars. Cars are the only thing that kept me going through all my depressed suicidal times... There is nothing I love more than cars...I have been stressing a long time now because I have been trying to find my car, but the car I want isn't easy to find. When I found my car I was planning on paying for it and my parents promised me as a graduation present (my only one) to co-sign the loan for me when I find my car, because obviously I don't have credit which would make it nearly impossible to find a loan (which I am experiencing right now). Well, I found my car. The…

Almost a decade has passed since I officially joined Cheers and Gears in 2005. In that time, I've graduated from high school, quit work, started work, started college, and what seems like several dozen cars have been in my ownership. Despite the multitude of variables in my life right up until today, this website has strangely been one reliable constant. I've even contributed to this site beyond my mere musings with a small host of articles and opinion pieces that have managed to find their way onto the front page of the site. While Cheers and Gears has been a constant in my life, my activity 'round these here parts has been fairly -- hmmmmm -- quiet here lately, more va…

Anyone with info to share on the 1990 & 1991 Buick Reatta (coupe or convertible, it doesn't matter)? Of course I know that you should stay away from the '88 & '89 models with the touch screen radio & hvac controls (this option disappeared for the '90 model year). I'm looking for whatever info you can provide. TIA!!!

I'm going to have to give up one of my Malamute pups. They have started to fight and draw blood on each other. I did some research online last night and it seems that they aren't likely to get over it - ever. It can be controlled with intensive training and forced separation but they could never be trusted without supervision. That wouldn't be fair to them or to me. So, with great sadness, I'm going to have to choose between them. Anyone else feel like their life is 100% ?

So I was driving down the road and my turn is coming up, so I put on my blinker to turn left. This girl (I doubt she was any older than 16) is in the opposite lane that I'm about to turn into, also wanting to turn left. She has a stopsign, and I don't. So I begin to turn left, and low and behold she begins to pull forward right as I begin to turn. I see this, and honk and slow down. Meanwhile she gives me the "what the hell are you doing?" pose with her two hands up in the air while I mouth some less than nice words. So, luckily by honking she actually stopped what she was doing (but didn't realize she was in the wrong, dumb bitch) and I didn't join the ever-growing group…

A '93 Honda CB750. Not fully a sport bike, not really a cruiser either, but I think it's a pretty cool combination. Powerful little thing too. ---original post--- Hint 1: 1993 model Hint 2: 4 cyl Hint 3: He didn't sell his Grand Prix Hint 4: It's a '93 4-cyl Honda, but I'm happy for him and not upset. So... what is it?

I can not for the life of me figure out what this Pontiac is. I've narrowed it down to a '66, '67, or '68 model and I'm leaning toward a Catalina or possibly a Tempest, but every one has different headlights and taillights from this one. How many models did Pontiac have in the 60s?? I've counted GTO, Tempest, Firebird, Catalina, Beaumont, Laurentian, Bonneville, Grand Prix, Ventura, Parisienne, Strato Chief and probably others I'm forgetting. This is driving me nuts! The pics

In case you missed it, this past Saturday (April 21) was Record Store Day. I hope you visited your local (read: non-chain) record store and perused their selection of new and used records (or CDs, if you must). Anything to enhance your music collection and spur the local economy. Saturday afternoon, I added my two-cents (or $20, I forget) picking up a few vinyl treasures and I can't wait for a moment alone in my house to listen to George Carlin's "Seven Words You Can't Say on TV" from the "Class Clown" record. Last fall, my buddy and I took out love of records to another level. In one fourteen-hour period, we traveled through three states and visited six records stores, …

I started thinking the other day, "What would the American auto industry be like today if Chrysler hadn't bought American Motors way back in '87?" Nowadays, the American economy could probably benefit from having a fourth automaker. Obviously AMC was in some deep crap twenty years ago, but as I've read, some analysts believe that the company would have turned itself around had it not been sold to Chrysler. The company had to continuously innovate to compete with the Big Three, plus they had Jeep...so what do you guys think would have happened to it by now?

the wiki on the "Grumman LLV" says it uses the iron duke and sits on an s-10 platform... why doesn't GM come up with an updated model with say... a 1.8L - 2.2L maybe with BAS model to replace these? I heard that the gov't has a test facility for new models on NPR. this would give GM some sure business and reduce gov't gas waste. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grumman_LLV

McDonald's ad made a meal of driving safety Christine Sams December 2, 2007 A McDONALD'S advertisement showing a carload of male teenagers ordering a drive-through meal is off the air after an investigation by an industry watchdog. The advertisement, which shows a P-plater who drives his friends to the fast food restaurant after getting his licence, will not be screened again following claims it promoted unsafe driving. After airing between November 4 and 12 it was investigated by the Advertising Standards Bureau. "I think it was one of the most complained about for the month,"Advertising Standards Bureau chief executive officer Fiona Jolly said. "The complaints …

so, if I was to consider an H3 as my next daily driver, would that be absurd? consider this, they are leasing cheap right now. and they have utility. mpg is better than say, a tahoe and not really that much worse than an SRX or acadia or edge or explorer or something. I would be looking at a base model H3 with a stick. I'd really like a stick again. No doubt I would bear wrath from a couple coworkers, who despise cars and SUV's in particular, and such. Screw them I say. I'll run over their little MAAAZZZZZZdahs. Isn't an H3 just a tarted up trailblazer with greater off road capability? they aren't too big, and they really look cool, and its a GM product. …

Cory, You might remember about 6 months or so ago I sent your sketches to Ed Welburn, well I never heard anything back. Now that I am a GM god :AH-HA_wink:, Ed himself reads and answers my e-mails when I send them now. I discussed your sketches with him in an E-Mail a week or so ago, please see Ed's response below. give me 5 - 10 sketches and send them to my yahoo email at , I have limited web and email access where I am now, so that's a better email address for me. I will send them directly to Ed Welburn himself, also supply me with your e-mail address too, so I can forward it to Ed so he can give you his thoughts on them directly. Please note, …

I'm going to California for 10 days with my wife in April. Landing in LA. Running up Coast Highway, Monterey/Carmel, Napa, flying out of San Francisco. Also doing a 1day Skip Barber course at Laguna Seca Was also considering renting an XLR or something, just for a day, but the cost is ludicrous. ($350/day). Now thinking perhaps a Mustang convertible for the week. Looking for some suggestions/advice: - anyone been to Skip Barber, any experiences to share - anyone know where I can rent an XLR/Corvette for a reasonable amount? - anyone know of anyone renting CTS-V's? - anyone care to suggest any 'must see' places/things in the LA area?(other than Hollywood/B…

Dear Diary: Massachusetts Winters Aug. 12 - Moved into our new home in Massachusetts . It is so beautiful here. The hills and river valleys are so picturesque. I have a beautiful old oak tree in my front yard. Can hardly wait to see the change in the seasons. This is truly God's Country. Oct. 14 - Massachusetts is such a gorgeous place to live, one of the real special places on Earth. The leaves are turning a multitude of different colors. I love all of the shades of reds, oranges and yellows, they are so bright. I want to walk through all of the beautiful hills and spot some white tail deer.. They are so graceful, cer…

There comes a time when every paint job has reached the end of its natural life. Assuming you care about these kinds of things, what do you do? Wrap it or paint it? When it comes down to it your costs will be about even so it’s really a question of preference. If you’re looking a truly unique pattern or finish (like the sticker bomb wrap above) then wrapping s the way to go but nothing beats paint for durability. So, lay or spray? Weigh in here and we’ll let you know the results next week.

After a piece on this here just posted, C&D did an instrumented test on what may very well be the exact same car. Here's the link for those who want to check it out- C&D IS200 Test The review and impressions were very similar. The car has a base price of $42,945. As-tested was $47,235. So let's imagine you're buying a premium/lux sedan in the 43-48K range. Rules- 1) Car must be a 2016 or 2017 MY on sale now. 2) Must be a 4 door body style. I will allow a hatch/wagon. 3) Must be a sport-lux/premium/sport sedan of some sort. 4) MSRP MUST be at least $43,000, but no more than $48,000.

So, to expand on the first part of this, we are doing something a little different. In Part 1, you had a total to spend using the New Car Average Transaction Price multiplied to cover 5 vehicles. This round, you will be limited to a per car amount of $36,495. There is no limit to how cheap your selections can be, but they can't be any more than the average price. Rules- 1) Must be New cars on sale NOW 2017 or 2018 Model Year 2) Cars must be available in YOUR market 3) These are your only vehicles 4) You are granted 5 choices 5) I will allow ONE non-mainstream production car- motorcycle, trike, side-x-side, etc 6) MSRP can be NO MO…
