So I was driving down the road and my turn is coming up, so I put on my blinker to turn left. This girl (I doubt she was any older than 16) is in the opposite lane that I'm about to turn into, also wanting to turn left. She has a stopsign, and I don't. So I begin to turn left, and low and behold she begins to pull forward right as I begin to turn. I see this, and honk and slow down. Meanwhile she gives me the "what the hell are you doing?" pose with her two hands up in the air while I mouth some less than nice words. So, luckily by honking she actually stopped what she was doing (but didn't realize she was in the wrong, dumb bitch) and I didn't join the ever-growing group…

Check em out http://www.mph-online.com/web/spyphotos/0023 I think it is a good blend of the popular Range Rover and the old Freelander front. This should be a big hit if it drives well. Even though the last one didn't sell, today is different with the X3 and others doing well

The Ford Taurus came out in 1986. I remember seeing it for the first time. I thought it was THE most featureless, generic space pod of a car I'd ever seen...(NO GRILLE?), but sales took off. The car sort of defined Ford for 2 decades... but the Taurus wasn't the first modern-day experiment by Ford with aerodynamics... does anyone remember the 1983 Thunderbird? That car, to me, was a revelation after the horribly boxy '80-'82 T-bird (which only looked good in dark colors, with steel top and the sport aluminum wheels with blackwalls) Is there any glimmer of love at all here for the '83 Thunderbird? With the 130 hp 302 or the turbo 4 cylinder, it was a decent performer…

My worst two- Taking the Miata down my favorite exit ramp (marked 25 MPH) at 73 miles per hour after I pulled off the shaved autocross tires and put on all seasons...one VERY impressive four wheel drift at high speed about two weeks ago. Would have hated to call the insurance company back... Was driving to work about two years ago, took the Miata...which was a mistake, as it was a level two snow emergency. Good looking thirty something blonde in a Hyundai Tiberon wanted to race me, for some unknown reason i raced her...not thinking that this time I DID have the shaved autocross tires (read-slicks on all 4 corners during a blizzard)...had about three car lengths pulled…

I guess, I will be one of the 1st to kiss my ass goodbye! Discovery or doom? Collider stirs debate Chapter 2: Cutting through the hype over black holes and future benefits By Alan Boyle Science editor MSNBC updated 5:03 p.m. ET, Mon., Sept. 8, 2008 Will the Large Hadron Collider save the world, or destroy it? As the atom-smasher at Europe's CERN research center is readied for its official startup on Wednesday, researchers might wish that the general public was captivated by the quest for the Higgs boson, the search for supersymmetric particles and even the evidence for extra dimensions. But if the feedback so far is any guide, the real headline-grabber…

Between the death of a beloved/valued member on one of my heart boards and a phone call from a friend who I haven't heard from in a long time because he is no longer on any message board, it has been quite an interesting week. These instances reminded me of several members from all of the different boards who either are truly no longer with us, or just have "fallen off the face of the earth" due to not posting or visiting the forums anymore.... When I notice people haven't posted in a while, I'll wonder what happened to 'em and hope/pray that all is well. Heh ... given a few other things going on now and over the course of the last month or so, I've thought about takin…

New spyware could prevent drivers from speeding CTV.ca News Staff Many motorists would balk at the idea of an electronic back-seat driver that forcefully prevents them from speeding. But a new device being road-tested by Transport Canada could mean breaking the speed limit will no longer be an option. Using global positioning satellite technology and a digital speed-limit map, the device makes it difficult for drivers to press down on the accelerator once they go above a certain speed limit. The idea is sure to appeal to many road-safety experts, but the researcher in charge of the project admits some drivers will not welcome the idea of a machine that forces…

Do Something about it? (link) I've been having recent fantacies of driving my new Camaro, but dread the idea of the possibility that I might have to install a front license plate on it. So... I came up with an idea of replacing the front plate with a decal that could go on the windshield, and thought I'd research CA law for $h!s-n-giggles to see exactly why a front plate is required and if such a decal idea would work. Well... I didn't find that information, because I ran into the above link (petition) instead. Who knows if the petition is worth it, or if it's even legit, but I wouldn't mind getting rid of the stupid law!

I think I've run this one before, but we have quite a few new people.Birth order is interesting and actually regarded as being somewhat psychologically valid. That being said, where are you in the birth order, how many kids are there and what are the genders of those older and younger than you? Also, which ones do you get along and not get along with? My answer: I'm the youngest of 2 - same parents for both - oldest is a brother. Do not get along with him (have not spoken with him since 1995, or thereabouts).

In case you missed it, this past Saturday (April 21) was Record Store Day. I hope you visited your local (read: non-chain) record store and perused their selection of new and used records (or CDs, if you must). Anything to enhance your music collection and spur the local economy. Saturday afternoon, I added my two-cents (or $20, I forget) picking up a few vinyl treasures and I can't wait for a moment alone in my house to listen to George Carlin's "Seven Words You Can't Say on TV" from the "Class Clown" record. Last fall, my buddy and I took out love of records to another level. In one fourteen-hour period, we traveled through three states and visited six records stores, …

I have a search set up on Autotrader to send me Avalanche listings. One of the most common eyeroll descriptions I see for Avalanches is "Fuel Sipper" or "best fuel economy" or some variant. While the Avlanche might be decent as far as trucks of that vintage go.... it's not like it's a Volt in the MPG department.... it's not even a Chevy SS in the MPG department.... and putting that in the ad isn't fooling anyone. What doozies do you see in car ads that are wildly inappropriate to the vehicle they are selling?

I was checking through Craigslist, which is pretty addictive if you ask me, and came across this ad 1989 Camaro Yeah, I know, it's another 3rd gen Camaro. But, but, but, it's another convertible. It looks damn nice and the price is very reasonable. The only problem is that I have a full driveway already, not to mention garage. I have no plans to buy this one, unless of course the Cavalier sells real quick. If that were to happen, I might just pick this one up and consider selling my 89 RS Convertible. Hmmmmm...... Think Tammy would agree to it???

Yeah, it was brave-but I ended up with more than I bargined for.... I was coming out of the local Kroger with dinner a few days ago....And saw a purse snatching in progress from a 80 year old lady. I decided to help, and was able to run him down and tackle at the knees. I got the purse back, but failed to realize he had something else in his other hand: A wooden cane (with a metal top) While getting back up, he nailed me twice in the back, and then once more for good measure (I guess) once I fell to the ground). Lucky for me I fell on the purse, so once people noticed what happened, he just ran. And they haven't caught him (I guessing they never will, either) …

Well, if this doesn't solidify the fact that the GT500 is a porky, underperforming "performance" car, I don't know what does: http://www.ls1gto.com/forums/showthread.php?t=83159 4130lbs (and it's not even the convert!), 56/44 weight distribution, 1/4 mile in 13.1 and $47k+ does not seem to appealing to me. A 2006 GTO with a good driver and a couple simple bolt-ons will beat the GT500 for $15k less, and that's before dealer markups. And what's the point of having 500HP if it's made at redline? Unless the fuel cut-off is well above redline, the 500HP is only available for a very short time.

Recently have become mildly obsessed with the twilight era for vintage junkyards, which is happening right now. I have developed a small cyber toolbox (GoogleMaps, GlobeXplorer, MapQuest, Switchboard) to gather before & after aerial pics of junkyards across the U.S. Mostly this is to document where they were and their size, but it's also useful to today's scroungers to assess whether a given sight-unseen yard today looks worth the trip. I have gotten adept at recognizing ex-yards from space. Many times these automotive DisneyWorlds disappear when one's back it turned, leaving but a faint scar on the landscape. I've been in about 15 different yards over the years- I …

It doesn't bother me, but it makes me perplexed as to what I emit. Most of the time, I'm in my own world and someone interrupts my silence. Just yesterday, I got asked about train routes on Portland's light rail, and I was wearing a Montreal t-shirt, for God's sake. One day, when I did live up here in the mid-90s, I got asked directions on the way to work, during my lunch hour and going home from work. THREE times in a day. The funniest: - asked for directions in Buenos Aires in November 2005 when I went to South America - asked for directions in Munich, Germany while walking through a rural suburb last month How about you? Do people approach you out of the clear…

Not that I'd ever try to out run a State Trooper since a radio is quicker than any car but a Charger Statie is much more intimidating than a Crown Vic wiht a 4.6 Mod motor. Ford needs to redesign the Crown Vic. Keep it BOF, RWD & V8 obviously but put in the 5.4 so it does 0-60 in less than like 8 sec. otherwise these Dodges will eat up a good portion of the Interceptor Ford's sales. This thing is SICK looking in the Mass Navy-Blue & Battleship Gray combo.

Just for kicks ~ Take what you paid for your daily driver, then look up it's trade in average value on kbb.com. Take that difference (your vehicle's depreciation), and divide it by the miles you've driven it (to the nearest 500 or 1000 should be fine). This gives you a cost per mile for ownership (obviously separate from maintenance/repairs). Me ~ '04 Silverado 2500HD, $15035 difference, 133K miles = 11 cents/mile.

Hey everybody, I'm taking a trip home to Ohio from New Jersey for the first weekend in December. I am really really interested in purchasing a Cruze Eco - probably an automatic, as my boyfriend doesn't know how to drive manual. I doubt I'd be able to find a Cruze Eco for rent, but I was looking to rent a Cruze, hopefully with the 1.4 turbo for my trip. Does anyone know which rental agency have Cruze's in their fleet? If I can't find a Cruze I'll just be taking the old Grand Prix for another trip! I am about 9-12 months away from looking for a new car, and I figured, a 550 mile stint behind the wheel would tell me how I like the Cruze, as far as comfort and travel…

Sir Christopher Lee, whose death at the age of 93 was announced on June 11, was an actor who used the modern art of cinema to evoke ancient feelings. Standing at six foot five and with a voice like chilled silver, Lee was a druid capable of inspiring deep terror, a conjuror whose skills belonged just as much to the bards of some long forgotten land as they did to the studios of Hammer. Sir Christopher Lee, a man of grand performances and operatic portrayals, brought something unique and ancient to our screens.

I just got a lube oil and filter this morning. With my coupon, it came to about $23, and I got Valvoline 10W-30. For this service, I have repeatedly gone to this nearby store from a national chain. They know me there and treat me fairly well. However, they price other stuff too highly, probably to cover their "loss leaders." For stuff which I think is more powertrain-specific (tune-up, trans fluid, and even a coolant change), I wait for a good price deal to come from a GM dealership, or two, that I have often used and have gotten to know. I see no point in giving this business to one of the chains, when a GM dealership is charging the same...or even slightly less. …

I honest-to-goodness think Pontiac made an error in judgement by settling for a cheeply-rebadged Equniox over going its own direction with a refined, improved Aztek. And before someone makes a crack about personality being something the ugly girls have, I'll remind you the ugliness is truly only skin deep on this thing. A coworker was test driving a customer's '04 Mountaineer today after replacing the transmission, when a Caravan ran a stop sign and t-boned him HARD in the driver's side, popping the head curtains (which probably saved his life). It sent the big Mountaineer over on its right side, sliding down the street, until it caught something, flipped into the air and landed ON TOP OF a Chevy pickup. The Mercury is smashed to smithereens, every single panel. The doctors say he broke no bones, and he'll only be sore for a few days. The center post on his side is a couple of inches into the driver's seat... unbelievable. He is a lucky man to have been driving such a strong SUV.

It is a 6-seater 5-door hatch, roughly the size of the CR-V except shorter and more of a wagon. It uses a 2.0L or 2.4L K-series engine. I don't know the weight, but it probably weighs a little less and due to the shape likely will get 2-3 mpg better than the CR-V. The middle seat in each row slides backwards 27cm or 17cm to make it more comfortable for the person sitting there. Likely the middle seats will be occupied by children, but when needed (and if you don't mind having your arm up against somebody else's) seating capacity for 6 would be…

Are any of you really versatile; you can see both the good and bad of both sides of any situation? And, if you don't initially see one side of the situation, once somebody else explains the "new" side, you're able to understand it almost instantaneously? I'm like this. I'm just curious how unique a trait it is. It's good in some situations, where you're looking for a problem; but, in others, it's like you have ADD and don't know where to side and why, and you seem to constantly be contradicting yourself.

That time of year again, opening day is tomorrow. Well, the real opening day, those two games in Tokyo dont count. Hopefully this season ends a little better for my Cubbies, the 3-game sweep out of the playoffs sucked. A World Series title would be great, a pennant would be ok. It will be nice watching the Cards lose. Predictions: AL East - Red Sox AL Central - Indians AL West - Mariners AL Wild Card - Tigers NL East - Mets NL Central - Cubs NL West - Rockies NL Wild Card - Phillies World Series - Cubs over Indians

Fact A: the new Camry is an ugly, bloated looking whale of a car. Fact B: they are building Camrys in the Subaru plant in Lafayette, IN, the same plant where they build the Legacy/Outback (and Tribeca) I present to you evidence that ugly is contagious among cars built in the same plant. Subaru legacy, previous & current gen side by side.

http://autos.msn.com/advice/article.aspx?contentid=4024974 it's time we get a national standard for emissions etc. and fine and withhold federal highway money from states that enact their own standards.it's bad enough we are legislating diesels out of our country because of them, but now we care creating a whole legion of cars you can't buy or drive all across the usa. that is wrong and it costs everyone far too much money. we need to make a law saying cars can be sold and driven in all 50 states, to protect resale values and owner investments. this is bull$h!. no special emmissions laws for anyone. or, slap a 5,000 clean air tax per car on any c…

My Cav avoided tree limbs, hail, and some pretty nasty weather. Good part. After coming back from an errand (only gone about an hour), I find two cars parked drunkly next to my car (I couldn't get into it to even move it) And you know what that means. I have a marks on both doors.....and on the rear panel.... I won't be able to tell how bad until morning... Part I noticed most- they made a nice cut into the rub strip on the driver's side...it's small (only about 4 inches big), but you can really see it. On the strip-will touch up paint work? or something to make it look better? Damn I'm pissed..... I tried to find the owners of these cars, but no one …

We are all going to post our best photos in this thread from today's scavenger hunt. It took place from 9:00am - 2:00pm & we ended up partnering up. Marcia wanted nothing to do with it but me & S.P. used the Q45 and teamed up while XP & his G/F Amanda used her 2005 Impala & Dodgefan & his G/F Jessica (notice she joined the forum recently) used the Intrepid. Wait until the 3 teams have posted their best 40 photos and a list of other interesting finds, then choose who you think found the most interesting & bizzare photo ops. & items.

Hey there everyone... not sure if any of you noticed my disappearance the last 5/6 days or not, but life has been really crazy lately. Let's start with the good news - I've been recalled back to work. Last Monday afternoon I received a letter from the boss of the HR dept stating one of my co-workers decided to retire effective September 1, 2009 and I was being offered the first right of refusal for her job (which I quickly called to accept). So it looks like my unemployment will be short (June 24-August 30) and I'll be going back for year #8 at the high school I've been teaching at (and hopefully with this new position be around for a lot longer). Now for the bad ne…

Um OK I had a customer come in this afternoon with a Sable, saying someone backed into him in a parking lot. He needed an estimate. He said the hood wouldn't open. I was expecting a need to call for a rental car by his initial description. When I got out there, there was a tiny spot of black rubber residue on his right side fender from the Toyota SUV's tire that backed into him, no dent. I couldn't think of a reason why the hood would be affected from such miniscule contact, so I stood at the hood and asked the customer to pull the release while I pulled out every trick I could think of to persuade the hood to open. Nothing worked. I asked the customer to trade …

As you can see I've started you next to the missing children's office (heh.) So you bolt through the Macomb Hall doors and blaze past the Ford trucks, the black Mustang GT on the stand and the black Ford GT on the stand. You get momentarily sidetracked by Jeeps huge rocks and waterfall display. "Ohh purdy" you say. You then snap out of it and cut across the corner of the Chevy display next to the orange HHR and the Hybrid Tahoe that IS there. You can see *it* now and you start crying. You reach the turn table and walk around it once very slowly. You can then see that you are overcome and must run to the bathroom before you soil yourself. On the way back you notice the Hu…

So I thought that now might be a good time to replace my '05 Cobalt with a new one - I know, how often do people do that? ...but it's been good to me. Priced out an '09 with pretty much the same options, trading in the old one, and some GM Visa points used, and still... the payment over 48 months is $413. My payment now is $444. Wow, such a compelling deal GM... give me a break! How do they expect to come out of a slump if they have news like this going on and they have no incentives? ps. and this was on a day where they brought in 'deal-makers' from the US to sell them at no-haggle prices. The previous quote was MORE than what I'm paying now! They quoted $465/mo.

In light of the whole Toyota Tacoma massive buyback by Toyota..... Let's say you come across someone who does not know of this event and is selling their Tacoma for fairly cheap. You buy it and in turn, sell it to Toyota for more than what you paid. I wonder.... Would it be worth it? Just a thought. Nothing more.

It's been hibernating in the barn for a few months now due to a massive oil leak. I've been enjoying driving the wagon, so I haven't done anything about it until a few weeks ago. I filled it up with oil and moved it over a clean part of the floor to try to locate the leak. Now I have run it and let it sit in the same spot for most of a month. Guess what? No freakin leak! How the hell does that happen? The entire font undercarriage is soaked with oil from when this happened, yet now it doesn't leak. Have to get to the bottom of this.

This Dream Garage thread is going to be similar to one I did recently where you have to pick from certain choices to fill certain criteria, or roles. But this time it will be based on nationality rather than price. You will have mostly the same roles in this one- * One off-road vehicle- Must be a truck or SUV. * One daily driver- Absolutely NO dedicated sports cars or sports coupes- so no Mustang, Camaro, Chally, etc. * One weekend/fun car- Anything sporty goes for this one, but must be street legal. * One track car- Anything intended mostly, or exclusively for track use here- Atoms, BAC Monos, etc. Does not have to be street legal. * One fam…

Great weather lately...cool in the low 60s at night, highs only in the mid '80s. Nice and breezy this morning, slightly chilly about 75 at 10 am..went out in jeans and a sweatshirt, drove w/ the windows down. I like this time of year.

I'm debating if I should continue where I stopped with the rough draft so I can maybe send this in to Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine. (Now, if I can pick a four leaf clover out of a lucky Irish field...)

This past weekend, on the 7th of May 2006 I joined XP715 and SpeedingPenguin in Welsley Mass at the site of an old Olds dealer for a fantastic car show. XP715 Brought his beater, the one he stores at my house. It's the 1977 Cutlass Supreme we're always talking about. They were very polite to us despite the car looking like a well worn daily driver and not some trailer queen. The local Oldsmobile Club even took photos of it for posterity. About 70% of the show consisted of late 60s to early 70s Cutlasses/442s. I was dissapointed to see only a few 50s cars and just two Pre-WWII cars. Here's neat highlights. T!G|-|T WH1P$ Best of show award goes to: …

Alright, so there's another teacher I work with that owns a 2003 or 2004 Chrylser Sebring convertible. This is her 2nd one and she's had her share of repair horrors (1st one had too many tranny problems). She wants a new convertible sometime this summer. Another colleague bought a 2006 Toyota Solara convertible last summer and loves it; no problems and claims because it's a Toyota. Now my 1st colleague has owned nothing buy domestic cars and is considering her first foreign car. She needs trunk room for her beach stuff and backseat room for her young niece and nephew. That rules out the Pontiac G6. I showed her the Saab 9-3 convertible, but the price is more than s…

Alright, the old Lumina is getting long in the tooth (210,000) and it is time to start looking for a new ride. I have been looking at the LaCrosse as a potential replacement. I really like the 3.8 for the balance of gas economy and power. I will use this car for my daily driver and I average 200 miles a day for work. Does anyone here own one or have any experiences with the LaCrosse? I was looking at the CXL trim level and will most likely buy one that is off lease <30,000 miles.

..As to why the elderly drive so slowly. It's not because they want to be safe. It's not because their reactions are slower. It's not even because they may be a bit senile. It's the fact they're cheap and want to save every penny they can on gas without having to downgrade into a compact. Driving this Cutlass, this is what I've come up with. Seriously, it has to be true. They generally still drive large boats that chug fuel like no tomorrow. These Cutlasses are known for being own by little old ladies. Not only did we buy it off of one, I passed one the other day that looked to be 80 in a Cutlass similar to mine, but in 'elderly ecstatic' light blue. In their infinite wis…
