Well fly, I'm right on your heals. Woke up Saturday to my car alarm remote beaping at me. It was really windy when I woke up so I figured that the wind had just rocked the car enough to set the preshock on the alarm off, so I just got into the shower to get ready for work and ignored it. I got out of my apartment a little after 9 and when I got down to my car I did a quick walk around just to make sure. Sure enough, someone had backed into my Impala. Right on the corner of the back bumper on the drivers side. No note either. Not a huge smack I guess, but I'm going to need a new lower bumper cover and paint. It is getting a little wierd though. Since I got that ca…

I know we have some dealer-linked people here so maybe I can be helped out. My dad wants a 2013 Avalanche LTZ. We live in Canada, and therefore, the pricing is terrible. So we're looking cross-border to save ~20 grand. We've contacted some dealers already but none will play ball because we're Canadian. Even when we say that one of our Amerifriend's can do the purchase, the dealers still clam up. My dad has procrastinated on the purchase, stock is dwindling, and his list of preferences is fairly specific. I'm posting this to see if there's someone here who wants to make a sale. Or potentially help us arrange one. Do Want 4WD White Diamond tri-coat exterior Ebony …

My girlfriend is looking into an Acadia, Fly, or someone in Florida, could you tell me what an Acadia is going for? She is looking for an SLT-1 with Skyscape and leather. no DVD, or Nav. We want to see the difference in price betwen Florida and NY. THe reason being we plan on moving to Fl at some point and are debating whether it would be more cost effective to wait to buy and Acadia in FL, vs. NY.

Well, I'm proud of myself. I happened by a used car dealership and wound up taking a very serious look at the car I covet, a Mini Cooper. This particular Cooper was an S with the stick, sunroof and the bonnet stripes that I absolutely hate. The very first thing I checked out was the back seat, and there is indeed enough room for a forward facing child seat, which is a good thing. Next was the driver's seat, specifically the driving position, which at first was terrible, I couldn't see anything but the visor when looking straigh ahead, but after adjusting the seat hight I got a good line of sight. Then came the drive, totally amazing, I had forgotten what its like to …

Last night I went out with our boy in his 2007 acura tl (little over 5500 miles). While in the car I was struck by how many things just don’t fit right, how it squeaks over bumps, and how it has issues. 1. When accelerating it makes a grinding sound. Something he is taking it in for. 2. The right rear quarter panel on the outside does not lineup with the bumper. Bad enough that he is going to make the dealer fix it. He has seen multiple other tls with the same problem so he is not sure they can line it up. 3. The dash is lumpy on the passenger’s side. 4. The upper part of center console is wavy where it meets the dash. It looks like it’s been left out in the su…

I am fearing our 3rd car, a Taurus wagon, has transaxle issues, as a filter/fluid change today did not remedy shifting issues it intermittently has. Trans has no adjustment capabilities; it was suggested that a cracked filter may suck air; old filter showed no signs (it's plastic, floating in a sea of liquid- how's it going to crack?)… but pan gasket was fairly weepy anyway. It's a '95, bought it cheap a year & a half ago (from a friend) with 70K on it, now has 86K. Not worth rebuilding the transaxle. Not worth it as a 'local only' car, either. Haven't yet determined a budget, but would like to get something with actual cargo space. I know that's not easy to …

The other day I was out walking and something popped into my head about GM. Everyone says they have to many brands, including many within GM. I am not sure that they necessarily have to many brands as much as they have to many brands fighting for the same market. Perhaps GM needs to separate the brands more and going to the extreme as my mind often does I came up with the following to separate out the brands as best as they can be (albeit in a fantasy world): Chevrolet Core values: volume, affordability, practicality Core vehicles: FWD compact sedan/coupe, FWD midsize sedan/coupe, RWD volume large sedan Key competitors: Toyota, Honda, Ford...(other mainstream b…

It's been a while since I've last checked in so here's a short update since my last post. After a little over 2 years with Car and Driver, I am now back on the hunt for employment/trying to get back into the grind as a freelancer. Unfortunately, my position (and a dozen others) was cut two weeks ago due to a restructuring effort. It was sudden and completely unexpected for those who were let go and those who weren't. While I'm sad to leave the company, I'm remaining positive with the hope that better opportunities lie ahead and wish everyone there well. I couldn't have asked for better coworkers. That said, I'm still in Michigan—For now. Josh and I have been m…

Being chatted up while in line...it can be tolerable or it can be annoying. It's tolerable only when there is NO ulterior motive. That is, you find out that the person you are in line next to is from the same part of the country, went to a high school or college close to the one you went to, if not the SAME one, or is in the same occupation. The conversation is not strained. It ranges from annoying to sickening when you have NOTHING in common with the person and there is a general edginess about it (read "multi-level.") Yeah, I know, I've complained about this before. Last Friday, I'm in line for a Safeway deli sandwich (they can be damn good). This guy behind me…

Here are a few notes to customers of cellular providers of the great ol' US of A. I will edit/change these as necessary as I find a means to vent here every night instead of the bottom of a Bud Light bottle. 1) If Customer Service tells you something, it's probably not true at all. 2). If Customer Service directs you to your local carriers store for an insurance claim, its NEVER true. 3) Just because Customer Service tells you that you are eligible for instant savings on a new handset at your nearest local store, chances are you infact are not eligible for SHIT! 4) Do not take it out on us poor reps, as we are not the people that make sensative policy decisio…

Well Direct TV just put XM on the music channels. I actually use them often through the sterio. So anybody have any favorites ? Im only assuming they are titled the same nationally. Ive been listening to Deep Tracks thats been playing some stuff I forgot all about. Right now Pink Floyd from a BBC recording in 1970, wow, I think Im having a flashback. In the early 70's I used to listen to this station that came out of RPI college in Troy NY, those college students always played this more progressive non commercial music and thats what its like listening to this now. It was like the underground back then.

What a lovely day in the village of Ramsaytown it is, today. Snow storm. Electical short. Limited heat. No water. No car. That's what I'm experiencing at my house right now. Starting last night around midnight, we recieved a snow storm. It was enough for Brookville to cancel school today. There's about 6" of new snow over the few inches we already had. My mom's Blazer had trouble making it out the driveway this morning. It's very cold as well. Earlier last night, a wire shorted out somewhere in our house. The entire second story as well as the ceiling lights on the first story and a few other things are now out. It has happened before, but it was …

Flames lost again and the Ducks move on. The west is going to get its ass handed to it on a plate again this year, as they will again be the division with "the cinderella team" going to the finals. Well, at leats i still have the Sens to cheer for, and it will be cool if Jersey and Carolina beat each other up so badly that it will eliminate their chances of going to the finals. I felt this deserves its own thread, as the subject matter is slightly different than part one.

Seems like everyone around me lately seems to be picking up some kind of Neon. I'm not sure why though. It started with a coworker picking up a 95. Then my neighbor around the corner picked up a 99. Now a good friend of mine just picked up a 98 Neon with 75k for 900 bucks (not bad, I say) for a beater. Now he wants me to get one to replace the aged cav wagon.... THough it did get me thinking... The wife had a 95, which had issues to last the least..(head gasket (twice), elec. issues, ate batteries.... Aside from the issues though, it was fun to drive (and even more fun to abuse toward the end) and it got kick butt milage...even while putting 2-3 quar…

Anyways, I'm asking because my dad always buys the cheap stuff... regular Pennzoil 5w30, and that's what I have to put in my Millenia (due for a change, according to what the guy said). However, I want to put the best stuff possibly in it, including high mileage stuff if it really is all that much better for an engine like mine. But yeah... I looked up the "Special T" T-Type and all I found was that it had a Grand National exterior with a T-Type interior. Anyone know anymore about this like production numbers or what colours they came in. That Regal T-Type outside of my work looks to fit that description except for the fact that it is grey. I believe the guy may know what he has got because it has a T-Type dash pad cover and a sticker on the window with the National 6 logo.

ADELAIDE, Australia - An Australian farmer held hostage in Mali for 12 days by a gang of men who had posed as an online love interest has urged others to be careful when seeking romance on the Internet. Des Gregor, 56, traveled to the West African nation last month to meet his supposed bride, whom he had met on the Internet, and collect a dowry of gold bars worth $85,000. But when he arrived, the wheat and sheep farmer was abducted by a gang of armed bandits who bound him, beat him with a machete and stole his cash and credit cards. I have a membership to 24 Hour Fitness, which I bought in Northern California in 1996. They charge my bank account, you guessed it, $ 24 a month. They are all over the West and in other states as well, judging from the map. I also belong to Bally's which I bought when I moved to the Seattle area(there are about 10 in Oregon, too). It's such a cheap renewal now that I just pay it because I would spend more in join-up fees if I moved. For example, ATL and FL have Bally's, but not 24 Hour Fitness. OK, the "low cost" gyms have problems of their own...the clientele they attract. In June, before moving up North, I went to 24 Hour Fitness the evening that a friend was goi…

I was disappointed (though not surprised) when I read a post by Josh Oliver on camaroz28.com which, referring to C&G, stated, "That website is garbage." Here is a direct link to the topic; scroll down to Josh's post, which is #22. I realize that there's been "bad blood" between Josh and C&G for a long time, but the reason I'm now pointing out his post is that I can't seem to view his own website, thegmsource.com. Is it still active? Lately, Josh has started several topics on camaroz28.com, so perhaps that has become his new outlet.

WASHINGTON - From higher electric bills to more expensive gasoline, the possible economic cost of tackling global warming is driving the debate as climate change takes center stage in Congress. Legislation set for Senate debate Monday would require a reduction in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from power plants, refineries, factories and transportation. The goal is to cut heat-trapping pollution by two-thirds by midcentury. With gasoline at $4 per gallon and home heating and cooling costs soaring, it is getting harder to sell a bill that would transform the country's energy industries and — as critics will argue — cause energy prices to rise even more. Se…

In other words: great MPGs without having to settle for a common "econobox". Notice the ad in question sits next to an ad for the 1959 Buicks... it's meant to be.

I was over to the Barnes & Noble today, looking at magazines of different genres, and the September, 2009 issue of Hot Rod caught my eye. They have a big tribute article to Pontiac, and some really cool artwork involving new ideas for customizing older Chevys. I am primarily thinking of Camino with this thread, but of course I think everyone else here would love it, too. Check it out. Also, for behind-closed-doors Design Center photo hounds like me, the newest issue of Collectible Automobile has a fantastic spread on the '73-'77 Pontiac A-body cars, LeMans, GTO, Can Am and Grand Am. Some of the design proposals are damn scrumptious!

Let's counter the other thread with the Jalopnik-sourced article for a second. In your opinion, what was one of the worst cars ever built that everyone seemed to buy in droves? I'm going to have to go with the Mustang II. Yeah, this and the Pinto are some of the most successful lamentable American cars that just about everyone loves to bash. But, honestly, they deserve it. First year 'Stang IIs didn't have a V8 option and came standard with a four-cylinder engine that made an oh-so-mighty 88 horsepower. Ford had to wind up scrambling to re-engineer the Mustang II to accept the 302 V8 for next year's model and, at that point, it only made 140 tired and weary horses …

Trying to shut down C&G and proclaim to legions of Americans "I am Fart King of America!" http://forums.autoweek.com/thread.jspa?for...22100&tstart=15

The race was run on Sunday, Oct 10. Those of you with access to Speed Channel will be able to see a 2 hour presentation on October 17 at 3PM ET. I won't give away any spoilers, but here's an incident from the opening lap of the race. Fabian Coulthard suffers a tire failure and rolls through the gravel several times. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2j1Ra1wDl4 "I knew it was missing some panels when I got out without opening the door." Exxon Sees Record Profits for Any U.S. Co. By STEVE QUINN AP Business Writer DALLAS Exxon Mobil Corp. posted record profits for any U.S. company on Monday -- $10.71 billion for the fourth quarter and $36.13 billion for the year -- as the world's biggest publicly traded oil company benefited from high oil and gas prices and demand for refined products. The results exceeded Wall Street expectations and Exxon shares rose nearly 3 percent in morning trading. The company's earnings amounted to $1.71 per share for the October- December quarter, up 27 percent from $8.42 billion, or $1.30 per share, in the year ago quarter. The result topped the then-record quarterly profit …

I know I am not the most popular person around these here parts. I was. But I am not now. I can see by the way of some of you refer to me when I am elsewhere. And. Though I have found a new home over at the GMI there are times I really miss the fun and friendships I made on this side of the GM pond. So to all, I apologize for all my ill will and unkind attitude towards you all. For those who felt hurt, bothered or offended by my actions I deeply apologize and hope you can forgive me. Maybe. Just maybe one day I will return and we can be one big happy family again. You are all truly the best people I could ever hope to meet. April Fools. You think I was serious? You …

With all these "car shopping" threads in here lately, I thought I'd try one with a cool car in it for a change. So I'm going along my training route on the bicycle on Thursday when I see this early 2nd gen Camaro sitting on some guy's front lawn for sale. I didn't get a very good look at it, but I knew how to get to it for when I could take a longer look. Today, I'm in the neighborhood and I swing by to see if I can talk to the owner and get a better idea of the car's condition. To keep things short, here's the data: It's a '72 Camaro - the typical early '70s dark brown with black stripes. My guess is, it's not a Z/28 or SS, but it has the split bumper Looks to be …

Well, somebody bought a new-style STS. Did you guys see the photos of David Arquette's silver STS after the head-on crash in L.A.? The front end's wiped out, but the doors look openable. He went head-on into some sort of Jeep, I think it was a Patriot.

Check out this TV report on massive cities the Chinese government is building that have no inhabitants: The reason is of course that construction activity boosts the country's GDP figures, even though by any measure this is insane. Be skeptical of China's quoted growth--a lot is illusory.

So I'm back after a few month sabatical and my life has changed considerably since I've last been at C&G. My relationship of three years ended rather suddenlty, though in reality it was heading downhill for a while. It was tough but ultimatley Kate and I ended it on good terms and after a few awkward months managed to succesfully transition ourselves to friend zone status. She is still one of my best friends and we still care deeply about eachother but our directions and goals in life were diverging. She moved out of our apartment July 4th weekend and I moved out at the end of the month since the lease was up. I moved from Westchester county into New York City, i…

Video: "Total Recall" featurette: Hover Car - Watch how the producers of the upcoming remake of "Total Recall" choose not to use CGI to create the hover cars used in the film and the technology they employed to make these cars "real". Link: http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/total-recall-2012/trailers/total-recall-featurette-hover-car-30145564.html\ *I've got to say I'm excited to see this remake. I know a lot of people, myself included, complain that Hollywood recycles more than creates today, but I was a fan of the original 1990 movie though the special effects were definitly not up to par in that movie. From the trailers I've been interested in seeing this futuristic …

Reddit — if you actually stay awake and pay attention to what's what around the world wide web — is typically a festering rathole, good for hosting line after spewing line of junk data. As a website that idenitfies itself as the leading middle-man for quote-unquote "social news" it brings the concept of citizen journalism to an all-time record low, and any content of actual relevance and solidity seems to give Gawker and its network of bastard children CSPAN-like levels of credibility in outright comparison. It's a forum for the huddled and uninformed, unwashed masses of the world with a hi-speed internet connection to make a poor and weak-hearted attempt to be informed a…

You bound up the steps into the gym two at a time, show the front desk chick your member number, and make your way down to the locker room to change. You're so ready to get on that stepper and show it who's boss. 20 minutes on the stepper, no problem. You stop at the water fountain for a sip, in your regular routine, then wash your hands and head back upstairs, two at a time, full of energy. You're no newbie. You mix it up a bit on the apparatus, suavely making your way around the room with a professional, seasoned face. You can't help but glance around at a few attractive people, but your brow remains furrowed, intent on working your muscles, building a better body…

Here we go again. It is 2007, and it is Toyota will be #1 manufacturer this year. The article is sickening, and while it bashes GM for building Big SUV's, it is praising Toy for building Macho, Turd. Morons. No mention about Toy's recalls either. These terrorist journalists should be whacked. #1 Toy-Boy-Ta Vote here, GM is lagging behind badly. See how bad people's perceptions are about quality. Being the "Resident Young Stickler" that I am ... I find it fascinating when I spot ads for cars that advertise for one year of car, but show a completely different year of the same car. Case in point: 1976 Des Moines Register ad Check out this, that a friend on the El Camino list posted: http://www.myelcamino.net/1976.htm ...and scroll down a little bit to the "Clean Sweep" ad. You see that " '76 Monte Carlo " they have pictured there? Well, I don't think it is; sure looks like a '75. But ... you be the judge and compare.... '75 MC rear (scroll down to bottom): http://www.chevyasylum.com/mcspotter/1975f.html '76 MC rear (scroll down to bottom): http://www.che…

Despite my user name and the title of the thread I really just wondered how many people are actually interested in customizing their interiors with dash kits, dash covers, colored LEDs, bezels, etc... Now, I am obviously in the business of catering to tuners, modders, enthusiasts what have you but the majority of people on the road, from you purists to your commuters, don't really seem to give a lick. Well, maybe they care about window tint but that is about the limit. So, what about you guys? Granted the audience here is a vastly different demographic than the general driving population, but I really respect the breadth, depth and passion of most of the users here so …

I'm thinking about putting vanity plates on my Camaros ('68 SS & '73 Z28/RS) but I can't think of anything really cool. Anybody have any ideas? EDIT: Basic specs: The '68 is a 350 4-speed car that is/will be more of a "classic" cruiser. The '73 houses a 406 with a Turbo350 transmission and is/will be more of a "custom" car. Neither will be too wild though, the plates will be NC plates which means 8 letters or less. A few pics:

Before I head to some cesspool like Yahoo Answers, I figured I'd try my question here. I'm working on a wheel safety booklet for a heavy equipment company. If a worker fails to deflate a tire before maintenance, it can explode and send them flying a considerable distance - in some cases, hundreds of feet. I have a chart of commonly used tire sizes, each with a 'energy ft/lbs' figure. For example, a 40 x 57 tire has 807,218 ft/lbs of energy when cold. What I'd like to know, is if anyone here knows if I can parallel these numbers with something a lay-person can understand. For example, if I can state something along the lines of a certain tire possessing the …
