MUSCAT, Oman - Oman evacuated tens of thousands of people today, suspended oil exports, and closed the major port of Sohar as a weakening Cyclone Gonu roared toward the Strait of Hormuz, the world's major transport artery for Persian Gulf oil. Oil prices rose amid forecasts that the storm, a rarity in the region, was barreling toward Iran. Link: http://www.delawareonline.com/apps/pbcs.dl...6/NEWS/70606019

I fly back to Germany this weekend to start my new job @ BMW ... I look forward to starting a new automotive chapter in my life ... I won't be around as much as I was in the past, to some I'm sure that is good news ... Just remember I was only a messenger ... I will miss the good folks @ GM, the bad ones, not so much ... 20 years is a long time at one company these days, but looking back on my career at GM, I had a blast and wouldn't trade my memories for anything ... I will keep my eye on GM, I worry for it's future. I will pop in from time to time on C&G, but will rarely post anymore ... To those of you going to BMW because of Pontiac's shutdown, I'll see you on…

Well, the great Las Vegas experiment is coming to an end! I've decided to go home.....and resurrect my life in southern California..... Basically, ever since The Big Crash that began back in October, I haven't been able to make the kind of money I need to pay 'da bills....and I'm too far behind on my mortgage to keep hoping and hoping that next month will be the month things turn around. I don't have that luxury any more. I made AWESOME money in June, July, August, and even decent money in September. If that trend had continued, I'd probably not be leaving. However, I have a few GREAT opportunities back in Orange County that are offering greater income potenti…

So just chillin' at home today and surfin' the web... went over to Craigslist.com and played around looking at different vehicles for sale. I decided to see what GMCs were listed and found this one: http://southjersey.craigslist.org/ctd/1054584216.html It's a 2001 GMC Sierra 2500 SLT Extended cab 4WD with 38,400 original miles for $12,900. Is this something I should look into? I'm questioning the 6.0L V8 and 2500 series - if it were a 1500 series with the 5.3L V8 I'd probably not be asking for any advice!! I don't really need a 2500 series, and the 6.0L V8 I think is overkill for my needs. However, for some reason I really like 2000-2002 GMC Sierras the best (m…

i just got back from 5 days in battle creek... most of you guys from michigan are probably wondering "why the hell would you go to battle creek?"... well i had a national gymnastics competition there... so i unfortunately was stuck there for 5 days... the place sucks... its boring as hell... the cereal city place run by keloggs is awful... the zoo is half decent... and every girl i saw except the ones from outside michigan was not attractive... but what i really want to share... is what happened in the rental car... we walk up to the Hertz counter... im fully expecting an impala or G6... so im prepared for a nice ride but a generally boring powertrain... and then i…

Saw two things this morning while running errands. First was a very old Chevrolet Suburban from the 1950's era in the process of being restored. It was on a trailer being towed someplace while I was driving on I5. Second thing was a Toyota Tacoma that had an interesting bumper sticker. Pro-America Buy America Anti-Trump So not a political statement or discussion I want to start, but I am interested in what others think is meant by the Pro-America/Buy America part of this. IMHO I find this a contradiction that they are driving a Toyota with that part of the bumper sticker. Thoughts?

For nearly 30 years, "play ball" on an early-May Friday night in Elgin has signaled the start of another softball season for my Dad's city softball team. Friday night, May 11, was no different. Unfortunately, Dad's team lost 20-5. Elgin Ind/Jake's Pizza started off well enough ... scoring 3 runs after 2 were out in the bottom of the 1st. But, a 6-run 4th and an 11-run 5th for the visitors wiped that away. Meanwhile, for the last few years, "play ball" on an early-May Tuesday night in Elgin has meant the start of the softball season for my brother-in-law's co-ed team. Tuesday night, May 8, they started the season with a 16-1 win. Tempco scored 2 in the 1st, 3 in the…

Ocn: Do you remember the Nomad at Carlisle with the pearl white paint at the GM nats show a while back? We were looking at the tint of that paint and it seemed to me that it had a slight blue tint to it. I'd like to find a stock white pearl that has that same look. Any ideas? Everyone: Please post any pics of cars in a factory white pearl, I'm trying to find one I really like. Thank to all in advance.

We've been all over various forms of hard rock, but we all have soft sides somewhere in our evil little hearts, right? As much as I listen to some of the hardest rock out there, I also love a good emotionally driven slow song, rock or otherwise. What about you? Right now, I am loving this song. It's one of the best I've heard.

I'll be in the Harrisburg/Carlisle area that afternoon, meeting up with someone to sell a part. Is there anything going on that I can make the trip more than just driving down 3 hours, then turning around to drive back another 3 hours. I plan on being there around 6 pm. If nothing else, I'd be willing to meet up with someone in the area.

Ok, I thought about this after my last vacation. I had Grand Prixs back to back in both FL and Atlanta, putting 1,700 miles on the first and 600 on the second one. (I took the Florida car to beautiful Pensacola and back). I've also rented about 10 other Grand Prixs, putting at least 700 miles on each one. When added up, it occurred to me I've exceeded 10,000 miles in rented Grand Prixs. Heck, getting into one and knowing all about them is so reflexive, that if I were to buy one it would be a "non-event." What types of rental "sleds" do you seem to get into most often?

I just got a lube oil and filter this morning. With my coupon, it came to about $23, and I got Valvoline 10W-30. For this service, I have repeatedly gone to this nearby store from a national chain. They know me there and treat me fairly well. However, they price other stuff too highly, probably to cover their "loss leaders." For stuff which I think is more powertrain-specific (tune-up, trans fluid, and even a coolant change), I wait for a good price deal to come from a GM dealership, or two, that I have often used and have gotten to know. I see no point in giving this business to one of the chains, when a GM dealership is charging the same...or even slightly less. …

So it's been raining since what seems like forever...I think Friday night. It's really grinding my gears. In the past week I've gone to start the Prizm and twice it wouldn't start. First time was corrosion all over teh negative connector and terminal (non on the new positive one). Cleaned it up and life was good until the 2nd time. Cleaned it some more and put some grease on it. Seemed fine until i went to run an errand this morning and it did the same thing. So, while there's a break in the rain, I go and have another look at this terminal connector. Turns out it too has cracked and is ready to break. Lovely. So since I need the car for today, I take the GM and get a…

As I noted, there has been an addition made to our driveway. I've posted about this car in particular a while back, while my friend was trying to sell it. Long story short, he no longer has a place to keep it. We have a big yard with lots of room... What's one more? Thus, it's technically not ours. Since he was unsuccessful in selling it, he sort of wants to fix it up and get it back on the road. It runs about as well as the Cutlass, perhaps a bit better, but isn't in nearly as good of condition. If we can get it to pass inspection (it atleast needs brakes), this might help my situation, effectively giving me another car to drive around in. This is a big "IF", however. …

Well upon going down to the dealer to get the oil changed in the Cavalier this morning, My dad went with me and we decided to wait for the car, so we browsed the showroom to kill time. We checked out a black 2007 Cobalt LT that 'twas fairly well equipped and remarked that it would probably be better for my mother than the Maxx, he current daily car... Both? I guess? I mean, just watch a few of these and tell me with a straight and honest face that you didn't giggle like a school girl at a One Direction concert at least one time. Here's a review for the Saturn L-Series that also informs us that the Catera was "Cadillac's Chris Gaines album." I have no words. This one ... would never meet John Davis's standards. No, not the one from the metal band that misspelled the name of a four-letter vegetable so that they could brand their music as edgy. If you want to see fanboyism, this is your video. Notice how he quickly passes by the GM dealer with a shaky camera declaring that nobody is there, yet pulls into the Toyota and Nissan dealers who were having tent sales luring people in with food and whatnot. Apparently this tool had a role in "Who Killed the Electric Car." Guess this video can't explain why GM's retail sales were up last month while Toyota was down. Even though he berates GM for discontinuing the EV1, notice how he parks next to a Tundra? Gotta love it. One of his quotes: "GM could make a difference, if it were honest and had not crushed the EV1. GM is evil, and has no intention to make the Volt. L…

A few pics I snapped today while visiting my girlfriend at her work - a local retirement home. A few hundred people live here and I would say a good 95% of the residents' vehicles are domestic. And before the 'fixed-income' talk comes up, its true, but their income is at a far higher level of being static than most people; this is an expensive place to live, so these aren't your poor, ill-educated old people living off government cheese like some editorials love to espouse about. You're looking at Buick, Mercs, Cadillacs, and Lincolns, typically no older than mid-90s. Take away the Centuries, and very few of the cars cost under $25,000. Besides those f…

Are any of you really versatile; you can see both the good and bad of both sides of any situation? And, if you don't initially see one side of the situation, once somebody else explains the "new" side, you're able to understand it almost instantaneously? I'm like this. I'm just curious how unique a trait it is. It's good in some situations, where you're looking for a problem; but, in others, it's like you have ADD and don't know where to side and why, and you seem to constantly be contradicting yourself.

I'm sick.. quite sick. I think everything is failing me at once. I went to the doctor yesterday after leaving work at lunch because I felt like major crap. Terribly sore throat and back, worst headache I've had in a long time, sore roof of my mouth (cut it open eating a burger Sunday night), swollen lymph nodes in my neck. Fun stuff. So the doc tells me I've got a throat infection, not strep but just like it. Along with strained muscles in my lower back (no idea how I did that). I get put on prescription meds (wow, I don't know if I've ever had to say that other than a couple other times in my life), and I'm feeling much better. Except for the fact that the preexistin…

Alright guys, I know at the old site we had a long section of someone's ride taken up with just automotive photography questions. I've created this topic to keep from getting to that. My guidelines (please disagree; add some) 1. Use the rule of thirds. divide the viewfinder mentally into 9 equal sections, at the intersection of the lines dividing it, thats where the focus should go 2. Make sure the car is going into the picture. if you are taking a pic of a car, make sure the car isnt on its way out of the picture, make it look like its coming into the picture and towards you 3. Try to use dramatic lighting, taking pictures at …

This "iffyness" on Zeta is making me want to give up on new cars. My whole life I have watched cars I like get cancelled and replaced by soulless FWD blobs. Then, GM comes-up with Zeta and all is well. Then, Zeta is put on hold. Then on hold again. I'm tired of freakin' waiting! At least old cars can bring a smile to my face. It was a 1987 Fleetwood Brougham d'Elegance, white with a white vinyl top, blue leather interior, blue pinstripping and the spanish-gold emblem package. 132,000 miles. Then years later I bought my tripple-silver 1986 Fleetwood Brougham, this one had 172,000 on the odometer. On top of sandbagging and evacuating my office today, I just heard that a tornado struck a boy scout camp in Western Iowa and flattened it, killing four scouts. Not that I'd ever try to out run a State Trooper since a radio is quicker than any car but a Charger Statie is much more intimidating than a Crown Vic wiht a 4.6 Mod motor. Ford needs to redesign the Crown Vic. Keep it BOF, RWD & V8 obviously but put in the 5.4 so it does 0-60 in less than like 8 sec. otherwise these Dodges will eat up a good portion of the Interceptor Ford's sales. This thing is SICK looking in the Mass Navy-Blue & Battleship Gray combo.

When I moved to Michigan for the second time, I felt pretty comfortable with what I was going to be doing and what my plans were. "I've done everything before," I thought, figuring that jumping back into everything would be as smooth as a BMW inline-6. The move? Super smooth. The finances? Oh so silky smooth. Getting back to work? As smooth as that ticking, knocking time bomb that is otherwise known as the Quad-4 found in my first car. From the very beginning, nothing was working in my favor. Trends changed, routes vanished, and nothing was there for me to find it. The one day I did see something? I didn't have a long enough lens to shoot. Someone else did and gave the wo…

Well, a few weeks back, when I was working (getting carts actually), I saw this lady in a Pacifica totally run into the rear end of a parked Suburban. She was trying to just pull into a parking spot and totally NAILED it. She parked at the end of the lot 'til the 'Burb pulled away (without a scratch OR notification of the accident), and I got to see her dented/scraped quarter-panel and shattered headlight. Then, tonight, I ran up to the autostore that's next door to my work. I'm walking out and CRASH! This lady in a S10 ran into the "Handicap Parking" pole! I went yesterday and looked at a 2001 Regal. 56k miles, $11 grand, very nice car. I was ready to sign the paperwork and drive it home for the first few miles. Then I got on the highway and heard some hellacious road noise. I had the air on max and the radio on and the noise was still pretty loud. I turned the fan and radion off, the noise was still there, it wasn't engine noise and wasn't wind around the a-pillar, my best guess was either shoddy repairs after an accident or crappy tires. I go back to the dealership and mentioned it to the salesman (I drove it solo) and he ran an AutoCheck, which came back clean, so I figured the culprit was the cheap ass Firestone F…

One of only a few tests I've seen with test results on the new 911 R- C&D 911 R Test Of course, this car is the anti-numbers sports car. Some may like that, others may not. Base price is $185,950, as-tested was $198,695. Now, this car is sold out already, and most brought far more than that, but were going to work with a range based off these numbers. Rules... 1) You choice must be a NEW, on-sale-now MY 2016 or 2017 sports/super car. 2) This is obviously a toy car. Assume your daily needs are already met. 3) Your car of choice MUST have an MSRP of at least $180,000 and NO MORE THAN $230,000.

Just for kicks ~ Take what you paid for your daily driver, then look up it's trade in average value on kbb.com. Take that difference (your vehicle's depreciation), and divide it by the miles you've driven it (to the nearest 500 or 1000 should be fine). This gives you a cost per mile for ownership (obviously separate from maintenance/repairs). Me ~ '04 Silverado 2500HD, $15035 difference, 133K miles = 11 cents/mile.

So OK, my neighbor (20-something with a wife and kid) comes running over and slams my doorbell. "Dude! Come look at my new car!" Poor kid's been trying to get out of an '88 Festiva he's been driving since his ZX2 engine died, which is fine... but he got... a...Scion xB. Dark blue. I mean, at least it's not one of those "special" colors, but omg. He told me to jump in, we took a ride around the block. I was hanging on to the "oh $h!" handle the whole time. He's happier 'n a hog in $h!. I'm kinda sad. You know that old joke about the kid on Christmas morning, throwing the toy aside while playing with the box? :AH-HA_wink:

As I mentioned in my "test drive review", I'm working to get my G6 approved now. However, my sister is the only barrier left. She insist that I need to work out the effective interest rates on my payments. I remember I did this stuff back in my engineering economics course, but that was like 2 years ago. Anyone help me out on this?

... there about 9 hours with the brood and a friend of one of the brood. Hot as hell, but some slight breezes & some cloud cover. Rode every coaster in the park... finally my 12-yr old has decided he's no longer going to refuse even those that make him nervous (he tends to over-analyse them as they thunder by overhead)- so it was the best trip there we've made. El Toro kicks ass. But the real purpose of mentioning the event is.... Great Adventure in the circa 90-degree heat.... is positively a Cornicopia of Breasts. Either there's something in the water these days.... or brassiere technology has improved in lockstep with -say- tire technology since the '80s. Or is i…

Well, you can choose to buy one Prius for about $25,000 or ten Tata Nanos for the same price. Which would it be? Pros: Prius: Good gas mileage Prius: You'll have celebrities wanting your car Tata: Prestige 2 cylinder engine Tata: You can have one hell of a good bumper car game Tata: You could say you've got a nice set of Tatas... Cons: Prius: Well, it's a Prius... Prius: Styled like a whale Tata: "What's style? Our engineers didn't know either." Tata: WTF is a Tata? (WHERE'D THE POLL GO?)

As you folk have realized by now, I like observing vehicles and pairing them up and asking our little community here which of the two they prefer to own. Anecdotes and opinions of which vehicle is preferred or disliked over the other is ALWAYS welcomed and ENCOURAGED! During my absence a couple of months ago for a few weeks, I saw several interesting movies with interesting cars...this week's comparison comes from the movie Grosse Pointe Blank. The two cars in question: 1995 Lincoln Town Car And a 1998 BMW 735iL While the movie does not really focus on the two cars, the two cars in question do have important symbolism roles... …

So here i am, 1 month away from graduating High School... Scary. A few months ago i applied to Adelphi University, for Criminal Justice... they told me at the time i was getting a scholarship for my academics, but didnt tell me how much. Tuition + fees comes to $24,000 a year, and without winning the lottery, there would be no way i could go. I applied for every financial aid i could, and since my family is pretty poor, i hoped that would help. Welllllllllllllllllllllll i just got the letter a few days ago... $13,000 from Adelphi for Academics $1,500 from a Federal SOEG Grant $5000 From NYS Tuition Assistance Program $4,750 from Federal Pell Grant grand tota…

I took the LaCrosse in for an oil change at the dealership on Saturday...based on time, not miles. I always seem to wind up talking to service advisors. For one thing, I seem to "file away" their comments and opinions on cars, maintenance, reputations, etc. This weekend, at the Pontiac-Buick-GMC dealership, I saw a used 2007 MC within viewing distance as he was writing up my LOF work ticket and I told him the decision process I went through in deciding on th Buick over the Chevy. He told me that it was a good choice, but that their experience with VVT has been virtually problem-free, but that the 3800s almost NEVER come back for anything. I then went into the showr…

While there is the occasional domestic or foreign model that gets my attention, there has always been at least one GM model available that has suited my needs perfectly. I'll grant that the number of GM models with the power to part me from my money has often been few, it has always been at least one more than the asian manufacturers have ever had to offer. To date, no asian manufacturer has ever built any model that I would actually spend my money on. That's right, nothing past or present from Toyota, Honda or their ilk has ever appealed to me in a meaningful fashion. This is not a case of loyalty, just plain fact. The future looks to remain exactly the same in this reg…

I just looked up currency rates. Our dollar buys $ 1.10 worth of Canadian dollars. That is unbelievably bad, relatively speaking. When you throw on their taxes, you are right about 1:1. That's horrible. There is no reason to go vacation in Canada right now. Obviously, it's a field day for them coming down into the States to vacation. I remember that, living in Seattle from 1997 through 2000, the US:Canada ratio went to 1.00 : 1.52 once. Crossing the border to vacation or buy things was like stealing...or felt like it!

Well, it seems that someone really wants to get into my house. When I got home this afternoon, the other half of the same sliding door that got broken out before (it is still boarded up with half-inch plywood) was broken out. There is a screen there with a slash mark through it, and this time I guess, the screen slowed down the momentum of the blunt object because they were only able to break out the outer pane of a double pane window. I am so pissed. Somebody knew I wasn't home I guess, which makes me think it has to be somebody very local. I always park in the garage, so during the day it is hard to tell if I'm home... unless the person watched me leave this mornin…

Reading some of the stories about "missed connections" and driving around town lately, watching all of the "non descript" daily drivers carry people to and from places ... and trying to decide on a newer car (be it a newer one for winter and road trips or an older one for winter only), I've been wondering how many people I see in the "daily driver" type cars are actually car enthusiasts, with a "sunny day" only car (or cars) at home, etc. In other words, if you have "toys" (namely, vehicles that are driven only on sunny days, etc.), would people know that you are an enthusiast by what you drive daily/to work? Or, like me, is one of your "toys" your current daily driver?…

...I will not be plowing a snowstorm. The ROPOS made it through the last massive snowfall, and a second day of cleanup plowing, just fine. But yesterday when I went to move it, reverse was gone from the trans. After a mad dash to find the right trans, all efforts have failed - so for the first time ever, I will not be able to meet my obligations as far as plowing goes. I guess 25 years of not missing a single storm is a pretty good record, but it still makes me feel like $h! to have to admit defeat and bring that streak to a close. Up until today, I had been out there pushing snow in every single snowstorm since '85, and driven in every one since '79.…

Lets face it the latest cars out of GM are light years better than what it had been producing for the last twenty years. Look at the new Caddy's and the new Vette not to mention the SSR and the new SUV's and I think the company should be renamed to pay tribute where it is due. On this forum the new name for GM should be... LUTZWAGON!!!!! Can i get an amen brothers and sisters. :metal:

This morning it really hit me like a ton of bricks. This year has been all about panic and overreaction. From the obvious confusion of all of the federal legislators to the G3, there has been a strong tendancy to rush headlong into disaster mode. Yes, things are bad and will get worse, but I can't help thinking that no one is thinking anything through before reacting. Maybe it is just that I have had the experience of living through the late '70's, but I see the degree of panic exhibited across our society as near-hysterical. I don't mean to diminish the severity of things, but I do worry that we are so afraid now that we are flailing about and taking actions we wil…

Well, with all the crappy new lately (and it sucks to know that "other stuff" too), it makes me want to just get away from cars for a while. One simple thing is stopping me- my Cavalier. Yes, a simple Cavvy...... Even though my plans to "speed" her up are done (just a waste of money with a family now), My buddy is working on his beater 03, which has me wanting to do a little "upgrading". Granted, just wheels and tires, and few small goodies....it is amazing what a little work on your car will do. I want my next project to a classic car (GM vintage), and find a car that will be a fun 1st classic car..... I almost feel bad about spendin the money, but....gotta hav…

Germany in call for ban on oil speculation Link: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/main.jhtm...26/cnoil126.xml German leaders are to propose a worldwide ban on oil trading by speculators, blaming the latest spike in crude prices on manipulation by hedge funds. It is the most drastic proposal to date amid escalating calls from Europe, the US and Asia for controls on market forces, underscoring the profound shift in the political climate since the credit crunch began. India has already suspended futures trading of five commodities. Uwe Beckmeyer, transport chief for Germany's Social Democrats, said his party would call for joint measures by the G8 powers to prohibit …

What?! Did you expect a new car or something? Yeah, that's my $20k car. No. Really. It is! Just ask the Cashier at the Kwik-Fill in Clarion! So, the story goes as is. I'm riding around with a few friends and I'm aching for gas. I go to pull into the BP, when my one friend says to go to the Kwik-Fill because they have his favorite gummy fish. So I do. I get out and as soon as I walk inside I hear "Hey, is that a Cutlass or a Grand Prix". I answer. He says "How much? I'll buy it". I let out a little laugh and find the gummy fish my friend wanted. I walk up to pay as he continues to talk about it. He says "That car is worth alot of money, especially sitting on the origina…

A family friend of ours just got an Enclave before Christmas. He wanted to upgrade the speakers so we tore it apart today and put in new speakers all the way around and a new 4 channel amp. Infinity Kappa Perfect Components and an MTX 4-channel for anyone who knows or cares about audio. Let me first say that everything I took apart was put together VERY well. Better than any vehicle I've done stereo work in fact. Kudos GM. As is the trend, the electronics are more complex than anything else I've worked in, but after a couple hours of rewiring, bypassing the factory amp, and some troubleshooting after that with my buddy who works at a local car audio dealer, we got…

I'm a big fan of the 2000 -to- 2005 Impala. Pretty much the only flaw they have is that they have transverse mounted motors and are FWD. As far as sefety, quality & power economy and smoothness of the Impala it is all fantastic. Once they changed the burgundy tail light surround to black in '03 I pretty much thought the car looked almost PERFECT, even looks like it has a RWD stance. Is it just my obsession for RWD, am I just seeing things? THis car has always looked like it has a RWD stance to me. Am I crazy? Look at that healthy rear overhang...
