GM continues to upgrade Solstice, Sky Link to Original Article @ LeftLaneNews The Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky have been a smash hit for General Motors, and the automaker is looking to keep it that way. Shortly after launching the cars, GM responded to media and consumer feedback by adding a reinforcing brace added between the transmission and differential, implementing a more usable third gear, and improving wind noise. Now, the company is making further changes to ensure continued positive reviews. According to Edmunds, GM is adding power door locks to both roadsters, as well as height-adjustable drivers' seats. General Motors wants out of Opel, and according to new reports, it is willing to let the German automaker go without receiving any money for it. The only requirement is that the buyer must inject €500 million (around $652M USD) into Opel for operations. While GM CEO Fritz Henderson has said there are six serious investors in discussions for Opel, and that a deal should be done by early May, the fact that GM has said "if you pay the bills you can have it" indicates that GM is ready to work with anyone who's willing to sign. Making a deal would not only free GM of Opel's current burdens, but the obligations it would have if Opel shuts down under its watch. Another outlet …

Sources within General Motors have signaled that the GM Board of Directors today, met in an emergency meeting after the additional $2 Billion loss announced yesterday is in addition to the $8.6 Billion loss previously announced. We've also received word that the Board of Directors will hold another emergency meeting early next week. The Board is clearly not happy with the latest turn of events and this latest news of an additional $2 Billion loss. Most of the costs are seen coming from a Delphi bail-out which is expected to be announced early next week as well. As always, we'll have more details as we get them.

  7. A GMI original story, apparently: Initially Alpha was going to be a four-cylinder only chassis for small premium cars, so naturally development focused on optimizing the Alpha platform for four-cylinder mills in a very light package. Well, Cadillac’s first condition was that Alpha be re-engineered to package a naturally aspirated V-6 engine – and that was non-negotiable. This about-face on engine selection would become the first of at least two engine requests that led to a re-engineering of the Alpha chassis to accommodate the new requirements. More changes (read: more mass and cost) were required for the addition of all-wheel drive. What started out as a great handl…

Sell the higher-priced luxury car with the advanced technology, not the lower-priced one. Don't be worried about costing more. Glory in it. Our Cadillac forgot this lesson long ago, went for volume, lost the high ground to Mercedes and Lexus and BMW, and really is no longer a luxury nameplate. It's what Buick used to be. 62. General Motors CEO Mary Barra spoke yesterday at the Barclays Global Automotive Conference in New York. During her talk, Barra said the company expects to make a profit off electric vehicles once they launch their next-generation EV platform. “We are working to provide desirable, obtainable and profitable vehicles that deliver a range of over 300 miles. There’s a lot of really creative things we’re doing to achieve that profitability point for that new platform,” Barra said to investors. The next-generation modular platform, due in 2021 will play a pivotal role in GM's plan to launch 20 all-new electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles by 2023. The platform will …

  63. General Motors has been seeing sales of their passenger cars take a sharp drop as buyers latch on to crossovers, SUVs, and trucks. The first half of 2017 has seen GM's passenger car sales drop 19 percent. In June, passenger cars went into freefall with a 36 percent drop. This has General Motors making some drastic decisions in terms of products and production sites. "We are talking to (GM) right now about the products that they currently have" at underused car plants such as Hamtramck in Michigan and Lordstown in Ohio, and whether they might be replaced with newer, more popular vehicles such as crossovers, said Dennis Williams, president of the UAW. According to…

  65. WARREN, Mich. - Even now, as General Motors fights for survival, there is something ambivalent about its prescription for saving itself, a conflict implicit in a bit of symbolism that recently greeted arrivals to the Detroit Metropolitan Airport even before they reached baggage claim. One of GM's touted new automobiles sat on display in the center of the automaker's airport gift shop. It was not the coming electric car, the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, championed by Bob Lutz, the GM executive most identified with the Hail Mary that the vehicle represents for the bankrupt company, which faces the immediate future as a ward of the federal government. It was not one of the relati…

  66. GM and Honda presented before the United States Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. Honda's presentation had some interesting items (http://energy.senate.gov/public/_files/germantestimony.doc), but buried deep inside are some stats from The American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE) on plug-in hybrids. According to a report from Sept 2006, a plug-in hybrid with a 40 mile range would require a $17,500 battery. As the Volt can go 64 miles, that would equate to roughly a $28,000 battery (a hybrid, by comparison, currently has a $2,000 battery) Currently, according to the ACEEE and Honda, the payback for the hybrid portion of a hybrid is 7.…

I work as a stock broker and this just came through as 'relevant' GM financial news on the wires. GM is not perfect. Bush is not perfect. They both have many faults. I personally like them both. The REASONS that Moore gives for not liking either just makes me laugh for hours. In my opinion he does not have a logical bone in his body. Rarely do any of his arguments point to solid fact, but rather appeal only to flawed emotional misconceptions. Here's the article: Filmm…

I just noticed something strange yesterday. My local GMC-Pontiac-Buick store and the Cadillac-Hummer (no Saab) store are owned by the same dealer but in different locations about a mile apart. They have just combined all 5 franchises into the older GMC-Pontiac-Buick lot (which sits right next to a successful Lexus dealer). A Volkswagen dealer will move into the former Cadillac-Hummer property next to the Infiniti store (which is also owned by the GM dealer). The pylon sign hasn't been changed yet, but the dealer has put up crummy "Cadillac" and "Hummer" block letter signs. "Oldsmobile" can still be read on the window as you walk into the showroom. Now, I live in an…

  73. General Motors may be lacking the cash to develop any new rear-drive platforms, but reports out of Australia suggest that the existing Zeta platform that underpins such models as the Holden Commodore and new Chevrolet Camaro will carry on for at least another decade. GM's Australian subsidiary only finished development of the current Zeta platform a few years ago, and it's not about to flush that down the toilet. However the next Commodore, currently sold in the North American market as the Pontiac G8, is likely to downsize for the next generation, anticipated to debut in 2013 and carry on through 2020. Along with the reduced size and heft, the General could use smaller…

On one side of the cavernous white room, designers huddle over a silver retro remake of the Chevy Camaro. A few steps away, stylists scurry around a future Chevy family car that ripples with sinewy muscles from a bygone era. Papering the walls of the studio are photos of classic iron from Detroit's halcyon postwar years—the chiseled '65 Chevy Impala, the jet-age '65 Ford Galaxie, the long-nosed '65 Plymouth Fury. Simple question, simple answer. I'm sorry I had to put the Corvette as an aside, but since it's, imo, there only class-leading product, I had to list the caveat. And, it is after all, the flagship, GM has to get it right. So share some opinions, give me your best, we're all fans, and we're all interested in the best for this company. EDIT: Sorry I wasn't more specific. This question should be, "In general do you think GM makes class-leading or competitive products." This should not include just a few entrants, consider the number of segments GM competes in, and consider how many are actually class-leading or very near the top of that seg…

Just how much do the tarriffs increase the average price of a Cavalier or Corvette, since I know those are about the only American cars that sell in Japan. This is probably the most backhanded thing any company can do, not because Japan Inc are selling so extraordinarily well, but because of all the other pressures in addition to this ridiculous form of trade GM must follow in Japan. Linkity What's difficult to understand is why Detroit's automakers lose billions of dollars making cars and trucks here, while competitors like Toyota, Honda, BMW and Mercedes, who build them here too, make a fortune at it. They're all building new plants or expanding production at the old ones while Detroit is shutting factories. General Motors, for example, reported a loss of $39 billion for last year, and my guess is that Toyota will have an operating profit approaching $20 billion for its March 31 fiscal year, with the North American operations the greatest contributor to that. Here's my explanation: Rebates. Detroit has to pay buyers t…

  96. This might not be the most important news of the day, but it is very nice to hear. Since this will most likely be a pure digital connection (like the VW and BMW), the sound will be MUCH better than the current AUX jack on SOME GM models. Add the intergrated controls on the radio (again, like the BMW and VW), and I think this will be another one of those "on the fence" options. Given the staggering number of people who own these things, I think this will be a bargaining tool much like XM radio and OnStar. I think this is a good move for GM.
