Buick
Founded in 1903 by David Dunbar Buick, Buick is one of America’s oldest automobile brands and the oldest active division of General Motors (GM). Known for pioneering innovations like the overhead valve engine, Buick became a symbol of affordable luxury throughout the 20th century. It played a key role in GM’s growth and today positions itself between Chevrolet and Cadillac, offering premium vehicles in both the U.S. and China—its largest market.

One of the big surprises at the Detroit Auto Show was the Buick Avista concept. The vehicle drew a lot of praise from not only the press but also from the public. “The energy around that car and the interest in it at the shows was amazing,” said Buick's chief marketer Tony DiSalle to Wards Auto. With all of this interest, you think Buick would be making plans to get the Avista into production. Unfortunately, that isn't going to happen. DiSalle explained that wasn't enough enthusiasm for the concept to give Buick officials a prompt to approve it. “It was purely a concept and meant to generate some buzz. No other plans for now.” That includes none of the des…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com February 25, 2013 Remember when Buick and GMC announced they would introducing nine new models over the next twelve months. Two of those have been caught by a spy photographer. First up is the 2014 Buick LaCrosse. The mule caught in the shots has a larger front grille and a set of LED accents around the headlights. Not so obvious in the shots is the amount of camo in the interior of the mule, meaning extensive changes are coming. Then there is the 2014 Buick Regal. Much like the shots of the Opel and Vauxhall Insignia we reported on earlier this year, the Regal will get a revised front end. More extensive changes wil…

http://www.autoblog.com/2007/07/30/buick-l...inese-infusion/ Buick lineup to get Chinese-infusion Posted Jul 30th 2007 9:57AM by Damon Lavrinc Filed under: Sedans/Saloons, China, Buick Judging by the positive reception the Chinese-marketed Buicks have been receiving here in the States, GM would be ill-advised to continue offering the same warmed-over products that it's been selling over the past decade. According to Automotive News, the General sees the writing on the wall and intends to go global with the new look of Buick, originally shown at the Shanghai Motor Show in the shape of the Riviera concept. The idea is to make Buick an affordable luxury brand here in th…

http://www.arifleet.com/Production2007/production1109.pdf So is this dropped in lieu for the new Super? They should've dumped the bottom-feeder, Chevy-like CX and CXL trim levels, and renamed the CXS Reserve as so long-rumored. Give it velour or leather, bench or bucket seats and a much-higher power (the CTS' 258hp version) of the 3.6-liter DOHC High Feature V-6 engine.

Buick's compact car, the Verano may not see an encore after the model run is up at the end of the 2017 model year according to a report on AutoNews.com. With the addition of the Buick Envision going on sale in a few weeks, Buick see crossovers making up 70% of its sales going forward. It's not hard to see why Buick would come to that conclusion. GM sales figures for December 2015 show the Verano moving 31,886 copies for the year while the similarly priced Buick Encore sold 67,549 units. Buick's strategy lately has been to fill "white space" in the market. Offer models that don't quite have an exact match to offerings from any other brand. When the Verano debuted …

Almost a year after Buick introduced their Avenir subbrand, it has proven to be a big success for the brand's big crossover. According to Automotive News, one out of every four Enclaves sold is the top-line Avenir. That's pretty impressive when you consider that the base price for the Avenir is $54,495. GM says demand from dealers is outstripping their supplies, despite a new investment earlier this year. Sales of the new Enclave have risen 15 percent in the first half of this year, and the average transaction price has risen $5,000 - putting it in line with the likes of the Acura MDX and Infiniti QX60. "We saw the need to provide even more for Enclave, and…

Buick is hoping to become the American Lexus - and the '06 Lucerne is the model Buick hopes will change buyer's hearts and minds. Or at the very least, get them to give Buick a shot at their business before they buy their next Lexus. Based on the car itself, they should. The Lucerne, which replaces the Park Avenue as Buick's top model, stands a good chance of changing their image dynamic and of doing so without completely alienating the current buyer pool. This is a handsome ride, for starters, smooth and purposeful. The Lucerne has a steeply sloped windshield, a crisp beltline and minimalist ornamentation save for a nicely done reinterpretation of the classic Bu…

2010 Buick LaCrosse CXS is an American Lexus GM's first new car since it emerged from bankruptcy is as good as or better than the ES350 in every way, and is actually desirable. Dan Neil August 7, 2009 Fighter pilots call it "target fixation" when you become so focused on a single adversary that you lose situational awareness and fly into something large and obvious, like the ground. Buick's 2010 LaCrosse -- a near-luxury, mid-size-to-large sedan -- was built to put the cross-hairs on a single bogie, the Lexus ES350, and I'll tell you right now, it blows the Lexus out of the sky. It was nearly two years ago that we learned that General Motors trademarked 'Regal Tourx'. At the time, we speculated this could mean the next-generation Regal would have a wagon variant - possibly something along the lines of the Audi A4 Allroad and Subaru Outback. Since then, we have been hearing rumors and various reports saying that the Regal wagon is coming - the most recent one coming this week. Now we have more evidence thanks to the California Air Resources Board (CARB). Motor1 got their hands on an emission certificate listing a number of General Motors vehicles equipped with the 2.0L turbo-four. In this list, we see the Regal, Regal AWD, and Regal Tour X AW…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 29, 2013 One of the big things that we have been wondering since the introduction of the Buick Regal GS is if the Regal would be the only model in Buick's lineup to have a GS model or could there be more. According to Car and Driver, there might be more GS models. Ed Welburn, General Motors’ vice president of global design tells Car and Driver that more GS models could be on the way to help bolster Buick's performance cred. The most likely candidates for this would be the Verano and LaCrosse. Source: Car and Driver William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears. He can be reached at william.maley@chee…

I've said it here a good dozen times; I think this is a terrible mis-appropriation of the storied nameplate. Sure, the crowd that has come to lean on the overly-simplistic 'A-B-C, 1-2-3' naming mindset will applaud, but it's still a travesty. None-the-less, here it is, threatening to return. Hopefully, it'll be another scenario like the '08 Invicta concept, and it'll remain peacefully dormant.

I went to the dealership last week to have the left front door check replaced on my 2006 Buick Lucerne which came cracked. While there I mentioned a problem I noticed especially prominent in city driving. When turning (especially to the left) I could feel something like a gear slipping. This was very hard to describe but felt pronounced in the steering wheel but no sound involved. When I left they told me there would probably be a recall on this when the problem was corrected. The service sheet said: BULLETIN #06-02-35-009 STATES NOT TO REPLACE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT OR STEERING GEAR. PERFORMED STEPS 1 - 5 AS PER BULLETIN. UNABLE TO REACH ENGINEERING AS IN STEP 6.…

I like the Regal, and I would even add the Wagon to Buick. But to me it doesn't have the Fine details Lacrosse and Enclave have. The Regal design has much more in common with Saturns. I also think GME has there own thing going on. While Buick is central to GMAP. I am a huge fan of The Lacrosse design. And the 2 main designers Justin Thompson, and Richard Duff are with GMAP now. Duff With Patac, and Thompson back at Holden. And Gmap has done some really nice Buick concepts. The IMO Gorgeous Riv concept GMAP also has Both RWD/AWD and FWD/AWD platforms to build on. A sales consultant at a GM dealer in Canada has posted to another website that Bob Lutz appeared at Canada's annual dealer conference today and brought along some future Buicks ( ! ). One was the LaCrosse/Allure. The second was a Buick Regal, based off, as you may have read reports, the Opel Insignia. (There were some spy shots taken in China and shown elsewhere on that website.) The third was the Riviera Concept and, according to this sales consultant, the Riviera is "a go!" He suspects that it will be built in Oshawa. If this information is accurate, it's wonderful news for present and future Buick owners!

Buick is expanding their electrified options in China with the introduction of the Velite 6 plug-in hybrid and electric. They'll join the the Buick Velite 5 - a rebadged Chevrolet Volt. The design is interesting to say in the least with a fair number of creases and a blacked-out rear pillar on this hatchback body. Arriving first is the plug-in hybrid which is comprised of a 1.5L four-cylinder, two AC permanent-magnet synchronous motors, and lithium-ion battery pack. With a full tank of gas and fully charged battery, Buick estimates a range of 700 kilometers (about 435 miles). Not much is known about the electric variant, aside from Buick saying the model "will …

I know there are people who bash GM for selling any of it's vehicles to rental car companies, as if that is the only way they could sell their vehicles, but I think it's a good marketing tool in the sense that you can really find out about a car when you take it on a 5 day test drive. My wife and I rented a V8 Lucerne a couple of weeks ago and we both fell in love with it. Even my wife had sort of bought into the perception gap thing that Buicks were for "old people". But after spending quite a bit of time in it, she began to realize how great the car really is. Not only is it really gorgeous on the exterior, but it's like a vault when you're cruising at 85 down th…

Dorschel Buick (Rochester, NY) had a production version of a new Lucerne CXS on display last week. I'm not sure it if is still there or not. It wasn't for sale, they were using it to generate interest I guess. It was open and fully accessable. I was all over it. Very nice for a big ol' 4 door sedan. Much better looking in person than in pictures. They also had it sitting right next to a LeSabre, which just made the LeSabre look all the more crappy.

Buick is rolling out some big changes for the 2018 LaCrosse, including a new eAssist mild hybrid system. The eAssist system is said to be smaller and powerful than the previous system used in the last-generation LaCrosse and Regal eAssist models. A 2.5L four-cylinder is paired with a small electric motor and a 0.45-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack that work together to improve acceleration and bump fuel economy - Buick says the system improves city fuel economy by 19 percent when compared to the 3.6L V6. The eAssist powertrain will become the LaCrosse's base powertrain and will lower the price to $30,490 (no mention if this includes destination or not). …

Today, Buick released details and images of their sleek new Envista crossover finally bound for the US and slotting just below the new Buick Encore GX in the lineup. We saw an earlier version of this car last September when the Buick Envista was released in China. While Buick is not labeling the Envista a crossover coupe, with a fastback profile, that is the segment the Envista largely falls into. However, with a base price starting at $23,495, it could be considered the only entry in the crossover coupe segment. Envista will be available in three trims, Preferred, Sport Touring (ST), and Avenir, with base prices of $23,495, $25,195, and $29,195, respectively. Stylin…

I got the chance to compare LaCrosses at the ASIM in Pomona on Sunday and came away pleasantly surprised with the car. First, I drove the CXL (3800, base suspension) and while it was a bit floaty, it was not NEAR as bad as I thought it would be. I'd compare it to a base Camry or Avalon. The engine, however, was pretty bad. I'm no pushrod fan, but I don't ever remember the 3800 being this sluggish and unresponsive. I had to floor the gas throughout the course to get any response from the engine or tranny. Overall, however, not bad for a base car. Next was the CXS and while it didn't feel that much firmer than the base car, it lacked the float and rol…

I'm so damn fickle. GTOs, Auroras, and now Park Avenues (among other cars...). I'm not even entirely sure how I got interested in these but here I am. Anyway, these appear to have not too great depreication (aka great prices w/relatively low miles) but they don't look half-bad. Nice, classy exterior; comfortable-looking interior and the supercharged Ultra = sleeper possibilities. No one ever suspects the Park Avenue...

Buick's brand manager Duncan Aldred is 'thrilled' with how the brand is doing. "It's a wonderful portfolio. We'll have three sedans, three crossovers and a halo. I think most brands would say, "Yeah, that's a great portfolio.' I'm thrilled with it," Aldred told Automotive News. That doesn't mean Aldred isn't open to possibly a new product, such as a flagship. But one model that has been taken off the table is the Opel Adam. Previously, Aldred has said he would like to bring the Adam over to compete against the Fiat 500 and MINI Cooper. But with the rise of crossovers - like the Buick Encore, has given Aldred second thoughts. "I very much did feel when I came o…

Custom Skylark Found in Sarasota It's 1953 Again as One-Off Buick Skylark Convertible Surfaces Link to Original Article @ Edmunds SARASOTA, Fla. — It dawned slowly on collector and restorer Eugene Cohen: The 1953 Buick Skylark convertible he was working on was a one-of-a-kind. He already knew the car was one of only 1,690 built by GM, but details found on none of those other Skylarks made him realize this one was built as a showcar — or as a special treat for some VIP or employee of Buick. Cohen said the "general consensus among retired GM executives...at vintage-car meets" is that it was probably an auto show display model. The big tipoff was the blank trim and paint…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com June 19, 2012 General Motors has trademarked another old nameplate, this time from Buick. Left Lane News reports that General Motors filled a trademark application on June 5th for Electra. No other details were revealed in the filling. Electra was a Buick nameplate introduced back in 1959 to replace the Roadmaster and Limited models. The nameplate would last till 1990. So why is General Motors trademarking Electra? Left Lane has two theories. Theory one is a flagship sedan that will use the LWB Epsilon II platform as a base. Using the Electra nameplate makes sense because the name was used for Buick flagships. Theory …

It would seem that GM is hellbent on doing something with Buick in NA, so the question becomes what, exactly, should Buick be? To my mind, Buick should be elegant, high style, high comfort, high quality luxury without the burden of a performance orientation that Cadillac has to maintain. Im other words, Buick should be luxury and style without compromise. That's not to say that Buicks should not perform at a high level, just that no compromises of luxury or style be made on behalf of that performance. Cadillac has to toe that line, Buick should be free not to. Discuss.

I personally think the Buick is best suited taking on Toyota, Nissan & Honda. Buick would be wise to compete directly against these big brands. Today, Buick is ripe to take a big chunk out of a market the grosses at least 4 million in sales every year. So, Buick could make a killing. Buick's Advantages Are: 1)Award Winning Quality 2)Established Premium Creditials. 3)A Large Dealer Network 4)Plenty of Oppurtunity to expand into new segments. 5)Is Cross-shopped largely by Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Mercury, Chrysler, & other premium brand buyers. 6)A rapidly decling median buyer age. It declined from 74 to 69 from the late '90s to the early '00s. It is likely e…

Just saw a commercial for the Lucerne CXL on tv, in which it said the car was quieter than some Lexus model, Acura model, and Infiniti model (it named the specific models, I just didn't catch them all) and started at $25,990, I think it was. But what really perked my ears up was the very last statement: "Buick... beyond precision, not beyond your reach." How do you like that line?

Buicks biggest market is China and yet GM has clearly stated that starting in 2024, Buick will start the transition to all EV here in the U.S. as Buicks second biggest market. GM has been busy filling with the U.S. patent and trademark office as well as in Canada, China and across Europe to ensure no one else uses or has access to the Electra name. Here at the start of November, uncovered by GM Authority web site, nine new trademarks alone were filed on top of the traditional Electra, Electra GS we also see that Buick will have the Electra E1 to E9 for a full family of all sized EVs. Back in June 2022, Buick revealed their latest concept, the Wildcat LV Co…

How is everyone feeling about their local BPG dealership? Mine is in Hickory, North Carolina. The old stand-alone BPG was sold to the local Chevrolet dealership and man, has it gone down hill, especially on customer service. I've been working with one of their sales reps, the "Corvette Specialist," and he runs hot and cold. No real personal attention, no feeling of being somewhere special like the old Buick dealerships. I sent him my desired Enclave almost a month ago, "so that I can get it in the pipeline and get it for you early," and I haven't heard a word from him since. Earlier, I made an appointment with him to test drive an Acadia, and when I showed up, he was gone…

An article by Rick Popely and Jim Mateja in today's Chicago Tribune, "Age-old battle for Buick: Models aimed at younger buyers haven't helped the venerable GM brand reverse a long trend of its buyers being among the oldest in the auto industry -- at 65, nearly 20 years above the average," has some interesting facts. And it also claims that "Global Insight forecasts that a smaller crossover, a version of the Saturn Vue, will arrive in 2008. In 2009, the LaCrosse is expected to be redesigned and renamed Regal, bringing back a popular nameplate. The front-wheel-drive Lucerne could be replaced by a larger rear-drive sedan in 2010, perhaps as the Riviera." Click here for the…

Buick's large crossover will get the sleek Buick Wildcat concept styling from the show car. The Enclave will sport the same slim "eyes" and large lower grille as seen on the Buick Envista, but scaled up for the Enclave's size. We expect the Enclave to receive the same 328 horsepower / 326 lb-ft of torque 2.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder found in the recently refreshed Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia. While the Enclave has been fully redesigned, it will continue to use an updated version of the existing C1 platform and be roughly the same size as the outgoing model. While the teaser sketches show a more rakish rear glass, the mules that have been spotted retain th…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 19, 2013 A new report from Edmunds shines some light on what Buick possibly has in store powertrain-wise for some of their vehicles. A sources says that Buick is planning on offering a diesel engine in their lineup. This is due to Buick and Opel becoming more aligned. Also, diesels have gained more ground in the U.S. thanks to their ability to provide large fuel economy numbers without a massive hit on performance. The source doesn't say which vehicle will get the diesel engine, but Edmunds speculates it will be the Verano since it's closely related to the Chevrolet Cruze which offers a diesel engine. Another s…

Alright I know I am going to hear the internal competition argument here. But really why not make a Buick kappa with a 3.9 HV V6, we know it will fit or a supercharged 3.9 and a hard top? You could charge about $28,000 for a base model with it coming pretty loaded and sell an Ultra with the 3.9 supercharged v6 or the 3.6 HF V6 and charge $32,000. Seriously it would help fill capacity at Willmington AND it would lower peice cost due to increased volume. Key competitors would be the Chrysler Crossfire and Audi TT. Heck this idea just came to me style it after the Velite OR make it retro styled after late 40s Buicks. Any comments or suggestions guys? Possibly a p…

So, I'm far away, in the land of fall colors, driving along in the U.P. of Michigan, and I see this old but familiar Buick in a driveway. No, it can't be. I pull off and find a spot where there is room to park. I take out my phone and set it to camera mode. It was a '76 or '77 Regal colonnade coupe. It had the V6 badge. The lady of the house comes out the door and I explain to her that my dad used to have one of these as a second car. I asked if it was for sale. She said that her husband would know the details, that he wanted to rescue this piece of history from going into oblivion, and she gave me their number after we talked a bit. She didn't know much a…

According to Vince Burlapp's Car Page, the new Chinese Buick LaCrosse will basically be a rebadged Opel Insignia. (I tried to post a link but it wouldn't accept it, and tried to link to the photo but it didn't work.) So to read his information and see his picture, please go to burlappcars.com and look for the Wed., 6/25/08 story titled "Chinese Buick La Crosse." Burlapp states that the photo is what China gets but not what the U.S. will get. I thought with globalization that the Chinese and NA Buick product would be exactly the same. Is it possible that Burlapp is wrong, that the camouflaged picture hides the sweepspear line and other niceities of the Invicta Concep…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com May 6, 2013 Buick has been one of the success stories since General Motors came out of bankruptcy a few years ago. The tri-shield brand has seen its sales on the up and up for the past few years thanks to vehicles such as the Enclave, LaCrosse, and Verano. Now GM's North American President, Mark Reuss tells Automotive News that Buick deserves something special. "We've very carefully built Buick back to a brand that has respect. Something special for Buick, I think, is really needed for the next phase of where that brand is going," Reuss said. Reuss went onto say that Buick is ready for an entry "that's very special, …

As some of you may know, the LA Times recently published a piece about Buick and its future. The author made several mistakes, including that Buick was founded by William Durant. The Times ran a correction yesterday. The article was a slam to the future of Buick, and the author did not use a SINGLE Buick owner. He did not write about how Buick outsells Acura, Infiniti, Jaguar, Cadillac, Saturn, Saab, Mercury, etc and beats them in quality surveys. If you are a Buick owner or a fan, and are upset about this article, please write to the LA Times auto editor Barry Stavro: barry.stavrolatimes.com You can also contact the Buick spokesman David Darovitz to encourage…
