Buick
Founded in 1903 by David Dunbar Buick, Buick is one of America’s oldest automobile brands and the oldest active division of General Motors (GM). Known for pioneering innovations like the overhead valve engine, Buick became a symbol of affordable luxury throughout the 20th century. It played a key role in GM’s growth and today positions itself between Chevrolet and Cadillac, offering premium vehicles in both the U.S. and China—its largest market.

While getting my 01 Regal LS winterized this morning, the salesman who sold me the Regal offered a one-owner 05 Lacrosse with 10,000 miles for a test drive. It was a silver CXL. I checked to see if it fit the garage (it did) and took it out 10 miles out of town to check highway driving. It was hard to tell if it was quieter than the Regal, as we have a lot of wind in central Kansas right now, but it seemed so while in town. Ride was very tight and controlled and brakes felt confident, and much improved over my Regal. In fact, the ABS brakes on my car have been checked twice because of pulsing, but no problems have ever been found. Seats, while somewhat less conforming an…

Can someone please remind me whether GMX022, a Kappa Buick, is still a potential product? According to Ted's information, GMX020 is the Pontiac Solstice; the Saturn Sky is GMX023, and an Opel GT is GMX024. (Also, I'm curious what GMX021 may have been.) Thank you.

There is a new Buick print ad that just debuted showing a four vehicle lineup: Lacrosse, Lucerne, Enclave and Regal. I'm having trouble posting the picture. Can someone do it? Also Troy Clarke from GM said this today about Buick "The good news for Buick is that it is one of our core brands and so will get a due amount of our attention in terms of entries, cadence of entries, and effective promotion to build the brand. Best to take it step at a time so right now we are focused on the launch of the new Lacrosse. Dynamite product. Continues the renaissance of Buick that began with the Enclave. So I've been thinking...Since the engine between the Buick LaCrosse V6 and the Camaro V6 are the same (LLT I believe), then wouldn't it be sweet to incorporate a supercharger into the LaCrosse's performance? Now before you going flaming me, I'm just thinking out loud here...packaging would likely need to change to ensure a fit within the engine bay, and the cost would be nothing to laugh at. But just think about it for a second... A supercharged 2012 Buick LaCrosse Currently 303 HP, could get well over 400 from a S/C application 4 doors for all your friends and a roomy trunk for the gear. AWD to keep you stable and give one hell of a launch control. A total sleep…

Forgot to mention, the Buick guy with the Lucerne (see Connecticut post) said the average age of Buick buyers has dropped in 2005. He thought is was under 60. The Rainier, Rendezvous, and Terrazza are being credited for that.

Saw my first 2007 LaX on the road this morning, a CXL with the new 17" 10 spoke wheel. What a difference nice wheels make!! BIG improvement. The car was silver so it wasn't one of the new colors Also, CARS.com has been updated for 2007 if you want to build your own. Just select any BUICK model on the main page and click build your new car button. When the page comes up it will be for 2006, so select the "Model" link where it says Change Vehicle . . . it will then prompt you to choose either 2006 or 2007 and go from there. One thing I noticed is that the Lucerne option packages have been revised. The heated washer fluid is now a part of the Driver Confidence pa…

This news is about a week old but I have not seen it around here, there are two short articles I found on it here http://www.indiantelevision.com/mam/headli.../julymam118.htm and here http://www.tvweek.com/news.cms?newsId=10443 Buick's marketing campaign has been aggressive using product placements in shows like Monk and The Apprentice as well as advertising on hundreds of major websites on the internet. My question to you is do you think this is effective? I question the effectiveness of placing the Lucerne in shows like Monk and The Apprentice (second season) when their popularity isn't at an all-time high and forgoing truly large events that Chevy and Cadillac o…

Okay, so I know you have to deal with dealers to cut down pricing, but as I was looking at the Lucernce CXL V6, I begin to wonder how they think they would get away with it. Let me explain, First off, isn't the heated and cooled drivers seat including in the CXL V6 Packages? (at least the site of gmbuypower nor Buick.com tries to price you on, but the brochures and comparison charts say they have them). Needless to say the dealers are adding $1,075.00 for this. (if this isn't the case how come you can't build this on Buick.com or GmBuypower.com but get a shock with an extra $1,000 when you search dealer inventory?) Premium Paint, GMbuypower and Buick.com says this i…

I keep looking at the relentless decline in Buick's sales numbers and wonder how much time the name has left. I was pretty excited about the LaCrosse when it first arrived (maybe because it looked so much better than the cars it replaced), but now it's starting to look fairly dated already. The same with the Lucerne (though to be fair I've not seen one in person here in LA). What will the sales numbers look like a year or two from now when the Enclave is introduced? And then another few years after that when the Epsilon II replacement arrives and later (maybe) Zeta? I wonder, too, how well Enclave will do compared to Arcadia both being sold at the same dealers? We m…

Will the better Buick please stand up? "Since 1989, Toyota's Lexus ES sedans have been raking in gigantic piles of crispy green cashola by employing an absurdly elementary tactic: simply becoming Japan's Buick. You see, Buick's once colossal sales volume hasn't so much evaporated since its halcyon days as it's been incrementally hijacked by a Lexus that's consistently been offering Buick-to-the-bone qualities -- most notably relaxed quietness -- conjoined with Japanese quality." In the end, Buick wins... by a nose. To read the entire article, click here

We have been wondering what the next-generation Buick Enclave would look like and now we have a general idea. Automotive News got their hands on some new spy shots showing an Enclave test mule sitting at a gas station. It appears Buick has made the Enclave less bulbous than the current model. The front end features Buick's new waterfall grille that debuted on the LaCrosse and a set of slim headlights. For the back, there's a new set of taillights and dual-exhaust system. If the Chevrolet Traverse is anything to go by, the Enclave will get the current 3.6L V6 producing 305 horsepower hooked up to a nine-speed automatic. There is the possibility of a 2.0L turbo-four wi…

We know a fair amount about the upcoming Buick Regal GS such as what it might look like and a possible powertrain. Thanks a spy photographer, we have got our first look at what is in store for the U.S. The most apparent item that the photos reveal is that the U.S. version of the Regal GS will mostly mimic the one China. Both models feature the aggressive front end with narrow headlights, revised waterfall grille, and large vents in the bumper. The U.S.-spec GS differs from the Chinese one as it will only come in the sportback variant - China gets the sedan. Another key difference is the wheels. Whereas the Chinese-market looks to be sporting some five-spoke wheels wi…

It looks a refresh is coming soon to the Buick Verano. A fresh set of spy shots were released this week showing a camoflaged mule undergoing some testing in Germany. Much like the Regal, the Verano is a Opel/Vauxhall vehicle (the Astra sedan in this case) with some Buick clothing. Judging from the photos, it looks like Verano will get some more Astra design cues, most notable in the headlights and taillights. But there will still be a number of Buick design cues like the waterfall grille. The refreshed Verano is expected to arrive next year. It talks about its awakening in 1975 (M.Y., anyway) from its slumber (temporary departure) back in 1962. It's a good read and talks about key milestones, including the 1995 intake manifold which usually lasted about 60,000 miles (according to the article) and how the engine could go the long haul if the intake manifold was changed to the after-market reconfigured one to eliminate coolant seepage into places it shouldn't have been going. (Lots of Series II 3800s around and lots of ~'98 Intrigues/Regals/Grand Prixs cruising effortlessly on the freeway, which tells me they probably have the newer manifolds.) (1) Electrochromic Windows This is nothing new. The technology has been around for decades. The window glass has an electrochromic film applied onto it or sandwiched between two panes of glass. The film is almost clear until voltage is applied on it when it turns dark. The level of darkness can be controlled at the touch of a button or turn of a dial. Each passenger can control the darkness of his window. The driver can have a master override to darken or lighten all windows if needed. In addition, the car can be engineered to for example automatically lighten glass when reverse is engaged or have different default darkness settings in the day and at night. This basical…

Buick here in America is a brand of declining sales, lackluster product (excluding Enclave) and an aging customer base. Buick China: A thriving, growing brand with a wide audience and successful, competent product. Many have legitimately complained about the lack of such support and backing in the form excellent product being offered here in the USA. This is all about to change. Enclave is the start of great things for the Buick brand. GM hasn’t given up; Buick is a very important part of the new GM going forward. I test drove a 2010 Buick Allure CXL on July 11, 2009 at the GM Canada test drive program at the Bramalea City Centre Mall. My reactions are as follows: The exterior fit and finish was excellent. The only glitch I noticed with the interior fit and finish was the intrument panel was installed about 1/8 inch too high on the left side so it does not line up with the door trim. Oddly, my 2008 Allure has the same problem. The body structure appears to be very ridgid with good ride and handling characteristics. Steering is good. The powertrain is very smooth. In my opinion this car looks much better in a dark colour rather than light. It was midnight blue. The one I s…

From Detroit Free Press interview with Bob Lutz. Not sure what it means for Velite. Any interpretations? Q: Does each of GM's brands need a flag-in-the-ground car to define it like the Solstice does Pontiac? A: Arguably yes. We've got all kinds of great ideas for things we can do with iconic Hummers without getting bigger and bigger. Cadillac is a no-brainer. Someday we're going to do -- it's definitely in the product plan, but not kicked off yet -- we will do an ultra-luxury sedan involving an engine of more than eight cylinders and costing far more than any Cadillac has ever cost before, but not going into the $300,000 area. As Maybach ha…

Later this month, Buick will be debuting an all-electric concept SUV named the Enspire. The teaser picture released by Buick shows off a rakish back window and a taillight that runs the full length of the rear. "The Enspire leverages GM’s global resources and is an exploration of design and new technologies. It is the brand’s latest example of innovation and application of future electric smart mobility," Buick said in a press release. We're not surprised that Buick is showing off an electric concept in China. Last year, Chinese buyers bought 1.18 million Buick models - compared to the 219,231 sold in the U.S. China is also pushing automakers to build electric veh…

As with the Grand Prix, it appears that production of the W Lacrosse has ended as of December 23rd without fanfare. On cursory glance I don't see any mention of this on the fan sites either. RIP. Looking forward to seeing the much improved/modern EpII version on the road soon... Production of the LaCrosse/Allure is set to end Dec. 23 as the result of the end of the car's production life. This was announced earlier in the year and will mean 400 fewer jobs in the plant. These jobs have already been taken care of through retirement incentives and buyouts, Mr. Lowe said. http://www.newsdurhamregion.com/news/business/article/116043

I just purchased my Buick Lucerne 2006 CXL. It is the last in a long line of Buicks I have owned for the past 25 years. I can truly say it is not a Buick of the past but a Buick of the future. I could not be more pleased. This is truly a great American Automobile and the finest Buick has produced in my opinion. I am sure many older Buick owners like myself will not feel comfortable in this updated Buick image. However, I think it must be the wave of the future if Buick is to survive. This is truly a tremendous automobile. I have never driven a more quiet, comfortable automobile. Buick and Buick fans should be proud that Buick is finally back on the right track!

"“Look how much fun Buick can be!” That’s what we imagine some Buick dealers will think at the sight of the new 2016 Buick Cascada, an attractive soft-top convertible that’s soon to brighten showrooms everywhere, or at least in the five states the automaker says make up half of all convertible sales—and to buyers who aren’t especially brand-loyal. The Cascada will serve Buick as another brand perception-breaker, and you won’t find a convertible at Acura, Cadillac, or Volvo. At a launch event in Florida, we drove the Buick Cascada with the top down, up, and unfolding at speed to determine whether Audi,BMW, or even Ford should be worried. Although the new-to-the-U.S. 20…

Rumors of Buick doing a wagon variant of the Regal have been floating around a for few years and it has either fallen into one of two categories: GM is considering it or they have passed on it. I don't know how knowledgeable this guy is to the future plans of the Lucerne but nobody here has really brought that up as even a potential option for the Lucerne. The article seems to be friendly to GM but it also points of some weaknesses of the Lucerne that are pretty crucial, such as the Avalon getting their V6 to 5 more HP than Lucerne's V8. http://www.mysanantonio.com/business/stori...k.20db0e19.html

GM: Buick ads to downplay Tiger Woods; golfer to tout OnStar Link to Original Article @ The Detroit News Tiger Woods will end his eight-year stint as the main spokesman for General Motors Corp.'s Buick division, the automaker said today. Instead, the golf phenomenon will help tout the OnStar roadside assistance program, which GM has heavily promoted in recent years. The switch was prompted by a desire to refocus Buick marketing on the product, the company said. "We don't want a celebrity at the core of any brand. We want the message on Buick to be about Buick," said Mark LaNeve. But, he said, GM still wants to capitalize on Woods' star appeal. The golfer still will…

Just saw the November issue of Motor Trend at the bookstore, and, in a column of bits and pieces titled "MT Confidential," it was stated (in pretty much these words) that once and for all, according to their spies, the Buick rear-drive program is dead and there is nothing on the horizon. What does this mean for the future of Buick then? Does future product planning hinge on the sales of the Lucerne? Is the Buick Lambda crossover the last to debut so that, given the worst circumstances, it could be canceled?

GM will kill the Lucerne in 2008. What will be the other GM sedan? Buick needs more than just the Lacrosse? How about this Regal sold in CHina?http://allworldcars.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/2010_buick_regal.jpg

I got an email today from Buick about the new Regal and noticed something odd at the very end... Born in Europe. Raised on the Autobahn. The sport-injected 2011 Buick Regal is powered and tuned to deliver the precise, agile handling of a premium sport sedan, coming Spring 2010. Regal comes standard with a 2.4L ECOTEC™ SIDI Variable-valve timing engine that puts out 182 hp. Plus, it's paired with a 6-speed transmission that features Driver Shift Control. And to make your driving experience that much more dynamic, Regal boasts a class-exclusive Interactive Driver Control system that offers three selectable modes to adjust suspension, steering, throttle and transmission s…

I've always thought this was an ugly design, so I can't understand why someone would preserve one from the very beginning. Even so, it's a great deal for a "new" car http://adcache.collectorcartraderonline.co.../7/82935977.htm

With the problems with the Pontiac g-6, and the Saab 9-3 convertible selling so poorly, should GM spread their reach and rebadge one of those as a Buick? Buick is the only GM car line without a convertible, and doesn't GM owe Buick customers and loyalists a convertible after teasing us with the Velite? I mean if they can rebadge the Terrazza and Rainer...

Being the member with the moniker 'regal guy' and being that the Lacrosse was/is its replacement, I thought it only natural that I test the car that dealt the death blow to one of my favorite autos. On Saturday I had the oppurtunity to test drive a Charcoal colored Lacrosse CXL. Let me start by saying that I did not like the look of the lacrosse intially, but the fish-eyed look has softened on me a little since then. This Lacrosse CXL was a program car and it had less than 18,000 miles on it. This car actually looked good from ever angle I stared. It had these very nice chrome buick rims and all the chrome accents offered by GM. After the walkaround the salesman gav…

Buick bills itself as a producer of “Premium American Motorcars,” and its target audience is the somewhat conservative, fairly affluent buyer. But in spite of this rather traditional approach, Buick has occasionally broken out of that mould to market some surprising high performance machines. In 1936, for example, it introduced the Century, named for its 100 mph (161 km/h) capability. It was basically Buick’s light Special model fitted with the Roadmaster’s 5.2-litre (320 cu in.), 120 horsepower overhead valve, straight-eight engine. In the 1960s, the Buick Wildcat wrapped sybaritic luxury in a sparkling performer, and Car Life magazine dubbed it the “Executive Hot-R…

In today's Detroit Free Press, Katie Merx writes some very positive things about the Buick Enclave, and offers a couple of interesting quotes from Bob Lutz. Mr. Lutz states, "The future of Buick does not hinge on the success of the Enclave." Rather, he said, to return Buick to its historic role as GM's "near-luxury brand" in the United States, it must continue to offer vehicles in that same vein. "There will never again be a 'cheap Buick,'" Lutz said. "They will never again be priced down with Chevrolet. But they will offer outstanding value for the price asked." On July 31st my salesman sent me an e-mail and said the car I ordered (LaCrosse Super) was built last week at the #2 Oshawa assembly plant and should arrive any day. Well it still hasn't. He gave me a copy of the build order. I'm wondering if there was any way I could check online to see if the car has left the plant yet and is in transit. I know this sounds ridiculous, but I'm getting a little worried about it. Thanks.

"The Day," a newspaper in New London, CT, has an article summarizing the changes in various makes for 2006, including Buick. What initially burned me is their wording "The revision of Buick's sedans is complete . . . " but, hopefully, they merely mean complete as of '06.

Buick is introducing a Sport Touring package for 2020. The ST is available on the Enclave Essence trim and includes a unique grille with body color surround, 20-inch machined aluminum wheels. The ST remains powered by the same 3.6-liter V6 producing 310 HP and 266 lb-ft of torque, the same unit in all other Enclaves. Other features added to the rest of the Enclave lineup include a new next-generation infotainment system with 8-inch diagonal screen. When equipped, the system supports SiriusXM with 360L which combines satellite and streaming to deliver more content. The setup requires a subscription to both SiriusXM All Access and GM Connected Vehicle services (on-bo…

Okay.....most of you know I'm not a W-body fan.....but I've said repeatedly that I think the styling upgrades on the '08 LaCrosse Super are quite attractive and would most likely make it the GM model I'd buy if locked into one of the three W-bodies.... Have any of you seen the print ad in this month's magazines? It talks all about the new Super....the styling changes.....the chassis improvements.....and even hints that it might be "quicker than a Grand National" (which it's not....Impala SS went 0-60 in 5.7 secs compared to contemporary GN road tests of the times that had the GN just under 5.0sec 0-60.) But NO WHERE in the entire ad does it mention that the Super has a…

So, not many changes are in store for the LaCrosse and Lucerne. Both get tire-pressure monitoring standard. The LaCrosse gets new available wheels on the CXL, and a new standard 12-spoke wheel on the CXS. A few color changes are in store for both--most likely just name changes for the current colors. Touch screen Nav will be available for the Lucerne, as well as a cargo net. Both retain the 3800 as a base.

This is kind of late considering the PA is no more, but I was behind one in traffic last night and observed what a nicely designed rear end they have...(it was a dark blue late model version with 'supercharged' badging). I don't see big Buicks around here very often, and following one in an SUV you get an interesting view down on the rear end...the way the rear fenders curve up and then down and inward..definitely a strong family resembalance to the last Riviera. The last PA was a great looking car, IMHO.

Just checked out the order guide and it looks like the new 3.6L will be rated at 303 hp [226.04 kW] @ 6800 and Torque 264 lb-ft. [356.40 N-m] @ 5300 for the front wheel drive model--a nice bump over its predecessor. The AWD model is still listed as TBD. Might be a fuel economy jump as well. The same engine and transmission setup in the Impala is rated 18/30 city/highway. And I just noticed the 2.4L with eAssist only has a 15.7 gallon tank... was hoping they'd stay with the normal 18 gallon (19 on AWD) tanks and have a long range. EDIT: Link to the Order Guide

The Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse are well past their sell-by-date. GM knows this and will be introducing new versions of both within the next year. We haven't seen any spy shots of either model, til today. Autoblog published some spy shots of the next-generation Buick Enclave undergoing some hot-weather testing in Death Valley. From the shots, it looks like Buick will be retaining the shape of the current model. Although, it looks like the roofline has changed somewhat towards the back. We can pick out the new grille that we first saw on the new LaCrosse along with a set of LED running lights. The Enclave is expected to use a stretched version of the Chi…

Just enjoy the sketches straight outta Shanghai -- it is, after all, what you really came for. Another anonymous "people familiar with the plans said" story. So take it for what it is. If true, GM is pathetically uncured of its own stupidity. They've learned nothing about brand management and don't see that proliferating the same basic vehicle across more than 2 makes hurts all the brands. So now, we'll have a Chevy Equinox, Cadillac SRX, GMC Terrain and now Buick "Vue." Two of these vehicles would be sold at the same dealers! If 4 brands is so great maybe 10 would be better. What's the point? The answer can't be "extra sales" because 2-brand Toyota is kicking 8-brand GM's tail. The Toyota/Honda/Nissan 2-brand brand model has won. Why is GM so obtuse? …
