  3. Leaving work yesterday, the check engine light in my Jeep came on (only the 2nd time in 112k miles). Got home, pulled the code, and it's an OBDII P0306 code, misfire in cylinder 6. Interesting, because I had the plugs replaced last Saturday. Since about Wednesday, I'd noticed a bit of driveline roughness when moving and when sitting at a light in gear. The check engine light stayed on since then. Today after lunch, started and the check engine light didn't come on. Don't seem to notice as much roughness afterwards. Strange. Started and shut down twice since then, light still off. Thinking about taking it back to the shop Monday and explaining what I saw. I ha…

...A VW. It's a 1998 Jetta GT. It has a 2.0l 4cyl, automatic, moonroof, alarm, air conditioning, and only 68k miles. It's not perfect, there are some flaws, but it's mechanically sound. I was cautious about buying a VW, but I didn't buy it blind. I looked into its reliability ratings and common issues, got a carfax report and had it checked out by a mechanic before I bought it. It runs very well and is rather peppy for only having 116 hp. Rides nicely, too. It has alot of quicks I'm not used to, though. The seats recline using a twist knob, the single door lock button is on the center stack, the wiper stalk functions oppositely of how I would expect, the headlight k…

So our 1986 Fleetwood Brougham was sold on Thursday night at 8:00pm. A guy who lives about 1.5 miles away took for a testdrive, gave me a few $100s & $20s and shook my hand as I gave him the keys. Shortly after my wife Julie & myself were in the back of the Banana Boat (the famous Tight Whips yellow '77 Coupe deVille) on our way to South Boston. XP and his g/f gave us a ride down so we could pick up Julie's new hoopty. The car in question was on craigslist for several weeks, no photos in typical fashion. It was located close to University of Massachusetts, right by the famous JFK Library, in So. Boston off Rt. 93. 1982 Mercedes Benz 240 D, four door s…

The rear's not as low as I had hoped it would be but it doesn't look as 4x4 as it did before. The ride is certainly better, smoother, tighter I couldn't ask for more. And as promised here's a bonus that just happened today This happened right out in front of my house. I'm at my computer and I hear my alarm going off.. I look outside to see some guy looking at my bumper with his Dodge Ram pulled out a bit. I get outside, tell him that it's my car. He said it was his fault (no $h!), and he had "slipped" on t…

Also included are aluminum rims, leather/suede upholstery, dual heated seats, AM/ FM/ XM/ CD, a bunch of electronic doo-dads and the usual lazy-man's answered prayers. For those impaired folk who judge a car's 'nationality' based on where it was assembled- it was assembled in Kansas City KS. So far, it drives, rides & handles very smoothly & competantly... and impressively. I need to get a few more pics (ran out of time), esp the interior. VERY nice car, I must say. Also …

Like the title? As disturbing as it may be to me, after momzie dearest called herself the "hottest mom in town" the night we were picking up her new Camaro, yeah, it kind of stuck. And it's sort of her thing now. Short synopsis, from the "Sometimes...you just have to be proud;-)" thread, mom wanted power and cool looks, the Camaro came out & she started seeing them. Wanted to drive one. Delayed a but still said, "only want to drive" and finally did. Afterwards, that was that, and within a month, this past Monday I took her to PA, the perfect Camaro 2LT RS had just rolled off the truck that morning, plastic wrap and all, and by evening it was hers and the '08 Malibu 2…

I'm 100% with XP on that, just as ALL Camaros and post 1949 Cadillacs should have hardtop greenhouses & NOT B-pillars w/ glued in fixed windows like some garbage-pile Japanese economy cars, real Chevy/GMC Trucks should have barn-doors, not lift-gates like a Honda Civic. Oh, the truck has 184,700 miles on it. Sooooo, guess how much I paid?

  17. I was still trying to hold out a little longer but I went to the mailbox and opened a letter from GM Card. I'd gotten a "top off" on my usable earnings from slightly over $ 2,000 to $ 3,000. They had to be used by January 31 which meant I couldn't order, so onto the Internet I went to GM web sites to locate the TOP 3 cars everyone knows I craved. Second runner-up: Pontiac Grand Prix This would have been my choice over the LaCrosse because it was a sporty sedan with a kick-ass dash and had the 3800 V6. My brother is a moron who can't spend money properly. So he bought a $h!ty VW Cabriolet from 1990 with busted mechanicals for a grand. He didn't even change the oil that sat in the car for nearly a decade and the water pump didn't function. So naturally, he nearly died while driving it. Because he's an idiot. I decided to find him something that would run properly, and reliable. The fringe benefit is that his pathetic sack of organs won't end up in anyone else's body. I'm doing the public a favour. So I found this: Clean, inside and out, with about 150,000kms (~95,000 miles). It's a 1993 EX-L, so it's loaded and has a sunroof. Best of all, it …

So today we finally got the other door on. We also put the horn back on it and painted the rockers. Not professional, but still a big improvement and a cheap and quick way to make it look decent until the real work is done. And here's the old door. Had it inspected after we did the work. Somehow it passed emissions, but more importantly it passed safety without a problem. Good times.

  21. Ever get one of those opportunities you never thought you would? I was given one over the weekend. I'm a manager at a local auto parts store and a guy named Cadillac Bill comes in often to buy stuff from me and we usually talk $h! and laugh and stuff for a while. He's called Cadillac Bill because he's been buying and selling Cadillacs for a living for nearly thirty years. Periodically he tells me about his finds and things he thinks I might be interested in. I started in Nissan, then moved to Mazda and have been with them ever since. It's a complete experience, and the owner's are more fanatical than any I've seen of the brands on sight, and the performance, quality, etc. Mazda was a brand I honestly didn't know much about before, but became all about very quickly. 24. My biological father recently moved back to Houston, and promptly totalled a nice 2005 Corolla. In looking for a replacement vehicle, the criteria for the new car was simple: Must be new, automatic, ABS, no more than $16,500, and must be a 4 door sedan - no hatchbacks. His experience with GM and Chrysler products...in the the 1980s and 1990s..meant that those cars were NOT allowed on the shopping list. Dad's was at first fixated on looking at a 2009 Corolla or Yaris. After much pleading, I managed to get the Aveo, Cobalt, and Focus on the consideration list. But those cars are hard to find with ABS. The only Aveos with ABS had other features which jacked the price…

I don't have it just yet but I am taking delivery of it this Saturday. What is it? I am buying a 1988 Buick ______. It was a deal I couldn't turn down and I love the car even though it is front wheel drive still. It has higher mileage, 156k miles but is still running strong. It has one rust spot which is quite huge but an easy fix. The car's interior is mint except for the center console in which the leather needs to be reupholstered. Tuesday I cleaned and painted the calipers, and put a "Cobalt" vinyl on the front calipers. Wednesday I finished all of my brakes, adding GM Performance drilled and slotted rotors on all four corners along with a set of "new" rims (18" ALT Sonix - black with polished inside lip) and tires (G-Force KDWs - 235/40ZR18). These are pictures I took of my Impala back when the weather was actually bearable outside. I have the original 396 in my shed, but the engine in the car now is a 454 out of a 70 Chevelle (I think). It runs pretty good, but the rear main seal is shot and the transmission doesn't shift correctly (might be a faulty solenoid or something, not sure). The heads on the 454 are actually off the old 396. I think if I keep her and do a proper restoration, I'll rebuild the 396 and sell the 454 to someone who wants to build a hot rod or something.

Well the weather's getting nice and that means its project time. For my car the first and foremost project is getting a/c system revamped before summer. I want air conditioning in my car. That of course means the whole dash has to come out to replace the evaporator core. Not a job I'm looking forward to doing. Most likely I'm also going to replace the heater core while I'm there. Preventative maintenance. Not counting the heater core, it looks like this job will run $400-$500 in parts. Evaporator core, expansion valve, dryer, compressor, and probably the low pressure line. The story goes that he was driving down the middle of the road an apparently hit something, or multiple things...I have no idea what. The clay bar works wonders (I've used it before on our old LSS and it did wonders to it's paint), and the Ice worked really well. It's basically a wax, but it's clear and you just apply it, let it sit for 5 minutes, wipe the area and then buff the area, and it looks great. It's much easier than your traditional paste wax and looks just as good; we'll see how it holds up (it claims it lasts for 3-4 months). So... I have a broken '70 Catalina 4 door hardtop. I picked it up about 10 years ago as a parts car, for its drivetrain. It was hit pretty hard in the front... but I still drove it home. I was surprised by how nice the interior/body was, and didn't have the heart to part it out immediately. The engine/tranny is still coming out, though. A little bit later I got a '70 Bonneville parts car... it was a rustbucket, and it was promptly disassembled. While looking at the two cars, it was obvious I could fix at least one car from the two. The major problem with the Catalina is the front frame horns... so I saved the horns from the Bonneville, in case I was going to attemp…

So I've got the Buick with its rebuilt 307 running beautifully, happy to have it back on the road. Now there is a '93 Caprice wagon with an LT1 on Craigslist for $600. No title, being sold as a parts car. I may go ahead and call the guy, but I'm thinking the LT1 transplant is more work than I want to do at the time.

Hey guys. I picked up a new car on Saturday. Now, some of you may know me well enough to guess what kind of car I'd buy, but I'm counting on it that most of you would have no clue. It'll keep you guys guessing while I wait for an opportune moment to take pics. All I'll tell you is that I stuck to my budget of less than $25,000. I'll post pics on Saturday or Sunday, shortly after I take them.

I'd never thought I'd see the day when I would own, of all things, a Buick, but here it sits in my driveway. I'd also never see the day when I would choose a Buick over a Trans Am, but again, here the Buick sits in my driveway and not the car I've aspired to own since I was a kid (well, okay, a second-generation T/A is what my heart really desires, but that's beside the point). The Monte, I think, went to a good home. The 383 stroker that I thought the Regal would have resting under its Grand National-sourced bonnet will find its way under the hood of my old car. The new owner also has a Monte LS parts car which will donate various bits and pieces to make my old Monte a…

Had to make a hard stop on the highway @ a light this morning, and blew out a brake line. I drove it back home (about 4 miles); I've had more than one experience piloting brake-compromised vehicles home. Seems like a simple enough repair; drop the fuel tank, the line goes from whatever the mid-cab distribution block back to the axle- maybe 7-ft (I didn't measure it).... but as a matter of course, I should just replace them all. Twin lines running forward are looking crusty, too. For the F of it, I called the dealer. It's less than 2 miles from me, and I'm on a first-name basis with the service guy via regular service on the Malibu. He told me he replaced all the lines on…

And it's got a 454 with 84K original miles. The body and paint are still in great shape, but it needs a little work to be roadworthy. Most of that we did this weekend - fabricating new brake lines and changing out the carburetor. All it needs is a set of tires and valid NYS plates and she'll be on the road again. And in case you guys didn't realize that I'm an Italian from New York, check out the clear plastic seat covers:

  85. My friend recently acquired a 1991 Camaro 1LE from his dad and he is trying to restore it back to factory specs now. The 383 currently in it will be removed and sold off while the original 305 will be dropped back in. It's basically a loaded car, with, as you can see, leather, Bose Sound, sunroof, auto climate control, and the Autobahn package as major options. It set me back $3718, though the Blue Book suggested value for it was around $5000. For the most part, it's mechanically sound, impressive at 112,416 miles, and the general concensus among my friends is that it's a sexy beast. It has a bad front hub assembly, which will need replacing soon. The leather on the driver seat is torn in one spot, and there's another tear towards the middle of the rear bench. The plastic…
