Operation Cut $10k Out Of The Volt Is 'On Track' William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com April 14, 2011 Remember when there was news about GM CEO Dan Akerson asking engineers to cut $10,000 out of the Chevrolet Volt. Well it looks like its happening, but for the next and third generation Volts. Alan Taub, GM vice president for global research and development said in an interview at the SAE World Congress that GM is on track for cutting costs. "We have a cost reduction plan all the way through 2020 and Generation 3. In fact, we've been challenged by our new leadership team to pull those earlier in time, and we're on track to meet our new cost …

I need something that will carry kid surfboards (70 inches) while getting excellent fuel economy year round. I'm deciding between a Toyota Matrix with a stick (i like to shift myself) or the Maxx (no stick, but a serene drive experience instead). I don't have the inside scoop on GM's Epsilon strategy. End of the Line: GM Builds Last Chevrolet SSR Date posted: 03-21-2006 LANSING, Michigan — Chevrolet's gorgeous but ill-starred SSR pickup/roadster has reached the end of the line. The last 2006 SSR rolled out of the General Motors Craft Centre here on Friday, March 17. During its brief three-year production run, GM built fewer than 25,000 SSRs, including just 789 units this year. The SSR was plagued by issues throughout its short lifespan, including quality problems, too much weight, not enough power and a breathtaking sticker price. The bottom line was dismal sales, resulting in mountains of unsold vehicles that stacked up on dealer lots. Despite numerous tweaks in…

My favorite before this run was the Enclave.. and because of it's styling.. still is. I just LOOOOOVE the smooth, sexy, sultry lines of the Buick more so than the more truck like look of the Acadia/Outlook. The Traverse uses a great deal of styling cues from the Buick. The Interior is, like all the Lambdas, magnificent. The Traverse is in my opinion, with exception to the Enclave, my favorite. Power was fluid and never needing to be pushed. I mean.. U won't and shouldn't be doing stoplight dra…

We rented an '07 Cobalt Coupe in Denver last weekend. Overall, it was a solid little car, and even after lots of flogging up and down mountainous roads, we averaged over 30 mpg...EXCELLENT! If there were any detractors, it would be the hard interior plastics and the wheezy-whiny mechanical noises from the engine. Of course, we're accustomed to driving cars in a different class - in our garage is a new Subaru Legacy and new Honda Civic. Also, for comparison notes, I recently rented an '07 PT Cruiser (handled almost a good as my Civic!!) and an '07 Jetta (supple, fast, but with weird engine noises). My final take: the Cobalt is an attractive, easy driver.

  60. Today, Chevrolet and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have released the numbers for the 2016 Volt and they are noticeably better than the outgoing model. The EPA rates the Volt at 106 Miles Per Gallon Equivalent (MPGe) combined when operating solely on electricity, and 42 MPG combined when the gas engine is running. To put this into perspective, the current Volt gets 98 MPGe when running on electricity and 39 MPG combined when the gas engine is running. Overall electric range has seen a big jump as well with the 2016 Volt. The EPA says the model will deliver 53 Miles of range on electric power alone. That is a huge increase compared to the 39 Miles of tot…

  61. Chevrolet has updated the Camaro for 2020 with some new styling updates and packaging changes. Most notable is the updated front fascia which received much criticism. The new front end appearance comes for the SS model based on the Camaro Shock show vehicle that debuted at the SEMA show last fall. The Bowtie emblem is now higher on the grille, and the bar between the upper and lower grilles is now body color. Also new is a new LT1 model that takes the Camaro LT trim and adds the 455 horsepower LT1 engine. This makes the LT1 trim the most affordable V8 Camaro with a starting price of $34,995 including destination charges. The LT1 will be offered in both hardto…

Inside Line Link Why We Bought It Chevrolet has never really had anything that could challenge the standouts of the economy-car class, the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. When Chevrolet finally replaced the aging Cavalier with the 2005 Cobalt, our hopes soared. Now Chevy's import fighter had a more powerful engine, sharper styling and a promise of improved build and materials quality. Naturally, we were curious enough to put one into our long-term fleet. We spec'd out a loaded 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt LT sedan. With leather seats, a moonroof, upgraded audio with XM radio and a rear spoiler, it listed for $20,100. With the employee discount and rebates we got it for $17,82…

Hey all, still relatively new to the forums but wanted your opinions on this. It has become a chip on my shoulder to read articles in magazines that downplay the domestics (namely in the 4 door and SUV segments). Question is this, with the Tahoe coming in next year, do you guys think that the magazine editors will either A. Commend it, give it a thumbs and and realize that domestics are making a move towards the imports throats. or B. Nitpick it, talk bad about it and give it a 3rd place or worse in a comparison test behind the Toyota Sequoia, 4runner, Honda Pilot, Nissan Pathfinder or otherwise. My concern isn't that the General wont make a strong showing with …

Its not bad considering the 4000lbs of weight my V8 Oldsmobile is pulling along, not to mention the heavy air conditioning draw on another unseasonably humid Florida day combined with the extra-legal cruising speed. Yet as I proudly note my impressive fuel economy, I realize that if I were using the car I was driving to see, I would be averaging just north of 80mpg. And for nearly half of the 106-mile trip from Clearwater to Orlando, I wouldn't have been using gasoline at all. On Monday, myself and Michael (Smallchevy) made the daytrip from Orlando to Miami to see what we may recall one day as the f…

  68. Chevrolet had a range of medium-duty trucks (class 4, 5, and 6) known as TopKick up until a decade ago. But today at NTEA The Work Truck Show, Chevrolet is coming back to the segment with a familiar name - Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD. The overall shape is similar to the Silverado HD, but the medium-duty trucks get a large grille and broad fenders. The models will only be built as chassis cabs with the choice of a regular or crew cab. Under the hood is a 6.6L Duramax turbodiesel V8 paired with an Allison transmission. Power figures stand at 350 horsepower and 700 pound-feet of torque. Before anyone asks, this is slightly different than the Duramax found in…

  69. Today I was eating at the dining center with a couple girls and somehow we got on the subject of what cars we drove. One of them said she used to have a Corolla but her parents recently bought her a Chevy Malibu. I assumed it was a '97-'03, but she said it was a 2004 so I thought that was kinda interesting. Then, as we were leaving, I overheard some guy say "No, I don't have the Civic anymore...I have a Cobalt now." I've also seen a ton of G6's around campus. Could GM be attracting a new generation of car buyers?

I have been all over the map with Chevy lately. In the past four years, I have worked in three different dealerships, driven three different models, test drove the Cruze, Sonic, Spark and Volt and wound up buying what is probably the least popular of the bunch. I had an Aveo.. then I 'upgraded' to the suspension headache and worsened build quality that was the Cobalt, and for some reason... insanity perhaps? I continue to go back to the mini-hatch Chev-woos. The Volt was a stunning car to drive, it was balanced well, had plenty of giddy-up and was nothing less than a technological leap in comparison to the other three cars I tested. BUT - the province I live in currentl…

And this was during GM's heyday, they were the undisputed engineering leaders in the industry back then. Even today, GM leads in patent applications year after year. Some things just do not work beyond novelty. GM knows that. <iframe width="480" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/YXxgatAznHU?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Amid all the new Camaro pics, rumors and speculations, I found two old articles from the December 1986 Motor Trend, back when FWD Camaro and Mustang rumors ran rampant. The Ford Probe proved the Mustang rumors wrong and the demise of the horrible GM-80 car and the introduction of the Chevy Beretta let the Camaro live on. You will laugh and cringe and what could have been for our beloved muscle car and see of screwed up GM (and the auto press) was in the 1980s. A 4-wheel drive 1988 IROC-Z? Don't remember that one.

Other factors such as weight, aerodynamics, transmission efficiency and friction within the engine has a greater bearing on mpg numbers. If you look at the automatic numbers and compare it to that of the Ford Focus which has a 2.0L engine, you'll notice that it is but 1~2 mpg off. Given that the non-Eco 1.4T Cruze (Automatic) is …

Caught undisguised, the 2016 Cruze shares a number of design items with the Chinese-market version that give it a somewhat tidy, if somewhat boring design. October 11, 2010 - Drew Dowdell This morning the automotive press' inter-tubes went all a flutter over the revelation that the just released Chevrolet Volt has a clutch that can engage the gasoline engine to the generator which could itself be connected to the wheels when the vehicle is running over 70mph and the battery is depleted. This prompted cries of "GM LIED!" and "IT'S JUST A HYBRID!" due to the fact that since near the beginning, GM has been marketing the Volt as an electric vehicle with an onboard range extender and it had no physical connection from engine to wheels.
