Buick
Founded in 1903 by David Dunbar Buick, Buick is one of America’s oldest automobile brands and the oldest active division of General Motors (GM). Known for pioneering innovations like the overhead valve engine, Buick became a symbol of affordable luxury throughout the 20th century. It played a key role in GM’s growth and today positions itself between Chevrolet and Cadillac, offering premium vehicles in both the U.S. and China—its largest market.

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 29, 2012 The Buick Grand National, T-Type, and GNX. Built during the mid to late eighties, these three were some of quickest vehicles on the market thanks to a 3.8L turbo V6 and didn't share the old person image that the other Buicks had. Now, the Grand National, T-Type, and GNX could be making a return to the Buick lineup. Inside Line has learned from a 'reliable source' that GM is planning to resurrect the three nameplates onto a new RWD sedan. The sedan will use the Alpha RWD platform and be around the same size as the Cadillac ATS. The sedans will also share steering, brakes and suspension from the ATS. The…

Describing a Buick as being bold seems somewhat strange, but the Enspire concept that debuted today in China is just that. Describing a Buick as being bold seems somewhat strange, but the Enspire concept that debuted today in China is just that. The overall shape is very different from Buick's current crossover lineup with a pronounced front end, deep cuts in the bumper, cameras mounted where the side-view mirrors would be, flared-out rear fenders, and a sharply raked rear end. The only interior shot provided by Buick is of the front. It looks very futuristic with the dash wrapped in microfiber suede and wood trim, OLED display, and a heads-up display featuring augme…

Well my wife has been whispering in my ear that she wants a new SUV to replace the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox LT AWD that she drives. I told her that's fine but I was not happy with the Chevy dealer that we used last time and her choices would be anything that Buick, Pontiac, GMC sells, so I can continue to get the great service from my Buick/Pontiac/GMC dealership that I receive. We are looking to buy about this time next year. Tonight we happened to be going by the dealership so we stopped to only looked at the Buick Enclave. This was a pretty loaded SUV (I might add it was hard to read anything on the sticker as the window was heavily tinted) and when I got to the sticker…

Golden boy Sajeev Mehta has written another underhanded review of Buick. Like much of the "buff press," he writes like his real-world car buying experience is limited to what mommy and daddy drive. Cars in the real world are about more than how fast you can go around a downhill corner. There's also, among other things, comfort for a family (not just your girlfriend) and overall value to consider. If these auto writers (what are Mehta's qualifications anyway?) had their way we'd all be driving around in kidney jarring, hard perched, over-engineered and over-priced Euro traps. He is right, though, about the CXL being a little more Buicky than the CXS. For me, more chr…

Yep, that time has come. The quick little mentionings of our '04 Suburban being too much of a gas hog than it's worth have gotten serious. It has trully done an awesome job of carting lots of people and lots of stuff when those times arose, but they too are getting few and far between anymore. And, let's face it, a Suburban is a little excessive for one person's daily commuting--and it's usually just that one person in there 90% of the time. But, I digress. Gas mileage, of course, is at the top of the requirements list for a prospective replacement. My mother has become a HUGE VW fan lately, especially because of the '05 Jetta TDI diesel a co-worker has that she th…

Made in China General Motors' next LaCrosse sedan is being designed right now … in China. That says a lot about GM, a lot about China, and even more about the future of creativity. William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com December 14, 2011 Next month's Detroit Auto Show is becoming more interesting as the days go by, with the new Dodge Dart, Mercedes-Benz SL, Cadillac ATS, Honda Accord, three Acuras, and now the Buick Encore. Buick released their first teaser shot of the new small crossover this afternoon. From what the picture shows the Encore will carry many Buick design trademarks, including a chrome waterfall grille, porthole vents and almond-shaped headlights with xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights with a blueish hue. Buick has also revealed the Encore will feature "QuietTuning" technology and will offer a similar feature…

Buick is bridging the generation gap, good news, according to Steve Purdy of the Auto Channel. Here's an especially nice portion of his review: "Buick general manager, Steve Shannon, reports a 'great start' since introduction last October with Lucerne accounting for 27% of large-car sales in the fourth quarter of last year and segment leading sales in December as well. 'We’re very pleased at how Lucerne is performing out of the gate,' he said. Lucerne has also won accolades from USA Today, The Detroit News and Kiplinger’s."

I think this is shaping up to be one nice compact sedan for Buick. It is clearly a sedan version of the new Astra, but it appears that GM took a little more effort in ensuring that the front end treatment fit in with the Enclave and 2010 LaCrosse. I provided a link to the article below (Sorry! I'm not sure how to import photos). Link: Baby Buick Spied With Less Camouflage, Source: World Car Fans P.S. I am disappointed that I don't see any ventiports. P.S.S. I also don't want to see this nice looking sedan carry the "Verano" name. I would still settle for "Vectra", personally.

[source: Left Lane News] Buick to Get Next-Gen Astra In 2011 General Motors will cut ties with its Saturn brand by the end of the year, but that won't mark the end of Opel vehicles in the United States. Saturn currently stands as GM's Opel import division, but that responsibility will soon switch over to Buick. Although rumors of an Opel-ized Buick have been swirling for some time now, GM' Product Board has officially signed off on the plan, according to GM Inside News. However, the first Opel-sourced Buick product will not be based on the Antara (Saturn Vue) or Insignia as first thought, but rather the Astra hatchback. The Saturn…

The website leftlane news.com is reporting that GM's application to use the name "Invicta" on a new Buick model is "dead" as of March 21, 2006. As they explained it, "Sometimes, automakers scrap applications entirely. Other times it cannot obtain the rights to the name . . . Just recently, there were rumors that the new Zeta-platform-based Buick sedan would be called the 'Invicta.' However, GM’s outspoken Bob Lutz said the car would be called the 'Statesman.' Looks like Mr. Lutz was right."

well I'm not exactly sure how to proncounce "Lucerne" But what does it mean? and that the point? I mean I know generally when you put STS or G6 or XLR... people would rather say Cadillac, Pontiac, Lexus, Mercedies Benz, etc... so is that the point of making a word that might seem difficult on the tounge to new comers? get people saying... "Thats that.. um.. that um... that BUICK" I mean its a great car and its kind of a shocker car for the buick line up... so many plain looking vehicles for so many years... Its almost a shock to say... you know... look at that buick! so I ask... why did the name Lucerne get chosen to be the new class le…

I got this from another website: Can any dealers please confirm? LaCrosse Super WAS at the dealer meeting in Vegas last weekend. It DID look like the China version (similar, imagine with oval grill like lucerne). It IS due out next summer, only in the CXS version which will come with the same V8 as the Impala SS. The 2008 CXL and CX *should* have the new front end as well, making the LaCrosse look more like the Lucerne.

I love Buick, not for what it currently is but for what it was back in the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s 80s, and even 90s. and more importantly what it COULD be. I went to the website the other day and was kind of saddened by the lackluster model lineup and crappy model names. With a rich history of awsome names like Century, Electra, Invicta, Riviera, Roadmaster, Regal, Centurion, LeSabre, Park Avenue, Super, Special, Skylark, Grand Sport, Grand National, Wildcat you'd think at least a fe of them owuld be used to resurrect the brand, but nope... instead we get two cars and two SUVs. The go-ahead has been given and next summer, Buick will launch the Envision crossover. According to Automotive News, Buick's chief Duncan Aldred told members of the Buick National Dealer Council yesterday and was planning to announce it to the rest of Buick's dealers today. Aldred confirmed the decision in an interview today. “Talk about a catalyst for the Buick brand and for volume growth. We’re putting in what I believe is a class-leading vehicle in the heart of the U.S. auto industry. This is massive for Buick,” said Aldred. Dealers have been wanting the Envision for quite a while now as it would fill a gap between the subcompact Encore and full-size Enclave. T…

[source: Motor Trend] First Drive: 2011 Buick Regal Pre-Production Prototype Have Opel and Buick Built a TSX-Fighter? November 19, 2009 By Frank Markus The 2011 Buick Regal is targeted at me. My last two family cars purchases have been a 2005 Acura TSX and a 1995 Infiniti G20. Our requirements were 1) a full roster of luxury features and toys, 2) four-cylinder fuel economy, and 3) long-haul durability (the G20 racked up 170,000 miles). I have no concerns about domestic-car reliability, but the Big Three haven't seriously attempted a four-banger luxmobile since the ill-fated Cadillac Cimarron. Now, with Buick training to go toe-to-toe with the Asi…

Ever since we first got our first look at the Opel/Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport and Sportwagon, we have been wondering when would see the next Buick Regal. Today at a press event at GM's Technical Center in Warren, MI, the 2018 Buick Regal made its debut in a hatchback and a wagon. We'll begin with the Regal hatchback or Sportback as the brand calls it. There isn't any significant design changes when compared to the Insignia aside from the badge swap. The only thing we would change are the wheels used in the media photos, they just don't fit the Regal at all. Next up is the Regal TourX (pronounced Tour X, not Tour Cross). Based on the Insignia Sports Tourer, Buic…

It's not the best-looking sedan Buick has ever made, but it's not ugly either and it has some good hardware under the skin. …

I happen to like the LaCrosse, but sales are down the past couple of months. It also gets some unfair criticism in the media, called bland by some. Bland=Camry. Anyway, what changes could be made before the '07 models start rolling out? More chrome? Portholes? I saw a picture somewhere of a LaCrosse with portholes (ebay I think) and it looked cool. My dealer told me some dealerships are putting the portholes on.

One of my biggest gripes with Buick is it appears the competition (and often cheaper cars that don't compete) have a lot more content, and better packaging. I have to jump up 3 trim levels or even go to the top trim to get certain features that are standard on a Corolla. Sure, the LaCrosse is a much nicer, larger car, but I can't help but feel at this price and time, some things should just be standard like Blind-zone monitoring. Then there's the gripe that in order to add one feature you often have to add several other expensive packages. Anyone else get frustrated? I know I have another year before I need to get my next car, but I want to start looking …

When the Buick Envision hits dealers in June, you'll only be able to get it in the two highest trims, along with a turbo engine and all-wheel drive. We first learned about this back at the Detroit Auto Show when speaking with a Buick representative and now we have more details. According to Automotive News, the 2016 Envision will start at $42,995 for the Premium I trim and $45,635 for the Premium II trim. Both prices include destination. These models will feature a 2.0 turbocharged four-cylinder with 252 horsepower and all-wheel drive. Now if those prices scare you, don't fret. Buick announced today that they are moving forward with a plan to make their entire lineup electric by the end of the decade. The first EV will come to the North American market in 2024 and all Buick EVs will carry the Electra name. Announced alongside the brand redirection is a new logo and font scheme. The logo is no longer circular, instead utilizes the tri-color shields mounted proudly on the front fascia of vehicles. The new logo will debut on vehicles starting next year while physical items like dealer signs will be updated over the next 12-16 months. Showcasing Buick's new design language is the Buick Wildcat EV Concept. This fastback 2+2 coupe has a l…

From the Wall Street Journal ORLANDO, Fla. -- General Motors Corp. (GM) announced some additions and subtractions to its Pontiac and Buick lines to dealers here a few days after its sales chief vowed a "renaissance" for the two model lines. Buick will get an "uplevel version" of the Buick LaCrosse sedan that will include new exterior trim and a new engine, Buick spokesman David Darovitz confirmed Tuesday. He said no price has been decided.

As we reported last month, Buick decided not to send the Avista into production. While the reason given at the time was due to not "enough enthusiasm for the concept," we had a sneaking suspicion there was more to that decision. Sure enough, Automotive News chatted with Buick global brand chief Duncan Aldred who explained the Avista wasn't "a massive opportunity in China." There is also the matter of priorities of which projects should go ahead or not. "Emotionally, you'd love to build it. I would buy one with my own money and put it in the garage," said Aldred. "The trouble is, I'm never looking at only one project. I'm always looking at several. I've got to …

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 30, 2012 Last year, a base Buick Regal started at $27,055. For 2013, the base Regal will now start at $29,015, a jump of almost $2,000. Why the $2,000 increase? Well, the Regal will be following in the LaCrosse's footsteps and offer the eAssist powertrain as standard equipment. eAssist was a $2,000 option on the Regal for 2012 and it has been rolled into pricetag. eAssist will improve the base Regal's fuel economy from 19 City/31 Highway to 25 City/36 Highway. A Motortrend blog article called the 2009 Toyota Venza that just debuted at the NAIAS... a Buick. http://blogs.motortrend.com/6226463/new-ca...uick/index.html I think that's stretching it. The Toyota Venza only wishes it was anything nearly as good looking as the Enclave. Yet the article makes the awkward Venza seem luxurious enough to even compare to the Enclave. In looks this thing is tanked and I don't see the Buick similarities (outside of the color) at all. *edit* maybe I can see it closer to the Signia Concept

Is the Lambda platform flexible enough for GM to develop a sedan off of this vehicle? Hopefully a Buick sedan that would give this division something unique from the other GM divisions. Possibly a car above the Lucerne would be really nice.

Jamie LaReau Automotive News / January 16, 2006 http://autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?...B/60113035/1115 DETROIT - The Buick Enclave crossover concept vehicle shown at the Detroit auto show is "99 percent" similar to the production version, says Robert Lutz, GM's vice chairman and global product chief. One difference: The concept version seats six; the production version will seat seven. Ed Welburn, GM's vice president of global design, says the Enclave's new interior style, called "Heritage Forward," uses wood and leather and has adjustable individual seats. Like Buick's new Lucerne sedan, the Enclave has the brand's signature portholes in the front fenders. Th…

As a Buick owner, I receive a magazine by Buick every season called "The Style Review." (I definitely look forward to it ^_^ ) I just received the Fall 2005 issue and on the cover is a Lucerne. My first thought was "That grille looks like it's all chrome..." but I immediately rejected the idea as light reflecting off of the Lucerne's glossy black grille. So I looked inside. By page 16, there was no doubt about it. Both of the Lucernes pictured have chrome grilles. I scanned in the cover and page 16 so you guys can check it out. (as a side note, they also have an article titled “Seattle on our Minds” on pages 26-29 where they're touring Seattle in a Park Avenue! Ho…

Last month, Buick introduced a new crossover for China called the Envision. This new crossover would fit between the Encore and Enclave models Now there have been murmurs of whether or not the Envision would be coming to the U.S. or not. According to Edmunds, the Envision is making the trip to the U.S. next year. According to a insider, the Envision will go sale in the third quarter of 2015. There is talk of a mild-hybrid model for the U.S. market. When asked, Duncan Aldred, vice president of Buick-GMC sales said nothing has been confirmed at the moment. But went onto say that the brand is considering it. Source: Edmunds William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers &…

Ok, I go home tomorrow but I have been in Florida and Atlanta for the last 2 weeks. I've seen Enclaves on the road, in parking lots and at the dealerships. Kudos for the great workmanship and packaging. However, this vehicle is way too rounded, bulbous and has not much going for it in the way of sleekness. I absolutely detest the pillar behind the rear passenger door and the rear storage area. I'm sure that it will be a fine vehicle and that some will definitely like it. I hope it does well because Buick (and GM) can use all the victories they can muster. However, this is a car I would NOT buy if this were my segment. Your poll opinion and any comments?

Brown is the new Buick Enclave's cocoa metallic could be new color of luxury Sharon Terlep | The Detroit News Once synonymous with grit and grime, brown has come to embody something entirely different for a generation of Starbucks-obsessed consumers. Something luxurious, tasty even. A little like a latte. At least that's the thinking behind General Motors Corp.'s decision to launch one of its most critical new vehicles -- the Buick Enclave crossover -- in a brunette hue called cocoa metallic. Brown rides haven't been hip since the 1970s. But GM is banking on a brown renaissance, already under way in the worlds of fashion and interior design, to take hold in the auto…

To help GM meet new U.S. fuel-economy standards, Buick, Pontiac, and GMC may each add a new smaller vehicle. According to Jan. 15, 2008 news reports, "Potential additions include a sedan shorter than the Buick LaCrosse, a crossover sport-utility vehicle more compact than the GMC Acadia and a Pontiac small car," said Jim Bunnell, general manager for the division that includes the three brands. The U.S. regulations "have thrown everything on its head," Bunnell said. "We most likely will need smaller market entries to get in line." For Buick, could this be the NG Chinese Excelle, due later this year? Have there been rumors that it will be re-named "Skylark"?

The company ignored warnings 20 years ago that changes were needed. Is it too late? By John O'Dell, Times Staff Writer April 2, 2006 Buick was the seed from which General Motors Corp. sprouted. And for generations, the luxury car line was one of GM's most bountiful divisions. The Buick brand filled a crucial niche for the auto giant, attracting well-heeled consumers who wanted more than an Oldsmobile but weren't comfortable with the flash of a Cadillac. Now as GM faces the threat of bankruptcy, Buick has emerged as an emblem of the auto giant's broader woes. GM sold nearly a million Buicks in the U.S. in 1984. By last year, sales had sputtered to 282,288, a 70% dec…

Buick has pulled back the curtain on the refreshed 2019 Envision crossover. It may seem crazy for a brand to refresh their model only a couple years after its debut. But we need to remember that Buick has been selling the Envision in China since 2014, so it is about the time when a refresh takes place. The big news is with the transmission. A nine-speed automatic becomes standard on turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder. It's a nice pairing, especially since Buick has upped the torque figure from 260 to 295 pound-feet. Horsepower remains at 252. Sadly, the base 2.5L four-cylinder sticks with a six-speed automatic. There are some minor changes for the Envision's exterio…

The crossover fever has really hit Buick as they claim "almost 90 percent of U.S." sales come from their utility lineup. So why not add another crossover to their lineup? Buick announced today the Encore GX which will go on sale early next year. Coming from China, the model will slot between the Encore and Envision. Not many details were provided aside from the cargo space being " almost 5 cubic feet larger than the Encore and about 3 cubic feet smaller than the Envision." Car and Driver reports that the GX will have a slightly more powerful turbo-four when compared to the Encore; automatic transmission, and the choice of either front or all-wheel drive. “As w…

Before the Detroit Auto Show kicks off Monday, a few automakers will have events around Detroit. Buick will be one of those as they'll be showing off the new Envision crossover. But there is something else waiting in the wings. This week, The Detroit News learned that Buick will have a big premiere at the event. Officials at Buick were keeping their lips shut as to what this may be. “We have a very special program, and we had a surprise last year, so we’ll see if we can do something this year as well,” Duncan Aldred, U.S. vice president of Buick. However, Bloomberg may have learned what the surprise is. A source says the other vehicle will be a sporty coupe concep…

There are many threads on C&G addressing bits and pieces of Buick's future line-up. Based on available facts plus some speculation, I believe that Buick has and will receive the bulk of the $3 billion promised for their revitalization. Due to higher priorities over the last few years, the plans and cadence of Buick's new vehicles had to be delayed or changed. Again, based on available facts plus some speculation, here is what I foresee as their present intentions, to make Buick "elegant, graceful and incredibly sophisticated": GMT*** = Lambda crossover sport-utility = 2008 Buick Enclave [ production begins late 2006 ] GMX*** = W body with upgraded powerplant / re…

I just received the most recent edition of Motor Trend and they tested the big 3 large V6 American sedans (no Avalon or Azera). 1: Chrysler 300 2: Buick Lucerne 3: Mercury Montego I figured they would rate the Montego higher based on what the article said. Apparently, the Montego had the nicest interior of the bunch and handled well, too. It even beat the Lucerne to 60MPH and it had AWD. The 300 ended up being the most well rounded of the bunch.

When I was drooling over the Enclave pics, I started to wonder what the other Lambdas would look like, and then I remembered that there is a Buick minivan off Lambda planned. With the Enclave though, there'd be no reason to make it. Seriously, how many people are going to buy a minivan over the Enclave just because of sliding doors? Here are some reasons why there is no need for a Buick minivan: 1) A large portion of possible sales of the minivan would just go to the Enclave instead. 2) If they're going to do a Buick minivan, I think we agree it should be well differeniated from its lesser siblings, and this means increased development dollars. 3) If you're on a t…

So, I'm flipping through the recent Automobile... Came across a short section on the Enclave where it said "Other than the Buick ventiports and grille, [the Enclave] is completely generic" And then this jewel: (Might not be the exact quote) "The aluminum on the dash looks like an unrefined knife blade and the REAL wood looks FAKE." ***This is further proof that the anti-GM media sentiment is TOO powerful for GM to overcome. I said it with the Solstice and I'll say it again; GM will NEVER be good enough for the media. The Enclave is BEAUTIFUL, yet this is the respect GM gets.... Here are some pictures I took of the Silver 2010 Buick Allure CXL at the Montreal International Autoshow in Quebec, Canada on Tuesday January 20th. This was a Canadian show debut. Off the bat, I have to say that the interior is beautiful!!! The car looks very striking as a whole, and the best angle in my opinion is the rear 3/4. I noticed this model had slightly different headlights than what the press pictures showed. The sweapspear looks cool in person, although the general proportions of the car will take some getting used to. VIDEO:

Found an open Verano today on a Buick lot. Again, blown away at how nice it is inside. Really still love the Regal more, but the Verano is 92% the size and such, just a little more different and tidy...... not as pricey..... I wonder how much the Verano launch is eating up Regals. I know Buick is trying to move Regal up the ladder with more kit and better powertrains, but the cars side by side are damn near the same size, and the Regal is not too much bigger inside either. I know the old size is everything adage is dying in this market some, but at under 25g, a base Verano is damn nice, why spend 30 on a Regal?

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com February 7, 2012 Today, Buick announced some powertrain changes for the 2013 Regal. First, the 2013 Regal will bid adieu to the base 2.4L four-cylinder and make the Regal eAssist the base. The Regal eAssist uses a 2.4-liter inline-four engine with a 15-kW electric motor to return EPA fuel economy ratings of 25 City/36 Highway MPG. Also, the Regal GS gains an optional six-speed automatic transmission. The automatic is designed to broaden the appeal of the Regal GS. Buick says the automatic Regal GS can reach 60 in 6.7 seconds and return 19 City/27 Highway MPG, identical to the manual transmission. The Automatic is a no…
