Buick
Founded in 1903 by David Dunbar Buick, Buick is one of America’s oldest automobile brands and the oldest active division of General Motors (GM). Known for pioneering innovations like the overhead valve engine, Buick became a symbol of affordable luxury throughout the 20th century. It played a key role in GM’s growth and today positions itself between Chevrolet and Cadillac, offering premium vehicles in both the U.S. and China—its largest market.

According to Automotive News, Buick is to get a new tag line and an ad campaign to change perception of its vehicles. AN's website states, "Buick will get a new advertising campaign for the brand and the new LaCrosse sedan this summer. The campaign will have a different tag line, too, from Buick's current 'Drive Beautiful.' Buick chief Susan Docherty said General Motors realizes the brand suffers from a consumer perception that its vehicles are for elderly, conservative buyers. That perception has contributed to a sharp sales slide for Buick from its glory years." My guess would be "The Craft of Modern Luxury." What do YOU think?

Buick's compact convertible, the Buick Cascada, won't be returning for 2020. Buick has informed dealers that final orders for the car need to be in by the end of the month as production of the car is scheduled to end in the summer. The Cascada is produced by GM's former Opel division, now owned by PSA, in Poland. The Cascada was Buick's first convertible since the the Buick Reatta. Approximately 17,000 have been sold since the car went on sale in 2016. The discontinuation of the Cascada, along with the pending departure of the LaCrosse, mark Buick's slow creep towards being an all-crossover brand. View full article

Hey guys, I haven't posted on here in a really long time, but I'm thinking about leasing a new Regal and wanted your input. I'm most intrigued by the Turbo Premium II with Driver's Confidence Package--I think it has a good combination of looks, power, equipment, and luxury. I was really close to buying a used Acura TSX V6, but I think the Quiet Tuning (do they still use that term?) and more modern electronics make the Buick a better option. What do you all think of the current Regal Turbo? Is there a much better replacement coming soon that I should know about? Also, do you anticipate some sort of major sale/incentive program coming soon, maybe at the end of the model…

Buick may be sold to Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC). To get the details, read the article linked below. The rapidly slimming General Motors might soon cast off another brand, according to a Chinese media report. General Motors is considering selling its Buick division to the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC), according to financial newspaper the Shanghai Securities News. The deal could potentially involve a sale the Buick name only, or it could include the sale of plants, tooling, and designs to SAIC. Buick is extremely popular in China, despite its relatively limited success in America. The Obama administration has apparently asked Ge…

The Buick Envision finds itself in a tough spot. General Motors has been exporting the model to the U.S. since 2016. But with the on-going trade-war between the U.S. and China, it means the Envision could smacked with a 25% percent tariff. That is why GM is asking for exemption on the model. In a statement provided to Reuters, GM said that it filed the exemption request on July 30th to the U.S. Trade Representative. In the request, GM makes some sound arguments as to why the Envision should be excluded. Price is major factor. If the vehicle is hit with a 25 percent tariff, GM would be forced to pull it from the U.S. unless it wants to a take serious loss on each…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com December 14, 2011 Next month's Detroit Auto Show is becoming more interesting as the days go by, with the new Dodge Dart, Mercedes-Benz SL, Cadillac ATS, Honda Accord, three Acuras, and now the Buick Encore. Buick released their first teaser shot of the new small crossover this afternoon. From what the picture shows the Encore will carry many Buick design trademarks, including a chrome waterfall grille, porthole vents and almond-shaped headlights with xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights with a blueish hue. Buick has also revealed the Encore will feature "QuietTuning" technology and will offer a similar feature…

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Buick-CXL-B...1QQcmdZViewItem The door panels look great, better than the DTS's, but the dash... it's just lacking something. The HVAC/stereo controls look particularly downmarket. And outside, from the side, it looks like a flattened asymmetrical bell. Still, nice to see progress. Most of the materials look fine. And the anthracite wheels look great, though they don't fit the car's body. Unlike the Lucerne, the DTS doesn't look like it's floating, even with the 17" wheels.

GM seeks quiet riot for Enclave 2008 crossover boasts soundproofing features in a bid to compete with Lexus, Mercedes-Benz. Sharon Terlep / The Detroit News MILFORD -- General Motors Corp. will employ an arsenal of soundproofing technology in hopes of making its upcoming Buick Enclave crossover one of the quietest rides on the road. Buick officials said Thursday that the brand will face off with the likes of Lexus and Mercedes-Benz when the five-door luxury crossover debuts next year as a 2008 model. The Enclave will be built at GM's new $1 billion plant in Delta Township near Lansing. GM hopes a sleek exterior, laminated steel and perforated leather seats that abs…

Buick Wants to Bring in the Black Guys If more blacks start driving Buicks it could help the brand overcome its biggest problem: the perception that it is a boring, old person's car. That's the view of Steve Shannon, Buick's general manager. He says blacks are the most loyal Buick customers and he wants more of them. Not only do blacks of all ages buy a lot of cars, he says that young blacks, particularly athletes and hip-hop artists, help define urban hipness. Autoweek

According to Automotive News, Encore: The "Baby Enclave" compact crossover, tentatively called the Encore, will arrive in the 2013 model year. The five-seater is built on the Delta compact-car platform. Why use the Delta platform (which is on the Chevy Cruze) rather than Theta-Epsilon (which is a second-generation SRX)? I thought Buick would be a premium marque, not a Chevy clone. I could understand if the next-gen Equinox and Terrain go to Delta 2, but why a Buick?

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com June 12, 2012 The Buick Verano. A compact that has left many (including your's truly) very smitten with it. The only real complaint that has been brought up is a more powerful engine. Well, Buick has answered the call with the new 2013 Verano Turbo. Under the hood lies a potent 2.0L DI turbocharged Ecotec inline-four delivering 250 HP and 260 lb-ft torque going through either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. This is second exciting Buick following the Regal GS introduced earlier this year. Think of the last time there was two exciting Buicks, let alone one. That 2.0L turbo can give a 0-60 time of 6.2 sec…

2008 Buick Park Avenue Might Come Stateside! Reaction to the Chinese Park Avenue has made GM reconsider bringing the Park Avenue over to the US. The original plan was to do a full reskin on the car a la Enclave, however GM is now planning to bring the Chinese Park Avenue to America as early as Spring of next year. Built in Australia, their will be a decontented base model starting at around $40k, excluding the luxury features of the top end model. The ultra-luxury model will be offered, with all the features of the Park Avenue sold in China. Finally, GM will have a true luxury car, and suprisingly, it will come from Buick. Base engine for the Park Avenue is rumored…

The website leftlane news.com is reporting that GM's application to use the name "Invicta" on a new Buick model is "dead" as of March 21, 2006. As they explained it, "Sometimes, automakers scrap applications entirely. Other times it cannot obtain the rights to the name . . . Just recently, there were rumors that the new Zeta-platform-based Buick sedan would be called the 'Invicta.' However, GM’s outspoken Bob Lutz said the car would be called the 'Statesman.' Looks like Mr. Lutz was right."

A vehicle that many Buick dealers and a number of us here at Cheers & Gears have been wanting for a while could finally be arriving next year. Automotive News and the Wall Street Journal report that the Buick Envision will be coming to the U.S. Sources tell AN that General Motors is likely to green light the Envision for export to the U.S. as early as late spring. The Wall Street Journal says the company is targeting annual sales of 30 to 40,000 Envisions per year. Now the Envision would be the first vehicle sold by the Detroit 3 that is imported from China. It will not be the first Chinese-built vehicle sold in the U.S., that honor goes to Volvo with the S60 Insc…

Just saw some 09 Lucernes freshly delivered. Shockingly they were rated at one better city and highway than last years 3800 V6 at 17/26 vs 16/25. And these are non AFM 3900's from what I can tell. They must have coaxed a tad more mileage out of the regular detuned 227 HP version of this engine compared to the G6 convertible with it's 15/22 rating. The Lucernes 2.93:1 gears probably help too!

As we reported last month, Buick decided not to send the Avista into production. While the reason given at the time was due to not "enough enthusiasm for the concept," we had a sneaking suspicion there was more to that decision. Sure enough, Automotive News chatted with Buick global brand chief Duncan Aldred who explained the Avista wasn't "a massive opportunity in China." There is also the matter of priorities of which projects should go ahead or not. "Emotionally, you'd love to build it. I would buy one with my own money and put it in the garage," said Aldred. "The trouble is, I'm never looking at only one project. I'm always looking at several. I've got to …

Ever since we first got our first look at the Opel/Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport and Sportwagon, we have been wondering when would see the next Buick Regal. Today at a press event at GM's Technical Center in Warren, MI, the 2018 Buick Regal made its debut in a hatchback and a wagon. We'll begin with the Regal hatchback or Sportback as the brand calls it. There isn't any significant design changes when compared to the Insignia aside from the badge swap. The only thing we would change are the wheels used in the media photos, they just don't fit the Regal at all. Next up is the Regal TourX (pronounced Tour X, not Tour Cross). Based on the Insignia Sports Tourer, Buic…

On the Buick website, the vehicles listed are....Enclave, LaCrosse, Lucerne, Invicta....not in future vehicles, but the concept does pull up. Think we'll get a surprise and it will be called Invicta after all? Hopefully...the ridiculous, meaningless LaCrosse name should die a quick death, just like the W body. Also, if Invicta is to eventually replace Lucerne, they're going to need something better than LaCrosse. I don't know one import buyer that would EVER consider a "LaCrosse". It will be hard enough to get any young, successful professional to consider a Buick, period. Here's hoping for the best.....

Golden boy Sajeev Mehta has written another underhanded review of Buick. Like much of the "buff press," he writes like his real-world car buying experience is limited to what mommy and daddy drive. Cars in the real world are about more than how fast you can go around a downhill corner. There's also, among other things, comfort for a family (not just your girlfriend) and overall value to consider. If these auto writers (what are Mehta's qualifications anyway?) had their way we'd all be driving around in kidney jarring, hard perched, over-engineered and over-priced Euro traps. He is right, though, about the CXL being a little more Buicky than the CXS. For me, more chr…

Earlier this month, we reported that the Buick Verano would be leaving at the end of the 2017 model year. This is due to the sales sliding down due in part to the success of crossovers such as the Encore. At the time, General Motors declined to comment on the story. Today, they have made it official. In a statement provided to Automotive News, General Motors said Verano production would wind down at its Lake Orion plant in October. The model will have an abbreviated 2017 model year. The decision as to why comes down to crossovers. “When we’re thinking about where we’re investing for the future, with the whole market moving toward SUVs, that’s where we want to put …

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com February 7, 2012 Today, Buick announced some powertrain changes for the 2013 Regal. First, the 2013 Regal will bid adieu to the base 2.4L four-cylinder and make the Regal eAssist the base. The Regal eAssist uses a 2.4-liter inline-four engine with a 15-kW electric motor to return EPA fuel economy ratings of 25 City/36 Highway MPG. Also, the Regal GS gains an optional six-speed automatic transmission. The automatic is designed to broaden the appeal of the Regal GS. Buick says the automatic Regal GS can reach 60 in 6.7 seconds and return 19 City/27 Highway MPG, identical to the manual transmission. The Automatic is a no…

Essentially, no changes, as we already know. The standard content has gone up to include the leather wheel, the tilt and telescope and a few other items. The optional package is $ 495, which includes (1) the folding rear seat, (2) the power lumbar, and (3) heated seats. I guess that's not SO bad, since the split rear seat cost $ 275 last M.Y. Comment on styling: the new front end is better but not THAT great. IMO, it is TOO tall for the front fascia and the chrome bars are too pronounced. The new shape is definitely the way it should have been, but it should have been a little more understated. Did not bother to get inside. It was 106 degrees in Sin City today…

There are many threads on C&G addressing bits and pieces of Buick's future line-up. Based on available facts plus some speculation, I believe that Buick has and will receive the bulk of the $3 billion promised for their revitalization. Due to higher priorities over the last few years, the plans and cadence of Buick's new vehicles had to be delayed or changed. Again, based on available facts plus some speculation, here is what I foresee as their present intentions, to make Buick "elegant, graceful and incredibly sophisticated": GMT*** = Lambda crossover sport-utility = 2008 Buick Enclave [ production begins late 2006 ] GMX*** = W body with upgraded powerplant / re…

The next generation of Buick's flagship, the 2025 Buick Enclave, launched today. [source: Motor Trend] First Drive: 2011 Buick Regal Pre-Production Prototype Have Opel and Buick Built a TSX-Fighter? November 19, 2009 By Frank Markus The 2011 Buick Regal is targeted at me. My last two family cars purchases have been a 2005 Acura TSX and a 1995 Infiniti G20. Our requirements were 1) a full roster of luxury features and toys, 2) four-cylinder fuel economy, and 3) long-haul durability (the G20 racked up 170,000 miles). I have no concerns about domestic-car reliability, but the Big Three haven't seriously attempted a four-banger luxmobile since the ill-fated Cadillac Cimarron. Now, with Buick training to go toe-to-toe with the Asi…

So....CTS went in for some minor warranty work....and I snagged a brand-spanking-new Enclave CXL as a loaner!!!!! It's so refreshing and exciting to get into a brand-new GM product and have such a strong "feel-good" reaction because the product is not only good-looking, but makes you feel so good to sit in and drive. This is a new GM product that really needs no excuses.........and man does it get looks on the road! The Enclave is so impressive in person and when you are behind the wheel, it made me search out RX350s, BMW X5s, and Audi Q7s.....just to see those owners' reactions to this sylish new Buick. The sales people at a Ford/Lincoln store I was at (to see a clie…

Is the Lambda platform flexible enough for GM to develop a sedan off of this vehicle? Hopefully a Buick sedan that would give this division something unique from the other GM divisions. Possibly a car above the Lucerne would be really nice.

I have been looking for a replacement for my 1999 Park Avenue Ultra (the flagship of its day) and according to my local dealer, the Enclave is now considered the flagship for Buick. I really really like the Enclave, but why is a large Lambda crossover considered a flagship? More importantly, why can't Buick get a car that can properly compete with that NEW 2011 Chrysler 300 (or should that be a flagship Cadillac too?)? Indeed, why can't Buick and/or Cadillac get an upgraded version of the Hyundai Genesis as a flagship? Any thoughts? FWD crossovers do NOT a flagship make, IMHO.

The word is out that Buick is to take Saturn's place as the Opel rebadger for the US. A VUE redeux is to be the first model based on this unconfirmed report. Final word to come down by June 1st deadline. Link to Leftlane article here.

When I was drooling over the Enclave pics, I started to wonder what the other Lambdas would look like, and then I remembered that there is a Buick minivan off Lambda planned. With the Enclave though, there'd be no reason to make it. Seriously, how many people are going to buy a minivan over the Enclave just because of sliding doors? Here are some reasons why there is no need for a Buick minivan: 1) A large portion of possible sales of the minivan would just go to the Enclave instead. 2) If they're going to do a Buick minivan, I think we agree it should be well differeniated from its lesser siblings, and this means increased development dollars. 3) If you're on a t…

I think this is shaping up to be one nice compact sedan for Buick. It is clearly a sedan version of the new Astra, but it appears that GM took a little more effort in ensuring that the front end treatment fit in with the Enclave and 2010 LaCrosse. I provided a link to the article below (Sorry! I'm not sure how to import photos). Link: Baby Buick Spied With Less Camouflage, Source: World Car Fans P.S. I am disappointed that I don't see any ventiports. P.S.S. I also don't want to see this nice looking sedan carry the "Verano" name. I would still settle for "Vectra", personally.

Describing a Buick as being bold seems somewhat strange, but the Enspire concept that debuted today in China is just that. Describing a Buick as being bold seems somewhat strange, but the Enspire concept that debuted today in China is just that. The overall shape is very different from Buick's current crossover lineup with a pronounced front end, deep cuts in the bumper, cameras mounted where the side-view mirrors would be, flared-out rear fenders, and a sharply raked rear end. The only interior shot provided by Buick is of the front. It looks very futuristic with the dash wrapped in microfiber suede and wood trim, OLED display, and a heads-up display featuring augme…

Despite Bob Lutz touting Buick as an American Lexus. I think GM is killing the idea of Buick as a luxury brand like Lexus below Cadillac. Zeta was cancelled because, GM did not see RWD having much of a future beyond Cadillac & sports cars. When GM made the annoucement about Zeta's demise in NA, GM was falling on hard financial times again. So, GM wanted to look as if it were cutting costs. Which was true but, it also had to do with a rejection of any brand brand but, Cadillac going mainstream with RWD. This is not to say that Buick won't have RWD. It just won't be beyond halo vehicles. So, what is Buick likely to be then. Well, Buick will be the most prem…

In a blog, Paul Eisenstein of The Car Connection revealed on January 11, 2008 that what we're seeing as the Buick Riviera Concept Vehicle is, in fact, a good indication of what the NG Buick LaCrosse will look like. Eisenstein says, in part, "In production form, as the next LaCrosse, the prototype will give up the gullwings and gain an additional two conventional doors. The 'Shanghai-by-night' interior will be toned down a fair degree, but the overall resemblance will be obvious and, insiders insist, striking. The cabin will boast a much more Lexus-like look . . . 'It will be one killer LaCrosse,' promises [ Dave ] Lyon [ of GM ]." To read the entire report, click here…

I had such a blast with this chop that I had to see what others thought about expanding the Buick line-up to include such a vehicle. It was posted first over in the "smaller car under LaCrosse" topic, and I didn't want to clutter the compact discussion with crossover fantasy. Talk about the design you would envision. Let your thoughts be known on what platform, what content, etc. that such a vehicle should have. Would it attract the younger buyers, as well as the older segment? Could such a vehicle compete in the near-luxury 5-seater market? I'll take one in my garage! Invicta Compact Crossover Concept Invicta Compact Crossover Concept Rear

Curious to know, what is the current future status of the Lucerne? I'll be honest I have never really been interested in one before but big incentives on them lately have led me to look into them and it seems like a good buy? Just want to know, is 2010 the last year, or 2011? The 3.9 is new for 2009. ANyone have any experience driving the Lucerne with this powertrain? Decent power? I knows its still the 4 speed........ Will the v8 be discontinued? I think I have seen a few SUpers still on the lots. The numbers still tell a story, though, so we present "IL Track Tested." It's a quick rundown of all the data we collected at the track, along with comments direct from the test drivers. Enjoy. Try to forget the awful commercials for the 2010 Buick LaCrosse for a moment. As ill-conceived as those pathetic attempts to make Buick look cool may have been, the car doesn't really need that much help. It's not the best-looking sedan Buick has ever made, but it's not ugly either and it has some good hardware under the skin. …

A Motortrend blog article called the 2009 Toyota Venza that just debuted at the NAIAS... a Buick. http://blogs.motortrend.com/6226463/new-ca...uick/index.html I think that's stretching it. The Toyota Venza only wishes it was anything nearly as good looking as the Enclave. Yet the article makes the awkward Venza seem luxurious enough to even compare to the Enclave. In looks this thing is tanked and I don't see the Buick similarities (outside of the color) at all. *edit* maybe I can see it closer to the Signia Concept

Buick announced today that they are moving forward with a plan to make their entire lineup electric by the end of the decade. The first EV will come to the North American market in 2024 and all Buick EVs will carry the Electra name. Announced alongside the brand redirection is a new logo and font scheme. The logo is no longer circular, instead utilizes the tri-color shields mounted proudly on the front fascia of vehicles. The new logo will debut on vehicles starting next year while physical items like dealer signs will be updated over the next 12-16 months. Showcasing Buick's new design language is the Buick Wildcat EV Concept. This fastback 2+2 coupe has a l…

GM Expects 40% Conquest Rate with Enclave When the 2008 Buick Enclave goes on sale next year, General Motors Corp. expects up to 40% of the new SUV's customers to come from other automakers, Steve Shannon, Buick's general manager, said Thursday. GM has not revealed pricing for the midsize model, which uses a car-like structure to provide better fuel economy, more room and more comfort than traditional SUVs like the Chevrolet TrailBlazer. However, the Enclave's targets, the upscale -- but smaller -- Acura MDX and Lexus RX350, have base prices of $39,995 and $37,400, respectively. Detroit Free Press

Has changing the name from Lesabre to Lucerne improved sales? And Lucerne also replaces Park Avenue. Ditto to Lacrosse replacing Century and Regal. Could we say that familiar nameplates require less money marketing the product? How about following the Taurus and change back to old beloved nameplates? Lacrosse replacement becomes Century. Lucerne (goofy French sounding name) becomes LeSabre.

The go-ahead has been given and next summer, Buick will launch the Envision crossover. According to Automotive News, Buick's chief Duncan Aldred told members of the Buick National Dealer Council yesterday and was planning to announce it to the rest of Buick's dealers today. Aldred confirmed the decision in an interview today. “Talk about a catalyst for the Buick brand and for volume growth. We’re putting in what I believe is a class-leading vehicle in the heart of the U.S. auto industry. This is massive for Buick,” said Aldred. Dealers have been wanting the Envision for quite a while now as it would fill a gap between the subcompact Encore and full-size Enclave. T…

Yep, that time has come. The quick little mentionings of our '04 Suburban being too much of a gas hog than it's worth have gotten serious. It has trully done an awesome job of carting lots of people and lots of stuff when those times arose, but they too are getting few and far between anymore. And, let's face it, a Suburban is a little excessive for one person's daily commuting--and it's usually just that one person in there 90% of the time. But, I digress. Gas mileage, of course, is at the top of the requirements list for a prospective replacement. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 30, 2012 Last year, a base Buick Regal started at $27,055. For 2013, the base Regal will now start at $29,015, a jump of almost $2,000. Why the $2,000 increase? Well, the Regal will be following in the LaCrosse's footsteps and offer the eAssist powertrain as standard equipment. eAssist was a $2,000 option on the Regal for 2012 and it has been rolled into pricetag. eAssist will improve the base Regal's fuel economy from 19 City/31 Highway to 25 City/36 Highway. Regal Wagon Is Not Happening William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com September 8, 2011 Earlier in the year, spy shots floated around of a Buick Regal Wagon parked outside at one of GM's buildings. Inside Line has gotten an answer on the record from a Buick spokesman on the Regal Wagon. The spokesman says, "Absolutely not. There is no Regal Wagon in our future plans." Source: Inside Line
