On Wednesday, General Motors invited a number of media to their tech center in Warren, MI for their EV Day event. The company is making a big bet on electric vehicles with 11 new vehicles rolling out by 2025, featuring a new electric modular platform and battery tech. Here's what we know. Third-Generation Electric Vehicle Platform Underpinning this massive push is GM's new third-generation EV platform (BEV3). The new platform was designed to provide flexibility for different vehicle types - ranging from compact cars to pickup trucks. Battery packs are designed to be mounted beneath the passenger compartment to allow for a lower center of gravity. This results in more…

The UAW declared a national strike against General Motors, a first since 2007, after GM failed to reach a deal with union leaders over wages and benefits. A union spokesman said it was a unanimous vote to strike and that the status of the negotiations are unclear. General Motors said that its offer to the UAW included more than $7 billion in U.S. investments, jobs, higher pay, and improved benefits. It included an offer for more than 5,400 jobs, the majority of which would be new. The offer would allocated an electric truck to Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant and Lordstown would be reopened as a battery assembly plant. The UAW's previous contract with Gener…

There will be one less engine option for the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain come the 2020 model year. The Car Connection first reported the news on the Equinox yesterday morning, while Autoblog followed with the Terrain news later in the day. Both stories reported the same reason for cancellation, they didn't sell. "We did discontinue the diesel engine option in the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox due to low demand," said Chevrolet spokesman Kevin Kelly. The news doesn't come as a shock to us. Diesel engines have gotten a bad rap since the Volkswagen diesel emission scandal came to light, causing sales to drop. The value argument was also tough for both models. A dies…

General Motors will be bringing back the Hummer name to sell a new electric truck as part of the GMC lineup. The Wall Street Journal first broke the news yesterday with GM moving forward on plans to bring Hummer back that was first reported back in June. The report also said that the company would tout the return with a Super Bowl ad featuring NBA star LeBron James. GM declined to comment. The decision is likely due to the planned $3 billion investment for the Detroit-Hamtramck plant that we reported back in October. The investment is to gear up the plant to build an electric pickup for GMC and an electric Cadillac SUV by 2023. But in 2021, the plant will produc…

Detroit's carmakers are entering a period of crisis. For the next half-year car sales are likely to decline because of rising interest rates, bad news from Iraq and, above all, the climb in the price of gasoline. Even as that price retreats below $3, the damage has been done. People will have reason to worry about buying fuel, and that's bad for the car business. It is especially bad for Detroit's car business, dependent as it is on pickup trucks and big sport utility vehicles: Chevy Silverados and Suburbans, Ford (nyse: F - news - people ) F150s and Expeditions, Dodge Durangos and Jeep Grand Cherokees. These parts of the business are hurting the most. The Japanese and…

What options are available besides a similar brand eroding program? In my opinion, of course, the answer is Return to Greatness. Most likely, according to sources is Zero for 72. GM Design Center - Conceptual Interior Elements In speaking of the future of interior design some months ago, General Motors stated that the black-tie radios seen in virtually every GM vehicle from the Aveo to the Lucerne were a "stepping stone" between the old, often clunky interior controls of the past and the fully-integrated designs coming in the near future. Today, GM released these computer-generated '2007 proposals' of radio/HVAC designs, instrument panels, and other interior design elements. Cars like the 2008 CTS are just the beginning of GM's future design language. And after seeing these, lets hope we caught a glimpse of it. As a note, the captions below are …

I'm hearing increasing chatter regarding the 2008MY GMX386 on Global Epsilon. Backroom channels, scrawling on the walls of secret passages, notes between homeroom and first period, smoke signals, that sort of thing. Internal GM plans (as recently as September 2005) were showing a very green October 2007 launch. Hands on the wheel. Eyes on the road. It seems the eternal footman was recently spotted in the area of this bedrock program. No coat was seen in hand. Not the hint of a snicker. Yet, there he was, inexplicably peering in its darkened windows, fogging up the front passenger window, kicking tires, tracing his fingers along the sheetmetal. What WAS he do…

Automotive News November 26, 2008 - 6:32 pm ET DETROIT -- General Motors is studying the idea of killing the Saab, Saturn and Pontiac brands as it seeks U.S. rescue loans, Bloomberg News reported today. Bloomberg cited unnamed sources. A GM spokesman declined comment, the news service said. The automaker is preparing to submit a detailed turnaround plan to Congress on Tuesday, followed by hearings next week in its quest for a federal loan to avert a cash shortage. GM already has said it may sell Hummer. GM's board will meet Sunday and Monday, both regularly scheduled meetings, to review the plan to be presented to Congress, Bloomberg said. Only a small porti…

GM Minivan Plans Panned General Motors Corp. may be bowing out of the minivan business. Faced with a steep drop in demand for the family vehicles, GM confirmed Tuesday that it has scrapped plans to build new minivan models that would have debuted as early as 2009 under Chevrolet, Saturn and other nameplates. While GM declined to comment on future vehicle plans, company insiders told The Detroit News that the company has no immediate plans to build minivans after it closes its last minivan-producing plant. The Doraville, Ga., plant builds the slow-selling Chevrolet Uplander and Buick Terraza minivans. It recently stopped producing the Saturn Relay. The Detroit News

Fresh on the news that Ford invested $500 million into electric truck startup Rivian in order to gain access to the startup's EV platform, General Motors CE) Mary Barra confirmed that General Motors is working on an EV pickup of their own. This was during an investors earnings call when Barra said GM has "an industry-leading truck franchise as well as EV capability" and that the company "would not cede our leadership on either front". Talks between Rivian and GM were rumored to have broken down over GM's insistence that they have exclusive access to the platform. If that is the case, then there is a possibility that Ford may not be the only manufacturer other t…

More Zeta info from Go Auto: Come in Crewman BIGGER AND BETTER IN ’08 By BYRON MATHIOUDAKIS in DETROIT GENERAL Motors product czar Bob Lutz has revealed that GM is set to display a VE-based SUV in the form of a four-door utility. Speaking to Australian media at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this week, Mr Lutz hinted that it might herald the unexpected return of the Crewman dual-cab ute in Australia, not to mention a new export opportunity to the United States for Holden. “We will have a ute concept at the NY show, but that is going to be badged GMC,” he said. “That is a global design study – and a very interesting study in that it is…

Given that the Opel-Saturn thing isn't working as planned why not have Saturn take over the G6's new fleet queen role? Saturn could be GM's mostly fleet (75%?) brand to protect the Chevy and Buick resale values, image. Saturn has a weak image and the image that it has is "budget." Pontiac could be freed to offer 2 cars: the Solstice and G8. Maybe a Kappa based sport sedan later. Forget Beta, Here's Zeta! Yesterday, C&G brought you the very first spy shots of the Holden Commodore from Australia. That spy shot featured a front 3/4 view of the RWD architecture and also left a few readers in doubt that this was infact the Zeta architecture due to the massive padding and "roof rails" that were so blatantly obvious on these testers. As you can tell in the spy pic down below the RWD Holden Commodore will draw heavily from the Holden Torana concept shown just last year in Australia. The Torana wowed crowds with its athletic stance and it's aggressive styling prompting enthusiasts to beg "When will Beta be made?!" Holden has obviously styl…

Sold Out: Saturn Sky, Pontiac Solstice and Chevrolet Corvette Are All Spoken For This Year Date posted: 04-20-2006 NEW YORK — General Motors may have posted its sixth straight quarterly loss on Wednesday, but many of its low-volume sports cars, including the yet-to-be-launched 2007 Saturn Sky, are already sold out for this year, according to GM Vice-Chairman Bob Lutz. In a speech in New York, the GM executive said in reference to the Sky, "All available production for 2006 is accounted for." The Sky shares its platform with GM's other popular roadster, the Pontiac Solstice. Lutz said the Solstice has the best turn rate of any vehicle in its segment and that the car i…

Ok, I'm sure everyone remembers the thread on the NG Malibu. It was quite the hot topic... but their were lots of conflicting reports from various insiders. So, I ask anybody out there what the latest word is? Is the NG Malibu still on for Epsilon I or did GM delay it to redo it for the Epsilon II platform or cancel it all together? Will GM ever put a rush on things for their mainstream cars and not SUVs or niche vehicles? How far along are they? The new Malibu can't come soon enough IMO. Structurally, I believe the current car is of quality but design wise I've never liked it--interior or exterior. Any updates, hints, answers are welcome. Thanks in advanc…

As Cadillac's renaissance enters Phase Two, can its products really compete against the best from BMW, AMG Mercedes and Lexus? By DAN CARNEY Email Date posted: 05-11-2006 Since the launch of Cadillac's revitalized models such as the Escalade and the CTS, the company has promised to return to its one-time benchmark, "The Standard of the World." Today, that means beating competition from BMW (including the company's M performance division), Mercedes-Benz (likewise AMG) and Lexus. The thinking at GM goes like this: If the company can take on the likes of the BMW M5, Mercedes' SL65 AMG and Lexus' LX 470 SUV, then surely the company's other brands can beat their respective…

You guys should know what a backer of GM I am. I have never owned anything but. Christ, I started this site 6 years ago to defend them in the media. But they have really pissed me off now. Here's a warning to anyone looking at purchasing a G6, DO NOT BUY THE PANORAMIC SUNROOF UNLESS YOU LIKE SQUEAKS, RATTLES AND OTHER ANNOYING NOISES. GM knows there is a problem, I have found two TSBs about the sunroof. I called Pontiac Owner Care and they couldn't find any TSBs (I had to, of course, find them on my own on the internet - Thanks Flat Rate Tech) so they are useless. Once I had the TSB numbers, I called the dealer to make sure they knew what they were and scheduled…

It appears the proverbial "it" will hit the fan tomorrow morning, young and old a like at all levels of the org chart will be told to leave. Select GM 8th level and above managers will be shown the door. Black Tuesday is designed to shake things up at General Motors. I am lead to believe that app. 2,700 employees will be let go thougout the organization, including managers this time. This is not a random firing. Every employee has a number assigned to them. A lot of this will be kept quiet for fear of potential law suits as a result of GM's actions.

Our friends over at Pickuptruck.com have learned that Pontiac will debut a production-ready ST pickup at this year's New York Auto Show in late March. The Pontiac ST pickup is based on the Holden VE Ute that recently debuted in Australia, and since development of the vehicle consists mainly of grafting the Pontiac G8 front clip onto the Holden VE Ute, the business case for the vehicle is a no-brainer. What did stand between the Pontiac ST pickup and production was the U.S. exchange rate between the Australian and U.S. dollar, but apparently the difference isn't as bad as once thought and the price of the ST won't be out of reach for its target market. Pickuptruck.com also…

Talk about a mess? To give States the right to set their own standards is a problem even if there were only a few states involved but to give all states this right is a problem not only for a strucggling Detroit but also Japan. To give the auto industry a bail out then to sign a deal like this would be so counter productive. Obama may not have shown great judgment in some things in the past but even he should see the problems involved with an ailing industry and economy that will effect him. The sad part is something like this could get signed in this week and the vast majority of people will never know what it means to them or how it will effect them till it is …

Focus on "core brands": Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac Launch predominately high mileage, energy-efficient cars and crossovers Sell Saab, HUMMER Sell or kill Saturn Reduce Pontiac to a "niche" brand Trim dealerships from 6,450 to 4,700 Reopen ta…

http://www.automochatter.com/forum/showthread.php?t=738 General Motors has put a hold on future rear-wheel-drive vehicles. "We've pushed the pause button. It's no longer full speed ahead," Vice Chairman Bob Lutz revealed in an interview. Two of the most important RWD cars in the works are the Chevy Camaro sports coupe due back late in 2008 and the full-size, RWD replacement for the Chevy Impala sedan for 2009. Both are expected to be huge sellers and contribute major profits to a GM till burdened with IOUs the last few years. "It's too late to stop Camaro, but anything after that is questionable or on the bubble," said Lutz, noting that also means Camaro derivatives -…

According to an unnamed source speaking with Reuters, General Motors "is in 'intense' and 'earnest' preparations for a possible bankruptcy filing." The report states that GM could be split into two separate entities; one "new" unit consisting of the General's successful brands (read: Chevrolet and Cadillac) and an "old" unit made up of its less-profitable endeavors (Hummer, Saab, Pontiac and Saturn). If the plan is enacted, the all-new GM would assume some of the debt from the bankruptcy (primarily, unsecured debt) and that GM's bondholders would lose a substantial amount of value if the Chapter 11 filings go through. Naturally, neither source wished to be named, so thi…

General Motors is dialing back on production as it currently has too many vehicles in inventory. The Detroit News reports that General Motors at the end of November had 874,000 vehicles sitting around - a number that hasn't been seen since the 2008 financial crisis. Compared to the same time last year, the number of vehicles has increased by 182,000 units. More worrying is that compared to October, the number of unsold vehicles rose by 40,000. Despite strong sales, more consumers are going with crossovers, SUVs, and pickup trucks. GM even increased incentives on a number of models to help relieve this glut, all to no avail. According to Autodata, this is amount …

I love GM and their cars or I wouldn't be here. As well as they have treated me and my parents, I doubt I am going elsewhere. Needless to say, all of the bad press has left me in a funk, feeling a little perplexed...and analytical. So, one has to think of what may be going south at GM. I voted for QC but think it is both this and cost control. I read Consumer Reports. I look at how Toyota steals the show with an uninterrupted parade of "red dots" for the various systems in their cars over the years (Buyer's Guide, et al.). I then look at Cadillac and will see either a partial or a full black dot for some components...and in recent years, no less. …

GM said the cuts should boost cash flow by six billion by the end of 2020. “The actions we are taking today continue our transformation to be highly agile, resilient and profitable, while giving us the flexibility to invest in the future. We recognize the need to stay in front of changing market conditions and customer preferences to position our company for long-term success,” said GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra in a statement. GM vice chairman and product guru Robert Lutz recently acknowledged it was a possibility during a conversation with journalists earlier this month at theChicago auto show. Lutz noted that as part of global product strategy, GM would have fewer but more flexible platforms tha…

Obviously everyone is looking forward to what we KNOW is coming. The 08 CTS, 08 Malibu, production Enclave, etc. But I'm talking about surprises. Honestly, I'd love to see, at least in concept form, a RWD sedan for Pontiac. Nothing would tickle me more than the hope that GM will give me a BMW 3-series-sized-Pontiac-priced RWD sedan.

While the LaCrosse and the Impala will continue through 2008 MY at Oshawa GM Canada plant, the curtain will fall on both the Grand Prix and the Monte Carlo at mid-year, or December 2007. That's 10 or so more months of production on these cars. I guess that's to retool the portion of the Oshawa plant that will put out RWD cars. Some of you will be ecstatic. I just wish they had done a better job with these cars in the first place, allowing them to complete the full model year. Oh well.

G. Noble Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com April 10th, 2012 Yesterday evening, we reported on a few statements GM North American President Mark Reuss made to Australia’s GoAuto at this month’s New York Auto Show. Reuss briefly discussed with GoAuto concerns about the Zeta platform’s viability and what could be in store for the Australian Holden Commodore sedan. As it turns out though, GoAuto wasn’t the only auto-centric Aussie establishment itching to get a crack at Reuss. Australian car magazine Drive spoke to Reuss shortly after he introduced the new 2014 Chevrolet Impala large sedan at the Big Apple show. During the course of their conversation, Reuss hinted to …

DETROIT — General Motors is in preliminary talks about a possible merger with Chrysler, a deal that could drastically remake the landscape of the auto industry by reducing the Big Three of Detroit automakers to the Big Two. The talks between G.M. and Cerberus Capital Management, the private equity firm that owns Chrysler, began more than a month ago, and the negotiations are not certain to produce a deal. Two people close to the process said the chances of a merger were “50-50” as of Friday and would most likely still take weeks to work out. A merger would be a historic event, with two of the most iconic names in American industry coming together to survive in an incr…

By BYRON MATHIOUDAKIS 16 January 2008 GENERAL MOTORS has confirmed that a VE Commodore-based Monaro is a non-starter for now, as Holden is set to lead any pending development of the smaller rear-drive Torana. Speaking at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, GM ‘car czar’ Bob Lutz sounded the Monaro’s death knell loud and clear. “I think (the Monaro/Pontiac GTO) is gone for now,” Mr Lutz said. “We’ve got nothing in the product plan right now like that. We’d like to have, but you can’t do everything.” However, the ebullient senior GM executive then went on to raise hopes that the Holden-developed but Canadian-built Chevrolet Camaro – due to be la…

GM's Design Drive Hits the Road By refreshing its lineup with new interiors, the No. 1 carmaker aims to win over consumers with quality and fend off its rival for the top spot, Toyota by Matt Vella Link to Original Article @ BusinessWeek The 2008 STS' revised, SLS-inspired interior? Kate Zak, General Motors' director of global component strategy, stands under moody spotlights in front of three disembodied steering wheels, talking about the importance of a proper "handshake." The interactions in question—the tactile experience of hands on a gear shift, a windshield wiper stalk, or a steering wheel—are minute, and, it turns out, inextricably linked to drivers' impres…

Some info I have received seems to indicate this, at least in the Lambdas. Expect the Chevy Lambda to launch without a black tie radio, and expect all '09 MY Lambdas to not have black-ties. I would still expect the '09 Malibu to have it most likely, but the phase out is certainly starting. So, for new '09 MY and up vehicles, expect none to have black tie radios. ---------------- Click here to see what the future holds for GM's post-blacktie era radios. On my way out of Lexington this morning, I spotted a billboard that said: "We'll see your 10... and raise you 44. 54 plants in the U.S." And it had all the brands underneath and the big blue GM badge on the right-hand side. Thats probably one of the best ads I've seen from GM in a while. I wasn't even aware that they were doing this. I think its a great jab back at Toyota.

9.24.07, 11:18am UAW Strikes GM Link to Original Article @ DetNews The United Auto Workers launched a national strike today against General Motors Corp. after 10 days of marathon bargaining failed to produce a new labor pact for the automaker's 73,000 hourly U.S. workers. The stunning move came after the union told its members on Sunday they were to walk off the job unless they heard otherwise by 11 a.m. That word never came, and now GM is facing its first strike since the UAW struck the automaker's operation in Flint in 1998. "Unless you hear otherwise from your International Union and Local Union leadership, you should consider yourself on strike at 11:00 a.m." Loca…

December 07, 2006 Whither the Minivan? By Bob Lutz GM Vice Chairman Lots of minivan talk going on… let me just make one thing clear: Nobody said GM is getting out of the minivan business forever. We simply pulled a minivan option out of the running for one of our archtectures. We reserve the right to initiate whatever future product programs we feel the market desires, up to and including new generations of minivans if we deem them necessary and desirable. That’s really the key to everything, of course: the market. And we think the case for another new entry at this point in a market is trending away from minivans just doesn't make a lot of sense. Look, the mini…

General Motors Corp is delaying the redesign of SUV's and full size trucks as part of a wholesale review of its product and brand portfolio geared toward building lighter , fuel-efficient vehicles. General Motors is looking at the whole product profolio,'' spokesman Tom Wilkinson said late Wensday. In the meantime, he said the automaker will extend the life cycle of its current linup of pickups and SUV's. Those vehicles know as the GMT900 lineup. The next generation of trucks and SUV's weren't slated to hit the market until at least 2012,. People briefed on the matter say the automaker also has discussed killing off at least one future Hummer SUV product , and poten…

GM Confirms the 2011 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Is a Go Robert Dillman, September 28th, 2009 Story Link The fifth generation Camaro is currently flying off the showroom floors and perspective buyers have a few model choices when it comes to decision time. There are the LT and LS models with respectable V6 engines or the supped-up SS variant with a crowd-pleasing 6.2-liter V8. However, there is still one Camaro we have all been waiting for, and now GM is saying (again) that we will get it. During the Frankfurt Motor Show, representatives from General Motors confirmed suspicions of the Camaro Z28 being built and sold sometime in late 2011. Not very convenient co…

PONTIAC , Mich. – GM Powertrain announced today it will deliver a 3.6-liter V-6 gasoline engine with direct injection and variable valve timing (VVT) technologies in the 2008 model year. A vehicle application will be announced later in the year. Additionally, it was forecast that by the end of 2008, GM will produce as many as 200,000 vehicles globally with direct injection technology, and by 2010, GM projects one out of every six GM vehicles in North America will be equipped with a direct injection engine. From CAR Magazine - Opel cans Calibra Mk2 In short, Lutz proposed the idea as a way to get more utilization out of the Alpha platform, but GME nixed it based on Europe's upcoming CO2 regulations. That is, a rear-drive car is naturally less efficient than a comparable front-driver, and hence produces more CO2 pollution - it's basically Europe's version of CAFE regs. Lutz also noted that the Alpha-based small Caddy would be imported to Europe regardless when it appears. The comments under the article basically seem to rag on Lutz for trying to push an "inefficient" product on Europeans - I fail to see how it's any more wasteful than the supremely overweight BMW 1-series…

GM ready for Toyota trucks Tundra will claim some of the pickup market, but Detroit automaker is confident in its products. David Shepardson / Detroit News Washington Bureau Link to Original Article @ DetNews WASHINGTON -- General Motors Corp. Vice Chairman Robert Lutz said Toyota's redesigned Tundra pickup, hitting showrooms in February, is likely to be a strong seller, but GM doesn't expect to cede much market share to the Asian automaker. Maven, General Motors' car-sharing service launched in 2016 will be ceasing operation in several cities in the U.S. The news was first broken by the Wall Street Journal on Monday and has been confirmed by a GM spokeswoman. Eight out of the seventeen markets that the service operates including Boston and Chicago will be closed down within the next few months. According to the spokeswoman, the shutdown is due to GM wanting to "concentrate on markets in which we have the strongest current demand and growth potential." Those markets in question include Detroit, Los Angeles, and Toronto. Another possible reason is the lack of awareness of Maven in the eight markets b…

here GM should be fighting Toyota, not itself. "But nagging questions remain: Will sales rise enough to justify Saturn's fatter marketing budget at a time when Pontiac and Buick must trim their own ad campaigns? And is Chevrolet, GM's strongest and biggest mass-market brand, actually a better candidate to battle the imports? Chevy dealers say they could easily fit mid-priced vehicles like the Outlook and Aura into their lineups. They also note that GM is promoting Chevrolet as its mass-market global brand."

So much for Maximum Bob From www.thetruthaboutcars.com GM’s September sales figures are out. Despite generous Labor Day incentives, zero per cent financing to anyone with a pulse and an easy year-on-year comparison (GM was in the post-Fire Sale mode last September), vehicle sales are down seven percent. Given GM’s upcoming production cutbacks, there’s only one way sales can go from here: down, taking GM’s declining market share with it. Never mind. According to GM Exec Maximum Bob Lutz, "Whatever our market share stabilizes at in the US— 22, 23, 24 percent— I don’t really care. The idea that GM… has got to get back to 30 percent is a wacky notion with all this global …

Given the results of C&G Polls, this should be interesting: Informal Survey Time By Jack Keebler GM Director--Advanced Concepts Group One of the things that GM would like to better understand is the level of enthusiasm for rear-wheel drive versus front-wheel drive, particularly for young buyers of compact and sub-compact cars. Our belief is that front-wheel drive cars can be very rewarding to drive if properly set up. We also like the interior packaging space advantages, low mass and poor-weather traction of front-drive vehicles. At Saab, there is a long and storied tradition of fast, reliable rally cars. These cars fed significant power through the front wheels …

As I said on another blog, in my area I have seen 4 Ford ads in 2 days promoting their Taurus SHO sedan. What does GM have to offer against it? The Pontiac G8 is no more... and it was RWD. (Which I prefer) The new Buicks are out of the price range. The Malibu and Impalas are a joke. All the SS's are dead.... Chrysler still has the Charger, as a sedan. So I say again, what does the General offer as a performance SEDAN? Don't say the Camaro, because in your wettest dream, that is not a sedan. In order to stay in the market, you have to compete ---- apples to apples! An old latin saying, QUO VADIS, GM ????????

GM sued over OnStar change Sharon Terlep | Link to Original Article @ The Detroit News A disgruntled Cadillac owner, whose OnStar service will go dead next year as a result of upgrades to General Motors Corp.'s peace-of-mind roadside assistance feature, filed a class-action lawsuit Wednesday against the automaker.
