PANEL TRUCKS 1 2
by XP715- 52 replies

Back in the days before people all pussied out and bought vans and box vans and trailers to transport their work equipment, REAL men and women drove panel trucks or sedan deliveries to get the job done. Please share! I would probably step over my own mother to have a 1948-1953 Chevrolet or GMC one-ton panel like this one, only mine would ideally be a work-worn original. Not really a fan of the 1954 models because of the one year only ugly grille (at least on the Chevrolet) and the one year only one-piece windshield (I like the split windshield- makes the truck look that much older). A 1955-1959 model would be awesome too, and OF COURSE a pre-1948 model would be accep…

I definitely stole this from Autoblog but I thought it was a great little topic. I know it GREATLY varies based on the vehicle itself because a 5500lb SUV/Truck will need more power than a sub 3000lb car. With that said.. For the "average" 3000-4000lb vehicle I think I would want minimum 200-250hp as a daily. Something that can achieve nothing less than a 15.5 second quarter mile. I know that involves more than just hp but as it's been stated hp isn't everything. I will always want something a little fun even though a slow 15.5 isn't anything special it is quick enough to pass on demand, have a little fun with hard launches, and not aggravate me. As the vehicle …

This is my hot button lately. I'm getting flat out pissed off that people are screwing me and my kids because of their stupid purchases. Recent Lou Dobbs comment on the trade deficit Funny how he leaves cars out of his article. Too many Americans would be offended to know that their beloved toyota isn't so American after all. General Motors and Toyota were once neck-and-neck when it came to developing high-mileage gasoline-electric hybrid cars. About a decade ago, you see, both firms had cracked the code on how to engineer a hybrid, and GM even had a running prototype. But the new technology was so costly that the automakers would have had to initially sell hybrids at a loss to build a market for them. The differing paths the two companies took symbolize why Toyota has become wildly profitable in the United States while GM has been losing its shirt in its home market. And why Toyota, riding GM's bumper, is likely to pass it this year to become the world's biggest car company. In addition to t…

Is this REALLY what everyone is so excited about? Is this REALLY 'markedly' better than the domestics?!?! LOL... What a scam!!! I mean, I know the Corolla is no star and it certainly isn't top of the class. But people buy them in DROVES only to think that they're somehow a superior offering to GM/Ford/Chrysler. I guess perception really is everything. The entire car screamed *CHEAP!!!* to me... I mean, talk about a sea of hard, mismatched plastics! Even the design and layout looked like something out of Fisher-Price. Gawdy buttons and Rubbermaid controls... A sea of gray on light gray with little or horrible texture. Fake woould that looked like it had been airbrush…

Why going green won't make you better or save you money Washington Post Like most Whole Foods shoppers, David Bain thinks he is a decent citizen of Earth. His family buys mostly organic food. They recycle. He recently fortified his green credentials by removing a leaking oil tank in his yard. But here's a head scratcher: Though the Bains live in Arlington within walking distance of Whole Foods [CSpec plug: this is where I live!], they often drive there in an SUV that gets just 19 miles per gallon. He has noticed that his SUV is not alone in the lot. Does that make Bain a hypocrite? He paused before responding: "I could see how people would come to that conclusion, but…

The topic of this post is exactly what the topic says, whats your next whip going to be? I bought an 06 malibu SS sedan in may this year and have enjoyed it thus far but Im ready to make the jump to entry luxury next time around. I just finished paying off my loan on the By so I plan on keeping it till summer-fall 08 and then I want to get a loaded 3.6 DI next generation CTS. I considered getting a CTS this past summer but decided that I didnt want to spend that much on a car that is this lat in its product cycle and has been overshadowed recently by the new imports. If you've cut back due to this economy, what have you done? Me? Went from a 3 vehicle household to a 1 vehicle household. Became a massive coupon clipper. Began regularly baking my own bread. Doesn't save me a lot of dough (har har) but it's enjoyable, relaxing, and my bread is way better than what you can buy at most stores. If I don't need it in the next 7 days, I don't buy it. Funny thing is, I don't even need to cut back. My income has actually increased over the past 12-18 months. I just enjoy the challenge and my savings is looking great because of it.

I was just wondering if anybody knows approximately what the 1999 Riviera Silver Arrows go for. I never see any up for sale and I know somebody who was wondering how much they go for generally. He actually has two of them in storage in mint condition. I think they are both under 40k miles. Anybody know how much they would be worth? The price guides tell me nothing. Thanks.

I was curious if something struck you guys about the new Subaru commercial... Its a 2009 Subaru at the junkyard and the guy visits it in his new 2010 Subaru... thinking "My Subaru saved my life"... He looks over the car... then unscrews the gear shifter to keep as a reminder. Of course, this is probably something most people don't consider, but since he has a new car, the insurance as most likely bought his old car... and at that point, the insurance company owns the whole car. Sure, you can remove personal belongings, but not car parts. Usually, you see these cars at the Pick-a-Parts with large stickers from the insurance companies pointing out that parts are not to be…

For those who are not aware, the Cummins 4BT the same engine as what's found under the hood Ram pickups, but with two cylinders lopped off. They already have the 4JJ1 4 cylinder diesel in the Holden Colorado and peopl…

I've been waiting for this. We are very close to the family across the street, including their children. Their oldest boy is going to prom. His parents recently seperated and things are tough over there and money is tight. His car doesn't work and he and his friends haven't been able to come up with enough money for a limo. I knew he was working up the balls to ask me if he could borrow my brand new Z. Well, he finally did. I feel bad for him, and I never even got to go to prom and nobody in his family really has a cool car. But, never mind insurance woes, I just can't do it, plus if his parents knew he had asked they would freak out. I plan to either let my son use my Z …

A big African American (trying to be PC instead of just saying "black") dude, two women in their 30's-40's, and a younger girl with platinum blonde hair and a big hat. Turns out the girl is Ashlee Simpson with a bodygaurd etc. The only reason I recognized Ashlee is because I had seen her on the Larry King show the night before, and noticed the really blo…

Yesterday, Black and Blue Landscaper and I made the trip out the PA turnpike for this event ahead of a terrible fatal accident which later shut down the turnpike for many hours. Once there, we met up with Ocnblu and had a great time checking out all that there was to see at this year's event. We saw the Camaro Concept convertible ,of course, and I spoke very briefly with the Fbodfather himself though there was no time to really chat since his time is more than spoken for at events like this. Have you ever owned a vehicle that you were just about to the point of actually paying someone to take it off your hands? That's the relationship I have with my truck. Yup, it's August... the "dog days" of summer. What have you seen out on the roads? This afternoon on the way home from a BBQ at my bro's house, I stopped at his local Chevy/Buick/Pontiac store. Aside from the really cool Stryker Blue '09 G8 GT they had, they also had 3 '09 Delta cars, two Cobalts and a G5... the Pontiac in Silver Green, a color I've been wanting to see for months. I feared there'd be too much blue in it, making it a sort of sickly teal color, but my fears were unfounded, imo. It's a goodlooking color, imo, and dark enough to show off the chrome exterior trim package that's available on Cobalts. For the last few weeks, I've been thinking an '09 Cob…

I am fearing our 3rd car, a Taurus wagon, has transaxle issues, as a filter/fluid change today did not remedy shifting issues it intermittently has. Trans has no adjustment capabilities; it was suggested that a cracked filter may suck air; old filter showed no signs (it's plastic, floating in a sea of liquid- how's it going to crack?)… but pan gasket was fairly weepy anyway. It's a '95, bought it cheap a year & a half ago (from a friend) with 70K on it, now has 86K. Not worth rebuilding the transaxle. Not worth it as a 'local only' car, either. Haven't yet determined a budget, but would like to get something with actual cargo space. I know that's not easy to …

The Year Is: 1972 The year is 1972. You've been running hooch for a while now and you current car is in kind of tough shape after your latest escapade. The money has been good though, so you decided it's time to upgrade your ride. A full sized car won't fit in your shed and a small/pony car doesn't have the trunk space for merchandise. Police in your neck of the wood have been getting steadily more powerful cars over the past few years so a fast engine is a must. To this end, you decide a midsized two door with a big cube engine will get you where you need to go and leave the police in the dust. They only question is, which one? 1972 Pontiac GTO 1972 Plymouth…

Well, our first big storm of the winter will be hitting tomorrow and I am still waiting for my snow tires to ship to the tire store. I had my first taste of snow and ice in the LS a few days ago and quickly learned how not to drive. I had two fishtails while turning a corner onto a downhill street but recovered easily from both, but not without making my heart race a little. I used to drive an E-350 for work and had to take it out in the snow a few times (many years ago), but it is a big difference driving a cargo van with 2500 lbs of meat loaded up in the back. This weekend I went to Menard's and bought two 70 lb sand bags in addition to the 35 lb one that came with …

Sure, I have a computer and a phone. But I also always get a calendar from my GM dealer. And what a beautiful sight in terms of classic cars on it for the month of June. Voila: Come to think of it, for once, the Buick was the best looking of the Malibu-LeMans-Cutlass-Skylark fraternal quadruplets. The front and rear were clean and interesting enough. The side profile had nothing garish about it, including when closed up with a hardtop. And the dash had tasteful square bezels with small rounded corners. It came with quite a few engines. There were definitely 350s and 455s, but I learned that the 250 c.i. 6 was also available (read the fine …

We did another fall foliage drive today, out to Breckenridge going the back way and then over to Vail and then back to Denver with a side trip up to Berthoud Pass.. great weather and scenery, and saw some interesting cars along the way..it was a nice, relaxing 250 mile drive. In a fenced-in lot by a garage in Englewood, we saw a couple of sad '59 GMs--a pale green Pontiac wagon that had hit something hard on the left front, and a black flat-top Olds 4dr..both were rusty and looked like they had been there a long time.. At a gas station outside Conifer, saw a white '56 Packard 4dr. Saw a nice red '67 Camaro SS in Fairplay...saw a tired primered gray '67 Cougar in Emp…

Kinda appropriate to call it a countdown since 24 premiered in syndication this weekend across America. In any case, all I really remember is a nice lowered Intrepid on fins, a 90s Cutlass Supreme sedan on some sort of big dubs (yes, both cars looked quite nice), and a advertising shrink wrap equipped Pacifica (from far away, I thought it was an SRX)

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drive...rticleId=115799 It looks like they went out of their way to drive it as softly as possible, to maximize fuel economy and make Toyota look good (or at least, not as bad) for once again delivering a vehicle that gets no where near it's promised gas mileage. Who drives at 60 mph on the expressway? That's below the speed limit on most interstate highways. Here in Ohio, most people whizz by at 70, and people say this is a state full of slow drivers. If they were testing - say - GM's new hybrid the Saturn Vue Green Line, I'd bet you money they would floor the acceleration at each traffic light, and push it at 80+ on the expresswa…

The BEP thread got me thinking about annoying songs. There are a lot of songs that I dislike because they suck or because they get overplayed or they just rub me the wrong way. But I really think Panda Panda Panda by Deerhoof is the most annoying song ever. It sounds like something a 5 year old would walk around singing.

This isn't some "GM Death Watch" thread. This is industry-wide. Who do you think the next brand or company will be to leave the US market? There's been serious talk about Mitsu leaving, occasional talk about VW leaving, though I haven't had that impression myself. Then of course there's the occasional clamor for axing a GM brand. Isuzu is gone (practically has been for a while, though). So, who's next to leave the US market or shut down?

After this week, I am likely going to be in the position of having to find another set of wheels. Yes, I've had plenty of vehicles in my life, but this is different. This time I had no itch for something new. There is no kid-in-a-candy store feeling in me. No yearning for something new. Now it's just a matter of practicality, necessity, that brings me to this point. Under these circumstances, I am not likely to enjoy the process. I have never been in such a situation. I don't want to make a bad choice. Before this, I was thinking out a couple of years to a Gamma crossover, Cruze coupe, new-style Impreza Outback Sport, new-style GM compact pickup... vehicles that …

Hey guys! I kind of accidently came across this while just looking for something to fit our needs. I certainly don't need something quite this large, but it does seem pretty awesome. So anyway, I came across a 2017 Lincoln Navigator Reserve priced at 18,7XX. It does have a lot of miles, but all full-size SUVs(regardless of brand) seem to last forever as long as you don't neglect them. It has 128k on the odometer already. It kind of worries me, but it isn't 1990 and vehicles last a heck of a lot longer than they used to. This price is what really made me look into it further because it's really good. Most anything else full size has either more miles or costs con…

My pics of what I no longer see on the road: 1. Buick Riviera. Yeah, I know I'm the small car fan here at C&G but for some reason I've always lusted after the Riv. Almost bought a silver 65 with dual 4v carbs when I bought the 66 Mustang fastback. Used to be several running around my old home town. I also miss the later 60's design and the sweet 70's boat tail design. Actually, I seldom see the sleek 90's version on the road either. 2. Olds Cutlass Vista Cruiser. When we were talking about the what year thing I thought about how many of these there were running around when I was a kid. Still lust after them, and if I could have GM build me anything from …

Free Parking Comes at a Price NY Times IN our society, cars receive considerable attention and study — whether the subject is buying and selling them, the traffic congestion they cause or the dangerous things we do in them, like texting and talking on cellphones while driving. But we haven’t devoted nearly enough thought to how cars are usually deployed — namely, by sitting in parking spaces. Is this a serious economic issue? In fact, it’s a classic tale of how subsidies, use restrictions, and price controls can steer an economy in wrong directions. Car owners may not want to hear this, but we have way too much free parking. Higher charges for parking spaces would l…

What extinct or endangered body style do you want to see come back? February 13th, 2011 Drew Dowdell - CheersandGears.com Over the years body styles have come and gone. Oh sure, the basic trio of sedan, coupe, wagon are still around, but even those three had subtypes. The example shown above is from my personal favorite body style. The Cadillac Eldorado was a coupe, yes, but it was of a subtype called a Personal Luxury Coupe. This sub-type of coupe was marketed as it's own category in years past. Indeed in 1980, there were no less than 14 Personal Luxury Coupe models offered by just the Detroit three. By 1990, that number was down to about 8 and by 2000 only the Cad…

Go ahead pick you favorite one or two cars. Try not to select more than three! Keep in mind my needs, has to have a nice size trunk, good performance (think like my SLE, good), can be driven for fun on the weekends and also driven to school/work by my son or I during the week, should be a good car with few expensive repairs, oh and it must be GM. If it isn't on the list it isn't being considered! 2008-2009 Cobalt XFE Coupe... I really like the fuel economy and the fact that it has a nice trunk and is a 5spd is a bonus. If I got one I would wish I had a G5 anyways. 2008-2009 G5 XFE... Same as the Cobalt but way better looking. 2001-2002 Grand Prix GT Coupe... A…

Worst Car Showcase Presents: The Chevrolet Vega The Vega could quite possibly be one of GM's worst efforts in the sub-compact car market in the history of the company. When GM and Chevrolet introduced the Vega models, which were a coupe (Hatchback), a sedan (Notchback), a two-door station wagon (Kammback), and a sedan delivery (Panel Express), all the way back in 1971, it was their poorly concerted answer to Volkswagen ass-engined Beetle, Ford's cheeky pint-sized rolling fireball, known as the Pinto, as well as the torrent of bland and dreary econo-boxes being shipped over from Japan by the bushel full. Yes, when it came to the era of disco and bell-bottom jeans, the…

I got the idea from today's Autoblog post on the new Fiat Doblo Work Up. With all the love for a small, compact pickup here and elsewhere on the interwebs, would a vehicle like this -- a small commercial van-based truck -- work in the US? Doblo Work Up bed size vs. Ranger 2dr bed size L: 90.6 in vs. 72.7 in W: 71.7 in vs. 54.2 in (40.5 in between wheels) H: 13.8 in vs. 16.5 in Doblo payload: 2204 lbs Ranger payload: 1580 lbs Doblo 1.6 Multijet = 105 hp @ 4,000 rpm, 214 lb-ft @ 1,500 rpm Ranger 2.3L I4 = 143 hp @ 5,250 rpm, 154 lb-ft @ 3,750 Personally…

Ok, I know this is a GM fansite and all, but there's one thing we really need to stop. Defending GM cars JUST because they are GM's cars. I've been watching this for a while now, and use to do it myself. But after being inside of my 2001 Crapalier, I've come to a new understanding of what being a GM fan is, and now I'm going to spell it out. You CANNOT pretend that GM cars made before the 2005 MY are as good or better than their foreign counterparts. The 2004 Malibu is a POS compared to the 2004 Accord, a vehicle that was in production for, what? 2 years? Yeah. You CANNOT continue to pretend that GMs marketshare hemorrhage for the past 30 years…

I got a Southwest "wanna get away" moment to kick things off... I'm over by the bank, in the car, analyzing this 79 Cutlass Supreme and a 70s El Camino parked head-to-head. Cutty was quite clean, but for the slightly smashed-in-from-the-bottom grille, and the ElCo was pretty oxidized, but looked straight. OK, here's the rundown. El Co backs out to leave, while right next to the Cutty, this idiot comes in some bulls--t Yukon XL Denali at a painfully obvious bad angle (never mind that the poor older lady is putting her groceries in the trunk, and that he had five spaces to choose from, but chooses to pull right next to her). You guys are likely not going to have info on this... but I have to ask anyway... Many of my toys from the '70s (Stretch Monster, Ding-a-Lings, Girder and Panel) have gotten serious websearches to understand why they came about. Sometime in the '70s, I got my only actual pedal car. My neighbor likely grabbed it from the trash around 1974/75 since it was already fairly broken when I got it and my father threw it into the trash around 1980 because even though I had long outgrew it, I preferred wheeling around in it as opposed to riding a proper bike. Yeah, I was a strange, car-crazy child. I've been trying to find info on the pedal cars of the '70s, but everything come…

TOP (green) modified by pushing front wheel forward BOTTOM (silver/blue) production 2007 DTS The wheelbase is the only thing I modified, the overall length and all else is unchanged. This is a perfect example of what I'm talking about when I say that in profile FWD cars (with transverse mounted motors esp.) are awkward, ungainly & in many cases look just plain dumb to my eyes. The front wheels look like they've been pushed back 4" to 10" and the wheelbase looks way too short as a direct result. I think the green (modified) car looks a million times better. THOUGHTS!?

I probably have a dash fetish. I analyze them to death. Love all the little details...they tended to be more interesting on cars from the past. More free spirited, not so worried about perfect ergonomics. Dashes from most car manufacturers today have a sameness to them, although there are a few out of the norm. 1930 Cadillac Madame X Coupe: This dash has some interesting shapes/details for the time. 1932 Cadillac Sport Phaeton: Beautiful details. Notice the abundance of exposed screws. I tend to like them as they suggested machine-like qualities. Today our sensiblities have changed, we are aghast at the slightest hint of assembly.

Coming home from the beach today, it was raining a bit. I had the intermittent wipers on. As it started to rain harder, I turned them up faster, notch by notch, until I got to the fastest intermittent speed. At the same time, I was getting out of town and speeding up on the highway. Then I thought I had a problem, until I figgered it out. As I reached 55 mph, my wipers started working continuously. If I let the car go slower than 55, they reverted back to intermittent. Cool! And an intuitively useful feature. Have you ever discovered, by accident, any cool features on your car?

So I've taken a few months off to just relax after graduating in December, but it's time to start looking for a real job (I work at a campus bar right now). With that, comes the exciting prospect of shopping for a car. The '95 Olds LSS has served me well, but it's in bad shape after spending the last 8 years on campus (sister and then me) and it's not something I'd want to trust to get me to and from work all of the time. The average salary for my major from the school I went to last year was $61k, but I'm guessing most of that was in Chicago. The two jobs I am going to send my resume to are both in my hometown and $61k in Chicago translates to $50k here, so I think tha…

I borrowed a friend's Alero 4-cylinder today. Pleasent little car, decent power, decent interior. With gas hovering at $3.00 a gallon and only going higher, I began thinking about alternatives to replacing my current CTS with an '08 CTS and instead finding a 4-cylinder premium car. I'm considering my options: Audi A4 2.0t Acura TSX 5-speed Saab 9-3 2.0t Volvo S40 I'm not entirely thrilled about any of those choices... the 9-3 would be ok, but doesn't light my fire. I know the Aura is coming, but my concern is that they'll package the Green-Line in a way that you can't get a loaded one. What I want is a completely loaded premium car with great fuel mileage…
